Ok, alla fine l’odissea è finita e l’ho messo su Youtube Non passerà certo alla storia e la gestazione è stata alquanto sofferta, più per problemi di tempo e tecnici che musicali. Poi mi sono incaponito nel voler fare la versione ’studio’ del brano e non quella ‘live’ (che ho suonato per anni) cercando addirittura di fare una specie di studio ‘filologico’ del brano; alla fine mi sono accorto di non averne le capacità né tecniche (sia di registrazione sia di esecuzione), né musicali Sopravviverò! L’ultimo solo è veramente un po’ ‘liberatorio’ e mi sono lasciato andare ed è venuto fuori qualcosa di vagamente blackmoriana sia nell’intenzione, sia nell’anarchico modo di eseguirlo; peccato che sia un po’ fuori contesto, cioé improvviso in uno stile blackmoriano degli anni ‘90 mentre il brano a cui faccio riferimento è del ‘76. Ma come dico spesso l’importante è divertirsi e far casino, no?

Dubbed “The test pilot of the Stratocaster,” Western swing legend Bill Carson was the guitarist for whom Leo Fender first created the six-string that would later define the sound of rock & roll. Born July 8, 1926, in Meridian, OK, Carson grew up in his grandparents’ Amarillo, TX, home. He first played the pump organ before acquiring an $11 guitar from the Sears and Roebuck catalog at age 11. In the years following World War II, Carson was a fixture of the local dancehall circuit, and circa 1948 he relocated to Los Angeles, playing in support of Western swing pioneers including Lefty Frizzell, Hank Thompson, and Spade Cooley. In 1951 he visited Fender’s Fullerton, CA, factory in search of a Telecaster electric guitar and amplifier. Fender not only obliged, but also convinced Carson to sign on as a part-time assembly worker and field tester. From that point forward Carson regularly played Fender prototypes during his gigs, suggesting a series of groundbreaking design elements and refinements. Famously telling Fender a guitar should fit the human body “like a well-tailored shirt,” he was instrumental in determining the contours that in 1954 resulted in the classic “cutaway” shape of the original Stratocaster. Carson’s official endorsement of the Strat was also vital in legitimizing the new instrument. In one famous advertisement, he stands in full cowboy regalia with the guitar slung over his shoulder, with an inset reading “Billy Carson Uses Fender Fine Electric Instruments Exclusively.” The likes of Jimi Hendrix, Buddy Holly, and Eric Clapton were among the myriad Stratocaster disciples to follow in his wake. Carson joined the Fender staff full-time in 1957, working as guitar supervisor and plant manager. A decade later, he was appointed to head the company’s Nashville office, and later spearheaded sales and marketing initiatives as well. In 1990, Carson achieved a different kind of notoriety when he cultivated a record-setting watermelon weighing in at 262 pounds, a Guinness Book of World Records mark that stood for 16 years. He also published a memoir, Bill Carson: My Life and Times with Fender Musical Instruments, and in 2006 his own 1959 Fiesta Red Stratocaster sold for a staggering $66,000 at auction. I’ve never modded a guitar before, but it’s a topic that has interested me for a long time. I’m looking at upgrading the pickups as well as doing a few cosmetic changes on my Squier by Fender Affinity Series Stratocaster as practice because it’s a relatively cheap instrument.

I’m confused about what to do for pickups. Fender makes so many different types that all sound appealing, but I don’t know what the differences between Vintage Noiseless, Custom Shop Texas Specials, and Hot Noiseless are. I’m also thinking about adding Fender Schaller Locking Tuners, an LSR Roller Nut, and a tortoise shell or pearloid white pickguard depending on the paintjob I decide on. I’m torn. I really dig the style shown in the upper-right corner, of an off-white with a tortoise pickguard, but I also like my other idea of a very light blue with black diagonal racing stripes going one way, then being opposed by white racing stripes going a different direction.

The project is still a while off, I’m still broke from buying my Fender Telecaster which I love dearly. I’m wondering about putting a bridge cover on it, for the cool vintage look. That’s a cheap, $20 or so upgrade that requires pretty much no work at all.

Je viens de poster une nouvelle vidéo sur mon site “l’ami des collectionneurs” qui propose des portraits en images de personnes passionnés de choses aussi diverses que les affiches de mai 68, les taille-crayons, les Dinky Toys, les photographies d’actualité ou les guitares. Cette fois, c’est justement un guitariste, Laurent Pradeau, qui est filmé au milieu de da collection d’instruments.

Pour finaliser la couleur, j’ai mixé deux pistes vidéos sur l’ensemble du film avec d’une part la vidéo clean, non retouchée, et sur une autre piste, une version étant passée part une dose de  flou gausssien sur les highlights puis par un filtre Bleach Bypass sur l’ensemble, le tout dans Color1.5. Voilà le résultat.

When constructing or upgrading a Strat, people often get lost when it comes to pick-ups and for good reason. There are all kinds of pick-ups out and it can difficult choosing the one that is going to work best for you. Before this process evens begins you need to know, there are many, high quality pick-ups available both online and in stores so don’t get too bent up if you can’t decide if the brand and model you picked out is the perfect combo. That said, you’re going to want to know what you want out of a pick up. You should decide first whether or not you want actives or passive pick-ups.

Actives require usually 1 9-volt battery to be housed inside the guitar in order to boost the signal of the instrument. This creates a louder guitar and sometimes a “fatter” tone but the trade-off is maintenance. Since most of us are not celebrity rockstars who have our strings and batteries changed each time before we play, replacing your battery can be the last thing you think of when something goes wrong with the signal. Passive signals seem to be standard. They require no internal power from the guitar. Minimal volume loss is made up by the low maintenance of never having to change your batteries because they’re not there. The body of the guitar has an extra cavity in order to house the battery so make sure you check your guitar before trying to install the actives. Making the change from actives to passives is possible through the use of new volume and tone pots. After that is figured out, you begin to narrow your choices.

Hot, Noiseless, 50’s, 60’s, Highway 1, Lace Sensors, Artist series, Humbuckers, the options are there! Decide whether or not you want the old school hum a single coil traditionally produces or if you want to go with something more smooth and modern. The best way to decide is to go to your local music store and play as many different pick-ups as you can and take note of which models you like and making this seemingly tedious decision rather fun.

Vi ricordate che stavo ‘moddando’ la mia Squier? Oggi, in uno dei rarissimi ritagli di tempo di questa settimana stracolma di impegni lavorativi, ho deciso di concludere il lavoro. Ho dovuto persino comprarmi un piccolo saldatore – va beh, costato 5 euro, pensavo molto di più – e tentare di usarlo; non sono mai stato bravo a saldare, ma sono un po’ uno zuccone e quindi…

Ok, non vincerò di certo il premio di ’saldatore dell’anno’, ma l’importante è che funzioni; funziona? Ehm, no! O meglio andava, ma c’era un certo ronzio e poi un pickup aveva il suono che andava e veniva: uffi! Lasciamo perdere le foto e rifacciamo le saldature come si deve: che stress!

Stavolta funziona tutto a dovere Per fortuna non avevo già rimesso le corde altrimenti… Ok, ora, grazie all’acquisto fatto presso un’utente di MusicOff, la mia infima Squier ha due pickups decenti: un Di Marzio 404 al manico e un DiMarzio 420 al ponte, tutte e due della serie Virtual Vintage Solo (già il nome è un programma!) Ho poi chiuso il tutto, montato le corde (più in fretta dell’ultima volta: che ci stia riprendendo la mano?) e fatto una veloce prova con Guitar Rig 4: ok, sono soddisfatto, la mia Squier ha perso in secchezza e plasticosità assumendo un suono più credibile, cattivo al ponte e più blueseggiante al manico, quello che volevo. Non funzionano i toni, devo aver fatto qualche casino nei collegamenti, ma visto che non li ho mai usati non è una gran perdita; il pickup al centro (quello che annego sempre nel battipenna), un Fender, fischia di brutto perché non paraffinato, ma anche questo non lo uso mai quindi mi importa poco, anzi, sto meditando di scollegarlo come fa Blackmore ed usare un selettore a 3 vie. Ma questo magari lo farò più avanti.

Direi che di questo brano c’è ben poco da dire se non che è stupendo anche se non è il solito hard-rock da me frequentato nelle scorribande chitarristiche precedenti. Chi non vuole sorbirsi la mia solita tititera iniziale deve andare direttamente al minuto 4:47. Buon ascolto!

Non mi riferisco tanto al nuovo brano in preparazione (sarà uno shock visto che è lontano anni luce da tutto quello che ho fatto ascoltare sinora), ma al fatto che la mia nuova Squier avrà, appena trovo il tempo, una nuova serie di pickups. Trovato sul forum di MusicOff un utente che vendeva un battipenna di una Stratocaster un po’ più pompato dei pickups di serie della mia Squier nera e non ho saputo resistere. Ci siamo accordati ed è arrivato un bel pacco-bomba (l’ho ricevuto a scuola in classe ed i ragazzi, incuriositi, l’hanno soprannominato così). Ecco cosa c’era fuori dal cartone.

Se qualcuno non avesse ancora capito girandolo viene svelata la natura dell’oggetto.

Fuori dall’imballaggio si vede ancora meglio; sicuramente cambiero questo battipenna bianco, anche se non è male, e lo sostituirò con il battipenna che ho già, quello mint green un po’ invecchiato; sembra facile, ma è un lavoraccio!

Considerando che non ho più il saldatore, la vedo dura districarmi in mezzo a tutti questi fili: speriamo bene!

The Peavey is my first ever guitar, but I modded her quite a bit. Beyond the obvious – the polka dots I added – there are also three new Seymour Duncan pickups, including a hot rails in the bridge.

Visto che oggi è Halloween (festa che odio perché non è una nostra tradizione e come al solito ci lasciamo ‘intortare’ dimenticando altre festività più nostre) ho deciso, molto in sordina, di farvi un bel regalino da ‘Festa dell’orrore’: un pseudo-blackmoriano che suona Satriani ovvero una mission impossible. Stavolta l’introduzione non è demenziale come l’altra volta, perciò chi la volesse saltare basta andare al minuto 3.50
Mi auguro che nessuno, dopo l’ascolto, abbia la voglia di prendere la propria chitarra e… magari picchiarmela in testa

Just last week, I received 2 inexpensive guitars from Rondo music. After reading so many comments about rondo on teh various forums and review sites, I figured I’d give them a try. The idea was to buy SX guitars for one of the reason that most people buy them – either as a starter guitar or to modify them into something more.

I bought them for the latter.

I couldn’t decide on the cheap Telecaster copy or the cheap Stratocaster copy so i bought one of each. Considering I still didn’t pay half as much as I spent on my Epiphone LP standard, I’m feeling pretty good about it.

Ill post my impression of each and plans later but here’s links to the two that I picked up:

First is the SX STL50 Vintage White for $109
and the other is the SX SST Ash RN 3TS at $129

I may look like I’m just repeating what so many other Rondo lovers out there post – but I’m quite impressed with what arrived. They are inexpensive guitars with inexpensive components and this was expected. The setup on both were “decent” out of the box and there were no issues that made me want to send either of them back.

It’s also worth noting that I emailed Kurt from from on two occasions and both time he responded quickly and helpfully..

Anyway.. more to come on these..

Monday saw the launch of Biffy Clyro’s latest offering, no not their new single, it was the launch of their signature guitars.

Fender Squier have released the Simon Neil Signature Stratocaster and  the Fender Squier James Johnston Jazz Bass both of which are based on 60s relics.

Band front man, Simon Neil was thrilled to be approached by Fender, who describe the band as “part of the Fender family”.  Jokingly he commented,

“We have been asking for years to try and get a signature guitar.”

The process of bringing the custom built relics to life began just before the band started recording their newest album, 5th studio release, Only Revolutions, which is due for release on the 9th November 2009.

“For us it was getting the best possible guitar for a reasonably cheap  price. Basically we tried to make them as lovely as the relics we use. We have used these guitars live and they sound amazing.”

The custom relic guitars are a replicas of what lead singer Simon Neil and bassist James Johnston uses on stage.

Neil Whitcher, a representative from Fender UK commented,

“We were working on some Squier instruments and brought some prototypes down and started  chasing them round various dressing rooms. We finally got them some sample instruments and then we took it from there, made a few tweaks, matched some colours, got some logos and here we are.”

Front man Simon Neil could not contain his excitement adding,

“We are delighted. It is such an honour for fender to ask us – and my very first guitar was a Squier, so it has come full circle.

El aliso es una de las maderas más usadas en la construcción de cuerpos de guitarras y bajos eléctricos debido a su poco peso (aproximadamente 2 kilos en un típico cuerpo ”stratocaster”) y sus buenas características sonoras. Se trata de una madera procedente de un árbol bastante común, sobre todo en América del Norte (lugar de procedencia de muchas compañías de fabricación de instrumentos) y de ahí su bajo precio. Pero no hay que asimilar precio bajo con un mal material. Por ejemplo, el aliso es uno de los materiales más usados por Fender en la fabricación de sus instrumentos, y Fender ha demostrado ser una muy buena marca hasta el momento.

Si bien no destaca en ningún registro sonoro su sonido es altamente equilibrado, con unsa buena dosis de graves, medios y agudos por lo que se convierte en un buen material para muchos estilos distintos. Estéticamente tiene un color claro con pocas o ninguna veta profunda en la madera. Aunque a través de algunos lijados y demás se puede remarcar esta veta por cuestiones estéticas

El aliso se usa tanto para la fabricación de cuerpos como para tapas por lo liso que es. Queda muy bien con un acabado tipo “sunburst” (un color que degrada en negro) o un color solido. Sin embargo, el aliso no se usa para la fabricación de mástiles ni diapasónes.

Estos son algunos ejemplos de guitarras que tienen cuerpos de aliso, destacando la Fender Stratocaster hecha bajo las especificaciones de Billy Corgan (guitarrista y vocalista de los Smashin Pumpkins).

Nos complace comunicaros que, como novedad,  tenemos disponibles los productos Klein Pickups USA. Klein S5 Scooped Midrange

-S1 High Output A5:  para los que directamente buscais el sonido de la SRV nº1. Alnico V para las piezas polares para una gran respuesta en frecuencias bajas y gran presencia. (Mástil: 6.9k, central: 6.9k , puente: 7.3k).

-S7 Special EJ: tono de finales de los 50/principios de los 60. Las pastillas del mástil y central utilizan Alnico III, mientras que la pastilla del puente está fabricada con Alnico V. (Mástil: 5.85k, central: 5.95k,  puente: 6.85k).

-S8 DG Special: buscando el tono de la Fender Black Stratocaster de Gilmour?. Las pastillas del mástil y central utilizan Alnico V y la central incorpora un sobrebobinado al estilo finales de los ‘60. La pastilla del puente utiliza Alnico II y tambien está sobrebobinada para una mayor entrega de señal. (Mástil: 5.5k, central: 6.1k, puente: 13.0k).

-Stratocaster bridge P90 pickup: esta pastilla tiene suficiente fuerza y potencia para ser considerada una P90. Las salida es de 8.25k con una placa de alumino en la base (aumento de un 10%).

Por si no os han parecido suficientes las opciones que ofrece Klein Pickups tambien puedes configurar tu set bajo tus especificaciones: buscas obtener una gran salida o por el contrario quieres el tono clásico y cristalino de las pastillas de baja salida?. Tres tipos de cable para el bobinado y cuatro grados de piezas polares. Añade una placa de aluminio a la pasitilla del puente para comprimir las freuencas medias e incrementar la potencia en un 10%. Algo más specífico?: Más respuesta en frecuencias medias?. Más ataque y punch?. Compresion más suave?…o incluso configura tu set “Tapped” con tus dos especificaciones preferidas: indica las dos potencias de salida, Alnico 2,3,4 o 5, tipo de bobinado: Formvar, Enamel, Poly…

La mitica Fender Stratocaster di Jimi Hendrix, dal passato molto controverso, è tornata sul mercato dopo che i due attuali proprietari hanno deciso di venderla. I proprietari chiedono  $ 500.000.

Questa chitarra “vintage” del 1967 è una di quelle che furono modificate per essere utilizzata da Hendrix, mancino.

La storia (o la leggenda) dice che Hendrix diede come dono la chitarra a James “Tappy” Wright (che allora faceva parte dello staff di Jimi, ma che in origine era stato il road manager dei The Animals) verso la fine del 1968 o all’inizio del 1969.

Insieme alla chitarra viene fornito un video di Tappy in cui descrive la chitarra e la sua storia, una lettera in cui si dichiara la provenienza, una lettera e la foto di Carmine Appice (batterista dei Vanilla Fudge) ed altre certificazioni. Attualmente è in esposizione presso la Hall of Fame dei musicisti a Nashville (è stata in mostra anche a Parigi, presso la Cité de la Musique).

Tutto cominciò nel 2001, quando i proprietari misero all’asta su eBay la chitarra. Fu allora che Janie Hendrix e la Experience Hendrix LLC rivedicarono la proprietà della chitarra con una causa presso la Corte Suprema della Contea  di San Diego. La motivazione fu che la chitarra non era di Jimi o che era stata rubata.

Dopo sette anni, due giudizi della Corte e numerosi appelli, si è decisa un concordato per una cifra che non è stata rivelata ed in cambio la Hendrix Experience rinuncerà ad ogni suo diritto sulla chitarra.

Gli attuali proprietari della Stratocaster, Greg Dorsett di San Diego e l’inglese David Brewis, hanno dichiarato di aver aquistato la chitarra da Tappy Wright nel 1999 per $ 60.000.
