Munk debunked
2 December 2009

“Be it resolved climate change is mankind’s defining crisis, and demands a commensurate international response.”

Let me begin by saying that I wanted to enjoy this debate – I really did. But, I have seen more thoughtful, critical analysis from an episode of Family Guy than hurricane of shit that happened yesterday.

It’s taken me a day to process how to even resolve the resolution. I struggled to declare who won the Munk Debates last night. Actually, I think the only way is to compare the debate to Family Guy.

The Resolution:

Like storyline of an episode of Family Guy, this resolution is absolutely ridiculous: be it resolved that climate change is mankind’s defining crisis. Seriously, the onus of the opposition is simply to state that climate change is not the most important issue, and that there could be other issues equally if not more important than climate change. So, right from the beginning, you know that this debate will be a complete farce.

The Characters:

Nigel Lawson aka Mayor Adam West
If anyone is going to make an argument based on unfounded data, it would be Mayor Adam West. Here you have a mayor who is supposed to be responsible and knowledgeable, yet is completely delusional. Sound familiar? Lawson made some interesting, and to some extent reasonable, arguments on the feasibility of imposing carbon tax and its implications on developing nations. However, he discredited himself and his entire argument by denying the scientific data illustrating incremental heating changes throughout this century. His ignorance and unwillingness to even rationalise side proposition was astonishing.

I was half expecting him to talk to his hand when he sat back down…

Elizabeth May aka Meg Griffin
Sometimes Meg Griffin says some things that are sensible. It’s true. The sad truth is that nobody remembers anything substantial she says because she’s way too sensitive and hormonally psychotic. The same applies for Elizabeth May. Her stunning unprofessional conduct during the debate shadows the content of her speech. Moreover, she may have been right, but not really within the context of the debate. As side proposition, her job was to define the resolution, and clearly convey why, above all other issues, climate change should take precedence. She failed to do this, and looked like a blundering idiot in the process.

Bjørn Lomborg aka Stewie Griffin
I’m not sure whom to credit the fault to, but Lawson and Lomborg had completely different stances on side opposition. Lomborg really focused on the technicalities of the resolution. Although he stated that as a society, we shouldn’t privilege one issue over another, throughout the debate he snidely forced side proposition to choose between foreign aid and climate change. And yet, he was one of the most persuasive speakers of the night. Like Stewie, Lomborg was just cunning in his debate style and execution. Clad in jeans and a sweater, he was calm, cool, and, compared to May, collected. He did have some legitimate points on where our priorities should lie, but he did have a lot of questionable statistics backing up his statements.

George Monbiot aka Brian Griffin
While I wasn’t a fan of his actual speech, Monbiot definitely shined during the question period. He was the sole voice of reason and rationality – aside from that slippery slope, Africa will resort to AK 47s comment. He really had the most insightful comments, identifying the main problem (global warming) and in our current international context, the symptoms being all the issues Bjørn previously mentioned, like poverty, famine, and even AIDS. And on that note, extra points to Monbiot for saving May on the “climate change causes AIDS” argument. At least on side proposition we see some consistency in argument.

Final Comments

So on the whole, I’m giving this debate to side propositions, not because they had the best arguments, but because though the opposition had little burden of proof, they still failed to consistently argue why climate change is not our top priority.

But let us pray that we never again see a debate so loaded with fact spewing. This debate was about as deep as an episode of The Hills.

The full length trailer for Family Guy’s Empire Strikes Back parody Family Guy: Something, Something

The full length trailer for Family Guy’s Empire Strikes Back parody Family Guy: Something, Something, Something, Dark Side premieres today on iTunes and YouTube. Interestingly, the trailer is shot for shot remake of the original trailer from the 1980 classic The Empire Strikes Back. Here’s hoping it has a few more jokes than the first offering- movie references will only get you so far.

Here is the official synopsis:

The saga continues as Luke (Chris), Leia (Lois), Han Solo (Peter) and Chewbacca (Brian) have evaded the dreaded Imperial Starfleet led by the cunning, conniving and curiously short evil lord Darth Vader (Stewie), setting up a new secret base on the remote ice world of Hoth. With the rebellion in trouble, young Skywalker must take the advice of his late, and rather lascivious, mentor Obi-Wan Kenobi (Herbert) and learn the ways of the “farce” under Jedi Master Yoda (Carl) to save the galaxy once and for all.

And here’s the trailer:

The movie will be released on the 22nd of December on iTunes, DVD and Blu-Ray on the 22nd December 2009.

This is my first time, so it’s not the best. I followed a video I found on YouTube, but as I drew the picture, I looked at a picture I found on another web site.

What one really has to do with the other, I don’t know, but keeping that in mind, it sort of paves the way for these future misappropriations of cute widdle fuzzy teddy bears by popular culture, whether it’s…

By Annie

I’ve never gotten into making amigurumi, but I have to admit that I love looking at the pictures. This week I ran across this blog that has some of the cutest and most creative amigurumi I’ve ever seen. It’s appropriately titled “Cute Amigurumi!”

Here are some of my favorite pictures from the site:

Brian Griffin sipping a martini

A strawberry milkshake

Hobbes

It’s all so creative and well-done. I wish I could come up with great ideas like these (and have the patience to execute them). If you have a couple extra minutes to surf the internet, I highly recommend a trip to this site.

No, we’re not that raunchy here at LGO. We wouldn’t even begin to think about trying to obtain “Two Girls and One Cup”. If you want that crap, you can Google Search your way to “Hungry Bitches”. No, we aren’t giving you a link to that.

However, we did find several of the reaction videos quite hilarious over the past year or so. But the best one by far, in our opinion, is Family Guy’s own Stewie Griffin:

Of course, this is hardly a family themed episode (or show). But then again, we’re talking about a show that has a baby talk british, make sexual and gay references, and try to kill his mother. Oh, and look at Hustler:

Again, back to the homosexuality. But that’s alright, because Family Guy is okay with us!

(Season 8, Episode 3)

Dan Aykroyd and Chevy Chase showed up as real-life spies, so decreed because Reagan loved Spies Like Us. It was so awesome that my favorite character, Mayor West, was a KGB-Sleeper Agent. But I was worried that this was Adam West’s way of quitting the show. It wouldn’t be the same show without him.

The Russian adventure with Stewie and Brian joining the actors was as silly as expected. The best bit was the fuselage of the nuclear missile West launched crashing into Cleveland’s new house. From there we got not only the classic “No! No! No!” gag of Cleveland sliding out of the house in his bathtub, but Tim the Bear walking into the scene: “I don’t get it.”

I had a feeling this episode would turn out to be a lot of fun, and I was right. The jaunt to alternate realities for Brian and Stewie lead to a lot of fun. Unfortunately, it was one of the least exciting of those worlds that the writers decided to have them settle on for awhile.

Still, seeing Brian and Stewie in a Disney animated reality, the world of Robot Chicken and even a world where they’re both real-life instead of animated. I could have watched thirty minutes of the two of them exploring these wacky realities.

In typical Family Guy fashion, it wasn’t all fun and games. There were some serious and controversial statements made in some of those segments. But that doesn’t mean there wasn’t time for the inane, such as a world where everyone has to poop … right now.

It was an interesting change for Family Guy because they were able to keep their sharp and quick cutaways, but they were done within the main plot of the series. The result was one of the most entertaining episodes I’ve seen in awhile.

I loved that FG was able to keep their wit sharp. In one world, it was explained that the Dark Ages repression of science at the hands of Christianity had never happened and so the world was far more advanced than our own. The aforementioned Disney world managed to spoof perfectly the artistic style while at the same time tackling Disney’s Jewish controversies.

I think this is the second time they’ve riffed on Seth Green’s (the voice of Chris) Robot Chicken, and as with last time they made fun of the fact that it was on a little cable network rather than network television.

For me, though, the least interesting world was the dog-human role reversal one, so of course that’s the one the writers had the pair get stuck on. They were able to play with some fun ideas like Stewie pooping on the grass in a public place, meaning Brian had to pick it up.

It’s good to see Family Guy funny like this. I was a little concerned that the well was running dry as I found the seventh season less than inspired. But we’re off to a hilarious start so far in season eight.

So anyway, I just watched the new Family Guy episode on Hulu, and I am just going to write a few things about it. First of all, I would like to say that I have started a new, and that I have prayed a little, asking God for forgiveness, and I am still not satisfied. I hope that by the end of the day I will feel like I have started a good year with a good Yom Kippur.

Ok, so the Family Guy episode: It was ok. I wasn’t absolutely amazed by it, but it was cute. I think that they should have made Brian and Stewie’s problem a bit bigger instead of just jumping from universe to universe. I would give it an 8 out of 10, but it was not a great start to a new season. I think they should make a better second episode. I understand that it was “Brian and Stewie Trip” sort of episode, but those are usually better, with bigger problems. For example, the Road to Rupert episode is a good expression of how the “Road to…” episodes should be. Overall it was good. I thought that the Disney thing with Meg as that fat ugly thing was hilarious, as well as Meg being the bulldog in the last universe. I think that more should have been added, in shorter increments. I also thought that the blocky, choppy universe was funny as well with the little yells, as well as with the Japanese one. It was an “ok” start to another season.

It’s been a busy summer for the Timberwolves. New GM David Kahn put his stamp on the team right away

It’s been a busy summer for the Timberwolves. New GM David Kahn put his stamp on the team right away, ensuring that next year’s Wolves look very different to the team Kevin McHale had assembled. This is a bit weird, considering how last year’s Wolves were playing before Al Jefferson’s injury.

It’s worth nothing that although the Wolves started out the season horribly (especially when Randy Wittman was still the coach), they were 11-8 in the 2009 calendar year when Al Jefferson went down with his season-ending ACL tear. Jefferson had become an elite post scorer, Randy Foye had flourished at the 2-guard spot, and Kevin Love had put a few monster-rebounding games together. If this team had done nothing but stand pat this summer and make use of their #6 draft pick, they’d have a roster that would be primed to make a significant improvement on their woeful 24-58 record based just on the return of Jefferson and improvement from within.

Does this mean Kahn’s screwed up with his overhaul, then? I say no. He’s used existing assets to improve the team in both the short-term and the long-term. The first and biggest deal he made was obviously the Foye and Mike Miller for the 5th pick swap. Miller dogged it in 2008-2009 and Foye, though capable of scoring, wasn’t in Kahn’s long-term plans for good reason. With no desire to extend Foye’s contract, and the stated goal of rebuilding to become a contender a few years down the road, trading these two for a high draft pick was a smart move. Heading into the draft, they had the fifth and sixth picks. Sure, it was a weak draft, but this was a chance to reshape the team.

They couldn’t have expected Ricky Rubio to be there, though. When it was their time to pick and the consensus 2nd-best player in the draft was still on the board, they couldn’t pass on him twice, even with questions about his buyout. So, the Wolves selected him with the #5 pick and followed it up with the confusing pick of Jonny Flynn, the point guard out of Syracuse at #6.

You know what’s happened since. Rubio’s elected to play in Barcelona instead of Minnesota for the next two, probably three years. Bill Simmons and Chad Ford have called Kahn out for screwing up this situation. It seems as if their argument is that the Wolves had a good chance to lure Rubio over next season, if only they hadn’t taken Jonny Flynn. I haven’t seen any evidence to support this claim, though. Financially, the motivation to stay in Europe is very clear – his new team, FC Barcelona, fully bought out his contract with DKV Joventut and, if he chooses to, he has the option to wait until he is no longer bound by the rookie salary scale to come to the NBA. Finances aside, he gets to live and play basketball at home in the great city of Barcelona. I haven’t actually been to Minnesota, but I can understand why a not-yet-19-year-old kid from Barcelona might prefer not to relocate there. I don’t think having the chance to play with Stephen Curry would have changed any of this.

The situation isn’t so bad for Minnesota. It kind of sucks for NBA fans, who are anxious to see Rubio compete against the best of the best, but the Wolves franchise still has a tremendous asset who will come over in a few years when he’s still very, very young in NBA terms. In the meantime, it opened the door for Kahn to ink promising guard Ramon Sessions to a four-year deal for $16 million. For a 23-year-old who has shown a lot of promise, this is a bargain. Of course, it duplicates the problem some saw in having Flynn and Rubio – they now have two point guards who will be competing for playing time. To me, this is a very positive problem to have, though, and one that will be mitigated a bit by giving Sessions some minutes at the 2 guard spot every night. Long-term, they aren’t going to keep Flynn, Sessions, and Rubio on the roster, but if they all develop like we hope they will, there should be plenty of takers for them on the trade market.

Flynn and Sessions aren’t the only newcomers to this squad. In fact, there are only four to five returning players who figure to have a chance to crack Minnesota’s rotation next season: Al Jefferson (duh), Kevin Love (double duh), Ryan Gomes, Corey Brewer, and Brian Cardinal. The other new faces are Wayne Ellington, Ryan Hollins, Antonio Daniels, Chucky Atkins, Damien Wilkins, and Mark Blount. These role players will fill the void left by departing players Sebastian Telfair, Rodney Carney, Mark Madsen, Kevin Ollie, Shelden Williams, and Bobby Brown. You probably don’t care much about any of the names mentioned in the past two sentences, but I thought they were worth mentioning. What you need to know: the names have been shuffled around, but ‘Sota is still weak at the wing positions.

I’m not going to tell you David Kahn is a genius, but his off-season hasn’t been nearly as bad as some have made it out to be. This team isn’t going to make the playoffs, but they’re not supposed to. They are rebuilding. This organization has four solid young guys suiting up next year in Jefferson, Love, Flynn, and Sessions. Plus, there’s that Rubio guy overseas. Their salary situation looks mighty fine to me, as the contracts of Blount, Cardinal, Wilkins, Daniels, Atkins, and Stewie Griffinall expire at the end of the season. None of this guarantees even eventual success, especially as it remains to be seen how the pieces are going to fit, but going forward the most important thing is that this organization has options. Sweet, sweet options.
