“For decades, scores of doctors, government officials, journalists, and others have extolled the benefits of psychiatric medicines for children.

GENERATION RX presents “the rest of the story” and unveils how this era of unprecedented change in Western culture really occurred -

and what price has been paid by our society.” source: Generation Rx

It’s really a powerful movie – shocking and real, yet we let this abuse of medicine continue.

Maybe one day we’ll return to society’s roots of caring for our children.

Parents need to have second opinions and other options presented to them before giving the green light for

their children to become drug addicts.

Communities need to become better advocates for children in foster care, and those who live in underprivileged environments,

because they become easy targets for powerful drug companies.

With 6 million children in the U.S. on psychiatric medications, society will be on-edge.

And finally, the act of diagnosing a 2-year-old with bi-polar disorder is not only barbaric, but insane!

Motiverad, tänd, uppe i varv.

Yesterday I had my first psychiatrist appointment. I’d put myself into almost a panic just thinking about it. I was so uncertain of what it would be like. What would be the test? What if the doctor said I didn’t have ADD? Then what is the problem? What if I didn’t like her? What if… what if?

It was fine. She was warm and kind and put me at ease immediately. She gave me a test to take, which I answered quickly and it was obvious from my responses that ADD was the diagnosis. She asked me a barrage of questions- many of which brought up some old pain that I’m still processing this morning.

She prescribed Strattera, and I’ve taken my first pill this morning at 10:45. It’s a momentous occasion for me. No fireworks, but definitely important. This is the first day of a long period of medication. I don’t know how long it will last, or if I’ll stay with this particular med. I’ve been anxious about it all week as I wondered how it would change me, or if it would really do any good. I worry about losing myself- my creative ways. The doctor assures me that if I do start to feel this way, then we’ll switch medicine. I searched online last night about the medicine, and read all about other people’s side effects. Wrong thing to do. I’m nervous now about all these possibilities. Right now I’m just trying to keep all that our of my mind and focus on the positive aspects of this step. And what happens to others won’t necessarily happen to me.

Off to take the kids to school for a board meeting. Keeping an eye on me while I take care of everyone else.

What to do?

Every angel is a little bit devil and every miracle pill is a little bit poison. My warning of the day is about AD/HD medications. AD/HD is often treated with powerful amphetamines or amphetamine-like drugs. Now I’m not one of those folks you’ll find ranting that “our children are being drugged..” etc, however I believe the side effects of these drugs are underestimated and their long-term effects are only now beginning to be studied. AD/HD is a real condition, not just an entity invented to justify a lack of discipline in children raised by inattentive parents, as some people assume. Amphetamines can help those children (and adults) who actually have the disorder, but this comes with a cost. Amphetamines make some pretty wild things happen in the brain. I believe they cause permanent changes that can lead to permanent worsening of AD/HD symptoms when they are withdrawn. I also beleive that they can permanently disorder the stimulus-seeking parts of the brain, causing bizarre cravings and obsessional behavior. Newer non-amphetamine drugs like Strattera are much less likely to cause problems but they are also less effective and don’t have the immediate effects of amphetamines like Ritalin and Adderall.

If you are taking these drugs talk with your doctor about any changes in behavior or mood and don’t let him dismiss your symptoms just because they haven’t made it into the drug company’s literature yet.

Here he is with his Daddy, my husband, Jeff.

After explaining to the child psychiatrist that the Strattera (atomoxetine) did somewhat lessen Sage’s hyperactivity but altered his personality, she immediately said to discontinue its use. When we first decided to use Strattera in early March, the doctor said the side effects may include depression, insecurity and mood swings so we needed to closely monitor him.

Sure enough, shortly after Sage started the doses, his kindergarten teachers began to recognize he was more argumentative and just not his sweet, happy self most of the time. At home, he started crying for no reason. We thought he just needed to adjust to the new medication. But after two months, and one dosage increase, we knew it wasn’t the right treatment for him.

A little to our surprise, the doctor readily agreed. She said the typical steps of treating ADHD and autism spectrum disorders include first trying stimulants like Ritalin and then antidepressants like Straterra. If those don’t work or have negative side effects (Ritalin use was stopped after a couple of days due to aggression), the next step is Risperidone or Risperdal.

Risperdal is an atypical antipsychotic drug used to treat bipolar disorder in adults and autistic disorders in children. The doctor explained that it is used in children with Pervasive Development Disorder-Not Otherwise Specified, or PDD-NOS. Sage was diagnosed with PDD-NOS in 2005 when he was 3 ½ and the child psychiatrist he is seeing now recently reaffirmed the diagnosis.

All these medical terms get confusing to me, to the point while I was asking the doctor questions, I confused her. She explained that patients with PDD-NOS have characteristics of those with classic autism, but not all. Impulsivity and hyperactivity are common characteristics. I did know that.

What I remained confused about was why Sage was not diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome, a high-functioning disorder similar to autism. In 2005, specialists at the University of Iowa Children’s Hospital could not diagnose him with Asperger’s because he was not verbal enough at the time. I assumed that was still the case, but his current doctor said he was too communicative to have Asperger’s. He can carry on a conversation and look you in the eye – which is typically lacking in those with Asperger’s or classic autism. That was good to know.

So tonight we begin the new regimen. The biggest side effect is drowsiness so we will give him a small dose with supper. After a week, we will add a morning dose to the evening one and see how that goes.

I’ve been having a pretty discouraging last week or so at work. Finally yesterday, I told my husband I felt like I just couldn’t think, let alone do anything on my task list. He finally pointed out something very obvious and very true.. I hadn’t eaten lunch! Of course my brain couldn’t focus on anything, it didn’t have any fuel. I had been off my strattera for a little while and whenever I get back on my appetite takes a nose dive, meaning I need to force myelf to eat regular sized meals, even if they are on the small side. So today, I was starting to hit that “I’m completely useless” feeling, and I just forced myself to eat my lunch. Slowly, but I ate it. Thankfully my lunch was a large chicken breast. Perfect. Lots of protein helps alot with ADHD. Lo and behold, my day turned around right about then. Thank the Lord for a dear husband who points such small yet important details!

But while we’re on the topic… a couple nutrition hints. As I said before, lots of protein. Another thing you want to make sure to work into your diet is Omega-3s. There’s a couple ways you can do this. There are, of course, dietary supplements you can take, but there are much tastier methods that will definitely increase your hippie cred. You could eat salmon every day, but that doesn’t fit my budget at all. Try adding flaxseed oil to your cooking. I put about a tablespoon in yogurt and then top it with hemp plus granola which has omega-3s and protein. It’s actually much, much tastier than it sounds. My favorite snack during the day is soy flaxseed tortilla chips from Trader Joe’s. They’re delicious and keep me well fueled with all the nutrients I need, not just mere calories to run on.

But most of all, just eat lunch.

Except for any residual depakote that may be hiding around my body, the drug should now be pretty much gone from my system. And I feel great. Really great – but not too great as we mental folks like to say. I almost feel guilty about how, well, normal I feel after what was really a relatively quick drug taper – a little over a year to get off five psych meds. There are people who’s blogs that I follow who have been tapering since before I started and are still fighting with withdrawal and illness. It breaks my heart when I read their updates. The fact that they remain optimistic in the face of what is a terrible experience which caps the horrifying experience of being in what passes for today’s mental health systems makes me hopeful that they will succeed and feel as well as I do.

Gianna from Beyond Meds has been a personal inspiration. It was her blog that I found when I was struggling with the failure of the medications to control the symptoms of a bipolar II diagnosis. A diagnosis that I had lost faith in. I had been taking Depakote, clonazepam, Lexapro, Strattera and trazadone for five years by this point along with brief dalliances with Risperdol, Remeron, Lamictal, Xanax, Ativan and Provigil. All this to cope with what I now believe was a seriously bad trip on Cymbalta. I had gone to see a psychiatrist about a reoccurring major depression. After a five minute visit he prescribed Cymbalta which in three weeks time put me into a dysphoric mania. I was bat shit insane – having visions, screaming, beating my head into a wall. And I was still deeply depressed, go figure. A emergency visit to a new psychiatrist got me labeled with a diagnosis of bipolar II and ramped up to 1,500 mg of Depakote ER in three days. Those of you who are familiar with this drug are saying to yourself, “That’s insane!” And you’d be correct. No one should be taking 1,500 mg out of the gate. I basically became a sleeping drooling vegetable, dead to the world for 14 – 16 hours a day, my mind in a barely penetrable fog. I couldn’t read. I could barely write. My friends and family were happy that I was getting help but were noticing that I wasn’t acting like myself. No one, including me, thought that the doctor might be wrong. We all bought into the conventional thinking on mental illness.

It took almost a year to the day that I started taking Depakote for my mind to finally clear. Even then I was sleeping 10 – 12 hours each night, forgetting names, places, memories, words, how to spell. My digestive system was out of wack. Constantly bloated, constipated, I managed to go from 155 to 180 lbs in eight weeks but was lucky that the weight leveled off. I have met many people who have gained over a hundred pounds on this and other mood stabilizers. Even with popping stool softeners, drinking gallons of water and watching what I ate, a particularly bad attack of constipation tore up my lower intestines, requiring four weeks of bed rest and surgery. I have never experienced such pain.

I had other fun side effects as well. Lexapro had me jaw clenching. I broke three molars and had to get crowns. Lamictal tried to kill my liver. I started having panic attacks which required medical attention. I had fainting spells – once I woke up half-under a parked car in the middle of the winter. I was exhausted all the time. My sex drive become a memory. I lost my creativity and on and on.

Through all of this my original complaint, the deep soul killing depressions continued to get worse. None of the medications that I was given could contain it. Risperdol and Remeron made my symptoms worse and gave me even more horrifying ones. More weight gain, despair, anxiety. The depressions became more frequent and more hopeless. My psychiatrist gave up on me and stopped seeing me as a patient. He couldn’t help me. My therapist referred me to another doctor who changed my life. This doctor listened to my story without judgement. He listened to my concerns, my fears, he wanted to know what was and had been happening in my life. Each meeting was an hour, not the standard 15 minutes. I had to pay a $126 dollar copay each visit but it was worth it. When I nervously approached him about the possibility of tapering off all of the meds he was very positive and gave me examples of other patients who were living successfully without meds. He gave me hope, let me make my own decision and made sure that I knew that we could always try other medications if need be.

So, it’s been almost two weeks since I took the last pill. With each taper, after an initial dip into depression, I have felt stronger and less tired. My thoughts are clearer. I do experience continued anxiety which I cope with through exercise and a kind of walking meditation. I also avoid stimulants.

So what is wrong with me? Why the depressions? I believe it stems from a childhood living with a verbally and mentally abusive father, his eventual suicide, experiencing violence for coming out as gay, a rape, and trying to live a life that wasn’t authentic to who I am. The pills made it difficult, if not impossible, to deal effectively with these issues. I continue to struggle with them, I’d be lying if I said that I wasn’t. But I can feel the pain now. I can think with a mind not dampened by medication. I can reason once again and I hope to deal with things as they happen and move on.

For this chance I am truly grateful.

I want to take a moment and personally thank everyone who has contacted me and commented constructively on this blog. You will never know how much your words have strengthen me and given me the courage to see things to this point. Now I venture forward into this next chapter of my life feeling hopeful. Thank you for giving me that hope. I expect that now my posts will turn to focusing on healing rather than on dealing with side effects.

Peace.

25.01.09
