Imagine Sesame Street meets Gary Burton/Mothers of The Invention/Kool and The Gang throwing a block party. The Monty Stark Reality was beyond an experience, an experiment in sound and free expression. As a kid, I vaguely remember the reruns that aired sporadically, capturing the essence of free thought, free expression and funk. The musicianship was beyond stellar..

In the late 90’s, I was very fortunate to find an original double lp on one of the Monty Stark releases. The title escapes me.. its NOT a reissue..fair conditon .

Thank you for your amazing body of work and the promotion of free thought Mr Stark. Your work and contributions will be forever cherished. Rest Well..

Dam-Funk’s 5-LP set “Toeachizown” is now available for pre-order and will be shipping no later than the first Monday of 2010. Are you familiar with the name Mayer Hawthorne?

I first saw the name popping up on on a fellow blogger with exquisite taste www.on-point.be already a few months ago.

After a quick research I found out that Mayer Hawthorne is pretty much amazing.

When you listen to his debut album ‘A Strange Arrangement’ released by the Stones Throw label you might expect everything but a white nerdy singer with big goggles.

If you’re into Motown vibes,  70’s soul, some Barry White from time to time and Curtis Mayfield, you might really like Mayer.

Like. Réally.

Old Soul with that New Sound.

(Or for the real music lovers:  Holland-Dozier-Holland and Smokey Robinson are some of Mayers’ many major influences.)

Mayer Hawthorne is man (At least that’s what they say when a man hits 30) with roots in Detroit that can proudly state that he wrote, produced and played every instrument in his  album himself….

He might look like your nerdy neighbour in math class, but do not be mistaken, this man is a loyal J Dilla fan and all over hiphop lover and even spins records under his DJ alias Haircut.

Apparently he is still a little underground, because I really thought that he was already a ‘known’ artist but I came across a lot of people who actually never heard of him.

So if all of the above, still does not make any bells ring, I suggest you watch this:

Needless to say, when he was booked to play in Ghents Make-Up Club, ‘Miss Thang’ was going to be present.

The moment we arrived at the club Jules and I started working. Very quickly we noticed a familiar staff member face going in and out of the club.

We went straight to the man and asked if he could help us to get backstage since we never did a concert in Make Up and we had no clue where the backstage was.

After brief consideration he took us outside, to enter a dark doorway a couple of meters of the Make-Up Club entrance.

He told us to wait, while he was getting the manager. Wow. Smooth like butter.

After 3 minutes he came back, accompanied by a charming fella that was supposed to be Mayer’s manager, Jackson.

(For some reason, my brain misunderstood that part, and I ended up calling him Michael the entire night, way to go!!)

Again, with a trembling voice I explained the concept of my blog and showed him the former artists on my I-Touch.

While explaining I noticed Mayer passing us by…

Professional as we are, both me and Jules completely ignored him and focused on the manager.

(This was not the time to react all “OW THAT’S MAYER HAWTHORNE, HELLOOWWW”)

“So, interrupt me, if I’m wrong, but basically, your stories get more interesting, the more harder the artist is to reach…?” Jackson asked me.

Fuck. I should have kept my mouth shut about how hard to get Method Man and Rahzel were at the time.

“Uhm,” I replied with caution, “that might be correct, but things don’t have to be difficult àll the time right…..?”

Sometimes, a girl deserves things going smoothly!

“Well, maybe you should come back àfter the concert and then we will see…ok?”  He smiled and went back into the backstage area.

Did we just digg or own grave…?

When we went back to the club, we had a good feeling about our chances, but then again, you never know….

And then, it was time for Mayer Hawthorne & The County. (The County is his band)

I’m really glad I saw Mayer Hawthorne in the deep dark raw underground basement of the Make-Up Club than a regular concert venue.

For some reason, the surroundings were perfect for his vibe and I really enjoyed his concert and there was à lot of Mayer love in the Make – Up club.

Get it. Love/Make-up?  Cheesy… I know, I know.

My ultimate favorite was ‘Green Eyed Love’, I just lòve that song, it’s simple, sexy and you understand the aching pain in it.

I’m completely addicted to the Classixx Remix that takes me right into an old 70’s disco in Ibiza where everybody is dancing in slow motion.

But that’s just me.

The audiences love for Mayer was official when Mayer got some  pink pantyhose handed over to him.

He kindly accepted this pink little gift and gave it a well deserved place on stage:

After the concert, we waited 15 minutes, since asking for pictures right àfter a concert will mostly turn out in to a big NJET.

I noticed Jackson behind a Mayer merchandise booth with a pile of A Strange Arrangement records and Mayer t-shirts and when he noticed me,

he nodded and asked me to wait a couple of minutes.

After 5 more minutes he guided us back backstage and quickly briefed Mayer and his band members.

After his official “Its Ok, you can go in now” it was showtime…..!

We went in the backstage, introduced ourselves and shook hands with Mayer and his band.

While I immediately focused on Mayer, Jules got acquainted with The County.

So, ladies and gentleman, let me introduce you to the lovely members of…

As usual, I explained Mayer my project and went through my former artists with him while he was relaxed and sipping on some well deserved Hennessy.

Pic-tionary Quiz!!  I love it when I got that brief and much wanted attention from the artist.

When we were done looking at the pictures, (He had a preference for the Pharrell one) I asked him if I could take a picture of him aswell….

The moment he said “YES” it was time for me to WORK.

I immediately checked the backstage area for a clean wall and again, that was too much to ask.

A small black area, a golden door with a poster a white wall with ugly writing all over it and that was it.

I suggested to take one with The County on the white wall, but Mayer wasn’t really feeling that one and suggest the black wall.

This is not the time for the carefull remark that a black wall with mostly black silhouettes is not a very good idea, so I agreed.

(Although Black on Black gives very bad Polaroid results…)

I started to moe around little black sofas, a couple of backpacks, a table and huge travel bags.

They all looked at me, like I completely lost my mind and said: “Waw…you are creating a set and all….”

I smiled and replied: “After taking pictures of SA-RA in the smallest backstage room from HELL, I tend to redecorate, if I have the chance.”

So, after 5 minutes of redecorating I placed the band with Mayer in a nice order and was ready for the first picture:

After that was done, I ripped a poster off a nice golden wall and placed Mayer before it.

He already envisioned how his Polaroid was going to look like, which explains the banana and said: “Count me off, ok!”

For the second picture, I asked him (since his album and songs and his videos are mostly about love) to give me the famous heart sign with his fingers.

He frowned and responded with concern: “I’m not really sure If I want to do that,…, I’m not so into Love and Hearts.”

I wasn’t really expecting that answer since I’ve seen numerous press pictures with hearts on tiles, his “Just Ain’t Gonna Work Out” song is pressed on a heart shaped record , but maybe he got sick of the love image and clearly decided he wasn’t gonna push that button anymore.

“Okay then, no problem, do whatever you want to do then.” I replied.

“I will give you my jerk pose, since most of the times I’m a jerk really.” he told me very seriously.

Ok then.

You know we’re into details, so for my sneaker freaks I can confirm that Mayer is sporting Jordans (Nr 3)

We ended the night smoking a doobie, discussing Kim Clijsters ,Henin and Belgium tennis with Joe (he was a trained tennisteacher) and said our goodbyes.

I thanked Jackson again for his cooperation and kindness and we left the club while DJ Haircut was spinning his final tunes.

For the ones that did not know Mayer Hawthorne & The County, I truly hope this introduction got you triggered since I am sure, you will be hearing from them sooner than later. (I heard through the grapevine that a Snoop Dogg and Mayer collaboration is a done deal….)

This Q&A features the production half of the duo,
DJ Rhettmatic.

“Get It Up” • Download

∆: How did you and Buff1 meet?

“Basically, I met Buff thru the guys from Now On. They’re all from Ann Arbor, Michigan and ironically, they’re also from the Athletic Mic League. Now On moved to LA a few years ago and I would start running into them at a couple of events and whatnot. Buff would come out to LA and they would introduce him to me and that’s how we met.”

∆: When and under what circumstances
did the idea of Crown Royale form?

“Well, the idea of Buff and myself of working together came from the 2/3 of Now On: Jackson Perry and Dj Haircut aka Mayer Hawthorne. Around that time, Buff just dropped his 1st solo album and they were asking him what’s his next move. And at that same time I was starting to branch off doing production outside of my other group, The Visionaries.

A lot of people knew me more as Battle Dj/Turntablist and not for my production, though I have been doing some production for quite sometime. I actually gave a beat cd to Now On to do some work. Next thing I knew, Jackson and Haircut came up to me and said ‘we would like you to do an album with Buff’. I believe they did the same thing with Buff. He said ‘if I like the beats, I’ll do it’. He already got an in house production team with the Lab Techs: 14KT, Haircut, Vaughn T, etc… so he was spoiled. And those guys got slaps. I knew it was a go when he sent me the first song recorded and done. Luckily he liked my beats, LOL.”

∆: How early was “Get It Up” done?

“Late last year, and that was actually the first song. He recorded the vocals
first in Michigan, then we redid it when he came back to LA.”

∆: How did you guys come up with the name?

“It’s actually a funny story. At the time, we didn’t have a name for the project or group. During that same time, Magestik Legend, another dope MC/Producer from Detroit, wanted to do a group project with Buff. On Buff’s 1st album,
Buff would always wear a crown so Magestik wanted to name the group
‘Crown Royale’. Ironically, I was brainstorming myself with names and all
and I also came up with the name Crown Royale, and literally called Buff
the week after Magestik shot him the idea. And I didnt know that Magestik
hit him up for the idea. I was a fan of Magestik’s work but I never met him in
person, so it was crazy when Buff told me what Magestik approached him with.

Then later on, like 2 months later, Magestik goes to LA. We all met up at Fat Beats LA and during an instore Buff introduced me to Magestik. I really wanted to name the project or group Crown Royale, so we all had a pow wow with Magestik. By the grace of God (and us doing a lot convincing), Magestik was kind enough to let us use the name and in return, we have him on our album. And that’s how the name Crown Royale came about.”

∆: Wooow, lol. Being that Crown Royale is a duo,
what is one of your favorite hip-hop duos and why?

“Mine is GangStarr…..Buff’s is Outkast. But also, I love EPMD, Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince, Run-DMC, Low Profile… I don’t know, we can go on forever. You would have to also ask Buff that question, but i do know his favorite group is Outkast.”

∆: What’s a particular reason you can say about GangStarr?

“It’s easy. The DJ and the MC combo, Guru and Preemo. They’re a perfect example of a classic hip-hop group. Preemo is one of my fav top producers, as well as a DJ.”

∆: What are some artists and songs you’ve produced
that the masses need to be aware of?

“Hmmmmm…….. let’s see….. Divine Styler ‘Triple Irons’ (WordPower 2), Aceyalone ‘Keep Rappin Keep Spinnin’, Aloe Blacc ‘Find A Way’ (B Ball Zombie War comp – Stones Throw)… I’m trying to think… RBX ‘Stop That’. Pigeon John ‘Freaks Freaks’. A lot of stuff are like b-sides and album cuts, I wouldnt say obscure but you would have to know the artists. But I worked with alot of cats that people know. I have alot of stuff that hasnt come out officially yet or it’s in the vault. Let me see…Trek Life ‘All Times’ (Price I’ve Paid)”

∆: Did you produce “E=MC5″ (Key Kool & Rhettmatic
feat. LMNO, Ras Kass, Meen Green & Vooodu)?

“Yeah, that was my 1st official record.”

∆: That was my shxt.

“Word? Thanks. I did that on the SP1200.”

∆: Word. From producing songs for artists to producing a full album,
what is your approach? In particular, your approach for producing a full album.

“Hmmm…that’s a good question. In terms of producing an album, I would try my best to make the album flow from beginning to end. Make it interesting like a good mixtape. Try to make it have sometype of continuity. I would put it together like i was putting a mix routine together. It has to make sense. And in terms of the beats, it varies. When i give a beat to an artist, I either would have an idea or concept or I would just let the artist dictate what he or she wants to write, whatever emotion the beat elicits from that artist. And when it comes to adding scratches, I either ask the artist whats the title or the concept of the song, and I would go base it off of that idea. Unless the artist have something in mind, then that makes it a lil bit easier.

Btw… all you rappers out there that think it’s easy to put a scratch hook together… no, it isn’t. That takes time. Diggin for records, listening to records, writing down phrases, then working on putting it together, then tryin to record the scratches until we get it right. Djs/producers are very meticulous. Just like for emcees that want to get the best take and their best rhymes out there. Us dj/producers are the same, for the most part. I just wanted to add that….LOL.”

∆: Word! What’s on the horizon from DJ Rhettmatic?

“Hmmmmm…..It seems I got alot on my plate now. Well, of course,
the Crown Royale debut album on Myx Music Label in early 2010.
I also have another project that I do with Eric Bobo of Cypress Hill.
It’s a DJ/Percussion combo. I actually finished an ep with Frank Nitty
(Frank N Dank). I’m doing a producers’ album with J-Rawls
of Lone Catalysts. I got a 10″ single that I did with MED
that The Do-Over is putting out in 2010.”

∆: When you say a “producer’s album”, what do you mean?

“J-Rawls and myself will be doing production together and we will be having artists on the album rocking over the instrumentals that we produced. We already have a song with Trek Life & Kam Moye aka Supastition, Renee Neufville from Zhane.”

∆: Damn, dope.

“Yeah, it’s been an off and on project. We recorded already 5 songs,
we just haven’t had the time to work on it. And of course my work with
the Beat Junkies. Beat Junkie Radio, our NIGHTLIFE events… and maybe, one day, a group album (which we’ve been saying for the last 10 years….LMAO!). Mix cds…etc.”

Yessir.  You heard me right.  East Coast legends Omar Credle and Andre the Giant, better known as O.C. & A.G. have gone ahead and finally put this classic D.I.T.C. what if? scenario to bed and are slated to release THE OASIS November 24th on Nature Sounds (home of Masta Killa, the Ghost & DOOM project, and oodles more).

If this tune is any indication of how the album’ll turn out, I’m there.  I swear to you, neither of them have even come close to losing a step and believe me when I say A.G. keeps getting better and better and better…(See his guest appearance on Dabrye’s Two/Three)

A.G. & O.C. – THE OASIS

As I reported a couple months ago, Stones Throw frontliners Madlib & Guilty Simpson will be teaming up to release the highly anticipated O.J. Simpson record either last quarter ‘09 or first quarter ‘10.  Madlib, who has cemented the fact that he has one of the best batting averages for beats ever, matched with Guilty, who’s punchline onslaught can only be compared to an E. Honda attack, will undoubtedly result in something so raw it would be O.D.B. approved. Don’t believe me?  Check the freebee.  GOOD GAWD I love these guys.

The Madlib Medicine Show will be a combination of Madlib’s new hip-hop productions, remixes, beat tapes, and jazz, as well as mixtapes of funk, soul, Brazilian, psych, jazz and other undefined forms of music from the Beat Konducta’s 4-ton stack of vinyl.

Madlib has crafted a sinister, fuzzy beat for Detroit’s Guilty Simpson to rap over, part of The Madlib Medicine Show, “a once-a-month, twelve-CD, six-LP series” he’ll be releasing for Stones Throw.

So for those of you that don’t know I am pretty much obsessed with Madlib and DOOM. If you check my ipod I have hundreds of songs by them. You can throw J Dilla  into that group as well. When Madlib and DOOM came together a couple years a back for their album MADVILLAINY I can’t tell you how gassed I was. It is one of the best albums I will ever hear in my entire life. Naturally, you expect for the duo to drop another album because of its critical acclaim and audience approval. We have gone a couple years without hearing anything from the new album. Now we may have come a cross a sneak peek of what is to come soon. I don’t know if these are demos or actual tracks on Madvillainy 2 but they do come from J-Rocc who is a part of the Stones Throw camp.
