This is a band I’ve wanted to talk about for quite some time, but I was never quite sure how to go about it. Stolen Babies is a band that comes straight out of left-field in terms of being original and outright strange.

I’m finding this band especially hard to classify in terms of genre. Stolen Babies is a unique blend of avant-garde, metal, goth, industrial, and last but not least progressive. With songs often featuring unusual instruments such as accordion, glockenspiel, ozark harp, baby sitar and marimba in addition to the usual guitar/drums/bass/keyboards. It’s a listening experience you won’t soon forget.

Lead singer Dominique Lenore Persi delivers an impressive number of vocal styles; from sweet pop, to cabaret inspired theatrics, to blistering black metal styled screams. While certainly not for everyone, I recommend you give their debut album There Be Squabbles Ahead a shot, you may even surprise yourself.

Below is Push Button off their debut album There Be Squabbles Ahead.

A South African Hospital is scrambling to find out how a two-week-old baby boy was snatched from a maternity ward without his nurses or security guards noticing.

The incident happened on Saturday night after visiting hours.

The missing baby was born on July 14 and his mother was discharged soon afterwards. When the new mom returned to collect him she fell ill ,was admitted and then fell into a coma shortly after .

Each room in the ward holds two or more infants sleeping in bassinets beside their mothers. The missing baby had been in a room with his mom along with one other baby.

Police say there were five- to 10-minute intervals between the times that nurses and security guards checked each room. Video surveillance is only positioned at the entrance of the hospital, not each ward.

Normally, stolen babies who have successfully made it out of the hospital only get returned when someone who knows the baby thief calls police.

Quite often they are women who have recently lost a baby or can’t conceive.

I hope that this baby is returned before his mother comes out of her coma. My heart goes out to this family.

Okay, okay, I promise I’ll lay off the Slow Runner talk for a bit after this. These guys are just so awesome, and made my life a little brighter by ending their tour with William Fitzsimmons and Caitlin Crosby here in Chicago at the House of Blues. I mean, whoa.

Last Saturday was Chicago’s kick-off to the holiday season, the lights festival & parade. Argh. For me this meant many more potential customers at the store and messed up public transit. Luckily my place of employment is within reasonable walking distance from the House of Blues, so I wasn’t too concerned. When I got off work (shortly after the parade started), I saw I had some texts from Josh, the drummer, asking if I wouldn’t mind doin’ my thing and working merch. Heck no! That’s what I do, son! So I scurried over to the HoB and meet up with the lovely fellas I haven’t seen in months.

After some chitchat in the restaurant, we headed backstage. There weren’t enough passes to go around, but we managed okay. The dressing room was adjourned to another that held at least some of the other bands playing the main stage (my boys were at the Back Porch stage). The main stage acts were Lizzie Borden, Stolen Babies, and LORDI. Um… can you say awesome? The band members had to pass through our room to get to the stage, and we had great fun watching these TOTAL GOTH guys running around looking like zombies in leather. And supposedly Lordi plays in some kind of armor? That would have been a treat to see. As it was, we were able to sneak onto the balcony and catch some of Stolen Babies’ set. Their lead singer is a chick who screams and plays accordion, and the bass player had a fake severed hand hanging from his mic stand. I couldn’t understand a word that was sung, but who cares? I got to see a bit of a band called Stolen Babies!

After some confusion about where merch was to be set up, the hostess found us a table off in the corner where no one could see us. I was concerned it was too out of the way, but as it turns out, I had to reason to fear. I laid out the t-shirts, posters, and three albums and got settled in for the night. I had two friends meeting me there, and they opted to sit closer to the stage, but I did switch off merching duties with one of the guys with Caitlin Crosby and Josh and chatted some with my friends Adam and Sam.

I unfortunately didn’t catch much of Caitlin’s set because the crowd was still settling and so was I. But her voice sounded fantastic, and the rest of the guys obviously thought she was something special. She seemed pretty perky, and no where near the irritation levels I get from the other female singer/songwriters from L.A. I meet. I’m looking forward to watching her career grow.

Then came my reason for living that night, my Slow Runner boys. Their guitarist Scott was back in Charleston diligently working to get his degree without futher delays, so William F. sat in for some rock. Otherwise they played as a trio. Adam turned to me right as they started and asked, “What’s one of your favorite songs by them?” At that moment SR broke into “Long Division” and I could reply like I was in a movie, “This one!” As far as the set goes, they played everything I wanted to hear except “You’re In Luck,” and that’s just fine. Loads of great energy, Michael was charming as ever, and the crowd REALLY enjoyed it. And you wanna know how I know the crowd REALLY enjoyed it? We sold more merch that night than any other stop on the tour! Go Chicago! And I love it when the staff from the venue comes over the buy CDs. Those poor people have to deal with so many awful bands and fans, and for them to fork over tip money to buy TWO CDs really says something.

My guyfriends seemed to take a shine to Jonny, the bass player. Most guys do. He’s a man’s man in the indie music world. I think it’s mainly got to do with the handlebar mustache that has become legendary in the Southeast. He’s also a married father of three who lugs a stand-up bass all over the country and seems to always have a bourbon and water at hand (and can manage to procure it even if the venue isn’t as forthcoming with providing it on the rider). Yep, buff.

Mr. Fitzsimmons is a very mellow singer/songwriter, and by the time his set started I was fading a little. I don’t have the stamina I used to. But I pushed forward and made it through. SR sat in for a few of his songs, and I kept grabbing the display copies of his album on the merch table and mentally checking off the songs I liked and which album they were off of. I decided I needed to get his album Goodnight first. Definitely something for the Iron & Wine/Jose Gonzalez crowd. He’s also got some distinctive facial hair (a beard of GREATNESS) and challenged Jonny to an applause-o-meter contest to see who had the better folical features. William won, but only by a little. I mean, he does have t-shirts with a drawing of his beard on them.

It was great to see my old friends again, hear them play, and discover some new bands to check out. (I also heard Josh give a solid endorsement for Duncan Sheik’s Phantom Moon album, so that’s been added to the list.) And just to top it all off, the boys gave me cab fare because we got out so late, so I got home quickly and safely. And thus my winter hibernation was put off a little bit longer.

Finalmente “The Button Has Been Pushed” concluye con este inesperado y bizarro carnaval.

So as many of you know, I don’t really ever listen to the radio. If I like a song, it’s usually one that’s been out for at least 6 months to a year, but it my mind it’s new! Well I’ve been listening to some music here lately that you should all check out if you get the chance. You’ve probably already heard most of it, but humor me.

Amy Winehouse- I didn’t think I’d like her, but I saw her performance at the Grammys and thought, “Wow, she’s not that bad! She’s actually pretty good!” And she looked absolutely terrified when she won a Grammy. It was pretty amazing. If you’ve never listened to her, check her out!

Stolen Babies- My friend recommended this band to me, and I liked it from the beginning. To me, it’s like Panic at the Disco meets Flyleaf. Check em out.

Arctic Monkeys- Weird, but good.

Panic at the Disco’s new song- Nine in the Afternoon. Go watch the video. It’s pretty great. I actually think I like it better than the old stuff. I LOVE the old stuff, but this new song is pretty awesome.

That’s all for today!
