This morning was great! We woke up at my parents and had coffee while chatting on the couch. Then we got ready for the day. I went to the basement and did the elliptical for a quick 28 minutes then jumped in the shower while my egg white casserole was overcooking in the oven (bummer!).

Then Brady and I headed to his grandparents – they live 15 minutes from my parents house- for brunch and my parents and brother went to Chautauqua.

We had a great brunch with lots of yummy treats to get the morning started.

There was fruit

Pineapple/French Toast casserole

My egg white spinach and artichoke strata

Nut bread

Everything was great. It was really nice to catch up with Brady’s cousins and family. After breakfast we relaxed, looked through black friday adds, and played Wii!

Then we took off to go to Chautauqua.

A strata is an Italian egg and bread casserole. You can assemble this dish and refrigerate it over

A strata is an Italian egg and bread casserole. You can assemble this dish and refrigerate it over night, then cook in the morning which makes it a great dish for brunches. This version makes use of seasonal leeks when you don’t feel like eating them in the tradition potato leek soup (though that’s something I look forward to every year!) or leek quiche. I liked making the strata because I could make a dish as satisfying as a quiche but with wheat bread instead of a crust.

The cubed bread in the buttered baking dish.

The eggs mixture being poured over the bread.

Leek Strata

Ingredients:

3 slices whole wheat bread, cubed

7 large eggs

3 medium sized leeks, chopped fine

1 cup milk

8 ounces feta cheese (or chevre), crumbled

2 Tbsp olive oil

1 tsp dried thyme (or 2 tsp fresh thyme)

1/2 tsp salt

pepper to taste

1 Tbsp butter

Method: Preheat your oven to 350 degrees. Heat the olive oil in a large skillet on med/high heat and then add the leeks. Saute them until they are soft. Meanwhile butter a 3 quart casserole dish and fill the bottom with the cubed bread.

In a large mixing bowl whisk together the eggs, milk, thyme, salt, and pepper until will blended. Add the crumbled feta and the leeks when the leeks have cooled down a bit. Mix well and then pour over the bread cubes making sure you spread it out evenly. Let the dish sit for about ten minutes to let the eggs and milk soak the bread.

Bake in the oven between 45 minutes to an hour*. The sides should pull away slightly and be golden.

Recipe notes: This is a very flexible dish. You can make many substitutions such as chard and onions for the leeks. You can use a sharp cheddar instead of feta or add Parmesan to it. Keep the bread and the milk proportions the same and change out any of the other ingredients you like.

*Check it at 45 minutes, which is when mine was done, but some ovens cook hotter and some cooler so if it seems a little wet on the top still let it cook a little longer. It should be moist inside but the top shouldn’t have a runny appearance.

Social stratification. Class system. These are both archaic concepts, long overthrown in Europe and never seriously present in the United States. This is what we’ve been taught, this is clearly what happens in reality. The US prides itself in being a welcoming place for all people, no matter where they came from.

Yeah, right.

Let’s face it. The United States of America is more bigoted and racist as a culture than perhaps any other nation since, well, the United States. Has it ever occurred to anybody that you never see reports of British neo-nazis, of white hate crimes towards any other race other than here? Has it ever occurred to you that of all the other First-World nations, the United States has the most colorful record of slavery, racism, prejudice, and segregation of any ethnically heterogeneous population. (I need to put heterogeneous in because without it, you get nations like Ireland, which are not fair comparisons to what I’m trying to put across here.)

Here, a bullet-list of all the various prejudices and social issues that the United States so proudly counts as part of its heritage:

Catholics. Present in the American population since before 1776, this took until the election of JFK in 1960 to really work its way out of the collective American psyche.

Blacks. Present since the widespread adoption of slavery in the colonies in 1680. Slavery, while formally abolished in 1863, did nothing to stem the racism towards blacks, formally and legally abolished in 1964, but still present in many areas of American life even today, whether you consciously aware of it or not.

Women. Present in the American population since the beginning of ever, women were denied the right to vote and other social necessities until the passing of the 19th Amendment in 1920. Nowadays, women are, nominally, more or less equal, though there are lingering effects, such as women being paid 75% as much as men for doing the same exact job.

Native Americans. Very strong prejudices against Native Americans existed in the United States ever since the white people realized that the land that they wanted had other people living on it. This, in turn, led to such things such as the Trail of Tears, reservations, etc. This particular social ill died out after America reached California and Manifest Destiny petered out. As it is, though, the Native American population is vastly reduced from what it used to be not 300 years ago, and they are still mostly out of sight on reservations, living their lives, unfortunately, in destitution and squalor.

And this is just a small list. I hear stories every day that prove racism is still alive and well.

Nowadays, it seems that America has latched on to anti-Islamism. You hear reports of terrorists in Afghanistan existing. Fair enough, these reports might be true. But then, take a look at the Google news search for “terrorist threat.” Sure, one or two of these reports might actually be about terrorists. The rest have headlines like, “Are American Muslims a Threat?” and “The emerging homegrown terrorist threat.” I mean, there is a point where fear crosses over into ludicrousness. We are way past that point. We proved we were way past that point when people started getting shot at because they had beards. When a little old lady got up and brazenly told John McCain, “Obama’s an Arab.” And while it may not be getting any worse, it sure isn’t getting any better. There is a stereotype now, that Islam is an inherently violent and white-people-hating religion. Which is simply not true. In fact, it startles me that on the one hand, people can say that anybody who accepts Jesus will be saved, and then turn right around and attack fellow acceptors of Jesus. It boggles the mind and startles the spirit, really.

But guess what? I’m guessing it’s going to take another century for that stereotype to exit the collective American psyche. Just like Jim Crow. Just like the stigma against Japanese people during WWII. Just like the prejudice against Catholics.

Not cool, America. Not cool.

This really is a square rock pool. It is one of several to be found on the rock ledge at the foot of the cliffs at Winspit in Dorset. It is one of several on this rock platform, scattered amongst the more variously shaped normal pools. All the pools are lined with a continuous coating of pink or bleached calcareous algae. They are fringed with red Coral Weed and provide a home to an assortment of gastropod molluscs and small fish.

However, the square rock pools are man-made and are evidence for the industrial history of the area. This is the site of a former quarry. The workings are mostly on the cliff top where you can still explore, with care, the cave like excavations. Large blocks of stone were at one time painstakingly hewn from the strata. The rock was too heavy to cart up the hill to the village. So cranes were constructed from old ships timbers and driftwood to lower the stone from the cliff top to the ‘beach’ below. Another set of cranes was built on the rock platform at the water’s edge to lower the stone into boats. The square pits were carved to hold the base of the main wooden post for these cranes.

Carts were used for transferring the stone from the foot of the cliff to the edge of the ledge. As you might imagine, this could be a bit tricky on a wet and slimy surface. In fact, this operation could only be undertaken in the summer months when conditions were more favourable. The carts were pulled by two men. To stop the carts slipping, over-turning, or going in the wrong direction and into the sea with the hard-earned cargo, two parallel ruts were carved in the rock to accommodate the wheels – a bit like tramlines. Two sets of these cart ruts can still be clearly seen.

Here are some more photographs of graffiti on the rainbow-coloured sandstone cliffs and beach boulders at Studland, Dorset. It seems like something inherent in human nature compels so many people to leave a souvenir of their visit inscribed in stone.

I do not think that anything could be done to stop people carving the rocks. I do not think there would be any point in trying to clean the rocks up. The natural flaking and peeling, weathering, and sea erosion of the stone surfaces tends to soften the affect of the carvings.

Actually, the carvings are so ubiquitous in this location that they seem part of the natural landscape – to the extent that most people probably do not even notice them. They do not detract from the beauty of the place.

There are some earlier posts with more pictures of the rocks and rock carvings at this place.
Okay I didn’t expect Vril Dox to get a Sinestro Corps ring at all! Bedard wove Blackest Night in with his own mega-story about Starro perfectly. Both people coming in for the Blackest Night stuff and previous readers will enjoy this issue. Clarke’s art is great to see again, let’s hope he stays around this time. I like that Vril’s son is now Brainiac 3. This was a good issue.

There’s something deep within the human psyche that drives people to leave their mark. Not so often to celebrate awe of nature, existence and survival, or contribute to ritual, as in the ancient cave paintings and carvings. More likely these days to simply say ‘I was here’; sometimes to make a declaration of affection; sometimes to express a creative urge.

It is clear that generation after generation of visitors to this particular site have recorded their presence by carving initials on the wonderful rainbow coloured sandstone of the cliffs and beach boulders. The engravings are layered one upon another in the stone. Natural processes of weathering and wear on the surface of the rock tend to smooth away or remove the older carvings over time – a kind of natural exfoliation or auto-cleaning – but there will probably always be new scratchings of graffiti to replace the old.

The natural colourings in the hardened iron-bearing sediments provide a fantastic multi-coloured canvass for the artists to work on. Some people have incorporated embedded geological features into their carvings. Despite the fact that the inscriptions are a ‘defacement’ of the rock strata, en masse they seem to have resulted in something of artistic merit – although I do not expect everyone to agree with that point of view.

We wszystkich wcześniejszych wpisach pojawia się słowo strata. Albo w kontekście idei LM jako eliminacji strat, albo czynnik zmniejszający zysk.

Co to właściwie jest?

Strata (z jap.

a) konieczne

A zanim eliminacja będzie możliwa trzeba je minimalizować.

1. Nadprodukcja
2. Zbędny ruch
3. Oczekiwanie
4. Zbędny transport
5. Zapasy
6. Wady
7. Nadmierna obróbka

Wonderful rock features and amazing colours characterise the cliffs near Middle Beach at Studland Bay, Dorset. Studland is best known for its long, unspoilt sandy beach which is popular with families, walkers, naturists and water sports enthusiasts. The incredible geology of the cliffs at the western end of the bay seems to receive less attention than it deserves.

In these posts I can merely draw attention to these fascinating rocks. On the dull autumn day that I photographed them, in the absence of direct sunlight and reflection, the colours seemed to be particularly vivid and intense. Every shade is exhibited from cream, through orange, to deep red and purple. The rocks mostly get their rainbow hues from the iron minerals in the strata. One person who has investigated and written in great detail about the geology of Studland and the rest of the Jurassic Coast is Ian West. For a full account of the geology of this area, I recommend that you visit Ian’s site by clicking here.

The geological features that particularly interested me on this visit, were the vertically aligned iron-lined tubes or ‘pipes’ embedded on the sandstone. These ‘pipes’ can be seen projecting upwards from the rocks beneath your feet on the beach; in vertical half-sections in broken boulders on the seashore; and also in the eroded cliff face. Holes of different sizes leading into ‘pipes’ can be seen all over the place. Sometimes, the pipes are hollow and empty; and other times they are filled with hardened sediment. The range of colours can be most varied around these ‘pipes’ as you will see from the photographs below.

When author F. Scott Fitzgerald famously stated that there were no second acts in American lives, he wasn’t referring to bread. Leftover bread sitting on the cutting board in our household often rises like a phoenix from the ashes. When my wife suggested that the crusty yeasted cornbread would be perfect for strata, a layered bread pudding, I thought it was a great idea. It freed us from the drudgery of thinking about “who would eat what” for dinner and it made room on the cutting board for the rosemary bread dough that was rising on the kitchen counter. Sometimes the solution to cooking for your kids is to throw tomato sauce at the problem. I thought that the sauce and cheese in the strata would conceal any alien or objectionable ingredients. I was also prepared if my son (can I have a smoothie, because I don’t want to eat what you put on my plate) and daughter (why can’t we just have pasta) joined forces and mounted an attack. If all else failed, I could counter-attack with a calzone left over from the dinner I made the night before—my ace-in-the-hole.

I adapted a recipe from Deborah Madison’s Vegetarian Cooking for Everyone as a springboard to jump off. I knew neither of my children would touch a mushroom, so I substituted some chard and threw in an ear of corn for good measure. Being an indecisive kinda guy and having plenty of cheese in the fridge, I chose to put Gorgonzola on one half and goat cheese on the other.

Strata

5 cloves of garlic

3 tablespoons of olive oil

1 28-ounce can crushed tomatoes

1 ear of corn

1 bunch of chard

4 eggs

2 cups of milk

10 slices of bread (I didn’t remove the crusts)

½ cup grated mozzarella

¾ cup crumbled goat cheese or Gorgonzola

Lightly butter or oil a 9 x 12 baking dish.

Warm 1 tablespoon olive oil in skillet and add minced garlic. Add the tomatoes and cook for about 20 minutes, stirring occasionally. Check to see if it needs to be seasoned with a little salt or pepper. Transfer to a dish. Heat the remaining olive oil before cooking chard and corn (or whatever you choose to add).

Beat the eggs and milk with ¼ teaspoon salt, and pepper to taste.

Spread tomato sauce in the baking dish. Cover with a layer of bread, followed by the vegetables and cheese. Add a second layer of bread and cover it with tomato sauce, followed by the vegetables, cheese, and additional sauce. Add a third layer of bread and cover with remaining sauce and cheese. Pour the custard over all. It can be baked right away or you can cover, refrigerate, and bake several hours later.

Pre-heat oven to 375° and bake until brown and puffed, about an hour. Let cool for five minutes before serving.

With its endless variations, strata is a dish that shouldn’t become stale. It might even become a staple in your household. My son, who keeps his distance from eggs, didn’t let his remark that it was too “eggy,” deter him from getting seconds. I thought it was “eggy” in a good, French toast kind of way. I heard my daughter telling my wife that it tasted like polenta. I am continually impressed by her ability to pick out some hidden or subtle ingredient or spice. I realized the next day that since I used polenta in the bread, of course it tasted like polenta.

For the third act, I ate the remaining strata for lunch.

Rozkład z dwunastu kart, jest takim mini odbiciem normalnego prawdziwego horoskopu, pierwsza karta to moja Ja, moja osoba, życie zdrowie, druga i każda kolejna w rozkładzie oznaczała kolejny astrologiczny dom w horoskopie.

Pierwsze myśli, natręctwo i niepokój, potem racjonalizacja. Przecież śmierć w kartach to jakaś transformacja, przemiana mojej osobowości, czegoś totalne zakończenie?

Gdy tuż przed pogrzebem weszłam do kostnicy żeby odebrać jej ciało, w ciemnym pomieszczeniu, stała tylko jedna trumna z moją mamą.

The listing Realtor has a general duty to be familair with property they are marketing. Strata lots are unique and require extra diligence. The process and cost of obtaining the necessary information is supplied to the owner but generally is not kept for any period of time. It is up to the listing Realtor to supply the proper documentation for all prospective buyers who request it.
If buying a Strata, your Realtor should be aware of the standard of care required to ensure that there are no surprises after the purchase. Expect volumes of information to read if you are serious in buying into a group situation like a Strata Corporation.

Adam Strange and Captain Comet join the cast just as the team officially forms – nine issues in. Oh well it was a fun ride getting there. (Unlike say Meltzer’s six issues to build the Justice League in 2006). Aubin’s art is not as good as Clarke’s and it shows. I wish that Clarke could stay on this book for any substantial amount of time. The team is interesting if not a little big. I hope people continue to read this cause I want to see more of their adventure.
