Aquela poderia ser mais uma manhã como outra qualquer. Eis que o sujeito desce na estação do metrô: vestindo jeans, camiseta e boné, encosta-se próximo à entrada, tira o violino da caixa e começa a tocar com entusiasmo para a multidão que passa por ali, bem na hora do rush matinal.

Mesmo assim, durante os 45 minutos que tocou, foi praticamente ignorado pelos passantes.  Ninguém  sabia, mas o músico era Joshua Bell, um dos maiores violinistas do mundo,  executando peças musicais consagradas num instrumento raríssimo, um Stradivarius de 1713, estimado em mais de 3 milhões de dólares.

Alguns dias antes Bell havia tocado no Symphony Hall de Boston, onde os melhores lugares custam a bagatela de 1.000 dólares. A experiência, gravada em vídeo, mostra homens e mulheres de andar ligeiro, copo de café na mão, celular no ouvido, crachá  balançando no pescoço, indiferentes ao som do violino. A iniciativa realizada pelo  jornal “The Washington Post” era a de lançar um debate sobre valor, contexto e arte.

A conclusão: estamos acostumados a dar valor às coisas quando estão num contexto. Bell era uma obra de arte sem moldura. Um artefato de luxo sem etiqueta de grife. Esse é  um exemplo daquelas tantas situações que acontecem em nossas vidas que são únicas, singulares, e a que não damos a menor bola porque não vêm com a etiqueta de seu preço.

O que tem valor real para nós, independentemente de marcas, preços e grifes? É o que  o mercado diz que você deve ter, sentir, vestir ou ser?

Essa experiência mostra como na sociedade em que vivemos os nossos sentimentos e a  nossa apreciação de beleza são manipulados pelo mercado, pela mídia, e pelas instituições que detém o poder financeiro. Mostra-nos como estamos condicionados a nos mover quando estamos no meio do rebanho.

A week or so back Mr.Abhishek Singhvi in the op-ed page of the TIMES OF INDIA, Bangalore edition had in an article more or less titled “IQ-EQ”, made the point that the Nobel Laureate Mr.Venkatraman, by not being indulgent to the fans from his home town of Chidambaram, from the state of Tamil Nadu had betrayed that he lacked the EMOTIONAL QUOTIENT to empathize with the fans in Tamil Nadu. Almost as a response to that in today’s TIMES OF INDIA (27/10/2009- Bangalore Edition), one Mr.Ashok (said to be a bureaucrat) had defended the response of Mr.Venkatraman as a respose from a seeker of TRUTH and contrasted it with, the politician’s objective of a “just social order”. Very well written article- i should say.

The problem with Indians (including me) is that we do not want to accord SPACE to our fellow human beings. Every human being has rights but no LIBERTY. His LIBERTY, if exercised is immediately interpreted as a LICENSE granted by the society. Mr.Venkatraman had out of his own efforts made it to wherever he has made it. Even a week before the declaring of the Nobel Prize no Indian outside the scientific community had heard of the work done by Venkatraman. Suddenly after the receipt of RECOGNITION thru the ultimate prize, the politicians swing into action and lecture us as to how the recipient should have the Emotional Quotient, and be humble to the native Indians, etc. etc. Have the politicians named any main road in the capital city of New Delhi in the name of Sir C.V.Raman or Ramanujam or J.C.Bose in all these years? I know of only COPERNICUS MARG (the monk who discovered that the Earth was not the centre of the universe and left the proof for posthumous publishing, so as to avoid the Papal BULL!!), and none besides that radiates from INDIA GATE.

The roads that radiate are AKBAR road, Rajpath, Ashoka road, Kasturba Gandhi Marg, Copernicus Marg, Tilak Marg, Purana Qila road, the High court Road ( do not remember), Shah Jahan marg and one more. Of these roads there is only one SCIENTIST and that also a Polish. So where do we RECOGNIZE the discoveries of our own SCIENTISTS?

We are a nation led by some humbug palliatives. Mahatma Gandhi had contributed to this nation’s independence, had brought out the soul of India by organizing the nation against the British through NON-VIOLENCE. But who is Kasturba Gandhi and besides the fact that she had been the wife to the Mahatma, is there any other achievement that is worth remembering through the generations to pass in this country? I guess not. Yet we have named a road after her. Maybe we have used her name as a replacement to Lord Curzon, so it is okay. But why not name significant roads after C.V.Raman, Ramanujam, Hargobind Khurana (Medicine Nobelist), J.C.Bose, Chandrashekar? After all we haveerrectedstatues for the LIVING POLITICIANS too in India (Dr. M.Karunanidhi, Ms.Mayawati etc). Why do we not recognize their INDIVIDUAL EFFORTS?

Secondly, except for a few lectures delivered by Mr.Venkatraman in the IISc, Anna University has the COUNTRY FELICITATED him in any way by giving him FREE AIR TICKETS TO INDIA in our MAHARAJA AIRCRAFTS? OR the unpunctual TRAINS of India? or VIP protocol during his visits to India? No. That is preserved for the POLITICAL MARKETEERS!! The political marketeers who bring about a “JUST” social order thru PROCRUSTEAN methods. CUT THE BIG ONES TO FIT WITH THE COT OF UNIFORMITY!!!

Now that he had won the Nobel Prize, certain self- appointed high priests of social etiquette are prescribing SOCIAL BEHAVIOUR to our own NOBEL LAUREATE. If only such persons could influence the government and make policies relating to RECOGNITION OF INDIAN SCIENTISTS ABROAD, they would have done some service, instead of curbing the LIBERTY of a great mind.

Finally, Mr.Venkatraman is a scientist who is not into politics or marketing that he has to appease people with his charming behaviour. All great minds have their idiosyncrasies and it squarely falls within the LIBERTY of an Individual. If some fellow in Chidambaram is going to claim that he taught Mr.Venkatraman, when that is not the case, why should NOT Mr.Venkatraman deny it on record? Mr.Venkatraman still cycles and goes for work ( or so the reports say!), so why not leave a MAN alone who is busy with his own vocation and draw him into ACCEPTABLE SOCIAL BEHAVIOUR and make him feel guilty both in his own eyes and in the eyes of his fellow country men?

Mr. Abhishek Singhvi might even question the wisdom of Mr.Venkatraman wanting to buy a Stradivarius cello for his son paying $200,000/- when there are many Indians living below the opaque statistical poverty line!! Leave the man alone. The poor will always be there.

Let me reiterate what Jesus said: SABBATH WAS MADE FOR MAN, AND NOT MAN FOR THE SABBATH.

Bershka, cadena de moda joven lanzada por el Grupo Inditex en 1998 para acercarse al público juvenil, logró en el primer semestre del ejercicio superar a Zara, el buque insignia del gigante textil, en rentabilidad.

Al cierre del último ejercicio completo 2008/09, Stradivarius fue la línea de negocio más rentable, seguida de Pull & Bear, Zara y Bershka.

Según se desprende de la información semestral presentada a la Comisión Nacional del Mercado de Valores (CNMV), que en la primera mitad del año sólo detalla la evolución de Zara y Bershka y agrupa la evolución del resto de cadenas, la firma juvenil superó en rentabilidad a la cadena estrella de Inditex.

Bershka, que ya se ha consolidado como la segunda cadena en importancia para la compañía por facturación, logró un ebit (beneficio neto de explotación) de 56,91 millones de euros, cifra que supone un descenso del 5,3% en relación al ejercicio anterior. Con unas ventas de 511,3 millones de euros (un 14.7% más que en 2008), el ebit sobre ventas (ratio que mide la rentabilidad del negocio) se situó en 11,13%, frente al 13,48% del mismo periodo de 2008.

Zara
Mientras, Zara cerró el primer semestre con un ebit de 311,14 millones, lo que supone una caída del 13,36% en relación al anterior. Las ventas experimentaron un crecimiento del 3,2%, hasta 3.123 millones de euros. De esta forma, el ebit sobre ventas de Zara se situó en la primera mitad del año en el 9,96%, frente al 11,86% del año anterior, cuando Bershka también obtuvo una mayor rentabilidad. En el resto de cadenas, el margen conjunto se situó en el 10,07%, frente al 11,73% del año 2008.

Fuentes de Inditex explicaron que la rentabilidad de las cadenas cambia año a año en función de diferentes variables, como el número de aperturas y la ubicación de las tiendas, eventuales inversiones logísticas o la entrada en un nuevo mercado.

“Es lógico que otras cadenas del grupo sean más rentables que Zara, ya que esta enseña es la punta de lanza en la entrada en nuevos mercados y siempre busca las mejores localizaciones, lo que implica un mayor coste operativo, que luego aprovechan otras líneas de negocio del grupo”, apunta un experto del sector.

Otras fuentes consultadas justifican la menor rentabilidad de Zara en la primera mitad del ejercicio en su oferta comercial. Frente a la propuesta de Bershka, que es más básica y menos estacional, la campaña de otoño-invierno es determinante para Zara, ya que comercializa prendas de mayor importe y consigue una mayor rentabilidad.

En este ejercicio se da, además, la circunstancia particular de que el grueso de la expansión de Zara se acometerá en la segunda mitad del ejercicio, dato que explica la ralentización de la facturación. En los seis primeros meses, la inversión de Inditex en aperturas y reforma de establecimientos sumó 246 millones, frente a los 474,8 millones de un año antes. En 2009, el grupo prevé invertir 600 millones.

Stradivarius
Al cierre de 2008, Stradivarius, también especializada en moda joven a precios competitivos, fue la cadena más rentable con un ebit sobre ventas del 22,7%, seguida de Pull & Bear, que logró un ratio del 16,6%. Zara alcanzó una rentabilidad del 15,6%, mientras que Bershka cerró en el 15,1%.

En el primer semestre, Inditex registró unos resultados mejores de lo esperado por el mercado, gracias a la contención de costes. Las ventas crecieron un 7%, hasta 4.861 millones, en tanto que el beneficio bajó un 8%, hasta 375 millones.

La remuneración del consejo sube un 7,29%
El consejo de administración del Grupo Inditex percibió en el primer semestre de su ejercicio fiscal, cerrado el pasado 31 de julio, una remuneración conjunta de 3,48 millones de euros, cifra que supone un crecimiento del 7,29% en relación al mismo periodo del año anterior. El órgano de administración del gigante textil está compuesto por nueve miembros.

Por su parte, la remuneración del equipo directivo (que al igual en el caso del consejo, incluye las indemnizaciones percibidas por los ejecutivos) aumentó un 6%, hasta 7,779 millones de euros. La sociedad reconoce una operación vinculada con los administradores y directivos (o personas vinculadas a ellos) por la prestación de servicios por 986.000 euros, así como con sociedades de su accionista de control (Amancio Ortega) de arrendamiento de activos, por los que abonó 6,18 millones, y prestación de servicios, por los que percibió 2,92 millones. El gasto de personal sumó 11,024 millones de euros.

Por otra parte, al cierre del primer semestre, Inditex mantuvo intacta su autocartera, en comparación al 31 de enero de 2009, con un total de 221.264 acciones propias, equivalentes al 0,035% del capital social. En relación a la primera mitad de 2008, la autocartera se ha reducido en más de diez veces, como consecuencia de la finalización el pasado 1 de octubre del plan de opciones sobre acciones aprobado por la junta general de accionistas el 18 de julio de 2006. En total, se han entregado 455.748 títulos a directivos y 121.500 a consejeros.

Acelerón en Zara
La segunda mitad del año concentrará el grueso de aperturas de Zara. En el primer semestre, inauguró 40 establecimientos y concluyó con 1.560 locales. A partir de 2010, empezará la venta a través de Internet.

Bershka engorda
La cadena juvenil gana importancia dentro del grupo y, en los seis primeros meses del año, abrió 35 nuevas tiendas y alcanzó los 626 establecimientos. Consolida su avance frente a Pull & Bear, que se sitúa en 602 tiendas.

Oysho pisa el freno
En la primera mitad del ejercicio, la cadena de moda íntima Oysho puso en marcha ocho tiendas, frente a las 41 de un año antes. Esta enseña, que tuvo una evolución inferior a la media del grupo, ya cuenta con 382 locales.

Pesquisador da Empa, Centro de pesquisas em ciência e tecnologia de materiais da Alemanha, Francis Schwarze, desenvolveu “tratamento” em madeira de violino com uma linhagem de fungo para melhorar a sonoridade do instrumento. Após o tratamento, o violino teve sua sonoridade comparada com um famoso violino do modelo Stradivarius datado de 1711, considerado um dos melhores violinos do mundo.

Durante o teste, o violinista inglês Matthew Trustler tocou 5 diferentes violinos atrás de uma cortina, para que “experts” não pudessem ver que instrumento tocava. Um dos instrumentos tocados foi seu próprio Stradivarius, cotado em US$ 2 milhões. Os outros quatro eram instrumentos feitos pelo luthier Rhonheimer, dois dos quais tiveram sua madeira tratada com fungos. Um dos violinos tratados foi avaliado por 90 de 180 pessoas como tendo apresentado a melhor sonoridade dos cinco instrumentos avaliados.

O teste é extremamente subjetivo, e muito difícil de ser medido. Todavia, os instrumentos criados por Antonio Giacomo Stradivarius são até hoje considerados os melhores já feitos. Isso porque a Europa passou por anos de invernos extremamente rigorosos entre 1645 e 1715, quando as árvores se desenvolveram muito mais lentamente e produziram madeira de excelente sonoridade. A utilização desta madeira na fabricação de violinos permitiu Stradivarius construir instrumentos de sonoridade incomparável.

O violino fungado desenvolvido por Francis Schwarze é considerado um produto que deverá causar uma revolução na concepção destes instrumentos, pois será possível se fabricar violinos muito melhores e ao mesmo tempo muito mais baratos. O tratamento fúngico modifica a estrutura das células da madeira, reduzindo sua densidade e aumentando sua homogeneidade, o que faz o som do violino se tornar mais “quente” e “redondo”.

Fungos são verdadeiras maravilhas da natureza, e também algumas das maiores desgraças. Dentre os fungos destacam-se os cogumelos, dos quais muitos são comestíveis, como o cogumelo de Paris, a trombeta da morte (apesar do nome), a pleurote, dentre outros. Mas muitos são extremamente venenosos, como Amanita muscaria. Outros são halucinogênicos, como Psilocybe mexicana (fonte de psilocibina) e Claviceps purpurea, fonte de ácido lissérgico. Alguns fungos filamentosos são extremamente patogênicos e difíceis de tratar, como Candida albicans. Outros são verdadeiras delícias, como as trufas. I fungi virtuosi. We laten niet alleen hele nuanceringen weg, ook alle niet-essentiële woorden. Er blijft kindertaal over. En daarvan halen we tenslotte de klinkers weg. Korter dan kort. Krtr dn krt.

Na een vakantieonderbreking bloggen we vrolijk verder. Al krijg ik wel eens de opmerking dat het meer op ‘columneren’ lijkt dan op bloggen. Maar juist het aardige van bloggen is dat iedereen een eigen vorm kiest. Toegegeven, mijn breedsprakige columns vol toegepaste liefde voor belegen woorden zijn niet echt van deze tijd. Integendeel. Het moet echt korter, sneller. Want niemand heeft de tijd om breedsprakigheid te belonen met aandacht. Dat zien we elke dag om ons heen. Het begon misschien wel met sms-verkeer: ‘bn ff nr kppr, CU’. Noodgedwongen, als gevecht tegen de kosten worden sms-teksten kien teruggebracht tot symboolcodes. Zoals een verkeersbord het parkeren verbiedt in een enkele aanblik, kunnen drie toetsen van elke mobiele een somber gezichtje uitdrukken. Of een knipoog met uitgestoken tong. En zo gaat het ook met de tekstregels in onze Facebook, Linkedin en Hyves profielen. “Nieuw blog Jean-Paul” is zo’n zin. En die moet er dan voor zorgen dat echte liefhebbers even klikken. Of sneller nog, even de headline scannen. Als de kopregel zegt: “Geen eetlust, wel seks” dan heb ik meer dan 120 lezers die dag. En doe ik “Belastingaangifte de deur uit” decimeert dat aantal. Wat ik verder in die tekst schrijf, maakt niets uit. Zo zijn de cijfers. Het gaat bij TV, krant en website om de headline. Zojuist ontving ik een Facebook regel: Coldplay @ Nijmegen was super, en kreeg elders de uitnodiging: zat.bbq @ st.pieter. Heel snel leert iedereen headlines schrijven. Met name twitteraars weten daar alles van. Met 140 karakters moet je het doen. En gebruik je ze werkelijk allemaal dan ben je gek, want dat leest geen hond. Hou het toch kort.
En dan opeens… zie ik weer dat web-tv interview met Nic Tummers uit 2003. Die daarin ten strijde trekt tegen de vervlakking, de eenzijdigheid van onze aandacht. De totale waan van de dag die ons blind maakt voor mooie dingen. Ik was het 6 jaar geleden al erg met hem eens en geniet bij dit weerzien opnieuw van zijn rebelse opvattingen. Een paar jaar later – in april 2007 – neemt werelds meest virtuoze violist Joshua Bell de proef op de som. Gekleed als straatmuzikant speelt hij op zijn Stradivarius uit 1713 een van de moeilijkste vioolpartijen aller tijden. En dat alles in de lullige hal van een metrostation. Om te beproeven of er passanten zijn die zijn buitengewone prestatie waarderen. Mogelijk zelfs herkennen. In de drie kwartier dat hij viool speelt wandelen meer dan 1.000 mensen hem straal voorbij. Na zijn concert ligt er slechts 32 dollar in zijn vioolkoffer. Zeven mensen hebben even stilstaand geluisterd, niemand langer dan een minuut. ‘Well done Joshua. Het zegt immers niets over je vioolspel… maar alles over deze bizarre maatschappij’. En zoals Nick Tummers zegt: ‘Het klinkt in ons hoofd al lang niet meer… we horen slechts medeklinkers‘.

Wondrous machine, the Cavaillé-Coll organ at St. Sulpice

French organ music is my favorite drug. Give me a recording of music by Vierne, Dupré, Touremire or  Messiaen played on a big Cavaillé-Coll organ and I don’t need dessert.  Probably don’t need dinner either. Messiaen’s organ music seduced me years ago and there’s still nothing in all the world that stirs me as much.  Christmas music? Give me La nativité du seigneur above all else. Need a thrill? Play the Sortie from the Messe de la pentecôte loud, real loud. More than Buxtehude and even more than Bach, Messiaen’s organ music hits me right between the eyes.

What’s there to listen to after Messiaen? The two French composers who have impressed me most are Jeanne Demessieux (1921-1968) and Thierry Escaich (b. 1965).

Demessieux

A private student of the great Marcel Dupré, Demessieux was an award-winning organist and composer. She was a virtuoso of astounding talent and a prolific recording artist (although you wouldn’t know that by the paltry number of her recordings that are still in print) who was far too young when she died. Her music has an intensity that is matched by its sheer difficulty. This has to be terrifying music to play.  A recording by the organist Maurizio Ciampi on the Stradivarius label has become a great favorite of mine. Ciampi is up to the technical challenges – his  pedal work kills – and makes me want to hear him play more of Demessieux’s music, or anything else for that matter. Speaking of pedal work, apparently Demessieux dazzled North American audiences by her quicksilver pedal-playing in high heels.

Here’s Demessieux’s Octaves from her Six  Etudes performed by Maxime Patel. The playing isn’t as technically secure as Ciampi’s but its fun to see the pedal work.

 

Thierry Escaich

He gives you so many reasons to like the music of your century!

“Thierry Escaich: one of the composers of today who gives you so many reasons to like the music of your century!”  That’s the greeting from Escaich’s homepage and it’s true, he makes me like music of my century! Escaich’s music is as intense as Messiaen  and Demessieux’s  and, like Messiaen, has  that whiff of the delicious perfume of the ecstatic that I find so compelling. Escaich is also a virtuoso organist; he is the successor to Maurice Duruflé as organist at the church of St. Etienne du Mont in Paris.

I’ve been reveling in Escaich’s recording of his own works on the Calliope label. He plays the Cavaillé-Coll organ at St. Etienne du Mont in a program that features some solo works that give Demessieux’s murderous Octaves a run for its money. I also recommend the terrific recording on the Accord label (with Olivier Latry at the organ console) of his Organ Concerto. If you get really hooked, try his oratorio  Le Dernier Èvangile on the Hortus label.

 The master should have the last word though,  here’s Naji Hakim playing Messiaen’s  Dieu parmi nous from La nativité du seigneur.

I ♥ my new beau blazer

My new fave shop (well, it def. hit the top 5) is Stradivarius – thats where i found my new b-blazer in a fantastic grey (was available in various colors)

The shop has some very cool items from accessories to shoes, jackets, dresses, tops, jeans -you name it, they’ve probably got it. I find their style mostly rockish, or like rockglam.. but you can find very different styles there.

Today I got new clothes!! I can’t wait to wear them!! Here is the t-shirt

I have to say I fell in love with the t-shirt when I saw it!

And here are the leggins, I saw them last winter, but I didn’t buy them back then cause I thought they didn’t look good on me, but today I saw them again at the shops, and I changed my mind

Both things are from Stradivarius.

Ayer tras la comida he ido a la Feria de Muestras.

A cumplir otra tradición del verano gijonés. Lo cierto es que ya tenía asumido que este año no la pisaría, pero tras la comida, y en compañía de mi hermana, cuñado y sobrinos, allí nos plantamos.

Ayer, día grande de las fiestas, y día en que un banco regala entradas a “todo dios” para que vaya a pasar el día en el recinto. Nosotros nos limitamos a ver los pabellones institucionales y muy poco los comerciales. Por lo general, se va a la Feria, a comer bocadillos y recoger toda la publicidad y objetos que te regalen. Es como una competición para ver quién sale con más bolsas y más llenas de basura.

Ayer, el banco que regalaba las entradas, regalaba gorras a los visitantes de su pabellón. En él había una exposición sobre el Sistema solar, bastante interesante. Número de personas en el interior: unas 30. Número de personas en la cola habilitada para recoger la gorra: cientos. No exagero.

Así, en casi todos los lugares en donde dieran algo gratis, lo que fuera.

En el centro del recinto ferial, y delante del Pabellón central y del Palacio de congresos, hay un pabellón de los de toda la vida, fijo, propio de la empresa, de una empresa que se dedica al Cemento, las piedras, el mortero, materiales para la construcción… No regalan nada.

Entramos. En el interior 6 personas, las tres que salían en el momento que entrábamos nosotros ( cuatro adultos y tres niños), el guardia de seguridad, y las dos personas que se encargaban de atender el pabellón.

En el pabellón: una exposición de cuadros de la colección de la Fundación Masaveu, uno de los asturianos ilustres y fallecido. En una mesa, un violín. Construído en 1720. Hace más de 300 años. Uno de los pocos que se mantienen integramente tal y como cuando se fabricó por el luthier, un tal Stradivarius, ¿os suena?. Expuesto públicamente por segunda vez desde su adquisición por la familia. Un verdadero tesoro.

Cuando saliamos del pabellón se quedaban dentro 7 personas, los tres fijos y los cuatro que nos relevaron.

Después de todo, la Feria no es más que un reflejo de la sociedad actual en la que vivimos.

Washington, DC Metro Station on a cold January morning……

The man with a violin played six Bach pieces for about 45 minutes. During that time approx 2,000 people went through the station, most of them on their way to work.

After 3 minutes a middle aged man noticed there was a musician playing. He slowed his pace and stopped for a few seconds and then hurried to meet his schedule.

4 minutes later: The violinist received his first dollar: a woman threw the money in the hat and, without stopping, continued to walk.

6 minutes: A young man leaned against the wall to listen to him, then looked at his watch and started to walk again.

10 minutes: A 3-year old boy stopped but his mother tugged him along hurriedly. The kid stopped to look at the violinist again, but the mother pushed hard and the child continued to walk, turning his head all the time. This action was repeated by several other children. Every parent, without exception, forced their children to move on quickly.

30 minutes: The musician played continuously. Only 6 people stopped and listened for a short while. About 20 gave money but continued to walk at their normal pace.

The man collected a total of $32.

45 minutes: He finished playing and silence took over. No one noticed. No one applauded, nor was there any recognition.

No one knew this, but the violinist was Joshua Bell, one of the greatest musicians in the world.

He played one of the most intricate pieces ever written, with a Stradivarius violin worth $3.5 million dollars.

Two days before, Joshua Bell sold out a theatre in Boston where the seats averaged $100.

This is a true story. Joshua Bell playing incognito in the metro station was organised by the Washington Post as part of a social experiment about perception, taste and people’s priorities.

The questions raised by the paper:

• In a commonplace environment at an inappropriate hour, do we perceive beauty?

• Do we stop to appreciate it?

• Do we recognize talent in an unexpected context?

If we do not have a moment to stop and listen to one of the best musicians in the world, playing some of the finest music ever written, with one of the most beautiful instruments ever made…. how many other things are we missing?
