I will be scouring the midstate today during a round of college football games. I want to find out what fans who spend entire calendar days devoted to following the sport think of issues ranging from the BCS and its effects to the idea of the student-athlete and issues of amateurism. There is a smart and informed viewing public in the midstate, where the taverns and restaurants brim with jerseys and spirit every college football Saturday. Their voices will be the live focus of the College Football Forum today. Follow it here with regular live updates as the stories unfold and the debates continue.

To consider:

Are there true student-athletes anymore?

Should the performers who fill the arenas be paid a stipend?

Is tuition, room and board, training food and amenities, etc., enough compensation?

Are athletes being exploited by the “football factories?”

Is the BCS a fair way to crown a champion?

How is the BCS affecting conference structures?

Are the shifting conferences affecting the sport?

As the daughter of two vicars, I think I’m one of the few people (comparatively!) who realise quite how hard vicars actually work. I have had people ask me, in all seriousness, ‘doesn’t your mum just work on Sundays then?’. I almost laughed in their face… Oh, if only they knew.

My mum’s work day starts at 9am, after we’ve all got up at 7am to walk the dog. She’ll begin with emails, and then staff prayers. On Thursdays, however, her day begins at 6:30am as she gets up to prepare for women’s prayers, beginning in our living room at 7am (I told you our house was mental). After staff prayers at 9:30 (usually finishing around 10), it’s onto either admin or meetings. The meetings could be with anyone from the archdeacon to a random person who came to church for the first time last Sunday. Break for half an hour at 1pm for lunch, unless it’s a Tuesday, in which case it’s staff lunch from 12:30 – 2:30pm. Meetings and / or admin all afternoon, sometimes there would be meetings at 2 – 3:30, 3:30 – 5, 5 – 6:30 and then an evening meeting starting at 7:30. It sometimes gets to the point that at 11pm I have to go up to her study and tell her to turn off her computer and go to bed. On average, I’d say my mother works at least 11 hours a day, 6 days a week. And when she gets up at 5am to write a sermon on a Sunday morning, that can be pushed to 14 hours.

And let’s be honest, vicars aren’t exactly well paid. Yes, you get a nice house, but you do have to share that with 100 other people as part of your life. Incidentally, a vicar’s salary isn’t actually called a ‘salary’, it’s called a ‘stipend’. This means that instead of being paid for the work they do, vicars are actually paid so that they are able to do the work that they do.

The problem with my gorgeous mother, however, is that she takes this seriously. In fact, she doesn’t even see her job as a job – that’s how much she loves it. It is so totally and utterly her that she doesn’t actually realise that she’s working half the time. I, on the other hand, really do.

Initially, I just decided to let her get on with it. After all, I wasn’t used to her working full time (her and dad had job-shared up until I was 16) so maybe I was overreacting. But when it hit the point where I would literally have come downstairs from bed in order to tell her to get into hers, I started gently suggesting that maybe, just maybe, she was working a little too hard. Her response? ‘Oh no don’t be daft, I love my job!’
‘That might be the case, mum, but that doesn’t change the fact that you’ve been working 11 hour days for the past 5 months…’
‘I suppose, but still!’
‘Hmm’

To be fair to her, however, she is exceptionally good at taking a day off; something which not many vicars excel in. So mum, if you’re reading this; well done. I hope you have a lovely day off tomorrow. But please go to bed soon.

You’d be surprised just how few vicars actually realise how much they work, and you’d be even more surprised how many people think that vicars don’t work at all. If anyone ever says to you that your parent ‘must only work on Sundays’, do me a favour and put them right, because if one more person says that to me, I cannot be held responsible for my reaction…

P.S. Thanks to a gorgeous friend for showing me this video (0:49 onwards):

I am writing to seek your assistance in identifying bright young students for graduate study in Chemistry or Biochemistry. As the Department Head of the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at New Mexico State University, I am in charge of recruiting students for our PhD program, which is ranked 70th nationally by the National Science Foundation. Our department has 17 faculty members who are dedicated to excellence in both teaching and research. Not only do they provide almost daily basic assistance in research activities, but also help their students find good career positions upon completion of their graduate degree. Recent graduates of our program have received postdoctoral positions at Los Alamos National Laboratories, The Ohio State University, the University of California–Santa Barbara, the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Texas. Some graduate students have gone onto careers in academia and government, while others are employed in research positions at companies such as Eli–Lilly, Pfizer, and Aventis.

We offer competitive teaching assistantships to all students admitted into our program. We do not admit students into our program that cannot be supported financially during their first year of study. The maximum annual stipend is $21,289. Students after their first year are typically supported by research funds from their chosen advisor or from departmental funds, provided that they are making good progress toward completion of their graduate degree.

We offer M. S. and Ph. D. degrees in the five traditional subdisciplines of chemistry, Analytical, Biochemistry, Inorganic, Organic, and Physical, plus research in Toxicology. More information about the research projects available to students in our program can be found at http://www.chemistry.nmsu.edu. I am also including a small brochure that provides the type of research being done at our department in all areas of our graduate program.

Students interested in applying for admission into our program should contact Ms. Denise Pedraza at the following address:

SONOMA (KCBS) – The County of Sonoma is raising a red flag about its dwindling firefighting ra

SONOMA (KCBS) – The County of Sonoma is raising a red flag about its dwindling firefighting ranks. Officials hope several dozen people will answer this urgent call to volunteer.

Presently, there are 60 volunteer firefighter vacancies throughout the Sonoma County Fire and Emergency Services Department’s 15 units. That amounts to one in five positions unfilled.

The need is greatest in the most rural pockets on the region where, perhaps not surprisingly in this economy, many of the locals who could volunteer so close to home are working elsewhere.

“Many people choose to live in the rural areas and then commute out,” acknowledged Sonoma County Fire Chief Mark Aston. “Some of the staffing challenges that we have in our particular area have to do with the ranch land and farm land.”

“Most of us travel long distances to work and we’re not working in the communities where we live,” he added.

“We’re being creative and innovative,” Aston said optimistically, “and coming up with a variety of what we call non-resident programs.”

KCBS’ Margie Shafer Reports: [audio_link url="http://www.podtrac.com/pts/redirect.mp3/nyc.podcast.play.it/media/d0/d0/d1/d1/dB/dC/dN/11BCN_3.MP3" name="Sonoma County Struggles to Fill Volunteer Firefighter Vacancies" artist="Margie Shafer"]

Even if residency requirements were to be relaxed, Aston recognizes that the time commitment – and lack of generous compensation – prove to be sticking points for many would-be volunteers.

“There’s really no difference between what a career firefighter that’s on duty 240 hours a month, at a minimum, is expected to know and do, and a volunteer,” he acknowledged. “So, it takes a tremendous commitment.”

Volunteer firefighters are required to undergo a minimum of 150 hours of basic training.

“It’s not just fires,” he pointed out. “We respond to hazardous calls and rescues and medical calls and, of course, vegetation fires and structure fires.”

“Probably one of our largest call volumes for fires in our area is for vehicle-related fires.”

“We look for a minimum of 5 years,” Aston was upfront about the commitment expected of a volunteer firefighter. “It’s going to take a year to a year-and-a-half to get them and their skills up to where they really need to be.”

Sonoma County recently received word that it would receive nearly $275,000 in grant funding from the Dept. of Homeland Security, and Aston hoped to dole it out in the form of modest stipends and financial incentives for training sessions, travel costs and retention awards.

I have had a premium Second Life account since I started. For over five years I’ve paid my $10

I have had a premium Second Life account since I started. For over five years I’ve paid my $10 a month to have the opportunity to own land. I’ve collected my 300L a week on Tuesdays & used them to pay for advertising for the SLA Review. I dropped down from a large quantity of land to a 512 to house my office. When Linden homes came around I walked around every home sim checking it out. I passed because, although a good idea, I didn’t want to give up my office or have to live next to someone like that.

I’ve rented from countless places. Land. Homes. Shacks & mansions. At one point I even lived in a sewer just to write a review about it.

Mr. C. Cow Needs A Lot Of Room To Moo.

Yes. I have used the premium member sandbox often. But, if you think about it, you can basically just go to any sandbox to rez something. If you belong to some communities you can just use their sandbox. If you rent land you can just build there. While it’s always empty at a premium sandbox it doesn’t really make too big of an impact on me.

This brings me to the premium gifts offered to those of us that shell out the ten dollars a month. We’ve been given stuff from furniture to a sail boat with few things in between. For paying a monthly fee to be a premium member I feel that we should at least get something every month. Not this every so often in more of a “Oh shit! We need to hand out something” format we seem to follow now.

Eat. My. Dust.

Our current premium gift is a dune buggy & landmark to a place called “Racers Gulch (G)”. Like the sailboat & railroad thing it’s nice that they include a place we can actually use it. I have yet to find this racing fun they speak of as I have never actually run into anyone at Racers Gulch. As for bringing my friends to race with me that proves to be difficult. One reason is because I am a hermit. The other reason is that none of them actually have a premium account. Some use to but they no longer do. Those that actually have one really have no interest in racing a dune buggy.

I Can Change It’s Colors & Patterns.

From gifts to a sad little stipend a week to a free home that looks like it’s been dropped in the middle of a slum I am starting to fail to see the point of actually paying for a premium account anymore. Owning land? Well…you see…I would have to pay for the privilege of owning land. Buy the land. Pay more on top of my monthly account (if it’s larger than a 512). If I buy a sim or island or whatever I would need to pay even more on top of the monthly fees. I cannot justify spending so much damn real life money on something that is virtual.

So I sat down & really thought about it. I did the math using a L$ converter and a calculator. Took the monthly members account & subtracted the real life money totals from the stipend. Added up the cost of the place that I rent. I looked at how many prims I get from combining the prims from my office with the prims from my rental home. Taking these numbers I compared them to renting a large chunk of land with a nice amount of prims.

What I found is that, despite the sparse gifts & a special sandbox I would save money by just renting land. Land in a community that I spend most of my time anyways. It would put me closer to future projects I have brewing. It would actually benefit my office to be here instead of on this tiny 512 in the sky. I might lose this “premium member” status but in all reality does the title actually mean anything? From this viewpoint it doesn’t mean squat anymore.

What do you think? Do you have a premium account? Did you use to have one? I’m curious as to what others have to say.
