Okay, so I’m a student in college.  The school term is almost over.  This means that everything thing is winding down and homework is piling up.  With all of the papers and projects due on top of all of the studying for finals, I like to zone out for a bit and listen to some music.  Today’s anthem is a classic.  Some my call it cheesy, but I think it’s the ultimate motivator… I never skip this song when my iPod’s on shuffle.  No matter what mood, the song makes me feel good.  I guess that’s because I associate it with sooo many good times I’ve had in the past while this song was playing.  All I know is, I love this song.

The first time I watched this video I couldn’t stop laughing. Something about the accent and the entire setup, followed by the “BRILLIANT!” after drenching the kids… I can’t get enough.

Nineteen year-old Jorge Steven Mercado dreamed about working in the fashion industry. He was also a volunteer in organizations advocating for HIV prevention and gay rights. But, last week his body was found dismembered, decapitated, and partially burned, in a rural area in Guavate, Cayey, Puerto Rico. Activists from the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) community in Puerto Rico immediately described this brutal slaying  as a hate crime. Not a single crime has been processed under the Puerto Rican Hate Crime Law since it was approved in 2002. Penalties are higher if the Hate Crime Law is applied.

Days after the murder, 26 year-old Juan Martínez Matos confessed. According to local news reports, Martínez Matos said he went looking for a prostitute in the streets of Caguas, Puerto Rico, when Steven approached him. Martínez Matos said he “didn’t know” Steven Mercado was a man until they arrived at his apartment in an another town (the victim was allegedly dressed as a woman). Gay activists Ada Conde and Pedro Julio Serrano have publicly stated that the sector where Steven Mercado was picked up is mostly frequented by transsexual and transvestite men. Martínez Matos said he killed Steven in “self defense” after they got into a fight. He then mutilated his body, and left it in a desolated area miles away from his house. Martínez Matos also stated he hated homosexuals because he had been raped when he was in jail for committing domestic violence.

Gay activists were outraged when the police officer in charge of the investigation said: “Someone like that, who does those kind of things, and goes out in public, knows full well that this might happen to him.” They have demanded the officer’s immediate removal from the case. Martínez Matos has been charged with murder and bail was set at $4 million USD.

Since Puerto Rico is a United States territory, federal laws apply. Two Puerto Rican United States Congress Members from New York have asked for this crime to be prosecuted under new federal hate crimes laws. The Federal Investigations Bureau (FBI) is monitoring the investigation. In the 1980s the serial murderer Ángel Colón Maldonado, known as the “Angel of the Bachelors”, killed 27 homosexuals in the Island. Recently, gay actvists have also warned about another murder against a gay man in San Juan, the country’s capital.

Bloggers have reacted to this terrible crime. The human rights actvists and spokesperson of the LGBT organization Puerto Rico para Tod@s (Puerto Rico for Everyone), Pedro Julio Serrano [ES], condemned the religious leaders’ and the politicians’ silence:

We are before one of the most horrendous murders committed in the history of this country, therefore the silence of political and religious leaders is even more shameful. They should feel embarrassed for not expressing their solidarity with Jorge Steven’s family and friends. They should feel embarrassed for not expressing solidarity with the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community for the hatred that this crime has produced. They should feel embarrassed for not condemning the police officer in charge of the investigation. They should feel embarrassed for having forgotten their constitutional duty of defending equality for every human being.

This Sunday there will be a vigil in New York City in remembrance of Jorge Steven Mercado.

Oamenii, in lumea in care traim, nu mai sunt catalogati prin ceea ce fac ci prin ceea ce par sa faca sau prin ceea ce fac cei din anturajul lor. Questa pistola è una Frommer Stop 39M.  Sarà l’arma utilizzata dal cattivo nel prossimo romanzo degli italiens.

La Frommer Stop è una pistola a lungo rinculo di fabbricazione ungherese costruita dalla Fémáru, Fegyver és Gépgyár (FÉG) [Fabbrica  di Metalli, Armi e Macchinari] a Budapest.
È stata disegnata da Rudolf Frommer il cui progetto originario è stato adottato come Pisztoly 12M nel 1912 dall’Honvédség, le Forze Armate ungheresi.
Dal 1912 al 1945 sono stati costruiti vari modelli di questa pistola. La Stop è lunga 165 mm con canna da 95 mm a 4 solchi. Scarica pesa 610 gr e il caricatori tiene 7 pallottole.
Il predecessore della pistola Stop era camerato per il calibro 7,65 mm (.32 ACP) con una velocità di uscita di 280 metri al secondo. Frommer ridisegnò la pistola nel 1919 seguendo un progetto più convenzionale. Questo nuovo modello fu prodotto fino al 1939 e nominato Pisztoly 19M. Venne adottato come arma corta ufficiale dalle Forze Armate ungheresi.
L’ultima variante della Stop, la Pisztoly 39M (l’arma che ho descritto nel romanzo) fu prodotta in calibro 9 mm Kurz (.380 ACP), ma non venne mai utilizzata come arma di ordinanza.
È un’arma che mi ha sempre incuriosito sia per la forma vagamente da fumetto, sembra la pistola di Tintin, dice il commissario Mordenti, sia per il funzionamento più simile a quello di un fucile da caccia che non di una comune pistola semi automatica.

The Frommer Stop is a Hungarian long-recoil pistol manufactured by Fémáru, Fegyver és Gépgyár (FÉG) [Metalware, Weapons and Machine Factory] in Budapest.
It was designed by Rudolf Frommer, and its original design was adopted as the Pisztoly 12M in 1912, created for the Honvédség (the Hungarian Armed Forces).
The handgun was manufactured in various forms from 1912-1945 and used in the Hungarian Armed Forces. The Stop is 165 millimeters (6.5 in) long with a 95 millimeters (3.7 in) 4-groove barrel. Unloaded weight is 610 grams (21.5 oz) the detachable box magazine holds 7 rounds.

This is a weapon I was always curious about, not only because of the comic aspect, it looks like Tintin’s gun, says commissioner Mordenti, but even for the way it works, most similar to that of a shotgun than that of a semi-auto pistol.

I’ve had this theory about The Fantastic Mr. Fox ever since it popped on to IMDB.  If stop motion animation didn’t work for Wes Anderson nothing would.

Since the Royal Tenenbaums, or even before,  Anderson has surrounded himself with actors, crew, and writers that love him like the benevolent micro managing dictator of a South American island. And because no one is saying No to him anymore, Anderson’s quirks and flaws have magnified to the point of eclipsing the movie itself. Wes Anderson had become a style rather than a filmmaker. I told anyone who would listen 3 years ago, that I didn’t know why Wes hadn’t just made all of the Life Aquatic animated. It would have been his best movie to date.  So after waiting for The Dajeeling Limited to come in a lil red envelope, I thought Mr. Fox might be worth the $12.50.

Now right off, an aside in movie etiquette. The wife and I entered the freshly swept and now popcorn free theater, behind maybe eight people waiting at the door before us. We like the stadium seating first row  with the clear view and the railing to put our feet up and easy access to the exit for when my invitable bathroom break. So naturally when we turn to our right and start to go down the row we were not expecting to be met with a demure little peasent clothed gatekeeper who promptly told us.

Bitch: Um actually I was trying to save those seats.
Me: The whole row?
Bitch: Actually Im trying to save both these rows for my friends.

Both. Rows. 12 seats. 12.

I’m willing and prone myself to saving a seat or two, but it takes some nutsack hairier then her petulie stankin legs, to just claim up and claim the primest 2 rows in the theater like it was a Risk board and her armies were a scarf and her hippy communal sense of World Peace.  The only thing that kept me from lowering a dumptruck worth of attitude, plopping down, and setting the rest of the row on fire was the fact that the row across from us was still mostly available and I don’t like to hit girls unless they hit me first.

The rest of her water and vinegar compadres wouldn’t begin arriving for another 20 minutes in a stressfully packed room and I did take an elevated level of satisfaction watching her fend off every third movie goer from taking the seats she reserved for her ascot and designer baseball hat wearing amigos.

By the way, this also goes for all you cocksocks that love getting in line for big movies (the Harry Potters and Twilights of the world) and letting all your giggly sorority sisters trickle in ahead of me so that the line, that had 5 people when I got here 45 minutes early, suddenly bubbles up like a stepped on garden hose to about 17-18 tards. If I see this at Avatar, I will pee on you.

That being said, when I came out of the theater I couldn’t have been happier. I was right; the genre worked like a charm for him. His quirks and nostalgia, instead of seeming over done, read like attention to craft. The normally wooden deadpan performances became whimsical and charming behind the smiles and wide eyes of animals in clothes.

Adding a new first and third act onto the story seemed surprisingly natural to the Dahl story.  The heist film resetting felt especially comfortable in the voice of Danny Ocean himself, George Clooney. (BTW saw Men Who Stare At Goats last week.  Wow what a waste of time.  Nothing happens.  And not in a good existential way. It’s a waste of actors, waste of decent subject matter and worst of all: a waste of Jeff Bridges.)

What at surface seems like, and is heavily promoted as, children’s faire, Mr. Fox harkens back to the Bluth and Watership Down 70’s that weren’t scrubbed to bubbly Disney perfection.

I know Wes Anderson will probably go immediately back to making live action movies that I have no interest of watching until they stream on Netflix, but I hope that he’s at enjoyed the process enough to continue to push the Wes Anderson style into new paradigms.

Cause who doesn’t love paradigms.

During his recent visit to China, President Obama spent 30 minutes after his official business was concluded touring China’s most well-known attraction, the Great Wall. 30 minutes isn’t that much time to spend on the Great Wall: it was built almost five hundred years before Christ and stretches on for roughly 6,000 miles. It is visible from the moon and from a low Earth orbit, reputedly the only man-made object to claim such distinction.

China welcomes President Obama.

President Obama’s Great Wall tour is understandable, and since it isn’t something anybody can see without travelling to China, it’s perfectly reasonable that most visits to China, Presidential or otherwise, include a stop along it. The opportunity is just too much to pass up.

Media-hounds may recall that, weeks ago, President Obama also toured an historic American destination: Arlington National Cemetary. In remembrance of Veterans’ Day, President Obama silently toured the graves of America’s fallen service-men and -women, thinking and paying his respects. For 15 minutes.

President Obama spent half as much time touring the graves of fallen American soldiers, on a day set aside in their honor while we are again engaged in violent military conflict, than he did touring the Great Wall of China. Most likely, extenuating circumstances dictated the time alotted to each tour: scheduling constraints, travel arrangements, etc. Surely, there were reasons for the disparity in times.

And yet, the fact remains.

Rispondendo ad alcuni cronisti sull’eventuale riferimento alla candidatura come Alto rappresentante di Massimo D’Alema, che diversi politici del Ppe provenienti dai paesi dell’Est avversano come ex comunista, Daul ha precisato che si tratta di criteri relativi alle audizioni dei membri della Commissione europea, e non alle nomine che spettano ai capi di Stato e di governo, e ha aggiunto: “Non faremo una caccia alle streghe; io ho partecipato alle manifestazioni del maggio 1968, e questo non mi ha impedito di essere eletto capogruppo del Ppe.

Ma se il ‘caveat’ del Ppe non è un ostacolo per l’eventuale nomina di D’Alema da parte dei capi di Stato e di governo, è comunque un avvertimento su quel che lo attenderebbe nell’audizione davanti alla commissione Esteri dell’Europarlamento.

Uno dei candidati commissari nel mirino di almeno una parte degli eurodeputati del Ppe è sicuramente il ceco Stefan Fuele, attuale ministro per gli Affari europei, che è stato membro del Partito comunista prima del 1989 e ha studiato all’Istituto di Stato per le Relazioni internazionali di Mosca, tempio dell’elite politica sovietica.

Décidément, parler de voitures, de high tech et de femmes en maillot de bain ne réussit plus à la presse écrite. Après le cultissime King Mag, c’est au tour du pilier français des magazines masculins, FHM, de mettre la clé sous la petite porte après 10 ans de présence en kiosques.

Et pour finir en beauté (ou pour limiter les dépenses une dernière fois, c’est selon), le mag propose en supplément un calendrier de leur complice de toujours, l’ancienne hardeuse Clara Morgane. D’ailleurs, peut être que s’ils avaient songé à mettre un peu moins de Clara Morgane partout et un peu plus d’autres meufs sexy, les recettes publicitaires et les ventes se seraient maintenues.

En tout cas, leur dernier édito est assez juste et drôle, malgré l’oubli que Krstv s’est empressé de corriger. Ah, et il a aussi oublié de dire que Lomig Guillo ne pourra plus apparaître dans les 50min Inside ou autre Accès Privé en tant qu’Expert des Françaises Préférées des Français. Comme quoi, tous les jobs de rêve ont une fin.
