Ah, the prestige picture. Put together for their pedigree and the chance at Oscar glory. Amazing ensemble casts of some of the greatest actors of today from a highly respected source material with a talented behind the scenes talent.

And then it’s gone. What happened? There was so much going for it. Met with constant release delays and, what I’m assuming was a laborious process of post-production, we have the 2006 film All the King’s Men, based on the Robert Penn Warren novel, written and directed by Steven Zaillian (A Civil Action, Searching for Bobby Fischer). An overbearing, dragged out, and ultimately dull would be Oscar hopeful that never gets itself off the ground and ultimately winds up a huge disappointment.

An amazing all star cast shows up for work in this film that follows fictional Louisiana governor Willie Stark (played to the hilt by Sean Penn) as he navigates political corruption and potential impeachment. This is all seen through the eyes of idealistic, intrepid reporter Jack Burden (Jude Law, saddled with an accent he just doesn’t have a handle on) who ends up working for Stark and must find dirt on an influential judge (Anthony Hopkins). The problem being that this man also happened to be a father figure to dear old Jack in his youth. In fact, this is something that constantly keeps getting pushed on Jack as aspects of his past continue to collide with Stark’s gubernatorial reach. Mark Ruffalo and Kate Winslet play childhood friends of Jack Burden’s who get drawn into Stark’s realm of personal corruption.

As you can see, an amazing cast is put together in this movie and, in most other cases this would be reason enough to make this a movie to look out for. Unfortunately, absolutely no one brings their A game to their roles, and even if they did, they are all hampered by accents ranging from passable to outright horrendous. Jude Law’s fluctuating rich, upper crust southern drawl is absolutely painful to the ears, making the decision to have him be the narrator even more egregious. Sean Penn turns in a hammy piece of overacting. Penn is a usually brilliant actor but here he is embarrassingly inept and broad in his characterization of Willie Stark. A constantly moving, hammy performance that recalls the Sean Penn of I Am Sam rather than the Penn of Milk. It almost became a struggle to not turn the movie off it becomes such a bear to watch.

James Gandolfini plays one of Stark’s advisors and its just another actor struggling with no life preserver with his heavy Jersey Tony Soprano voice bursting through a southern accent. Mark Ruffalo isn’t given much to do except look disturbed at points and sit next to Jude Law during some inexplicably placed flashbacks. Jackie Earle Haley shows up from time to time with a handgun in hand as Stark’s bodyguard and you’re constantly left wondering what such a talented actor is doing just being left to look threating in the background and randomly thrown together cutaways. Anthony Hopkins acquits himself nicely but he merely shows up and doesn’t embarrass himself like most others. Actually, I’d put Kate Winslet and Patricia Clarkson in that same category in the movie. Talented actors and trying their best, but they’ve done infinitely better work with infinitely better material.

The themes of the movie about the corruption of idealism and the story of a charismatic southern leader getting elected on the backs of the poor, lower class, uneducated voters is as timely as ever but the film never strives to make anything of it. Zaillian slaps together some heavy handed religious imagery all over the movie with crosses showing up at any moment where he feels it’s appropriate trying to draw parallels to the current day movement of the religious right but none of it ever feels tied together.

And that’s one aspect that represents the great problem of the movie. It’s just overbearing. Everything from the performances that just don’t work and are far too broad to the attempted symbolism and imagery and slow, panning camera movements to even the score itself. Every aspect of the movie screams out that it’s a movie. Rather than being lost in the story, the viewer becomes very aware that Sean Penn is just acting like there’s no tomorrow up there. There’s no involvement whatsoever. During scenes of Stark’s raving speeches against the upper class citizens of the city, the music builds and builds until it reaches an overbearing crescendo over a scene which has no need for it. The score, like most every other aspect of the movie, dulls the senses and pulls the viewer completely out of any reality that the film may have been trying to build. Where subtlety would be best, Zaillian comes at it with a sledgehammer.

A wasted cast, overbearing direction, a dull, loaded script with a lot to say but no idea how to get it across to the audience, no wonder it never resurfaced in Oscar talks once it was actually seen. There was a great deal of potential in front of and behind the camera but none of it was utilized.

The movie screams through its pores to honor it with something and it never strives to show how it deserves it. Penn aches with an immense amount of character and feeling as Willie Stark but there’s never a real human character there. It’s just an enormous amount of actor tics and traits to form a performance more than anything else, and an aggravating one at that.

The great failing lies at Zaillian’s feat at the end of it all. He was given an immense source novel and a cast to die for and turned in a turgid, lifeless affair that feels as if it so desperately needs to be liked. Actually, not too far from most actual politicians come to think of it.

On a side note, this novel has been adapted into a film before in 1949. It won three Oscars for Best Supporting Actress, Best Actor, and Best Picture.

Drama.

Not my sort of thing, and far from the best gangster movie, but well done. The basic concept of the movie seems like it’s been done a million times. Great performances, in spite of the guy from New Jersey who is clearly Australian.

All the King’s Men (2006)

Governor Willie Stark finds himself facing impeachment proceedings but his methods of ensuring a favourable outcome by identifying opponents weaknesses give those in his circle choices which they should find harder than they do.

4/10

Unconvincing political drama scuppered by an uninteresting and unlikable not-quite-charismatic Lousiana Governor Willie Stark played with much acting by Sean Penn. Scenes between Jude Law and Anthony Hopkins and Jude Law and Kate Winslet are much more interesting and it’s probably these that were enough to make me stick with the movie. The moral choices their characters make are worthy of thought but adapter / director Steven Zaillian and composer James Horner are so busy making sure the film is important and meaningful that they buried anything important and meaningful under layers of chest-puffing and self-aggrandisement. The thick accents are occasionally impenetrable for non-Louisiana residents but that’s not the film’s fault.

This movie contains mild swear words, adult dialogue and extreme gun violence, gory and unpleasant scenes and sensuality.

Peter Webber (Hannibal Rising) will direct The Spider’s House, a romantic drama following two ex-lovers who meet again in 1950s Morocco, on a backdrop of growing tensions between freedom fighters and French colonials. It is adapted by newcomer Laurie Cooke from a novel by Paul Bowles (The Sheltering Sky).

The 1987 classic supernatural thriller Angel Heart is getting the remake treatment. The original film was written and directed by Alan Parker (The Life Of David Gale), based on a book by William Hjortsberg (Legend), and stars Mickey Rourke (Stormbreaker), Robert De Niro (Righteous Kill) and Charlotte Rampling (The Duchess) among others. Watch the original’s trailer below.

Jack Black (Tropic Thunder) will star in an untitled spoof of the Bourne films, from the screenwriters of Kung Fu Panda, Jonathan Aibel and Glenn Berger. Black will play an amnesiac who’s convinced he must be a spy…FYI, this movie was already made last year into the very unfunny Code Name: The Cleaner.

Philip Seymour Hoffman (Charlie Wilson’s War) will voice Max in Mary And Max, a claymation film about two penpals, an 8 year old Australian girl and a 44 year old Jewish New Yorker dude. In the meantime you’ll be able to catch him in the incredible looking films Synecdoche, New York (see the trailer) and Doubt (see the trailer).

British actor Michael Sheen (Blood Diamond) just signed onto two films: the new Alice In Wonderland movie from director Tim Burton (Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber Of Fleet Street) and the terrorism-themed thriller Unthinkable from Australian director Gregor Jordan (Ned Kelly), also starring Samuel L. Jackson (Lakeview Terrace) and Carrie-Anne Moss (Disturbia).

Director Martin Scorsese (The Departed) is set to reunite with regular star Robert De Niro more than 13 years after the mob flick Casino. The new film will be based on the non-fiction book I Heard You Paint Houses from author Charles Brandt, as adapted by multi-award winning screenwriter Steven Zaillian (American Gangster).

Timothy J. Sexton will be writing the screenplay for Timecrimes, the filmic adaptation of Spanish director Nacho Vigalondo’s Los Cronocrímenes. This UA production will be produced by Steven Zaillian and Agnes Metre, who picked up the rights this past January when the Spanish film screened at Sundance, accordin to the Hollywood Reporter. Sarah Mitchell from Ion Cinema (includes trailer for Los Cronocrímenes) says, “The thriller follows a man who unleashes a disastrous chain of events after traveling back in time an hour and a half in hopes of preventing a serious crime. The man commits a well-known faux pas among time-travel aficionados and runs into himself, thus setting into motion a series of irreversible damages.”

Sexton, who co-wrote Children of Men, recently completed a screenplay for a remake of Logan’s Run (1976), scheduled for 2010 release. In this dystopian feature, a death sentence has been mandated for all youth turning 21.

What do you get when you combine mediocre leading men, a mediocre screenwriter, and a mediocre major

What do you get when you combine mediocre leading men, a mediocre screenwriter, and a mediocre major director? A whole heap of mediocre.

Before you get too pissed off, understand that my ambivalence concerning everyone involved in this film is not unequivocal. I’ll break it down as follows:

Russell Crowe was really good in The Insider, pretty good in L.A. Confidential, sucked as much as anyone can suck in 3:10 to Yuma…and was eh in everything else.

Denzel Washington was probably really good in Philadelphia and might have been pretty good in Malcolm X, but I’ve never actually watched either of them. In everything I’ve ever seen he’s been eh.

Ridley Scott directed Alien, an amazing film, in 1979, Thelma and Louise, a good film, in 1991, and Black Hawk Down, a solid film, ten years later. Everything else in the last three decades has been pretty eh.

Steven Zaillian adapted Schindler’s List, which counts for something, and I liked Gangs of New York, but that was in spite of the writing rather than because of it. He’s eh.

American Gangster isn’t bad. It’s just eh.

It actually moves pretty quickly for a film that’s over two-and-a-half hours long, with a narrative arc that’s mostly sensical in a way that confirms expectations at every turn. Viewers are led through a rather cliched gangster plot with a firm and comforting hand, the kind that’s more likely to offer a gentle pat than an invigorating slap. Scott and Zaillian seem more interested in making the audience comfortable than stimulating even the slightest emotion. Sure, there are moments of extreme violence, but they’re executed with such little panache that they fail to linger in the memory or even quicken the pulse. Compare scenes in this film with similar moments of violence in No Country for Old Men or There Will Be Blood and you’ll see why this film was “slighted” (note quotes) come awards time. It’s just eh.

Washington and Crowe walk up to the line of competence, dangle a toe on the far side, and then take a seat, content with performances that are embarassing only in their visible lack of effort. The supporting cast is notable in size and diversity if not quality; film buffs may enjoy picking long-time character actors out of the crowd. And if anyone had any doubt that Ruby Dee’s Oscar nomination was for being old, watch the film: she’s only in it for about ten minutes and doesn’t do anything particularly interesting.

Films like this ultimately annoy me because they’re a waste of time, money, and resources. Why should A-list (I’m using that term to refer to how much they’re paid rather than their respective abilities) talent devote their energy to a film that treads such a worn path? For the actors, I’m guessing it’s a chance to collect a paycheck, keep their faces in the public eye, and continue to develop a John Wayne-esque body of work– one in which they play a minor variant on an existing persona rather than inhabiting a character. Sure, it’s lazy acting, but it goes a long way in garnering audience appeal and establishing a solid legacy. For Zaillian, the film’s just another in a career-long line of bland but respectable pieces of cinema; I really couldn’t care less.

But for Scott, a director who at least once possessed a creative drive, I’m wondering if the film is really a flag of surrender. It’s a hell of a lot easier to convince a studio to make a film like American Gangster than it is to force an innovative horror film or quasi-feminist revenge flick down executive’s throats. I know I’ll never make it in Hollywood, but I still believe it’s worth the fight.

Rating: 3 out of 5 screens

8. Cinderella Man (2005), de Ron Howard.

Grandes actuaciones.

10. Un domingo cualquiera (Any given sunday, 1999), de Oliver Stone.

SEARCHING FOR BOBBY FISCHER – STEVEN ZAILLIAN- 1993 Vandaag is de wereldberoemde schaakgrootme

SEARCHING FOR BOBBY FISCHER – STEVEN ZAILLIAN- 1993

Early in Ridley Scott’s American Gangster, Russell Crowe’s character, a New Jersey detective, discovers almost $1 million in unmarked bills in the trunk of a car. Does he take the money? If he does, he’s entering into the murky world of corruption that the bulk of his colleagues seem to inhabit; if he doesn’t, he’s putting himself in immediate danger because, as his partner observes, “Cops kill cops they can’t trust.” He decides to turn in the money anyway.

On one level, American Gangster is the true story of the rise and fall of Frank Lucas (Denzel Washington), a self-made man who became Harlem’s heroin kingpin in the 1970s by directly importing his product from Thailand and cutting out the middleman. Lucas was a true entrepreneur, applying a ruthlessly capitalistic philosophy to the drug trade — he undercut the competition (who just happened to be the Mafia) by offering twice the quality at half the price.

On a deeper level, however, the film is about police corruption. Scott and screenwriter Steven Zaillian seem to contend that dirty cops are even worse than the criminals they bully. Washington’s Lucas adheres to his own (albeit twisted) code of ethics — he will snap quickly and mercilessly at anyone who betrays his trust, but he only does what he thinks he needs to do in pursuit of his business goals. The sleazy Detective Trupo (Josh Brolin), on the other hand, has no honour, instead abusing his power in order to extort as much money as possible from the men he should be arresting. Trupo, it seems, is the real bad guy here.

Richie Roberts (Crowe), meanwhile, is caught in the middle. He’s a man who straddles both sides of the fence: staunchly moral when it comes to the temptation of corruption, he nonetheless associates with “wiseguys” after-hours because these were the friends he grew up with. Charged with tracking down the “big fish” in the drug trade, Roberts finds opposition mostly from the police who live off the kickbacks and don’t wish to see their sources of income disappear. And after all, Roberts was the man who (so legend had it) turned in $1 million in cash.

Scott’s ability to evoke the time and place in which the film is set is never out of balance, feeling both contemporary yet still of its time. The soundtrack is excellent, but the costuming in particular is a key part of the narrative: Lucas eschews the gaudy ’70s pimp-style outfit (a “clown suit” he remarks at one point), instead preferring a suit and tie in order to remain low-key. A distinction is clearly drawn between Lucas — a businessman who dresses appropriately — and the hedonists who simply wish to live (and die) to excess.

The performances are excellent. Washington is both charismatic and menacing as Lucas, while Crowe’s turn is more understated than usual but still passionate under the surface — his most surprising scenes are where Roberts fumbles in courtrooms due to his fear of public speaking.

What separates American Gangster from many other films in the genre are the parallels drawn by Lucas (and by extension, Scott and Zaillian) between American-style capitalism and his methods of drug distribution. At one point, he even discusses branding and trademark infringement, citing Pepsi and General Motors as examples. This was a forward-thinking businessman in an unconventional business.

This is perhaps not Scott’s best film, nor the best in the history of gangster/crime films, but it’s certainly one of the better examples of both.

UK Release: 27th October 2006

In his role as wily politician Willie Stark, Sean Penn does a lot of shouting and grand gesticulating, but fails to bring this remake of the 1949 Oscar-winning drama to life. Writer/director Steven Zaillian seems overawed by the task of adapting Robert Penn Warren’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, which shows Stark (a character inspired by real-life Louisiana governor Huey P Long) gradually being seduced away from his populist ideals by the lure of power.

Jude Law plays Stark’s right-hand man Jack Burden, who tries to avert scandal while battling his own inner demons. Unfortunately, Zaillian’s script becomes so tangled up in numerous subplots — Burden’s relationship with an old flame (Kate Winslet), to name but one — that supposedly significant revelations have little impact, and so Zaillian is forced to rely on endless talky scenes and a ponderous voiceover to explain the story. And the performances of the undeniably A-list cast, which also includes Anthony Hopkins, seem affected thanks to the ostentatious direction.

Starring: John Travolta, Robert Duvall, John Lithgow, William H Macy, Kathleen Quinlan, James Gandolfini, Stephen Fry
Director: Steven Zaillian
Genre: Thriller
Cert: 15
Released: 1998

Cynical personal injury lawyer, Jan Schlichtmann (Travolta), noramlly backs away from any case where he is not sure he can win. When a distressed mother (Quinlan) asks him to take on a case involving the death of eight children from lukemia in a small town, Schlichtmann says he is not interested. But when he realises that there is a case to be made for local industries polluting the water and causing the children’s death, he decides to take on two large organisations and their respective highly-educated lawyers (Duvall and Norris). Struggling for resources and support, Schlichtmann goes against his usual principals and embraces new ones, but these might cost him his career and reputation.

Apparently based on a true story, “A Civil Action” is at times a taut and insightful look into high-powered legal politics and principals. Travolta plays a typical cut-throat ’show me the money’ lawyer whose inferiority complex regarding his modest education, comes to the fore during the biggest case of his career. Eager to prove he can cut it in the big-time, he pursues the big corporations through the courts rather than accept a settlement, as he normally does.

He performs as well as you would expect but is often outshone by Quinlan’s realistic portrayal of a grieving mother and James Gandolfini’s righteous employee who wants to see justice done. As expected, Duvall’s portrayal of the self-confident and ultra-clever opposition lawyer is a treat and the likes of William H Macy and John Lithgow do not disappoint either.

It doesn’t strike me as a movie that matches it’s billing (the greatest legal thriller of all time), but it is fulfilling enough to be worth watching.
