Cute, cute and even cuter. These are images that stick in your head like a fun, catchy song. This is the art of Paperlilies (AKA Bryony).

Paperlilies is also best known for her YouTube videos: the kind that get over 1 million hits! And if anyone knows a thing or two about using the net as a successful tool for self-promotion, Paperlilies does!

After having flicked through her artwork via her Flickr galleries, I wanted to find out more about Paperlilies, the artist.

Steve Rack (SR):
Why do you draw characters?

Paperlilies:
I draw characters because it’s fun and I find it quite easy to do.

SR:
Do you have any favorite character designs (as in your own), or do you love them all equally?

Paperlilies:
I like some more than others, usually it depends on how happy I am with their expressions. Sometimes when I am trying to draw or paint something and find it very hard to get right, I’ll end up hating it, but if I manage to get it exactly how I want it, I’ll love it more because of the extra work.

SR:
I see you have created a cute and intriguing race of characters called Blobs. When you create these sorts of characters, do you imagine where they live, their personalities etc?

Paperlilies:
I don’t really. They are usually extremely one dimensional. I think that’s why they are just blobs, they don’t have much personality beyond whatever it is they are doing, though I usually imagine them as fairly amiable characters rather than malicious in any way. I think it would be hard to make them more ’rounded’ in terms of their personalities as then I’d have to include more details on their faces, which would kind of ruin their simplicity.

SR:
How has the internet affected your creative journey as an artist?

Paperlilies:
I hadn’t really considered trying to sell art before I made a video on my YouTube channel showing me painting a blob guy, sped up. I put it on eBay and it sold! It was more likely because of the audience I already had on YouTube that it had any interest, so if it weren’t for that, I don’t think I would have moved forward with painting as I have done. Since then I’ve had a few ‘Stickam painting’ days, where I’ve gone live on Stickam for a whole day and painted whatever the audience asked me to, subsequently selling the paintings and prints of the paintings. I love working in this way because I find painting very relaxing, and it’s a great way to interact with people and generate ideas.

SR:
Where do you find your inspiration for all your wonderful characters?

Paperlilies:
Aside from the Stickam days, I sometimes will just sit and start to draw and see what comes out. I find that I draw better when I don’t have a fixed idea in my mind that I want to put on the page. When I am stuck for ideas, I often refer to the book ‘Meet Mr Product‘, which is lots of images of old product spokescharacters (think the Green Giant, Tony The Tiger, etc). I love the old style of printing that restricted colour and printing techniques and meant that artists had to be more sparing and thus more ingenious with their design.

SR:
Who are your favorite artists right now?

Paperlilies:
I love Lizzlizz, who I am fortunate enough to call a friend. She does amazing comics that are hilarious, and I love Wirrow’s work, but then I am biased, seeing as he’s my boyfriend. I also love Apak! They’re my favourites of the moment.

SR:
What advice might you give to an aspiring artist wanting to get their work ‘out there’, but lacks the self-esteem or self-motivation to do so?

Paperlilies:
I think networking is quite important. Sites like Flickr and DeviantArt are great to get things online, and are great ways to interact with other people who are into the same things as you. Something I think is worthwhile is going in for competitions online, as they not only have a prize and may get your name and work in front of other people, but it spurs you on to create, instead of just thinking about what you ought to do next. Also, it hones your skills. When I used to work in an office, I would do Worth1000.com competitions in my spare time so my Photoshop skills didn’t get rusty.

SR:
What do you think makes a great character design?

Paperlilies:
I think the expression is 80% of it for me. If a character looks amazing but has a rubbish face, I’m unlikely to love it. I like things with whimsy and cuteness mostly rather than dark, brooding characters.

SR:
If you could be any character in the world (just for one day), who would you be?

Paperlilies:
Anything that could fly.

SR:
What’s in the future for Bryony?

Paperlilies:
I’m working towards doing more stickam days, more YouTube stuff, maybe a new TV show of some kind, finishing the zombie movie I’m working on, producing more work for the Thing zine fair in March 2010, and hopefully a trip to New York sometime in the Spring. I also want to get into prop making and special effects makeup, but I think that’s all a long way off. I have a lot of irons in the fire!

SR:
Where can I buy your artwork?

Paperlilies:
Whenever I have Stickam days (and subsequent eBay auctions) I announce it on twitter, my blog, and on YouTube, and also I have recently opened a shop where you can buy postcards, badges and my zine.

SR:
And finally, what do you want for Christmas?

Paperlilies:
A bunch of new canvasses, ceramcoat paint (which I can never find in the UK!), a hair curling iron and some good whiskey.

I guess we’re going to Best Buy at a very early hour on Friday. We being, the drummer of my band, Ben, and I. I don’t know our plans exactly yet, but we’re probably just going to observe the chaos and become a part of it. Maybe we’ll shoot some video footage. Likely not inside the store, but of the line outside, and on the bus afterwards recalling our experiences.

It’s what we do…

Over the last few months, TinyChat has established itself as a highly popular video chat service. Today, the company launched a new product, TinyChat.tv, which competes directly with established companies like Ustream and Stickam. Signing up and getting started with TinyChat.tv only takes a minute. Users can customize their video chat rooms with different themes, background images and colors. The old TinyChat.com, which doesn’t require signups, will continue to work, though users will get access to more features on TinyChat.tv.

Features

TinyChat.tv’s interface will feel very familiar if you used the regular TinyChat before.

Room owners can customize the look and feel of their rooms and decide if they want to force users to sign in with their Twitter or Facebook accounts. One feature we really liked on TinyChat was that users could type a random URL (tinychat.com/12345) and the service would automatically create a room with this URL. This feature hasn’t been enabled on TinyChat.tv yet, but TinyChat’s co-founder Dan Blake tells us that it will come back soon.

For $9.95 per month, users can also buy a pro membership that allows them to set passwords for rooms and stream higher quality video.

For Developers: Free Streaming with TinyChat API

For developers, TinyChat now offers a comprehensive free application programming interface (API) that makes it easy for developers to create their own Ustream clones. Indeed, TinyChat.tv itself was built on top of this API. Earlier today, Dan Blake told us that TinyChat will not charge developers for bandwidth. Stickam currently charges $0.45 per gigabyte for its streamAPI white label service.

Overall, this is a nice upgrade to the regular TinyChat experience. The old TinyChat, where users don’t need to sign up will continue to operate. The big development is the API, however, and we are looking forward to seeing what developers will do with it.

In just the few months since it was released this summer, Apple’s video streaming to the iPhone has become a part of many business plans. Two announcements were made on that front today:

Multicast announced full support for transcoding, managing, delivering and displaying content on the iPhone, both live and on-demand. However, the company’s customers tend to be corporate — from internal teams like investor relations, human resources and sales that put on live events — while the iPhone is still mainly a consumer device. Nevertheless, it’s useful to have your main online video platform provide extensions to all sorts of devices.

Meanwhile, Stickam, the live video community site, today launched an iPhone SDK of its own. The idea is that other companies, for instance partner 211me, which works with celebrities, can build their own iPhone apps that include Stickam live streaming and chat. 211me’s first Stickam-powered app will be for Twilight star Peter Facinelli. Competitor Kyte already simplifies this process even further, enabling stars and their entourages to make video apps for various mobile platforms.

In other recent iPhone video news, Brightcove pre-announced an iPhone SDK and Livestream added iPhone streaming last week at our NewTeeVee Live conference.

On Stickam… it seems everyone’s intentions are to sit in front of the webcam to spill their guts to the world… yapping about ”he said she said” and other basic drama. Some have unique ideas… but these are highly overwhelmed by the millions of live feeds of drama suffocating every viewer’s computer screen. haha.

Which brings me to my idea, which is to play guitar and teach guitar via webcam. Sooo, if you’re interested in listening to some music (either soothing acoustic, or some electric… genres ranging)… or if you’re interested in learning a thing or two about guitar, or how I’ve learned, then be sure to attend when I next turn on the webcam.

it’s no secret.  i’m an avid social networker.  always have been.  unfortunately for me, i have lost a LOT of my contacts through the years for various reasons.  i got into freelance modeling a few years ago and had a HUGE network base.  as i fell out of that, i killed off my “stage name” and ended up losing that bunch of people.   i had a “fan base” of over ten thousand people on myspace before i deleted it.  i asked people to “follow me” through onto the next project, but lost people, sadly.

i wanted to pursue photography for a while and decided to kick the modeling to be behind the camera.  it’s better this way, i believe.  i’ve been using “wang takes photos” as my photography outlet.  i feel that it’s plain and simple; my name and what i do.

the whole “vegan wang” came into play when my ex actually created a quick gamer tag for my xbox.  he just used “vegan wang.”  it actually is very fitting, since my name is wang and i am vegan.  i get some dirty jokes here and there about it, but it’s fun.  that’s what i have been using for all of my accounts.  i added the x’s for “decoration” i suppose haha.  but it also serves the purpose of me being straightedge.  it all works out, although sometimes it’s a pain in the ass to explain to people what URL’s are.  however, i think it’s great because it allows me to have several “pet projects” going on at once, since i’m using my name. a few people said that my name might drive people away with the “vegan” name but that’s a risk i’m willing to take. i want people to know that not every vegan out there is a crazy nut who runs around preaching to people all day!

Recently I have visited the popular video social site which is named “Stickam“. Very similar to “Ustreamtv“. Both sites you can host your own video show, basically you have your own television show at the comforts of your own home. This is perfect for bloggers, radio host wannabes and Dee JaysYou could even do a live performance of your favorite local bands.

Great ideal right? Yeah, Slow down a minute. I have visit both sites and so far I haven’t witness any bad behavior on Ustreamtv but on the other hand with Stickam, I was amazed. I have seen nudity and public masturbation with both of the sexes. I have chatted on occasionally, surprised realizing, how many innocent children were visiting the Stickam site daily. Unsupervised children are sitting in front of their computer in the kitchen and living rooms while their families are walking in the background cleaning the house and making dinner. Meanwhile some other child are on the computer masturbating for the world to see. Look I understand the rights people have and I don’t care if you don’t care but some children are conflicted on being the person they want to be. Even though mental they are not there yet. I recently saw a couple of articles where three men were charge in different locations for trying to get some girl to show more than they should.   One problem in this is that the are no age restrictions or age verification within this site. Unless she looks like she is twelve you really don’t know. Is it right to chat with anyone and try to persuade them to go topless? probably so, morally wrong, but is it illegal if the girl or boy is above a certain age? Are the victims be punish too for getting nude on camera in a public site?” are we going for the defense that “The devil made me do it”.  Should we look closer at the family nucleus as a whole? Should we help parents understand the dangers of the internet? you think the parents will eventually realize that their child should not be in front of a cam with people they do not know!

Hello beloved interweb friends,

We hope everyone had an awesome summer, I know we did. Between tour, all the random one off shows, recording, and finally solidifying our line up it’s been a summer to remember. On top of that we have some REALLY big announcements to share with you soon… Expect a LOT of changes to be happening around these parts in the next month

…Which leads me to my next point- the name change. If you’re reading this, chances are you got our tweet saying that we’ve changed our name… Well it’s true! From this point on The In Crowd is now We Are The In Crowd! This might seem kind of sudden but we’re looking at it as kind of a blessing in disguise! We ran into a little legal trouble with the name “The In Crowd”, it was a little tougher to trademark the name than we thought so instead of crying about it we just changed the name! We’re really stoked on it, hopefully you guys learn to love it too! We’re still The In Crowd, you can still call us The In Crowd, we basically just made our name a little longer. We went through a lot of different variations of The In Crowd and decided to settle with this one because it’s the least confusing. We’ll still be selling our current merch, and we’ll still be playing all the same songs. Think of it as our formal name, like my full name is Michael U. Ferri, but people call me MikeFerri. I’m down with either, and so are we! Hopefully you’ll all stick with us and realize that no matter what we’re called we’re still the same people, and we’re going to continue to try to write awesome songs for the world to dance to.

So I went to Dutch Wonderland today from 9-3ish. It was so awesome lol. For those of you who don’t know what it is, it’s an amusement park meant for the little ones. I’m 19 and that was so much fun. I came out of there being a 7-time champion at the water gun game, a 2-time champion at whack-a-mole and since the park was only open to kids with cancer and their families there were no lines and me and one little dude rode the rollercoaster like 15-20 times in a row. So much fun holy crap. I got cotton candy and won a black teddy bear, haha. It was a cool thing they did there…it was through the livestrong organization.

I’m headed to see the movie Zombieland later tonight.

I will probably be on stickam before I go to the movies, and/or after.

I decided to upload 2 videos to youtube that have been sitting in my video folder for awhile, just never felt like uploading them till last night.

I found out today that Bek and I have to go to Hutchins for our Audio Design class next year D: How horrid! I don’t like Hutchins. They’re all fags and homos.

Tomorrow is St Michael’s Day and we have cathedral in the morning so I miss Faith and Life. Then we get a cream bun, thankyou tradition and then it’s Graphics and English again. Hoorah! Except cathedral sucks because the seats hurt my little bum, awh
