Those of you who like me have lived their childhood in 70s Germany may well remember designer Graziela’s hearts. My mom was a regular reader of Brigitte, a women’s magazine which promoted many of Graziela’s designs that were typical 70s bold graphic style. The Seventies always make me think of block-stripes in red-white and blue-white, pril-flowers (stickers that came with a washing-liquid) and those hearts. I remember having bedlinen in Graziela fabric and I still have remnants of a handkerchief and some swatches of a fabric very similar to her designs, which was used for a ‘princess’-dress I wore for carnival in primary-school. In our days retro-craze it was only a question of time  that somebody answered all the requests for a reprint. Luckily, that somebody is the designer herself, together with her daughter. You can read and see more of them in their  blog. And I splurged on 2 metres of the 150 m limited reprint fabric! Ha! It arrived yesterday, in time to fill myself the stocking for Saint Nicholas-Day or as a slightly premature birthday-present. I have no tangible idea what to do with it, it may just crown my stash for a while… Here is the parcel, together with the original hankie-remnant:

Diejenigen, die wie ich ihre Kindheit im 70er Jahre Deutschland verbrachten, werden sich noch gut an Graziela’s Herzen erinnern. Meine Mutter war eine regelmäßige Brigitte-Leserin, mit der die typischen Siebziger-Graziela-Designs verbreitet wurden. Die Siebziger lassen mich immer an rot-weiße und blau-weiße Blockstreifen, Prilblumen und eben diese Herzen denken. Ich erinnere mich, dass ich Graziela-Bettwäsche hatte, einen Taschentuch-Rest und einige Stücke von dem Graziela-ähnlichem Stoff, aus dem mein Prinzessinnen-Kleid für den Grundschul-Fasching genäht war, habe ich immer noch. In unserem heutigen Retro-Wahn war es nur eine Frage der Zeit, bis jemand die Nachfrage für eine Neuauflage bediente. Dieser Jemand ist glücklicherweise die Designerin selbst, zusammen mit ihrer Tochter. Mehr über die beiden kann man in ihrem blog erfahren. Und ich habe mir 2 Meter von dem auf 150m limitierten Neudruck gegönnt! Ha! Gestern angekommen, gerade rechtzeitig um ihn mir selbst in den Nikolaus-Stiefel zu stecken oder als leicht verfrühtes Geburtstagsgeschenk. Ich habe noch keine konkrete Idee was ich mit dem Stoff machen will, er wird wohl einfach eine Weile meinen Stapel bekrönen… Und hier ist das Päckchen, zusammen mit dem original Taschentuch-Rest.

In my kitchen was a glass full of lavender, standing next to the teas. I bought that organic lavender because I like the smell and simply couldn’t resist buying it, with no particular idea of what to do with it. So I poured it into a weck-glass and there it was, next to the teas and from time to time I thought I should do something with it before its getting faded. And then, some weeks ago, it hit me: make tea-bags with lavender! So I disassembled a bag, drank the Earl Grey, made some sort of pattern and started cutting and filling:

It was fun and now I have some lovely-smelling tags for sale and for my Christmas-presents:

And I also very much like the tin-box!

In unserer Küche stand ein Glas mit Lavendel neben den Tee-Packungen. Ich habe den mal gekauft, weil ich einfach den Geruch mag und dem Kauf nicht wiederstehen konnte, ohne genaue Idee was damit zu tun sei. Also ab in’s Glas und neben den Tee, und von Zeit zu Zeit dachte ich, dass ich ja mal was damit machen solle bevor er blass und fade wird. Und dann, vor ein paar Wochen, kam’s mir: Lavendelsäckchen-Teebeutel! Also Earl-Grey-Beutel aufgeschnippelt, ‘ne Art Schnittmuster gebastelt, den Tee getrunken, zugeschnitten und mit dem Lavendel gefüllt. Hat Spaß gemacht und nun habe ich wohlriechende Geschenkanhänger für den Shop und für mich. Und die Dose mag ich auch sehr!

Well, we are entering into our final phase here in language school! After a year of study which has gone very quickly, we are only 3 weeks away from our final exams and our preparations for returning to Australia.
We are very excited knowing that our time quickly approaches for our arrival in Togo (we have no definite time yet but it will be next year and as early as possible!)
This particular time will be very busy and will involve lots of big decision making. We ask for your continued prayers specifically for: our final exams, the organization and actual job of packing up here in France and flying home, that our time with family and friends in Australia will be blessed and refreshing for all concerned, that we will have wisdom when making logistical decision regarding the move to Togo, that we will be able to maintain our French with the help of a tutor while in Australia, that we will continue to grow our prayer and financial support as new churches begin to journey with us and finally, that we would be an encouragement to those we meet with and visit with while we are in Australia.
We thank all of your for your continued prayer support and we look forward to keeping you up to date with our progress towards Togo over the next few months!

De alltid sanningssträvande skapar sig en bild av att vara annorlunda. Egna. Tänker på de stora frågorna, håller dem för viktiga.

Det senaste stoffet verkar dock vara ett bett i sin egna svans.

Yesterday was finally the craft-fair near Elmshorn that made me nervous the last weeks. My favourite assistant was with me, he was the man at the button-covering-machine, earning money he spent right away at the neighbouring stands. We had set up our stand the evening before and though you can’t see a lot of it in this picture (but a rare pic of me!) I think it looked quite nice, friendly and colourful.

Some former colleagues, my Dad and his companion and my friend Kerstin and her family came and visited us, that was really nice, but still, we were a bit disappointed: we didn’t sell as much as we had anticipated and I think due to a few reasons accumulating: there weren’t as many customers (and vendors) as in the years before, in the picture below it is as crowded as it got, I think there are too many competing markets like this. Then people in these times don’t have as much spending money than they used to have and my products are pricey compared to mass-products and those selling underpriced because they don’t value their own work. And the visitors of these markets are mostly elderly people looking for rather traditional Christmas-fare and that’s not my style, though some told me they liked the ‘fresher’ look I had to offer. They should have bought more instead of praising!

So, it was OK, but not really good. An only slightly better experience than the market in Niebüll last year, but thankfully not as far away. Last year I was asked by DaWanda to post about that market, but I have to admit that after earning about as much as spending on fuel I didn’t really feel like writing about that experience, it seemed to be too difficult not to lie but still be positive and my energy was on low.
This time it’s a bit different, I know from experience that I can sell my stuff online and I might take part in another market in spring, now that I know how to prepare and set up my stand I’m getting more relaxed about it.

Gestern war nun also der große Kunsthandwerkermarkt bei Elmshorn wegen dem ich die ganze letzte Zeit etwas nervös war. Mein Lieblings-Assistent war dabei, er war der Mann an der Knopfbeziehmaschine mit der er das Geld verdiente, dass er gleich an den Nachbarständen umsetzte. Wir hatten am Abend zuvor aufgebaut und obwohl man im Bild nicht viel davon sieht (aber ein seltenes Foto von mir!), sah unser Stand bunt und freundlich aus.

Frühere Kolleginnen, mein Vater und seine Freundin und meine Freundin Kerstin samt Familie kamen uns zu besuchen, das war schön, und doch: wir waren etwas enttäuscht: wir haben nicht soviel verkauft wie erwartet (und erhofft), wohl aus Gründen, die sich summierten: es waren weder so viele Kunden noch Stände wie in den Vorjahren dort, im Foto oben ist’s schon ungefähr am Vollsten, ich denke, dass es mittlerweile zu viele solche konkurrierenden Märkte gibt. Die Leute haben in diesen Zeiten auch nicht mehr so viel Geld in der Tasche und meine Preise sind im Verhältnis zu der üblichen Massenware und zu den Verkäufern, die ihre Sachen verschleudern weil sie ihre eigene Arbeit nicht wertschätzen, recht hoch. Dazu kommt, dass viele Besucher der Adventsmärkte dieser Art eher ältere Menschen sind, die nach traditionelleren Weihnachtssachen Ausschau halten, und das ist nunmal nicht mein Ding, es gab ja auch einige, die meinen ‘frischeren’ Look gut fanden. Die hätten mehr kaufen als loben sollen!

Also war’s insgesamt OK, aber nicht wirklich gut. Eine nur etwas bessere Erfahrung als der Markt in Niebüll letztes Jahr, gottseidank nicht so weit weg. Letztes Jahr wurde ich von DaWanda gebeten, einen Blogpost über den Markt zu schreiben, aber ich muss zugeben, dass ich keine Lust mehr hatte, nachdem ich ungefähr soviel Geld eingenommen hatte wie die Benzinkosten waren. Es schien zu schwierig nicht zu lügen und doch positiv zu bleiben, dafür hatte ich keine Energie mehr. Diesmal ist es anders, ich weiß aus der Erfahrung, dass ich meine Sachen ja noch online verkaufen kann und ich könnte mir vorstellen, im Frühling wieder an einem Markt teilzunehmen, jetzt wo ich weiß, wie ich mich vorbereite und meinen Stand aufbaue, da bin ich etwas entspannter.

Und zwar, und das macht sie noch fabelhafter, aus Stoff. Jim Henson kann seine Muppets einpacken, würde ich sagen, wenn ich nicht ein großer Fan und Bewunderer seiner Arbeit wäre. Er möge auf ewig im Himmel seinen Frieden finden. Aber wir waren bei Lisa Lichtenfels. Es ist fa-bel-haft.

Jag använder checkgmail som berättar för mig när jag får mail. Det programmet är jättebra. Men på sistone när jag klickar på ikonen för att liksom snabböppna gmail i min webläsare, så kommer jag till gmails loginsida. Det är alltså inte som förut när man blir automatiskt inloggad.
Hur ska jag göra?

Jo, efter lite googlande fick jag fram detta, ändra i checkgmails preferences “Command to execute on clicking the tray icon” från standard ‘firefox %u’ till ‘firefox http://mail.google.com/mail/#inbox’, så löser det problemet! Verkar som att checkgmails variabel %u inte längre genererar en korrekt url för gmail, eller något!

(Som vanligt var det inte personen i filmen som skrivit brevet.)

After that workshop I was partly enthusiastic about silkscreen-printing, partly taken aback: for me it is really the ideal way of producing truly unique fabrics and sew things that no-one else has to offer, and – it’s fun! I don’t usually take part in the endless discussions about copyright and who did what first, I think in many cases a bag is a bag is a bag and the chances are big that you unwillingly do something somebody else does at the same time just by combining the fabrics everybody likes at the moment. And this makes it difficult at times to have a signature style within the mainstream (sort of). Most of the time I try to, but I also found out that at least one other seller on DaWanda has a very similar way of combining things. That was one reason why I thought of personalizing some of my products and silkscreen-printing seemed to be a fairly easy way to do so. The other is that simply putting together other peoples designs is sometimes a bit boring. But: the workshop was by a professional with professional equipment and she made us (well, me at least) think that this was the only proper way to do silkscreen-printing. No surprise it seemed that you have to invest lots, I mean really lots of money and even more workspace just to get going. It was intimidating. As for the workspace I thought of the garage we rent two streets away, but there’s no running water, then I searched ebay for screenprinting-tools and screens but the prices are incredible, you can just as well buy everything new. I could really well relate to Alex’ post about her reasons to start printing and her problems how to go about it. But then I ordered these two books printing by hand and lotta prints and came across this site: printcutsew and: the american approach of ‘yes, we can!’ was just what I needed: here at patchworkshop I ordered a starter kit by speedball and started. See, I can! And a 9 1/2 year-old, too!

Nach dem Workshop war ich teils begeistert, teils abgeschreckt: es ist für mich eine ideale Art, wirklich einzigartige Stoffe und Produkte herzustellen und es macht Spaß! Ich nehme üblicherweise nicht an der endlosen Diskussion über Copyright und wer-was-zuerst-gemacht-hat teil, in den meisten Fällen ist eine Tasche ist eine Tasche ist eine Tasche und es kann durchaus passieren, dass man unbewusst zur gleichen Zeit dasselbe macht wie ein anderer, einfach dadurch, dass man die gleichen Stoffe miteinander kombiniert, die alle gerade toll finden. Das macht es auch so schwierig, einen eigenen Stil zu haben, der gleichzeitig Trend-kompatibel ist. Ich versuche es zwar meist, aber auch ich habe schon mindestens eine DaWanda-Verkäuferin gesehen, die in ähnlicher Weise näht. Das war der eine Grund, es mit Siebdruck zu versuchen, der andere ist, das es schlicht mitunter etwas langweilig ist, nur anderer Leute Design zu verarbeiten. Aber: der Workshop wurde von einer professionellen Siebdruckerin mit professioneller Ausstattung durchgeführt und sie ließ uns (zumindest mich) in dem Glauben, dass man nur so richtig Drucken kann. Es schien, als ob man richtig viel Geld und auch viel Platz dafür investieren müsse um loslegen zu können. Einschüchternd! Als Werkstatt dachte ich zunächst an die Garage, die wir zwei Straßen weiter angemietet haben, aber da gibt’s kein fließend Wasser. Dann war ich auf ebay auf der Suche nach der Ausrüstung und Sieben, aber die Preise sind auch dort unglaublich, man kann fast genauso gut neu kaufen. Ich konnte Alex’ post sehr gut verstehen, ihre Überlegungen und Probleme. Aber dann habe ich diese beiden Bücher bestellt: printing by hand und lotta prints und ich habe diese Seite gefunden:  printcutsew und –  der amerikanische Ansatz ‘yes, we can!’ war genau was ich brauchte. Bei patchworkshop bestellte ich ein starter kit von speedball und fing an. Seht, ich kann! Und ein 9 1/2 jähriger auch!

Nu melodikrysset!

Jeg innser at dette er alvorlige saker. At det finnes hyggeligere påskudd for å bringe til torgs tips om underholdningsserier og god musikk, men etter flere oppslag i nyhetene den siste uka, klarer jeg ikke helt å dy meg. Det er på tide å trekke fram to uforglemmelige kulturprodukter der metamfetamin spiller en sentral rolle, den ene i produksjonsprosessen den andre i det ferdige produktet.

La oss begynne med tilfellet der det sentralstimulerende stoffet har fungert som katalysator for den kreative prosessen. Rufus Wainwright har lenge vært åpen om hva som var drivstoff i produksjonen av plata Want One som kom ut i 2003. I dette intervjuet som jeg gjorde med den New York-baserte kanadieren under Quart-festivalen i 2006 snakker han fritt om fordelene og ulempene ved å lage musikk under påvirkning av tyngre narkotiske stoffer.
- Det har blitt laget fantastisk musikk i rus, men det har blitt laget enda bedre musikk uten. Som den klassiskfanatikeren jeg er, sammenligner jeg gjerne The Rolling Stones med for eksempel Gustav Mahler. The Stones var rusa. De var unge menn i sin beste alder. Mahler var nykter. Han gjorde alt alene og hans musikk spilles ennå, nesten 200 år etterpå. Det er gøy å lage musikk på dop, men en mye større utfordring å klare det uten, sa Wainwright som til slutt ble midlertidig blind av stoffet og lagt inn på avrusning. Under intervjuet foretrakk han sjokolademelk.

Ved nærmere ettersyn er det kanskje ikke så overraskende at dop av ett eller annet slag hadde vært inne i bildet. Fantastisk musikk ble det i alle fall.

I det andre eksempelet er det ikke snakk om at noen har brukt metamfetamin i produksjonsprosessen (i alle fall ikke så vidt meg bekjent), men at de har viet produktet til stoffet, dets brukere og dets utviklere. Den Emmy-vinnnede TV-serien Breaking Bad handler om den kommunegråe kjemikeren Walter White som kunne ha hatt en stor fremtid på sitt fagfelt, men som av grunner som vi etter hvert skal få vite mer om jobber som high school-lærer og bilvasker. Walt bor sammen med sin gravide kone Skyler og sin celebral-parese-rammede sønn Walter White Jr og sliter i det hele tatt med å holde det gående. Og verre skal det bli. I første episode får Walt diagnosen lungekreft og mannen som allerede jobber dobbelt for å holde den voksende familien forsørget, skyves ut i desperasjon. Gjennom sin svoger i narkotikapolitiet oppdager han ved en tilfeldighet hvor mye penger det er å tjene i produksjonen av chrystal meth (krystallisk metamfetamin) og den desperate mannen øyner en vei ut av ulykken. Når Walt finner tilbake til sin gamle dopdealende elev Jesse Pinkman utvikler serien seg i dramatisk retning.  Dette er Falling Down i møte med Nobelprisen i kjemi. Etter en åpningsscene som dette kan det bare gå en vei:

Inatt hade jag Iphonen på laddning. Det behövdes. Så istället använde jag jobbmobilen som väckarklocka. Vilket är helt ok. Jag vaknade.. var väl rätt trött. Men gick upp.. efter en stund märkte jag.. Vafan står klockan på 05.45 för? Jo det ska jag förklara för dig.

Jobbmobilen måste man manuellt ställa om till vintertid. Suck.

Tyvärr var det en punka som var irreparabel (är det ett ord?), så köpte två nya sulor. Blev inte så farligt, 2100 inkl byte o så.

Två paket att hämta på posten. + att jag fick sms om ett paket på Shell (DHL utlämningsställe), det ger 3 paket! Samt M3 att läsa, blir nog långbad imorgon.

Så ikväll har jag sorterat cigarrer i lådor och bläddrat i lite böcker. Tyvärr var en bok skadad så den får åka tillbaka när jag fixat retursedel..
