In honor of Country Music Month, we asked a panel of country music experts from across the country”what is the best country song you’ve ever heard?” This installment is from Stoney Richards. Stoney is a career country music dj, who can be heard on Y108 in Pittsburgh. Here now, is the best country song Stoney has ever heard.

After 25 years plus in country music, it’s hard to pick my favorite country song since there are so many, but that was the question wasn’t it?

Surely, Tammy Wynette’s “Stand By Your Man” and George Jones’ “He Stopped Loving Her Today” and Garth Brooks’ “The Dance” are legitimate contenders, but country is simply feelings put to song. You don’t have be a great singer, a gifted player or a fabulous performer.

That being said, my favorite country song happens to come from an era years ago yet, it was recorded less than a year ago by a man who is everything country music is to me.

The song is called, “That’s Why I Write Songs” by Jamey Johnson. It just came out on his album, The Guitar Song, but I’ve been aware of it since I heard a rough studio track of it.

It’s gritty, truthful and full of pain. You may not hear it on the radio but that’s what makes it so pure. As a song it says, “I don’t give a damn what you think, this is what I feel.” That’s why I write songs.
