HOW: Until the coming of Rock Band, I was literally ignorant of good music in general. Around early 2008, playing “Go with the Flow” caught my attention – the repetitive riffs, the chugging pace, the weirdly sweet voice of Josh Homme, and the lyrics themselves gave the song a twisted atmosphere that I never really heard before. I picked up Songs for the Deaf a couple months later, but I really hated the album for about six months. I tried to listen to it, but I just didn’t “get it” at all. The album just switches genres at the top of a hat; there’s no real consistency at all other than these quirky radio interludes.

However, one day it just clicked. Listening to it as a whole was a thrilling experience through all the ups and downs of the songs, and it just works, even though in the back of my mind there was a feeling that this roller coaster should just fly off the tracks, but it doesn’t. Every song is catchy, and even the more abrasive songs (like “Six Shooter” with Oliveri’s screaming) are the kind you grow to love. That’s what happened to me, at least – it was a slow churn, for sure, but I subsequently bought all the albums I could buy and download all the B-sides I could find (the first Queens albums, also, since it’s out of print at the moment). I’ve been listening to them constantly ever since.

WHY: Homme is willing to try anything within the context of “rock” music. He has described it as “robot rock” (especially the first album, and probably even more so Songs for the Deaf), but later albums show a ton of variety. Lullabies evokes the feeling of a dark Brothers Grimm fairytale, while Era Vulgaris goes into the dark underbelly of Hollywood. The dark, dank, dirty, grimy atmosphere of the music really pulled through to me; they really are mood albums, especially played straight through in order (that makes a playlist especially difficult). On top of that, the chops on display are marvelous; you can totally tell these guys really love to play whatever they play, and this passion pours through on their albums. It’s always interesting to hear what kind of flourishes will pop out, as well as a random new instrument or two from guest contributors. The ever-changing lineup means that one never knows what the Queens actually will sound like, honestly. They even switch vocalists on songs from time to time. Most of all, all of their songs are catchy. They stick in your head forever, and they don’t go out, and when you want to get them out, you end up listening to another song. That, for me, is the sign of a great band.

SONGS: I basically chose songs I felt represented what I would call the three different “moods”  of the Queens. Firstly, there’s the chugging “robot rock,” extremely riff based, straightforward and damn catchy rock music. There’s some popular stuff in there (I can’t leave out “Go with the Flow,” really) but there’s also some personal favorites as well (I like “Sick, Sick, Sick,” and “Regular John” has that nice intro riff that pops up later in the song which I love). Secondly, the middle of the playlist hits around the “acoustic” side of the Queens. It’s not that it doesn’t involve any electronic equipment, but that it has that laid back vibe to it even though it still classifies as “rock.” Thirdly, the last part is what I would call the “totally weird” Queens songs. They tend to be crazy, complex, long, and generally some of the best songs they have ever put out. “I Think I Lost My Headache” is Homme’s personal favorite, so it seemed a logical choice to close the playlist. I’ll let the rest of the songs speak for themselves.

Almost didn’t make it to this gig, but after a last minute change of heart, a three hour train journey and 20 minutes trying to get through hundreds of police in the city centre, we got there! I’m really glad we got to see this concert.

Unfortunately we missed the first support band, Lions, and arrived when Karma to Burn were already on stage (don’t think they’d been on long, though). I wasn’t sure what they would be like live since all of their songs are instrumental and I’m not too familiar with them, but they played a tight set and I thought they were really good.

When Monster Magnet first took to the stage, I must admit I was a little shocked by Dave Wyndorf’s appearance and he did seem a little out of it in parts of the set, but you cannot fault that man’s voice! His voice is seriously amazing live and the set as a whole was exceptional. I liked how dramatic he was when he was singing. I knew about half of the songs they played but they are the kind of band that you can enjoy live whether you know the songs well or not. Highlights of the night for me were all the songs played from Powertrip, particularly the title track and ‘Space Lord’; ‘Negasonic Teenage Warhead’; ‘Zodiac Lung’; and when Dave lapsed into ‘American Pie’ during ‘Spine of God’. The band were on top form and it was a highly enjoyable night!

About the static, I couldn’t help it, my mic is kinda screwed up. But, I like how it turned out, I messed around with it and now I feel like it sounds a little like rain, hence the title. As for the little treat at the end, well that’s just a reminder that, as melodious as the song may be, in the end it’s just noise. Just like as much meaning as we try inject into our existence, in the end we’re all just vibrations.

Cough son unos muchachos de Richmond-Virginia (USA), que tienen muchas ganas de destrozar tu mente, a base de ritmos sucios, hiper-pesados y crudos. Temas como Lyssavirus o el que abre el disco, Killing fields. Son una buena muestra de ello. Un potencial atronador en cada una de sus canciones que no bajan de los seis minutos y otras superan los diez. Una magnífica y genial mezcla del stoner más árido, con el doom más oscuro y el sludge más actual y directo. Psicodélico  y desgarrador. Un album muy recomendable.

Que tal curtir um Stoner Rock vindo diretamente de Goiânia? O som do Black Drawing Chalks é tão vigoroso que nem parece ser uma banda brasileira. Não querendo dizer que o Brasil não produza coisas legais, mas com a estética proposta por esta banda eu não conheço outra pelo país.
A banda abriu recentemente para o Eagles of Death Metal, banda das mais conhecidas do gênero, e dizem que o show foi muito foderoso!

Them Crooked Vultures is a Megawatt supergroup of hard rock collaboration composed of Joshua Homme (Queens of the Stone Age, Kyuss, Eagles of Death Metal) on guitars, Dave Grohl (Nirvana, Foo Fighters,Probot) on drums and John Paul Jones (Led Zeppelin) on bass.[NME reported in July 2009 that the trio were recording in Los Angeles. The collaboration was first publicly mooted by Grohl in a 2005 interview with Mojo, in which he declared “The next project that I’m trying to initiate involves me on drums, Josh Homme on guitar, and John Paul Jones playing bass. That’s the next album. That wouldn’t suck.”

Of the nascent project, Homme’s wife Brody Dalle commented in July 2009 that “I’m not at liberty to talk about it… but I think is pretty fucking amazing. Just beats and sounds like you’ve never heard before.”

TCV, played their first live show on Aug 9, 2009 at a Lollapalooza aftershow at the metro club in chicago. According to the Chicago Sun-Times’ Jim DeRogatis, the band played all original material during its 80-minute set; song titles include “Interlude w/Ludes”, “Caligulove”, and “Scumbag Blues”. The self titled debut album of Them Crooked Vultures will be released on November 17.

Nowy Orlean – miasto położone w południowo – wschodniej części stanu Luizjana, w delcie rzeki Missisipi, nad Zatoką Meksykańską. Ostatnim czasem znane jest przede wszystkim z powodu huraganu Katrina, który w 2005 roku nawiedził kolebkę amerykańskiego jazzu, jak zwykło się o tym mieście mawiać. Dlaczego o tym wspominam? Przyczyna jest bardzo prosta – Down to kapela pięciu facetów, którzy wychowali się na przedmieściach Nowego Orleanu i koloryt tego miasta mają we krwi. Nic więc dziwnego, że pierwszy krążek formacji Down zatytułowany „NOLA” w mojej głowie dokonał spustoszenia, które porównać można by było tylko z cyklonem o sile rażenia Katriny.

Historia zespołu sięga początku lat 90′. Pomysłodawcą całego przedsięwzięcia był Phil Anselmo. Do współpracy zaprosił kilku swoich dobrych znajomych, którzy podobnie jak on sam nie stronili od alkoholu i miłości do mocnych, sabbathowych riffów. Wokalista Pantery zawsze miał nosa do pobocznych projektów, można więc było się spodziewać – kolejnego znakomitego, przemyślanego w każdym calu, a za razem żywiołowego albumu. Przemyślany debiut? Tak, tak o sile tego projektu stanowiły osoby znane z znakomitej reputacji. Mam tu na myśli gitarzystę Corrosion of Conformity Pepper Keenan, a także jego kolega po fachu z Crowbar – Kirk Windstein. Brzmienie debiutanckiej płyty „NOLA” to tak jakby wypadkowa tych dwóch formacji. Z jednej strony, słychać stoner rockową psychodeliczną, gitara Keenana, którą raz za razem stara się zagłuszyć sludge metalowy, potężny ton instrumentu Windsteina. Miejscami daje o sobie znać także bluesowa specyfika Nowego Orleanu – „Eyes Of The South”,czy miniaturka „Pray For The Locust”. Niemniej jednak – „NOLA” to przede wszystkim skarbnica siarczystych riffów („Lifer”, „Hail The Leaf”), które porażają już za pierwszym razem.

Kilka słów należy się również sekcji rytmicznej w której skład wchodzili panowie – Todd Strange i Jimmy Bower (obaj Crowbar). Bez zbędnego wydumania, nieskomplikowana, choć bardzo sugestywna, posiadająca swój urok, ale i nadająca odpowiedniej magii gitarą. Gra obu to także wizytówka tego wydawnictwa. Zaskoczeniem i to całkiem sporym, może być kawałek „Jail” – senna atmosfera, psychodeliczny pogłos gitarowy. Skojarzenia? Black Sabbath i utwór – „ Planet Caravan”. Kolejne nagranie „Losing All” zaczyna się od soczystego wykopu gitarowego, rodzi się w chaosie i w chaosie zamiera po drodze kojąc nasze uszy wybornym solem gitarowym. Koniec płyty przynosi jeszcze jeden ważny utwór – „Bury Me In Smoke”. Hipnotyzująca pełne emocji wokale Anselmo, monotonna, niemal pogrzebowa praca sekcji rytmicznej, wreszcie solówka, w której to gitary Keenan i Windstein coraz to bardziej żarliwiej sposób lamentują.

Jedyny minus tego wydawnictwa to nazbyt duża ilość wokaliz Anselmo, choć po dłuższym okresie obcowania z „NOLA” wszystko w ładny sposób się zazębia. Doskonała płyta – album w który trzeba się „wgryźć” z cała mocą, który odkrywać można przez kilka kolejnych dni i to na wiele sposobów. Muzyka, która działa z przeogromną siła – niczym huragan. Muzyczny odpowiednik Katrinny.

Minha primeira recomendação é de uma banda relativamente nova  na cena nacional, já que começou a se destacar somente esse ano. O Black Drawing Chalks é de Goiânia e existe desde 2005 ,seus integrantes são: Denis de Castro no baixo, Victor Rocha- vocal e guitarra, Douglas Castro-bateria e Renato Cunha na guitarra e backing vocal. 

A banda faz um som com cara de velho, com muita influênica de rock setentista: uso de guitarras distorcidas, bateria marcante, baixo  dançante e vocal frenético, tudo combinado com elementos de psicodelia,vistos na aparência dos trabalhos do grupo e na própria vestimenta dos músicos.  As letras das canções são em inglês e a maioria fala de bebidas e mulheres, algo que pode se encaixar no lema “sexo,drogas e rock’n'roll”.

Além da temática hard rock dos anos setenta, é perceptível a influência de bandas mais novas que fazem o chamado stoner rock, como: Queens of the Stone Age, Nebula, Eagles of Death Metal, Fu Manchu entre outras. A cena de stoner no Brasil não é grande, na mesma linha seguem as bandas MQN e Big Bang Babies, também de Goiânia. Essa intitulada  Goiânia Rock city, berço de diversos grupos que vêm se destacando mais no país. Assim como Brasília foi considerada a capital do rock nos anos 80, Goiânia passa por um período fértil da música. 

O quarteto já está em seu segundo álbum, chamado “Life is a big holiday for us” com faixas despretensiosas e enérgicas . O sucesso de público e crítica do Black Drawing Chalks se dá, justamente, pela simplicidade e a volta nas raízes do rock. 

Em meio a artistas que fazem uma música moderna e cada vez mais ligada ao eletrônico, o BDC optou por  usar a tecnologia para o retrocesso; para o resgate das canções simples e fortes. Em contraposição ao som, o nome Black Drawing Chalks (um de tipo de carvão de desenho) surgiu  ainda na faculdade de Design que os irmãos Douglas e Denis cursavam. O integrantes possuem um estúdio gráfico, onde produzem toda parte visual do grupo.

Recentemente, a banda concorreu em dois prêmios no VMB,o de aposta Mtv e o de rock alternativo. Além de excursionar por todo país, a boa fama do conjunto ultrapassa o território brasileiro, eles já tocaram em alguns festivais pela Europa e América do Norte, ganhando o título de  “Brazil’s Best Loud Music Export”.

Apesar da música do Black Drawing Chalks não lembrar o Brasil, vale a pena conferir o som da banda, por transmitir uma boa energia e empolgação, típicos dos brasileiros.

Upon settling on the name Clutch in Au¬gust 1991, the band cranked out its debut 7-inch, Pitchfork, that October. Based on the strength of that recording, as well as 1992’s Passive Restraints EP, East West offered the band a deal. JoomlaPraise Clutch delivered Transnational Speedway League a year later, which fea¬tured highlights like “A Shogun Named Mar¬cus” and “El Jefe Speaks,” and introduced Clutch as one of the premiere groove-heavy alternative bands in post-grunge hard rock.

“We wanted Transnational to sound like the Melvins. So we went to Jonathan Burnside at the Razor’s Edge Recording in San Francisco, where they’d done a lot of records. But I got burned out at that session pretty quickly and we came back to New York for a second session. That’s when I figured out how to keep going, at least lyrically speaking. I discovered that I could just make stuff up and tell a story. With one album under their belt. Clutch were more confident when they entered Silver Spring, Maryland’s Uncle Punchy Studios in December 1994 to record their self-titled sophomore album. Clutch’s songwriting was also more self-assured

and reflected the band members’ recent rediscovery of the classic rock that inspired their youth. free joomla Corona template Tracks like the build-and-release jam “Spacegrass” and riff-tastic “Big News II” helped Clutch to become the band’s best-selling album to date, as well as what is widely considered to be one of the high points of ’90s stoner rock.

Home Improvements [1994] <- Download

Formado em 1992 pelo guitarrista Otis “O” Bartholomeu e o baixista Josh Higgins — ex-membros do Olivelawn —, o Fluf é fruto da diversificada cena de San Diego do início dos anos 90. Home Improvements, de 1994, é o segundo dos cinco álbuns do grupo, sucedendo a estréia Mangravy. A afeição pelo Hüsker Dü é óbvia nas melhores faixas, começando pela abertura Sticky Bun. Assinalam-se também tendências mais troglodíticas, que colocam o Fluf em sintonia com o stoner rock, então em gestação. Não por acaso, o baterista do Olivelawn, Eddie Glass, na mesma época assumia a guitarra do Fu Manchu — que mais tarde abandonaria para dar à luz o Nebula.

Aus dem Biologie-Unterricht wissen wir, dass Säugetiere meist keine Eier legen – außer dem Schnabeltier und Kloakentier. Wenn wir die Tierwelt für einen Moment vergessen und uns stattdessen in der Musikwelt umsehen, gibt es nur eine Band die ein Ei legt  – „Wolfmother”. Sie haben letzten Freitag (23.10.) ihr zweites Album, das „Cosmic Egg“, „gelegt“.

Schon seit einer Woche sticht einem der Bandname „Wolfmother“ immer wieder ins Auge/Ohr, vor allem wenn man zu den MTV-Zusehern zählt. MTV All Access – Wolfmother war die letzten Tage angesagt. Mein Freund ist bekennender Fan der australischen Ausnahmeband und das seit seinem Auslandssemester in Down Under. Während seines Party- und Urlaubsstudiums in Sydney wurde er auf die Band aufmerksam und konnte sie zwei Mal sogar live auf der Bühne erleben. Den ersten Longplayer der australischen Band nahm er natürlich und konnte es kaum erwarten bis die zweite CD von „Wolfmother“ endlich releast wird. Er war somit wohl einer der ersten, die sich gleich am Freitag „Cosmic Egg“ geholt haben. Seitdem wird bei uns in der WG keine andere CD mehr gespielt.

Die im Jahr 2000 in Sydney gegründete  Rockband überzeugt mich auf diesem Album vor allem mit ihrem neuen Sound –  „Der Leadsound ist kreischend, die Basslines schwer und verzerrt, der hohe, nasale Gesang von Stockdale ist jetzt viel häufiger mehrstimmig.“, so wird der neue „Wolfmothersound“ bei Amazon vom User JimmyIommi beschrieben. Insgesamt sind 12 Tracks auf dem zweiten Album der Rockband zu finden – „In the Morning“ zählt für mich zu den schönsten Songs auf der neuen CD. Bei YouTube habe ich sogar eine beeindruckende Unplugged-Version des Tracks gefunden:

Nach dem enormen Erfolg in ihrem Heimatland Australien sind „Wolfmother“ drauf und dran, die restlichen sechs Kontinente der Welt mit feinstem Rock zu erobern. Leider kommen sie im Rahmen ihrer Europatour 2010 zwar nicht nach Österreich, aber nach Deutschland – ein Konzert der australischen Wölfe darf man also auf keinen Fall verpassen!
