A 29-year-old Darwin male took the device home from work about six months ago, before he finally contacted police to have it removed.

“The attending police officers confirmed the device was a badly crumpled detonator and a bomb technician from the Territory response squad was called in to remove it.”

I breathe in deep. I feel my back popping as my spine readjusts to accomodate. Surely there is no audible sound but a crackling reverberates through my skull, bypassing my ears. My jaw feels tense and so do the knuckles in my hands. What is wrong with me, what has happened to me? All right, need to think. How did I get here? Figure that out and maybe I’m golden. This place looks familiar but strangely it feels less real. My interaction with my inner self seems much stronger than with this world, feels as if I’m just floating here but have to motivate this body to keep moving. Is this really my body? Feels like there is some sort of uncomfortable burning at the core of my chest. Every so often, I feel my cell phone vibrate in my pocket against my leg and yet when I check it, it doesn’t say I’ve missed a call or recieved a message. Also, there are voices. I hear people calling out to me, sometimes even using my name, but the voices are from strangers or just echoing in the air. Concentration is also an issue. The mind is scattered to a point where focus is near impossible outside of short, vibrant bursts. Certainly not the most pleasant situation to be in. I must find out what happened to me. After all, seek out the source and you can fix the problem… right?

Finding myself making every possible mistake

In this very strange world…
Every possible mistake
Mistakes, mistakes, mistakes…

By MICHAEL SCHNEIDER – Variety.com

Sci Fi is developing a new take on “Alien Nation,” the 1988 feature that previously spawned a spinoff series on Fox.

“Angel” alum Tim Minear — no stranger to sci-fi tales, having worked on “The X-Files,” “Firefly” and “Strange World” — is penning the fresh take on the franchise. Fox 21, the alternative production arm of 20th Century Fox TV, will produce.

“Alien Nation” centers on the partnership between a veteran cop and his alien detective partner, set against the larger tale of alien “newcomers” who move to Earth and attempt to assimilate into society.

Fox 21 topper Chris Carlisle said he believed “Alien Nation” could rep the next franchise revival for Sci Fi, which found huge success in dusting off “Battlestar Galactica” and reworking it for today’s auds. Carlisle said “Alien Nation” works both as a sci-fi piece and a procedural drama.

“It’s absolute perfect timing for this type of show,” Carlisle said. “They’re looking for more grounded sci-fi and close-ended episodes, and at the heart of ‘Alien Nation,’ it’s a cop movie. It’s grounded. And it has a tremendous amount of dramatic possibilities and humor.”

Sci Fi is also looking to broaden its footprint, as it preps to rebrand itself as “Syfy” next week.

“It’s very much in keeping with what we’ve been looking to do — find themes that are more than just hard sci-fi, something that feels contemporary and relevant and invites a broad audience in,” said Sci Fi original programming exec VP Mark Stern.

The new “Alien Nation” would include a mythology that evolves over time and will also touch on some of the issues of the day, such as the immigrant experience and how society integrates an incoming culture.

Minear said he’s looking forward to incorporating a mix of all the different kinds of series he’s written in the past.

“It’s genre mixed with procedural mixed with funny and mixed with big, giant scary,” Minear said. “I love serialized stuff, but this is also a cop franchise. That ‘Starsky and Hutch’/'Lethal Weapon’ buddy cop comedy is absent from TV right now.”

Minear is currently busy outlining the “Alien Nation” script and mapping out the project’s mythology. The new “Alien Nation” will likely take place in the Pacific Northwest, and will take place about 20 years after the first ship of aliens – who have been banished as slaves – crash lands into Earth.

By the time the show begins, some time in the 2020s, the alien population has multiplied from a few thousand to 3.5 million. And much of the “newcomers” live their own segregated existence, in what Minear compares to the North African ghettos in France.

“You can take (the original ‘Alien Nation’) a step forward and really do a show that encompasses the clash of civilizations, and the idea of a ghettoized minority,” he said. ”You can touch on racism, terrorism, assimilation, immigration. And there’s room for satire.”

The original film, which took place in 1991, was helmed by Graham Baker and written by Rockne S. O’Bannon (with an uncredited revise by James Cameron). Mandy Patinkin and James Caan starred as alien cop Sam Francisco and his reluctant human partner, respectively; Terence Stamp also starred.

In 1989, 20th Century Fox TV and Kenneth Johnson Prods. adapted the movie for Fox, with Eric Pierpoint and Gary Graham in the lead roles. The show lasted just a single season but spawned a series of books.

The TV show was revived in 1994 as a series of telepics for Fox, starting with “Alien Nation: Dark Horizon.” Five TV movies were ultimately aired; the last, “Alien Nation: The Udara Legacy,” ran in 1997.

Stern said Sci Fi had been looking at “Alien Nation” as a potential franchise for several years and had talked to several writers about ways to update the concept for modern auds.

“The challenge is how do you do it in a way that will reinvent it without it feeling like a derivative rehash,” he said. “We sat down with Tim, who is someone we’d been looking to work with for quite a while, and his approach felt like it wouldn’t be a traditional adaptation. We got excited.”

Minear said he’d been anxious to develop for cable – and in particular, Sci Fi. The success of “Battlestar” fueled his interest in reviving “Alien Nation,” he said.

“Twenty years (after ‘Alien Nation’), TV as a whole has evolved, and you can explore issues and go deeper with subject matter than you ever could before,” Minear said. “On cable, you can play with ambiguity. This is a place I want to be.”

Ethiopian patriarch tells pope he will show artifact to world

The patriarch of the Orthodox Church of Ethiopia says he will announce to the world Friday the unveiling of the Ark of the Covenant, perhaps the world’s most prized archaeological and spiritual artifact, which he says has been hidden away in a church in his country for millennia, according to the Italian news agency Adnkronos.

Abuna Pauolos, in Italy for a meeting with Pope Benedict XVI this week, told the news agency, “Soon the world will be able to admire the Ark of the Covenant described in the Bible as the container of the tablets of the law that God delivered to Moses and the center of searches and studies for centuries.”

The announcement is expected to be made at 2 p.m. Italian time from the Hotel Aldrovandi in Rome. Pauolos will reportedly be accompanied by Prince Aklile Berhan Makonnen Haile Sellassie and Duke Amedeo D’Acosta.

“The Ark of the Covenant is in Ethiopia for many centuries,” said Pauolos. “As a patriarch I have seen it with my own eyes and only few highly qualified persons could do the same, until now.”

According to Pauolos, the actual Ark has been kept in one church, but to defend the treasure, a copy was placed in every single church in Ethiopia.

He said a museum is being built in Axum, Ethiopia, where the Ark will be displayed. A foundation of D’Acosta will fund the project.

If you’re a journalist — or like me, a journalist on hiatus — you can’t swin

If you’re a journalist — or like me, a journalist on hiatus — you can’t swing a dead, overpaid, short-sighted, publicly craven corporate media executive without coming across some online piece about where the newspaper industry went wrong to wind up stuck in the financial equivalent of the La Brea tar pits. And if you miss one of those articles with that gas-bloated, maggot-gnawed corpse, you’re bound to make contact with analysis on how the industry needs to change its business model before it’s just another example of economic intelligent design Darwinism. Everyone has an idea: Pay walls, micropayments, Superman using a giant future miracle machine to wish for a happy ending.

This week, the Web has been reacting to Clay Shirky’s analysis piece — and I’d add the adjective “definitive” to that — “Newspapers and Thinking the Unthinkable.” It’s an insightful piece that I won’t bother to repeat here; you should go and read it yourself. Essentially, Shirky dissects the industry’s current predicament, debunks much of the conventional wisdom about what/who is to blame, deflates many of the new ideas to create alternative revenue streams for newspapers and, finally, comes to this conclusion:

Society doesn’t need newspapers. What we need is journalism. For a century, the imperatives to strengthen journalism and to strengthen newspapers have been so tightly wound as to be indistinguishable. That’s been a fine accident to have, but when that accident stops, as it is stopping before our eyes, we’re going to need lots of other ways to strengthen journalism instead.

…

No one experiment is going to replace what we are now losing with the demise of news on paper, but over time, the collection of new experiments that do work might give us the journalism we need.

Those are sobering words for anyone who has put food on their table working at a newspaper. Living in a world of economic uncertainty is one thing. Living in that same world and finding out your profession is either no longer capable of maintaining a livable wage (best-case scenario) or simply obsolete (worst-case scenario) is another thing.

But this also means journalists are possibly on the ground floor of something great. Those reporters and editors who’ve always wanted to remake newspapers — or in this case, news-gathering organizations — into something better, something purer, here’s their chance. And that’s a thrilling, intoxicating prospect. I hope the members of the industry are up to the challenge and willing to embrace journalism over embracing business models.

• • •

Like I said, Shirky’s analysis has drawn quite a bit analysis of its own online. One response I found interesting can be found at the Web site League of Ordinary Gentlemen. Although the writer agrees for the most part in what Shirky has to say, he’s not keen on the wave of “schadenfreude directed towards newspapers,” especially by people working at papers. He calls it posturing for the most part, a way for journalists to ensure they don’t look like they’re out of the cultural loop.

I understand the point, but I think he underestimates the traditional dissatisfaction the rank and file have had with newspaper management. I’ve worked in newsrooms for more than a decade, and I’ve witnessed firsthand (and quite likely might have been one myself) journalists criticizing publishers and board of directors for being unimaginative, short-sighted and uninterested in journalistic quality. The schadenfreude the writer hears now largely comes from that frustration spilling out of the newsroom and onto the Web.

Bill Simmons

One of the more unusual places I’ve come across a dialogue about newspapers and the Internet was on ESPN sportswriter Bill Simmons‘ podcast, The B.S. Report With Bill Simmons. Simmons and his guest, author Chuck Klosterman, talk back and forth about their own experiences with papers and use their personal experiences to extrapolate causes for the industry subcumbing to the power of the Web. It’s a fascinating discussion (although you can’t necessarily interpret much of it as authoritative), largely because Simmons brings up a contributing factor for the plight of newspapers that I haven’t heard mentioned before: unions for journalists. Simmons’ contention (which is about 10 to 15 minutes into the podcast) is that journalist guilds have created a standard of mediocrity at papers and protected — as well as overpaid — dead weight in newsrooms.

His point — albeit overstated — is not without merit. I’ve worked in newsrooms where I was protected by the union, and I’ve worked in newsrooms as an editor where the union didn’t cover me, but I needed to work with its members when it came to personnel issues. Working in those situations, I saw union-mandated wages play a contributing role in hindering a publishing endeavor from succeeding. I’ve also worked in newsrooms as a writer and an editor where there was no union. In that environment, I witnessed questionable and, in my opinion, unfair treatment of employees. If given a choice, I’d rather work at a paper with a union, even if I’m working in management at that paper. It creates a sense of fairness at the very least, even if the relationship resembles the Cold War.

• • •

Finally, an observation that doesn’t require a source text.

This week, the Seattle Post-Intelligencer ceased publishing a print edition, moving its efforts exclusively online. The coverage I read centered on what this move means for the Seattle, what it means for newspapers in general, and what it means for the journalists who lost their jobs.

Know what wasn’t mentioned? All the non-journalists who lost their jobs with the P-I’s move online. Where are the stories about the people working in the pressroom? Does anyone care about the drivers who delivered the print edition who are now out of jobs? A newspaper is a huge operation that requires more than just reporters and editors.

In fact, the plight of the journalists is less tragic than the plight of the men and women who work the printing presses at papers that are closing down. Newsgathering has a future as a profession. What do you think the future of a pressman is in a world where newspapers are dying?

A suggestion to journalists: When you’re lamenting in print the loss of your colleagues in the work force, don’t forget that your colleagues don’t just work in newsrooms. They work in prepress, in the IT area, in accounting, HR and with the presses. Those losses are just as important and just as newsworthy.

In my inbox was an item addressed from my former employer the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel with a subject line that read: “We want you back.”

YES! After months of being unemployed, the Journal Sentinel wants me back! The higher-ups finally realized my editing and writing talents are just what the industry needs to get it back on track and make newspapers the cash cows they historically have been. I can finally buy that big-sceen TV and iPhone I’ve always wanted. Plus, I can start eating daily meals of bologna and ramen stew.

Then I opened the e-mail, wondering what job I was being summoned to perform. And this is what greeted me:

Dear Joe Vince:

Beat Ettlin’s family were asleep in their suburban Garran (Canberra) home when they were awoken by a kangaroo early on Sunday morning.

Mr Ettlin says the animal initially crashed through the window and landed on his bed. “My initial thought when I was half awake was, ‘it’s a lunatic ninja coming through the window’,” he said. He cornered the kangaroo in his son’s bedroom and dragged it out of the house before anyone was hurt.

Inside, the animal – which Mr Ettlin said was about his own height, 5 ft 9 in (175cm) – had gouged holes in the furniture and smeared blood over the walls as it bounced around the house.

“I just kept holding the covers over my head and felt the kangaroo jumping on top of us,” recalled Mr Ettlin’s wife, Verity. She described her husband as “a hero: a hero in Bonds undies” – referring to a brand of underwear popular in Australia.

Kangaroos are beginning a class struggle for equality and are demanding the right to a plasma TV, beer, a sofa and the remote! They have begun invading homes, taking what they demand.

The left wing of the Kangaroos Rights party, led by Kevin Rood are quite willing to share with humans while the much more strident Kangaroos First the right wing of the movement, under the mentorship of John Rooward, are demanding that Human beings in Australia “Go back to where they came from!” Namely the primeval slime!

BERLIN – Two childhood sweethearts, aged six and seven, eloped from Hanover in northern Germany on New Year’s Eve, determined to tie the knot under the African sun, police said on Monday.

The pair identified as Mika and Anna-Lena “are very much in love and decided to get married in Africa where it is warm, taking with them as a witness Anna-Lena’s little sister, aged five,” police spokesman Holger Jureczko told AFP.

The idea for the romantic trip began when Mika told the two girls about his recent holiday in Italy, while their families celebrated New Year’s Eve together. “From this, the children began to make plans for the future,” Jureczko said. As the first dawn of 2009 broke, the trio started to put these plans into action, packing all the essentials for the journey, including “sunglasses, swimming trunks, a lilo, summer clothes and provisions”.

While their parents slept, they left their house in the suburbs of Hanover, walked a kilometre up the road to a tram stop from where they took a tram for the central station.

Waiting for a train to the airport, they aroused the attention of a guard who contacted police. Two officers managed to convince the young lovers that they would struggle to get to Africa without money or a plane ticket. As a consolation, the children were given a special tour of the police headquarters at Hanover station, where they were especially taken with the detention cells.

Their relieved parents picked them up from the station, the spokesman said, adding: “They can still put their plan into action at a later date.”

The spokesman for the northern town said the sharp rise at an abandoned garden allotment site on the edge of the town was because the rats had a plentiful supply of food from an adjacent rubbish dump.

According to legend, a colourful or “pied” rat catcher lured all the rats out of town in 1284 by playing his pipe.

When the townspeople refused to pay him, he did the same with Hamelin’s children and they were never seen again.

I wish that I just made this stuff up.

Excerpts taken from a site paid for by the London Stock Exchange:

“Towards the head of the procession you will see two stern but benevolent wicker giants. They are Gog and Magog, the traditional guardians of the City of London, and they have been carried in the Lord Mayor’s Show since the reign of Henry V.”

“Gog and Magog, or sometimes Gogmagog and Corineus, are descended from the pagan giants of early English pageantry and their origins lie in ancient legends of Britain’s beginning. The story goes that Diocletian – the Roman Emperor – had thirty-three wicked daughters. He managed to find thirty-three husbands to curb their unruly ways, but the daughters were not pleased, and under the leadership of their eldest sister Alba they plotted to cut the throats of their husbands as they slept.”

“For this crime they were set adrift in a boat with half a year’s rations, and after a long and dreadful journey they arrived at the islands which came to be named Albion, after the eldest. Here they stayed, and by coupling with demons they populated the the wild, windswept islands with a race of giants.”

“Some time later Brutus, the great-grandson of Æneas, fled the fall of Troy and by way of various scrapes arrived at the same islands. He too named them for himself, so we also know them as Britain. With him he brought his most able warrior and champion, Corineus, who faced the leader of the giant brood in single combat and eventually hurled him from a high rock to his death. The name of the giant was Gogmagog and the rock from which he was thrown became known as Langnagog or “The Giants Leap”. As a reward Corineus was given the western part of the island, which came to be called Cornwall after him. Brutus travelled to the east and founded the city of New Troy, which eventually came to be known as London.”

“Isn’t it weird to see all the suffering involved to sustain the vanity of people that have too much money and too little brain and can spend in a single sparkling stone the amount of money that could sustain one whole family in one of those places for a long time?
