Edy a binevoit a se prezenta la datorie in Albion. Iata povestea:

Edy e surprins cand i se cere sa declare ca nu are arme. In fine, ajungem la Catedrala St. Paul, unde urcam ‘jdemii de trepte pana in varf (va aduceti aminte filmuletul nostru?); dupa o scurta incursiune (la toaleta) sub catedrala, pornim iar la drum. Obiectivul? Bristol, in sfarsit! Edy isi ia in primire hotelul, apoi face o prima incursiune intr-un Tesco.

Stam in fata.

Apoi shopping. Cortina cade peste a treia zi.

Ziua 4 (Duminica): Marea evadare! “Ce i-as bate!”, remarca Edy. Observ ca pe camp sunt oi tunse. “Aici, chiar si oile stau in tricou.”, zice Edy. Bricheta? Nu, bre, pixul, uite cine are idei! Cortina.

Ziua 5 (Luni): Eu am patru ore de curs. Edy are panini si Fopp. Ne intoarcem, iar eu adorm in mod penibil. In centru, alegem sa mergem la Pizza Hut (deja va plictisim), unde desenam harti si dormim pe noi (adica eu). Un pic de shopping de final pentru Edy, o turta dulce de la romanca din Germania (“I want two of those…” “What? Doua?”

Ziua 6 (Marti): Treziti dis-de-dimineata, ne grabim spre gara. Cautam bilete, cautam pungi, cautam ursuleti. La 8, Edy trece de poarta. Pa pa, Edy! See you soon!

If you have not noticed yet, I have begun Tweeting daily about Solar Eclipse’s viewable from Stonehenge (providing there was clear sky at the time) I am working in a 5,000 year range from 1999BC to 3000AD and have found that on most days I have 3 to 5 eclipses dates to choose from both past and future. But Alas there are a very few days like yesterday November 23 when there never has and never will be an Eclipse occuring in the 5,000 year window. These eclipseless days are very rare indeed.

I spent the weekend visiting Salisbury with a friend. The trip wasn’t supposed to be quite so Salisb

I spent the weekend visiting Salisbury with a friend. The trip wasn’t supposed to be quite so Salisbury-centric, but the weather and the tail end of a cold put paid to our original plans to go walking each day; and in the end all we managed was a five mile excursion round the barrows near Stonehenge.

Stonehenge i’ll come back to: i’d like to start at the beginning with Salisbury Cathedral. I have never thought of myself as the kind of person who enjoys visiting churches – or great buildings of any kind. Architecture is something i prefer to enjoy without analysis and formal gardens generally leave me cold. If i’m honest it was mainly the thought that the Cathedral would be drier – and maybe a bit warmer – than the streets and the hope that it’d have a bookshop that made me suggest to D that we visit it.

On arrival though it was love at first sight. Truly. It was a response that startled me and began even before we entered inside. The Cathedral has… an atmosphere… an ambience… that special something you can’t put into words without gushing or sounding like a ‘psychic’. Was it the proportions? The impression of simplicity? The setting? I don’t know but it had me hooked.

Inside my mood faltered momentarily in the face of a coachload of rude French tourists but was soon restored by the beautiful stained glass windows: blue and red; the light coming through the dark grilles; and the old wooden carvings. I lit three candles to departed loved ones in a side chapel – how rarely i have the chance to do this these days; i watched the workings of the mediaeval clock and i felt strangely touched by the sight of the crumbling 13th and 14th Century tombs. These were the kind decorated with a figure of a knight, apparently asleep. Some of them had been severely damaged: one was missing his nose, another his sword. We wondered if this had occurred during the Dissolution or if it had been inflicted by puritans during the Civil War.

What i loved more than anything was that you could touch as well as look. The lack of (refusal to grant) this is what frustrates me about art museums. What is the point of sculpture you can’t touch? I remember going to the Tate Britain just because they had a sculpture by Henry Moore which i was crazy about. I was frustrated beyond words by the fact that, though i could walk round it and look at it from nearly every possible angle, i could never run my hands over the statue’s stone curves.

What a contrast with Salisbury Cathedral. There was a sculpture on display called the Thornflower*, the work of an artist called Charlotte Mayer. Viewed, this wasn’t anything particularly special to tell the truth, but touched it was a miracle: the abrasion of the thorns contrasting the smoothness of the leaves. Pain and Suffering, pleasure and comfort, beneath your fingers. Even D, who’s a much more practical type of person than me, was affected by it and we both agreed it was the standout experience of the visit.

On to Stonehenge, which we visited on the Saturday morning – the only time it stopped raining all weekend for more than a few minutes or so! With Stonehenge you’re back to an art museum type of experience – albeit in the open air. You can walk around the Stones, following a path that’s been laid out; but you can’t approach them and definitely can’t touch them. I can understand this: the henge is 5,000 years old and even the most recently arrived stones are 3,000 years old. Nobody’s going to build another one. Yet out of reach Stonehenge feels like an image of itself rather than the thing itself. Awestruck and disappointed all at the same time i took photo after photo, trying to make contact with it via the camera; then i went inside and bought books, postcards, even a fridge magnet. Still, i came away feeling that i hadn’t quite been there.

*”A bronze and steel sculpture which grew out of the artist’s reflections on the death of her grandmother in Treblinka and ‘man’s inhumanity to man at other times’” according to an article in Inspire magazine.

Oxford – “a bookish kind of place”

Oxford is a conservative, bookish kind of place where intellectual ideals are the common currency and pursuit of excellence the holy grail.

The Bodleian Library

Old Schools Quadrangle

Was will man mehr?…

Kulinarisches

The British Library – The world’s knowledge

The British Library - The world's knowledge

Neben den dauerhaften gibt es auch wechselnde Ausstellungen im Angebot, momentan zum Beispiel die beiden wirklich ansprechend konzipierten Points of View – Capturing the 19th Century in Photographs und In a Bloomsbury Square: T.S. Eliot the Publisher. ^^

Idea Stores – Library Learning Information

The Idea Store proposals are designed to draw all three themes together in a way that captures the best traditions of the library movement and the education sector but presents them in an exciting way, one that draws in new users and retains existing users. The Idea Stores will also be located in a different way – at the heart of our neighbourhood shopping centres, near or beside supermarkets wherever possible. We want a visit to the library and lifelong learning centres to become a regular part of people’s lives – to act as a focus as well as a resource for the whole community. The Idea Stores will engage people our current facilities don’t reach.

idea store ohne "library"

We arrived sometime in the after noon at London’s Heathrow airport on the second of October. We picked up our car and headed across town to find our accommodations. After settling in we set out on foot to explore the city. London is a great town with so much to see and do, and the metro system (The Tube) is easy to use, so easy if fact we left our car parked the entire time (3 days) we were in London. First stop was the Westminster area, which has the Parliament houses, Big Ben, the London Eye and tops on my list, Westminster Abbey. We visited this area several times both during the day and at night where the feel is distinctly different. The Abbey is spectacular, and we were able to catch a service there as well, in which the quire and organist played out an ominous tune reminiscent of a Halloween haunting. We also rode the London Eye (a big Farris wheel, once claimed to be the biggest in the world, now second to the Singapore Flier) to gain perspective on this city of over seven million people. We also visited other parts of the city like Buckingham Palace and Piccadilly Circus, a bustling shopping district with a carnival like vibe. We also paid a visit to the Tower of London and the famous Tower Bridge, to whet our appetite for many more castles to come.

Before we get to the castles part of England, we needed to drive south to see that funky pile of rocks called Stonehenge. The tour books belittle the arrangement of rocks as hardly worth seeing, due to its close proximity to major freeways. It is true that there are a juncture of roads converging on this sight, but major roads they are not. The English Heritage (a government conservatory) is so worried about the bad press, that they have plans of relocating the roads and tunneling around the site where necessary to protect the solitude of the site. Funny thing is that the roads are not that big (single lane each way) and not busy enough to warrant such drastic measures (If they do move them, hats off). The place by far exceeds the expectations painted by Lonely Planet, and that of our own, and falls in the must see category for those who have not been. While we were in the area we spent some time in Salisbury and took in the magnificent Salisbury Cathedral.

Much to my family’s dismay (and embarrassment), I am a huge Jane Austen fan, and that led us straight to Bath, England. Bath is the setting of several of her novels, and so vividly described within, that I needed to see for myself. We dedicated two days to the exploration of her town, including the famous bathhouses that date back to the Romans in 72ad (the Romans built these lavish bath houses as a gesture of kindness for taking over the country). The baths are still fed by a natural hot spring, and make for a great photo op. We also visited the Royal Crescent, Bath Abbey and walked the streets, alleys, and riverbanks to experience the fullness of this city. The Jane Austen House was however closed as we passed by on that rainy evening, leaving happy smiles on my children’s dampened faces. As a side note, I don’t like Shakespeare’s works, and so a trip to Stratford upon Avon would prove superfluous, but the castles of Wales were calling.

Ah the welsh and their Celtic charm. Our first stop in Wales was Cardiff, a wonderful seaside town with tons of stuff to explore. The hotel reception staff was a wonderful wealth of knowledge, and directed us to some fabulous sights. One of the little surprises in Cardiff was a small village of period buildings and houses, all painstakingly disassembled moved and reassembled to their original glory in this mock village of the ages. Each street represented a different time period in history. On site were blacksmiths, shopkeepers, a leather tannery, Pottery spinners and other rural village displays for a unique look back in time. Along side this village was a small Castle, a 17th century remake of an earlier fortification that once stood there. The gardens and ponds were spectacular but the castle structure was a little on the uninspiring side. Later on we

Found our way to the Cardiff Castle, which was absolutely fantastic. Walking the grounds, one gets the feeling of days gone past. Climbing the steep stone steps to the upper most reaches of the keep provides an unrivaled view of the surrounding city and the port, which made Cardiff worth fighting for.

We were still craving more castles and Wales has no shortage. For good measures we wandered thru in Tintern Abbey, before heading north to see Beaumaris Castle and Conwy Castle. Both of these were spectacular and in partial ruins, which made them all the more interesting to explore. We visited several other castles along the way and found our way to the shops in each of these little towns. It was only fair, if I got to see my castles and Abbeys, then the kids got to shop. Tristi and I always love walking the historic districts of these little (and some not so little) towns. There are always interesting little shops with equally interesting shop owners and other locals that make the experience special.

From the north of Wales we headed back into England proper. It was hard to pass up Liverpool (home to the Beatles), yet with such a tight schedule we needed to head straight to York. York is a picturesque medieval walled city that has a history spanning well over a thousand years. Our draw to this walled city was York Minster, the 900 plus year old masterpiece of stone and stained glass. It’s not just the Minster that makes this area so beautiful, but the setting in which it lies. The manicured lawns and gardens, towering trees turning a multitude of autumn colors, and the narrow cobbled alley ways lined with wonderful old buildings give this place it’s uniquely English character. During our time in York, we ventured outward to visit the Howard Castle with it’s outstanding gardens (the castle is set on over 13000 acres) and one of my favorites Fountains Abbey. This Abbey, which is in a state of partial ruins, is also set on nice acreage, with a river flowing thru a forested setting, with several lakes and numerous walking paths in and around the grounds. Within this ruinous structure, stands one of the tallest fortified towers ever built in an abbey type of setting. The tower however is proportionate to the massive structure that once housed the religious center, an incredible building in it’s own rights.

From the York area we headed north to Durham for a look at another great walled city. The Durham area offers several great castles, Warkworth and Alnwick, both worth paying a slow and easy visit to. The Alnwick castle, had a great area set up just for kids, where they could dress up in period costumes, do copper plate etchings, sword fight with evil Knights (really a kids interactive game with a wooden sword, that scored the number of kills) play chess on a life sized board, and even get beheaded by a guillotine (ah, the magic of mirrors). Further into the castle, there was a really creepy haunted castle, where you could get vertigo in the spinning bridge walk (very cool) and the house of mirrors maze where you can actually get lost. As you find your way out of the house of mirrors we were attacked by a fire-breathing dragon, which actually congratulates you for your bravery (of course the dragon has a wonderfully charming English voice) in making it out with your wits and your life. The kids had a wonderful time (big kids included) and then the castle tour begun. Unlike many of the castles we visited this castle was well preserved and lavishly appointed in proper English style. The entire experience at this castle was top notch and worth the heavy toll collected at the drawbridge.

Still further north we found ourselves in Newcastle upon Tyne (Yes, the birthplace of my favorite beer). Aside from the Beer, we came to see Hadrain’s wall. This is a wall separating the north (just south of Scotland) from the south (England). It spans from sea to sea and at one time had great fortifications built every 5 miles along the 73.5 miles wall. We drove about half of the wall and visited several of the ruins along the way. This fortification however was built long before the English Scottish battle. Who else, besides the Romans, could have built such massive fortifications that would last over two thousand years? Being a wall guy, I enjoyed the remains of once great work, as for the kids, rolling down grassy hills and chasing unsuspecting grazing sheep proved to be much more entertaining. If you are short on time, skip the wall and Newcastle for that matter (the brewery is no longer in Newcastle) as there is little other than a modest cathedral and a hand full of historic buildings to take in.

It was time to head north into Scotland, and visit the granddaddy of all castles, Edinburgh. This massive structure graces the rocky hilltop of the town by the same name. The castle had its beginnings over a thousand years ago, and has had many additions throughout the centuries. It is quite evident in some cases as the choice of stone and building styles reflect the period architecture and building techniques. This is not however so bad, as the castle is so large that it feels like a city and architectural variance in this setting perhaps even adds to it’s charm. No visit to the castle is complete without paying a visit to the crown jewels. Aside from Mary, Queen of Scots’ crown and some really cool swords, lies the royal coronation stone. This stone is used as a resting place for the bum of the to be crowned king or queen as they receive their honors. This stone has been used for nearly every crowning event in England’s 900+ year history of Kings and Queens. Edinburgh the city, and its lively Scottish heritage are not to be missed. A night on the town walking the shops, and a quick visit to a pub or two will give you a taste of the people that make Scotland so special, and truly different from it’s mother, England.

England, Scotland and Wales may technically be under the same rule, yet each is so very unique onto itself. The people, the culture and even the language tell you that these are three totally separate countries, but they are all subjects of the queen (well at least part of earlier conquests). Even more odd is the occupation of Northern Ireland and the longstanding issues this has posed. Sorry I digress, lets not review the Queens other real estate holdings around the world, instead lets get back to our journey. Ah yes, Ireland.

We flew into Belfast, Northern Ireland on the morning of the 16th (October). We took a quick spin around Belfast and then headed south into the heart of Ireland, Dublin. There are only 3 things Dublin is famous for, Guinness (my second favorite beer), Pubs serving Guinness, and Irish dancing. We only had two days to fit in all of the pubs and tour the Guinness factory, but somehow we managed. The tour was just OK but the fresh from the tap Guinness was the best I’ve ever had (it almost became number one). I wanted to be sure that it was not just the excitement of being in Dublin or being in the factory, so we set out across town to sample some other pints just to be sure. All of the pints sampled went down with ease, and the Irish music made them taste that much sweeter. The following morning we headed south to Kilkenny to visit the Kilkenny castle. It was hardly worth the time, so we headed to the pub for a pint. Just kidding, we waited to go to the pub until we reached Cork, several hours later. Tristi and I parked the kids at the hotel and headed out to see some Irish dancing at a great little pub just a short walk from where we were staying.

It is hard to describe the Irish pub experience when the dancing breaks out, yet dare I try. We are sitting at a small table in just about the center of the room, when the staff starts moving all of the tables and guests (mostly all locals) to either side of the room to make space for the dancing. The room fills with excitement as the crowd waits for the dancing to commence. Two gals and a guy come out and start a basic routine, with their tap shoes in perfect synchronization, the music keeping time and the patrons clapping to the beat. The dancing progresses with people joining in and the pub becomes fully charged with energy. There are cheers and laughter filling the last of the audible space in the room, and you find yourself somewhere swirling in the mix. Time is of no consequence in this four dimensional experience. It is something that only those who experience it, can fully relate. The following evening we wanted to take the kids so they could share in the experience. Nika and Noah still had ill memories of seeing the bar life in Santorini, Greece and opted to stay in again at the hotel and order up some more pay for view movies (yes the channels were on parental lock). It was a Sunday evening and the three of us headed out to find an Irish pub. It was not hard to find, as they are more common than gas stations, yet we must have looked in at least a dozen before finding just the right one. Sunday is live band night, so Irish dancing is not to be found. The band we saw was really good, and the crowd was not bad either, but it was missing the magic that Tristi and I enjoyed the night prior. I guess Sara will have to return some day to have the full Irish experience.

The following day we headed out to see Blarney castle. Earlier I mentioned three things that Dublin is famous for; if you expand this list to cover all of Ireland, then there are four. If you come to Ireland you must go to the top of the blarney castle, hang upside down and kiss the Blarney stone. Aside from the stone, the castle is set along side converging creeks and lush grounds. The intensely green moss covered rocks, stand sentinel around the castle, and disguise the entryway into the caves at the base. The castle proper is in partial ruins (just the way our family likes best), which tells the story of time itself, and allows imaginations to run wild. It is for this reason we relish the state of the castle. Our Ireland trip was short, but we take with us many great memories, especially the people, who’s celebration of life is visited frequently at O’ Connell’s Pub somewhere around five.

¿Qué llevó a aquellos hombres a acometer semejante empresa?

For the last week I have loved having my sister Sarah and friend Mel stay with me. We took to the road to see some of England’s best bits. First stop was Stonehenge. Surprisingly, the millions of photos we’d seen prior to taking in the real thing didn’t take away from the enjoyment of doing the “lap of honour”, as Sarah dubbed it, around the ancient stonesBath was next. Driving down the valley into the town is an amazing sight. The rows and rows of sandstone buildings are tall and impressive and the Circus and the Crescent are equally as impressive close up.

Battling wind and rain, we followed the M6 all the way up to the picturesque Lake District. We felt very welcomed by Cheryl when we arrived at the Backpackers lodge we stayed in. The next morning we found Dove Cottage in Grasmere, the home of William and Dorothy Wordsworth, and then later the home of Beatrix Potter, a short ferry ride across the lake from Windermere. Despite regular downpours, the scenery was beautiful, and we even managed a short walk among the golden trees and swollen river.

But probably the funniest moment of the trip was when we arrived at Lyme Park on the way back down south, hoping to see the Pemberly of the BBC version of Pride and Prejudice. It was just after 4 in the afternoon, and darkness was rapidly approaching. The gardens around Lyme hall had closed two hours earlier, but we were not to be deterred. Sarah climbed one of the fences to see how far away we were from the site of the scene in P&P. (On the hill, Lizzy running into Mr Darcy). By now the wind was howling, and rain beginning to pour. Sarah slipped over twice, covering herself in mud. She discovered that there was still another fence blocking her view of the estate. So we found the right spot to climb over the barbed-wire fence and sneak onto the grounds, hoping to avoid the embarrassment of being caught by the park ranger who was driving around in his van. We managed to get ourselves in a spot where we could view the lake and the hill and the back of the massive house. Worth it.

Back down south the next day and the sun was out as we went for a lovely winding Sunday drive through the country to the village of Shere, where The Holiday was filmed, and had lunch in the old pub, The White Horse. Very English.

The circle has been a powerful symbol for thousands of years and I thought that this would be an interesting art series. Religious and non religious people look at this shape every day, and yet few take in its power in history. The pharoah Akhenaton (Akhenaten) created a whole revolution at Tel-El- Amarna with worship of the Aton (Aten), or sun disk which was an aspect of the god Amen-Ra. In Judaism, and Islamic texts, there are stories about King Solomon and his seal (also said to be a sigil or signet ring) , and in Christian texts there is the story of Ezekiel seeing a vision of a wheel within in a wheel in the sky.

In the east, mandalas, yantras , and the bindu dot have been used for meditation, healing, protection, and spiritual guidance and the Yin Yang symbol is one of balance. Many of the early Gothic Churches in Europe are known this day for their elaborate circular stained glass windows, as well as the Celtic Cross. The legend of King Arthur and his knights of the round table is one that goes back to 1155 in poet Wace’s “Roman de Brut. King Arthur had the table built to prevent quarrels over sitting status. The fez headress of the Moors is circular on the top with a tassle in the middle that turns 360º which is a full complete circle.

Astronomical Calendars like Stonehenge ,the Mayan Wheel or even Native American Medicine wheels, are all more instances of a sacred circle. Cultures from the continent Africa to the Americas have used drums like the djembe, congo , and bongos to bring music for healing, celebration, and call to arms for battle.
In closing, there are far to many circular images for them to be ignored, like fllying saucers, shields, coins, plates, hoops, records, cd’s rings, and… ARE YOU GETTING TIRED YET??? My point is that the circle is a shape that never seems to go out of purpose. With that I hope you will take a look at my paper art wheels and remember the power of the circle and how it has been a part of your world.

More hitch-hiking stories, I’m afraid. Now that I’ve dragged up the ones that I’ve

More hitch-hiking stories, I’m afraid. Now that I’ve dragged up the ones that I’ve written about so far I’ve found a couple more memories have come back to me. One concerns an old friend, Niall, who is now a member of the space-rock band Hawkwind. We’d decided we wanted to head for Stonehenge and see if there was going to be a Solstice festival by the stones. The previous year had seen the Battle of the Beanfield, in which the police had broken up the revelry by smashing traveller’s coaches and pulling women out of vans by their hair, so the grapevine was uncertain what might happen the year we set off in the back of Niall’s dad’s van. (His dad, MO, took us some of the way but not all, if I remember rightly.)

We arrived a day late: I have always had trouble working out whether the Solstice falls on the dawn of the longest (or shortest) day of the year or whether it is the following dawn. Things must have been pretty quiet that year anyway as we encountered few fellow hitchers and no travellers. In nearby Salisbury we wanted to go and grab a coffee or a bite to eat somewhere but every single shop seemed to have the same, hand-written sign stuck on the door: ‘No Hippies!’ I managed to find a small shop which would sell us a couple of pasties and some drinks by making them laugh when I insisted I was not a hippy, I was a beatnik. While we were munching away we met two girls who thought we might find a small festival at the wood henge near Amesbury, only a couple of miles away. When we found the place it was deserted so we all ended up in a neighbouring field. The girls, sensibly, had a tent, which they pitched while we boys gathered wood and lit a fire. Niall and I had not thought to bring a tent, thinking we’d be able to crash in someone’s van at the big festival we never found. We did have sleeping bags though so we laid them out on the ground across from the girls tent and we all warmed ourselves by the fire.

And then the rain came. Quite heavily. The girls tent was far too small for four of us to have crammed in there so they found us some bin bags to put over the outside of our sleeping bags. And there we lay, Niall and I, with our heads stuffed under the sleeping and bin bags, praying the rain would ease off at some point so that we wouldn’t die of water on the brain. Then, in the middle of the night the sound of rain battering my flimsy, sodden bed stopped and I poked my head out to behold a glorious sight. The break in the clouds had formed a perfect circle and slap bang in the middle of the circle was the full moon. I wondered what the odds would be on such a phenomenon as I stared at it, transfixed, and finally feeling as though I’d found some Solstice magic.

On the other occasion that has sprung to mind, I was again travelling alone, heading for Sussex once more. I had been picked up by a decent guy and had been chatting for about forty miles or so but knew that when the motorway we were on connected to a different motorway (the M25 around London), he was going the opposite direction to the one I needed to go. I also knew that it is illegal to hitch on motorways but if I wanted to try and pick up one of the smaller roads it would mean a walk of several miles. It was already dark and I was not keen on the idea of the walk. So when the guy dropped me off I decided to use my cunning. I walked along the M25 until I found one of those telephones which, in pre-mobile phone days, were the only way of contacting breakdown services if you had car trouble. They asked me what the problem was and I told them a big fib: I said that I’d been dumped on the motorway by an angry driver and that I knew I shouldn’t be here because it was against the law. They put me through to the police who immediately wanted to know why the driver had been angry and dumped me there. Remembering a story a fellow hitch-hiker had once told me I said “He tried it on with me, you know, wanted to have sex with me. And I told him I wasn’t into that so he got angry and told me to get out of his car.”

The police said to stay where I was and they’d come and pick me up and drive me to a more suitable spot for hitching. By the time they arrived I was feeling really guitly about my lie. Not only were they now wasting police resources and time on a bullshitting hitcher, I felt bad about my last lift as he was, as I’ve said, a decent guy who I’m sure would never have dreamed of coming on to me. But soon enough I was in a nice warm cop car, chatting merrily away with the policeman who wasn’t doing the driving, and generally being treated so nicely that I let their kindness wash over me and help me overcome my guilt. They dropped me about thirty miles further down the road but there my luck ran out. Or perhaps karma decided that enough was enough and lying to policemen was a breach of the hitcher’s code. Whatever the reason, I failed to get another lift that night and ended up sleeping in a ditch. At least it didn’t rain that time as, again, I had no tent. Well you know what they say: ‘Lying hitch-hikers never prosper, they always end up covered in mud and cow shit from sleeping in ditches.’

What we now call Stonehenge stands on Salisbury Plain in Wiltshire at Latitude 51° 11′ North, Grid Reference SU 122 421 on the Ordnance Survey. Its site today is a triangle of 46.9 acres bounded on two sides by roads, the A303 and A344, and on the third by the Larkhill Track. It is owned by the state and administered by English Heritage, a government-funded agency. At this point we come, almost, to the end of the uncontested facts. This greatest of all British stone circles has been, for many centuries, a ruin, but a ruin of what exactly nobody knows.

I think they also did some sacrifices there, and would occasionally gather to play Bingo and attend to Shriner-like functions.”

Obama credits his extensive knowledge of ancient history and the Berlin Wall to multiple meetings with Jimmy Carter and Mikhael Gorbachev.

“Furthermore,” said Obama, “The Berlin Wall fell at the hands of George Washington, and his oft-quoted confession to his father – ‘I cannot tell a lie, Mr. Gorbachev, I tore down that wall.’”

Thousands of Germans in attendance, though perplexed by the President’s assertions, cheered wildly thanks to Obama’s masterful tone and cadence.

“What a great speaker he is,” said German citizen Helmut Ochs, “I remember when Kennedy came here. This guy makes John F. Kennedy look like Nipsy Russell.”

Kennedy is most famous among Germans for inadvertently referring to himself as a jelly doughnut when he misspoke an attempt to proclaim himself a “Berliner.” Kennedy’s gaff was all but forgotten today as President Obama continued to explain how the druids desperately awaited the destruction of the Berlin wall so that everyone could “drive through to the town of Humbolt in their Government-issued Pontiac Aztecs.”

Later, in a private chat with British Prime Minister Gordon Brown, Obama was asked why he left out the role of Ronald Reagan in the destruction of the Berlin Wall.

“Ronald Reagan?” Replied Obama, “Oh yeah. He’s the guy who left all those freaking jelly beans in the White House.”

“By the way, Gordon,” added Obama, “Did you know that the druids of the Berlin Wall used to sacrifice live ferrets in order to appease the gaping mouth of a young Ethel Merman? Most people don’t know that about Ethel. She had a career before that guest spot on The Love Boat, you know.”

Obama then began to sing his own rendition of Merman’s “Everything’s Coming Up Roses” for Prime Minister Brown, who smiled and clapped along with what onlookers described as a ‘starry’ look in his eyes.

This month marks the tenth year anniversary of my very first trip overseas. In 1998 I finished school and had just turned seventeen, so I decided to take a year off before starting Uni. I ended up working in Australia in a cafe for about nine months, then spending just under three months backpacking overseas. I went with Kitty, who I started dating in year ten in high school. We went to the UK, Ireland, Paris and Thailand.

Some of the things I remember from the trip were:

Wondering what the fuck we were doing after being grilled by British Immigration after a 30 hour journey over;

Being well and truly sick of seeing castles after navigating our way completely around England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales;

Thinking the Avebury stones were better than Stonehenge because you could actually touch them;

Freezing our buts off, everywhere we went; and never being able to manage a hot, or at least warm, shower in any hostel we stayed (says something about our budget);

Visiting my first ever Starbucks;

Thinking Glasgow was cool, even though people told us not to stay there;

Being admitted to hospital in Cork, Ireland for the first time in my life, with the worse case of food poisoning I will ever endure;

Deciding at the last minute to travel to Paris from London for our last day in Europe. We slept in the bus overnight on the way over and arrived at 3 am. We then left the same day at midnight and slept in the bus on the way back. The bus drove onto a ferry on the way over, and drove into a train (channel tunnel) on the way back;

Ireland using a different currency called a Punt, which no longer exists with the Euro;

Everything being so darn expensive, considering one dollar bought less than 40 pence and I just saved all my money working as a 17 year old in a cafe for $8 an hour;

Getting to Thailand at the end and actually having money left.

Good times.

We had to visit Stonehenge. It was in National Lampoon’s European Vacation after all.

Lonely bird

It was pretty cool but the Ring of Brodgar was better because you could get closer – the viewing distance lessened the experience a bit.

Flight

Brighton was an awesome city and one that I hope we can make it back to before we leave the country. The pebble beach was at least nicer than the concrete steps at Blackpool.

Pebbles

There was a good collection of unusual characters around too.

Come on Philip, let's hunt for TREASURE!

The best part of Brighton was the inner city. There is a lot of cool grafitti here including some stuff by Banksy (now under perspex).

Kissing coppers

There is also a lot of aerosol art around.

Catrabbit

We had a look at the toy museum which was pretty interesting, containing classic Sooty and Punch and Judy puppets.

No match for Punch

There was also a huge collection of model railway figures and toy soldiers.

Ten-shun!

The comical appearance of a sausage dog never ceases to amuse me.

Walk the line

Brighton had some great shopping too. Too bad that we have weight limits for our cases or I could go nuts.

We stayed at the Beddingham YHA which wasn’t much chop. It was probably the worst in being the most unfriendly and run down. We were only there for a few nights though.

After that we took a quick peek at the white cliffs of Dover, listened to some amusing old-man-speak in the local Wetherspoon and headed back to London.

They're white alright

Once we had returned our now filthy car we checked back into the hostel at Shepherd’s Bush and tried to figure out how we were going to get rid of the unfeasibly large amount of crap we had accumulated over six weeks.

Stonehenge

Foto: Flickr, Rob Gale
