There have been a number of cool advances in my gym routine over the past year, and they all revolve around the iPhone.

The iPhone itself is an incredible gym tool on its own, because it comes with a built-in iPod, stopwatch, and basic timer.

Add in the awesome power of the App Store and the plethora of gym-specific Apps that you can install, most of which are free, and you have yerself a very powerful tool to make your workouts more efficient and intelligent.

In fact, I have a few ideas for an iPhone gym/workout application that I need to start working on. It would be tailored to the way I like to work in the gym, but if you use any of the techniques I’ll talk about on this blog, it’ll work for you too.

But I digress. What I want to focus on here is the ability of the iPhone (and select other smartphones) to access and edit Google Spreadsheets, part of the Google Documents suite of webapps. This is a relatively recent development and not too many people know about it, but it dramatically increases the power of the iPhone as your workout’s data center.

I plan and track my workouts using Google Spreadsheets. You can take a look at my own, personal workout planner here. The breakthrough here is when you use the iPhone to actively edit and notate your workouts – I often update it after each individual set.

For someone like me who tends to forget my rep count by the time I get to the water fountain, this is a godsend.

Try it on your own smartphone and tell me this isn’t a killer new way to plan and track your workouts.

my father was one of the lucky fifty-five thousand to watch the beatles perform at shea stadium. which also made him one of the fifty-five thousand at shea stadium that day to attend the concert and not hear a single note or lyric above the screams, shrieks and yells. and although it would be more than a decade until i would be born, way too late to have a beatles concert of my own ruined for inclusion on an already incredible list of social disappointments – yes, i am referring to the time gene simmons thought it prudent to voluntarily shake my hand, only to subsequently tell me how unimpressive i was – i can finally empathize with my father, sitting here at a starbucks in marina del rey, revolver spilling from the speakers and being completely ruined by a loud, large (both physically and numerically) austrian family trying to get a head count on caramel macchiatos. okay, that was a horrible and ridiculous comparison. still…

below is the “cinematic trailer” for the beatles’ rock band game. a friend had sent this to me a few months back when i had only barely begun justifying my lack of imposium time as a summer hiatus. i had sent this around to a bunch of friends at the time, probably more than the eight or nine people who still read these posts, but as the actual game has finally made its way into my apartment, courtesy of my friend mark, and the remasters remain an inevitable-and-eventual-but-hopefully-discounted purchase, courtesy of my friend matthew (imposium reader six of eight or nine), i figured now to be as good a time as any to post it.

the trailer represents the first fantastic two-and-a-half minutes of content you’ll see once you put the game in, press power and wait for your way-too-loud xbox to load. these are also the two-and-a-half minutes you’ll impatiently enjoy before you race into the song menu to discover that there are too many songs missing and it’s going to take some work to find them. and since you’re not an avid video game player and you would much rather watch your third, identical half-hour of ESPNews than turn on a machine that sounds like it’s moments away from exploding to work your way towards bonus songs after an eleven or twelve hour work day, well, you’re pretty much stuck with the songs you’ve got. which is still okay. i mean, really, these are the beatles…and there will be a cheat code. enjoy:

a delayed thanks to acacia for the heads up, kudos to pete candeland (who is also the artist behind the great gorrilaz) for the animation and a special mention to the music of the beatles for, at the very least, reminding us all of how far we’ve come since the days of starbucks’ speakers lulling us into caffeine want by flooding our ears with iron and wine. yawn. even thinking. yawn. about that. yawn. band makes me want to take a na….

I like to know what time it is. When I’m running, I especially like to know what time it is so

I like to know what time it is. When I’m running, I especially like to know what time it is so that I can fend off boredom by playing a “guess-how-long-it’s-been-since-the-last-time-I-checked-the-time” game. Kidding, I love running. I really like to have a watch so that others can ask me what time it is and I can feel like a hero when I tell them.

I was using my boyfriend’s old watch which was about 2000 times too big. So big that it didn’t even fit around my wrist, so I had to just hold it in my hand. This became a problem because when holding the watch, I didn’t have any room to hold Twizzlers or any other candy that I was running with. I got tired of choosing between time and candy, so I headed to Target to buy a watch of my very own.

Being the ultra-cheap person that I am, I walked around the jewelry section at my local Target searching for the lowest priced watch. Quickly, I found this Timex 1440 for only $14.99. I made sure that the watch fit my list of requirements:

Fits my wrist – check

Cheapest watch available -check

With my requirements fulfilled, I grabbed the watch, headed to the check out counter and went home to try it out.

What can I say? The watch works. It has a stopwatch, it has a backlight, it tells me what day of the week it is, it’s blue (but comes in other colors) and it can swim! -that is, it is waterproof, so it comes with me when I swim laps.

I got excited when someone in my running group had this same watch. It’s the small things, I guess. People buy this watch because they trust Timex, and I would like to give them credit for consistently making a quality product that is affordable.

Now, if only Timex could go into the car making business…

Or - Higher-Order High-Resolution Timer for the Masses Timing code is so common that many timers exi

Or -

Higher-Order High-Resolution Timer for the Masses

Timing code is so common that many timers exist in the .Net Framework. One can resort to simplistic timing via <del>
Environment.TickCount
</del>
DateTime.Now
, but this is a low-resolution timer that does not accurately reflect the current tick count and is therefore not usable for precision timing. As this[1] MSDN article shows, its resolution is actually 10 ms for modern versions of Windows (NT 3.5 or later).

Also see this[2] article about three timing tactics for .Net.

(System.Diagnostics.) Stopwatch
to the rescue. This class is a simple stopwatch that is easy to use. However even this class can be repetitive to use many times. The way to make this even easier is to create a higher-order function. I wanted to create such a function but figured it would be nice to include in my extension method library on codeplex.

The problem is that dispatching off an action is not nice (not even the latest C# 4.0 mitigates this). So I created a new enum type Timer that reflects two units of measure – ticks and milliseconds. Now an extension method can dispatch over this type and measure time for a delegate. This is how the code is used (work is an Action that performs the work to be timed)

var ms = Timer.ms.Time(() => work());

I dare you to simplify this. See code on extensia[3] on codeplex.

If C# worked a little more like I’d like it to, it’d be possible to write something like this, using extension methods

var ms = Work.Time();

Maybe C# 5.0.

The latest improvement here, is a method to show (via
(System.Diagnostics.) Trace
, which can be fed into the Console via a listener) the timing information in a nicely formatted way – it allows you to write this

Timer.µs.Show(() => Test(), "test");
Timer.Ticks.Show(() => Test(), "test");

The first line displays the measurements in whole microseconds, the seond one in the unit closest to the order of magnitude below or equal to one second. This eases formatting quite a bit. The output of a Ticks measurement looks like

test() finished in 235025 ticks (100 ms)

As you can see the appropriate unit (milliseconds) is chosen. This number is calculated based on Stopwatch.Frequency which defines the resolution of the underlying timer.

Notice the that the special character “µ”, which is a nice cherry on the top for this interface. I have also begun using the greek alpha, beta and gamma symbols for parametric type names to make them stand out more (although these symbols are also be useful for math variables, so it’s not a clear cut case on their usability for this purpose).

2009/10/10: updated the post with a correction and a couple of references: it is not Environment.TickCount that is (necessarily) imprecise (relatively speaking), it is DateTime.Now. However Stopwatch is the best approach to timing precisely since it exposes the timing frequency and whether the timer is actually high-precision as a boolean property (Environment does not appear to expose frequency information) and it is supposedly the highest-precision timer in the .Net Framework (BCL).

Previously, I’ve shared with you an article “Convert Firefox into FasterFox” and now I’m taking that one step further and now I’m going to share with you free tool to speed up your Firefox.

Mozilla Firefox is by far the best feature-rich and fastest browser out there, but with the passage of time it slows down considerably. It will take a lot of time to load during startup, the overall speed will be effected, and browsing Histories will be too slow. This is very common problem and it occurs largely because of fragmentation of databases.

SpeedyFox is a brand new small utility that fixes this problem with a single click! It seems unbelievable but after you optimize your Firefox with this tool, you will get a fresh newly-installed feel because the speed indeed gets considerably faster. You will get up 3 times faster startup speed, browsing history will become faster, and performing operations with cookies will be quicker than before.

How does it work?

Firefox uses SQLITE databases to store lots of its settings. By the time the databases grow and Firefox starts working slowly. SpeedyFox compacts those databases without loosing any data.

Features :-

Boost Firefox startup in up to 3 times!

Speed-up browsing history

Quicker operation with cookies

Tutorial:-

Once installed, SpeedyFox automatically detects your Firefox’s default profile. If you have more than one profile, you can select the one you want to optimize from the drop-down menu. All you have to do is select the default profile that you want to optimize and hit Speed Up Firefox button.

The optimization process can take anywhere from 5 minutes to an hour depending on how large your databases are. The whole optimization process is safe as it does not effect your history, bookmarks, passwords, etc.

How to tell whether Firefox is faster after optimizing it:-

1. Clear the cache of Firefox from the Firefox settings dialog – this is very important!

2. Before you optimize Firefox, navigate to http://www.numion.com/stopwatch/ and do a speed test on http://www.mozilla.org/productsl/firefox/

3. The time needed to load the site completely will be displayed to you in the browser window. Write down the time

4. Clear the cache of Firefox from the Firefox settings dialog again – this is very important!

5. Now, close Firefox, and optimize it with SpeedyFox

6. Start Firefox again, and repeat the speed test on http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/

7. Compare the displayed result with the result from the test before the optimization.

SpeedyFox has significantly improved several factors that must be taken into account, however the results in most cases are satisfactory, you just check this out and feel the difference in speed of firefox. Download now!

i’d really love to write something witty to introduce this video, but it’s part childrens toy, part musical, part movie that still kinda of gives me the creeps more than eighteen years after erick gerber and i snuck into the preakness movie theater to see it and there’s really not much i can say that the actual clip wouldn’t say better. so i’ll simply say that if nerds rope was a youtube clip and also a toy and could sing with the cheeseball splendor of an off-broadway musical, it would be the following:

by the way, this is the only silence-of-the-lambs-related anything that even remotely rivals the dominator’s jame gumb impression, although this clip – unlike the dominator’s impression – does not require you to ask it whether or not it recalls a fredrica bimmel.

thanks to lexi for the video.

and happy friday!

the last arts-and-crafts-style project i did (that was not stickering the portapotties at bonnaroo)

the last arts-and-crafts-style project i did (that was not stickering the portapotties at bonnaroo) revolved around a non-stick, poly-vinyl coated beach mat to keep your, um, beach towel sand-free during your ocean-side travels. i did this throughout the first semester of my junior year of college. this was, admittedly, an awful idea, despite the fact that said beach mat’s ykk zipper-lining enabled it to double as a beach bag and the bean-bag-weighted corners kept your towel or blanket from blowing away. for the record, i never actually thought this was a good idea or that it’s utility had much merit in the realm of sh*t-people-pay-for, but the prospect of doing a semester-long business plan for an invented product with the son of a turkish chromite tycoon and a chilean futbol jersey enthusiast/collector left myself and chris with way too much work to worry about the fact that we’d be pitching a product that the skymall publishers would undoubtedly scoff at. with that said…

this is bang-yao liu’s senior project for savannah college of art and design. that he used royksopp’s “eple” as the music bed of this video suggests that he and i have similarly stellar taste in music. the actual video suggests that his last collegiate arts-and-crafts-style project may be slightly more mind-blowing than mine.

to quote sean maloney (who was actually talking about raphael saadiq’s bonnaroo set and not this video when he wrote the following): “holy sh*tf*ckmuthaf*ckas!”

i cannot fully explain what this has done for my day. i could spend the rest of the day trying to explain the concept of twitter to my grandmother and this would still be one of the most fulfilling days i’ve had in some time. the residual disgust left from the homeless wine (alcoholic miscellany) and cheese (ninety-five-percent smoked and stomped out cigarette butts) party taking place outside my apartment this morning has all but dissipated and i am pretty confident that i now have the ability to fly. minus that last part.

this is the video for chairlift’s single “bruises” which i’m being told has been featured in an itunes or ipod or imac commercial and features a lot of televisions and what appears to be a pretty f*cking cute lead singer when she manages to not remind me of dazed and confused’s insatiable nose-toucher, mitch kramer. yes, this mitch kramer.

Do you give your students timed tasks? Do you use a kitchen timer, sand hourglass, stopwatch, or the classroom clock to mark the time? Last year a colleague of mine turned me on to www.online-stopwatch.com. The students are actually able to watch the countdown as it happens on the SMART Board™ and better pace themselves. Teachers can choose from several versions including a digital clock, analog clock, egg timer, bomb, or split lap timer. I use this site for giving math fact timed tests or oral reading fluency timed assessments. It is also useful for counting down to the end of group work or setting time limits for transitions between tasks.

ALAT UKUR BESARAN

Alat Ukur Besaran Pokok

a. Panjang ( Mistar, Jangka Sorong & Mikrometer Sekrup)

b. Massa ( Neraca )

c. Waktu ( Stopwatch, Arloji )

d. Kuat Arus Listrik ( Amperemeter )

e. Jumlah Zat ( Pengukuran Tdk Langsung)

f. Intensitas Cahaya ( Lightmeter )

1. ALAT UKUR PANJANG DAN KETELITIANNYA

a. Mistar

Alat Ukur Besaran Turunan

Speedometer : mengukur kelajuan

Dinamometer : mengukur besarnya gaya.

Higrometer : mengukur kelembaban udara.

Ohm meter : mengukur tahanan ( hambatan ) listrik

Volt meter : mengukur tegangan listrik.

AVOmeter : mengukur kuat arus, tegangan dan hambatan listrik

Barometer : mengukur tekanan udara luar.

Hidrometer : mengukur berat jenis larutan.

Manometer : mengukur tekanan udara tertutup.

Kalorimeter : mengukur besarnya kalor jenis zat.

Everybody needs a stopwatch at some point. The funny thing is there’s never one around!

Then you start searching on the internet or downloading a program. Then it messes up your computer and you loose a lot of time and the only thing you’ll get is frustration. Been there, done that

So, here is another Genius Shortcut in case you need a simple, fast online stopwatch or an online countdown timer, then Online Stopwatch is for you! It does not come any easier than this one…

How does it work?

Stopwatch

1. Imagine you choose for the stopwatch. So, click the green arrow.
2. Press Start when you are ready.
3. Press Pause when you are ready. That’s it!

Countdown

1. Imagine you choose for the countdown. So, click the red arrow.
2. Set the time you want and click the green Set-buton.
3. Press Start and the timer will count down till zero. That’s it!

Of course, there are a few extra options, like changing the language, a pause button, full screen view, split-timer, etc. And there several extra tools like an egg countdown, clock countdown and your custom countdown. That’s probably all you need for an Online Stopwatch or Countdown, right?

Three rounds for time:
Run 400 meters
1 1/2 pood Kettlebell X 21 swings (or 55 pound dumbbell swing)
12 Pull-ups

9:22, subbed 45lb kb swings

First WOD coming off a long layoff. My time wasn’t too bad but it felt bad. I think I might have taken too much time off. Here it is 3 days later and I still haven’t worked out again since this so I guess I don’t really mean that though. Surprisingly, I haven’t been sore at all from this either. And to defend why I haven’t worked out since – I was at a Chick-Fil-A opening Wednesday and slept all day Thursday to recover then had some medical skills testing for a job that night.

It felt good to be out again on the track. I want to get a bunch of running in while the weather is good – as much as I can stand. I also wanted to start integrating more, shorter sprints. I saw on Josh Everett’s program that he sprints twice a week. The runs were the hardest part of Helen. I wore my Bulova Marine watch to keep time (the free one I got in the mail). I can never decide if that is helpful or hurtful for me when I’m running. I like to know my pace but I also want my body to dictate the pace – not the time.

Stacy did her workout at the same time (I’ll blog about that in a minute) and Ajax came with us so we had to bring a bunch of stuff with us. We walked in, Stacy carrying water and PVC pipes for both of us and I had a kettlebell in one hand, the baby in his car seat in the other, and my Kata bag full of watches, towels, pen, paper, etc. We need a better system if this is going to be a regular thing. Stacy suggested the stroller: that is a good idea.

“Randy“

75 pound Power snatch, 75 reps for time.

12:59 but accidentally subbed 95lb power snatch. Oops. Still a beastly workout.

Still knocking out the benchmark WODs. I really liked this one. I suck at them but really appreciate the snatch and welcome the practice. Would have been better practice at the RXd weight. I looked really sloppy at the 95lb weight. I realized it too late to start over – I was mostly done and WHOOPED.

This was the first WOD that I did at Young Life camp. I had originally prepared to keep on my routine while I was there but had mentally prepared myself to deal with that not happening. Awesomely but not surprisingly the limiting factor wasn’t energy but time. Camp is BUSY. It was also really encouraging to be able to go all day all week and not gas on anything really. My body was sore from being on my feet all the time but it didn’t really prevent me from doing anything. I wore my Bulova Marine watch that I got in the mail most of the week too. It was an awesome asset. This was kind of an impromptu workout so it was good to have my timer on me. It didn’t take all the preparation that it would have otherwise. I am, however, still getting crap in the mail from the marines trying to recruit “Rupert Everheart.” What a name. Ha ha.

I saw a Portland Corporate video of Josh Everett doing Randy that was posted recently. Man, is he incredible. He tore it up. Randy in 2:42 – MONSTER!

Apple’s designs never cease to amaze me.

I was playing around with the new Stopwatch in iPhone OS 3.0 and realized that the “Lap” button works on a “Touch Down” event. What this means is that the lap button will be pressed if you press your finger down on the button. Usually, other button have a “Touch Up Inside” event, which means that those buttons are pressed only after you have pressed your finger down on the button and lifted your finger off the button (not off any other part of the screen).

I suppose it is because when you are running, your finger could slip off the button when you go to lift your finger off the screen, so Apple made it a bit easier for pressing the “Lap” button by making it a “Touch Down” event.

It’s a little thing but I love the small attentions to detail that are made.
