We are thankful for so many things it’s hard to narrow down the list. Here are the top 10 things we’

We are thankful for so many things it’s hard to narrow down the list. Here are the top 10 things we’re thankful for this season:

1.) CHARDONNAY
Santa Maria Valley is known throughout the wine community as one of the top AVAs for premium Chardonnay. Whether you prefer Chardonnay aged in oak or stainless steel, you can find a Chardonnay that’s right for you. Our goal is to prove that during The Chardonnay Symposium, slated for July 2010. Follow our blog for the latest developments.

2.) PINOT NOIR
We can’t get enough of the balanced Pinots from the SMV. There are a variety of styles throughout the area but one quality is found throughout Santa Maria Valley Pinot Noirs; they are food friendly. For many wine drinkers, wine is a part of daily life and enjoyed with dinner. It’s for this very reason that we are so proud of our food friendly wines. Occasionally you’ll find a wine that should be enjoyed on its own but most of our Pinots are extremely complimentary of a variety of foods, especially Thanksgiving Turkey. Need more ideas for Thanksgiving food and wine pairings? Check out this post by food and wine expert Laura Mohseni.

3.) EXPERIMENTATION
Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Syrah may be the most popular varietals in Santa Maria but our winemakers love to experiment with many different varietals. Take Ken Volk, for example. It has been said that he works with as many as 60 different varietals. At any given time he can be selling wines made with 2 dozen different grapes. If you’re a big fan of obscure wines visit his tasting room and try wines such as the Cabernet Pfeffer.

4.) GROWTH
The Santa Maria Valley Wine Country is growing. We’re so happy to welcome CORE wine company’s new tasting room to the wine trail. Stay tuned throughout the year for news about Presqu’ile Winery off of Clark Ave (not yet open to the public). They have big plans for their future label and we can’t wait to try their wine. We’re also excited that Wine Country, the popular wine, beer and cigar tasting room from Los Olivos will be moving to Orcutt. Check this blog throughout the next year for news about all of the new wineries and tasting rooms in Santa Maria.

5.) HOLIDAY DISCOUNTS
The best discount of the season is probably the Wine Christmas Passport. Not only do you save up to 70% off of wine tasting fees but we’re giving away raffle tickets for every 2 bottles of wine that you purchase for the holidays (or for your wine cellar).

Another quick and affordable way to buy holiday gifts is to purchase a case of wine (and reap the reward of the case discounts offered by most wineries). Some wineries go beyond the average 10% discount and make a case discount impossible to pass up. Stop by Cottonwood Canyon on Black Friday and save 50% on case purchases of 2003 Bistro Zinfandel and Non-Vintage Bistro Chardonnay!

6.) COMMUNITY
One of the best reasons to live in Santa Maria, besides the great wine, is the community. Santa Marians support each other like one giant family. We are thankful for all of the support we have received from both businesses and individuals throughout the valley. In order to give back to our community, we have decided to give a portion of proceeds from our events (Wine Christmas Passport, The Chardonnay Symposium) to the Marian Foundation and the Blochman Union School District (the wine country’s school district).

7.) LOCATION LOCATION LOCATION
The Santa Maria Valley is only one of two East-West transverse valley on the whole west coast of North and South America, making it one of the most unique AVAs in the world. The transverse orientation accentuates cooling maritime influences from the Pacific Ocean, creating an average temperature of 64 degrees, with high temperatures rarely reaching above 75. Because the Valley is situated at its particular southerly latitude, an extended growing season (125 days on average) allows Santa Maria Valley to produce intensely high quality fruit.

8.) EVENTS
Nearly every weekend there are a variety of winery events to attend. There are Friday Night Wine Downs at Costa de Oro and Cottonwood Canyon, special food and wine pairings at Riverbench, art shows at McKeon-Phillips, “Bring your own burger” nights at CORE wine company, farmer’s markets at Cambria and much, much more. For a complete list of events in the wine country visit the SMVWINES calendar.

9.) FRESH, LOCAL PRODUCE
There are numerous ways to pick up fresh produce for the holidays (or for any meal). There is a Farmer’s Market at Town Center West across from the Santa Maria Town Center Mall (Broadway near Main Street) on Wednesdays from 12:30-4:30pm and in Orcutt on Bradley and Clark on Tuesdays from 10am-1pm.

Did you know? Santa Maria produces 10 million boxes of strawberries annually, which are transported to supermarkets all across the United States.

For juicy Santa Maria strawberries check out Darren’s Berries on the corner of Stowell and Highway 101’s northbound exit. You can buy them by the flat or half-flat. Don’t wash them until you’re ready to eat them and keep them spread out in an airtight container. That way they’ll last at least a week (or more)–IF you can refrain from eating them all in two days. Better yet, make strawberry jam for the winter months!

Check out this blog post about Santa Maria Strawberries.

10.) SOCIAL MEDIA
Social media has allowed us to reach out to fans of SMV wines throughout the world. We love hearing from you and sharing what we’re learned with you. There are so many ways to be involved with wine online. We’re planning on starting monthly online wine tastings in 2010 (stay tuned) as a way to share our wines with those across the globe. You can also keep in touch with us through Facebook, Twitter, You Tube, Flickr, Snooth, Open Wine Consortium, and many more wine websites.
Q: In your new Strawberry Companion Beds, why are chives and borage planted with strawberries?

A: Chives are pest repellent to keep pests away from the strawberries. They are also edible. Chives will spread but they tend to be balanced by the spreading of the strawberries. Borage is an attractant for beneficial insects as well as an edible flower.

Q: In your new Asparagus Companion Beds, why are alyssum and dill planted with asparagus?

A: Dill is an attractant for beneficial insects. Alyssum is also an attractant as well as good ground cover for suppressing weeds.

Just can’t wait to let out a good poop? There are a couple of common household items/ingredients that will do the job for you! Here is a list of great laxatives:

Foods high in fiber; Mayo Clinic has a great list of these kinds of foods. You know they say that “an apple a day will keep the doctor away,” it really is true! You can fight that bloated feeling by eating foods high in fiber regularly.

Juices, such as apple juice and pear juice, will help fight constipation.

Coffee, we all should know, is a natural laxative. This is because of the high caffeine content in coffee, which relaxes your bowels. Voila! Let it out!

Cigarettes (if you smoke, of course) are also a great laxative. I know that sometimes I need to put out my cigarette in order to make it to the bathroom in time!

Water, which makes up about 70 percent of your body, needs to be ingested regularly to avoid constipation. Water is a necessity of life, and without it, a huge affect is constipation.

Ginger, a root sold in most grocery stores, also helps your digestive system.

Cayenne Pepper is a good laxative that most people have in their house.

Nuts, such as almonds, help your digestive system. If you are trying to lose weight, almonds also fight hunger.

These common household items will be sure to cure your constipation and clean out your body! If you still have issues, you probably should go see a doctor ASAP. Constipation may be a side effect of an illness or pregnancy.

“The food you eat can be either the safest and most powerful form of medicine, or the slowest

“The food you eat can be either the safest and most powerful form of medicine, or the slowest form of poison”. Dr. Ann Wigmore, N.D

I kind of agree with this quote although I love baked foods. Generally speaking I try to eat healthy, replace anything ‘white’ with ‘brown’ (flour, sugar) and choose low fat dairy products. However, I do agree that raw food has its benefits including higher nutrient value and digestive enzymes that aid digestion. The only ‘raw’ dessert that I make is Tiramisu which is actually my favourite. I came across this great recipe on Ina’s website who has lots of raw/vegan recipes and also takes great pictures. Traditionally, macaroons are made either with coconut and egg white or with a coarse almond paste formed into a dense cookie or confection. Not to be confused with French macarons which are completely different in appearance.

If you like coconut, you will definitely enjoy this delicious recipe. Very easy to make. You’ll need a food dehydrator which you can later use to make healthy natural snacks like dried fruit and veggies, but also jerky, homemade herbs and spices. You can find it at your local Walmart, The Bay or Canadian Tire. Make sure you know what it looks like as many people are not very familiar with it. Ironically, it is posted under ‘Crafts and Hobbies’ category on Walmart’s website which is partly true, but common, in the end it is a kitchen appliance!

Strawberry Macaroons – makes approx. 20

1/3 cup pitted dates
1 1/2 cup strawberries, fresh or frozen and thawed
1/4 cup agave or honey
1 Tablespoon vanilla extract, or 1 vanilla bean, scraped
2 cups shredded coconut

Place dates, strawberries, agave or honey, and vanilla in your food processor. Process into a puree. Add coconut, and process to mix well. Using an ice cream spoon make small balls and place them in the dehydrator. Leave them dry for approx. 4 hours or until they are crisp on the outside and soft inside. They make a unique gift for your friends and/or family. Enjoy!

In the second round, Ms Bligh, Olympic swimmer Eamon Sullivan and actor Simon Westaway were tasked with recreating a crispy duck dish made famous by Sydney chef Kylie Kwong.

Ms Bligh might know how to handle herself when the political knives are out, but in this challenge she struggled – first to cut the neck off the duck and then to julienne the vegetables. Her downfall was deep-frying the duck for too long.

In the end, Sullivan won the heat.

Ms Bligh has been widely criticised for taking part in the program.

It’s like 30F out there, at 7am on a Saturday and where am I? At the grocery store wondering what I’ll have for breakfast. I move over to the fruits section, grab a box of fresh strawberries and as I try to scan the rest of the fruits on display, to see what else I can pair the strawberries with, I see this…

Kiwano, it says. A ki-what-now? This thing looks deadly with its spikes but I gotta admit it got the best of me when I grabbed one thinking, I’ve got to at least give it a try. I had no idea what I’m in for with this strange looking mutant but for 4 buck a pop, it’s gotta be good, I thought.

Back home, I jump on the web to try to find out what the story is! What it is, where it came from, who’s had it before and if there’s a chance it might be good with strawberries. Well, first I learn that it’s a melon, a horned melon (Say what?) and it’s of African origin. Fine, I thought. Now, I go to the kitchen and slice it open…

Not wanting to taste it yet, I bring the plate into the study and continue to read blogs of people who’s had it before. Not a whole lot has had it, I discover. Worse, none of those who’s had it had anything good to say, either. Great!! Now, only one way to find out, for sure. So finally, I scoop out a chunk with a spoon. It was gooey, gelatinous and akward with seeds I’m not sure are edible. If they’re not, it would be bad. I mean, why bother when the seeds are what most of the fruit itself consists of. Anyway, moment of truth! I take a bite and all I can say is…

OMG!!!!

All I can think of is… you gotta be kidding me! Almost flavorless and whatever hint of flavor it has wasn’t even fruit-like. And the seeds! The seeds! You really want to spit them out but it’s impossible to do. I mean, you might as well not eat the fruit at all, y’know! Which, evidently, wasn’t such a bad idea at this point. It was 4 bucks down the drain but, oh well. At least, there’s one less fruit I have to decide on, next time.

Glad to, at least, have the strawberries around to please my morning palate and save the day.

A little drizzle of lemon juice, some lemon zest, chopped mint to garnish and a drizzle of pure maple syrup. Ahh… now, that’s redeeming!

After a busy week full of smoothies, oatmeal, and other quick grabs, I like to make a larger breakfast on Saturdays and/or Sundays if I’m up in time.

This morning, I made blueberry scones and finished up the last of the strawberries and blueberries.

I confess, these scones were processed food. I found canned scones at the health food store last week. I had never seen scones in cans before, so I had to try them. This is definitely an example of a food you can find at the health food store that isn’t healthy. They are definitely a treat!

While they baked, I cut up the strawberries, then relaxed while they finished cooking. They smelled delicious!

Time: This meal takes longer than most of my other breakfasts, but it was still really easy. The scones baked for 20 minutes, but total prep time (including the fruit) was less than five minutes. So if you want to eat this on a work day, just pop them in the oven while you finish getting ready.

Cost: A bit more expensive due to the scones. I actually have no idea how much they cost, but I know they weren’t cheap. Definitely an indulgence that will only occur on rare/special occasions.

Taste: Omg, completely delicious. I put my scone on a plate and shoved the rest in the freezer once I took a bite, scared that I would go back in and eat the whole batch. I ate the scone first and then the fruit to clear my palate (I find that drinking water or eating something else after eating something sweet helps stop the cravings for more) along with the tea. I enjoyed every last bite of these. I highly recommend if you can handle the cost and the temptation.

I drank a cup of tea with it. Very satisfying! The huge pile of fruit I had kept me from overeating the scones. (It does take some discipline if you are junk food addict like me!) A bigger breakfast than usual, but scones are pretty dense. Between the fat in the scones and the fiber in the fruit, quite filling.

Off to take a walk. I’m trying to beat the rain! We shall see!

I figure you’ve all seen a whole lot of Vegan For a Day, so I switched my title up with a little español.

Shocker, I know.

Before I get to jueves, tengo una pregunta:

Have you entered my Nutridel giveaway?

No? Probablemente you should do that today.

Porque those galletas are DELISH.

And also FREE! For what more could you wish?

Now that I’ve gotten that hankering for un poco self-promotion and poetry out of my system, let’s discuss ayer.

I rolled out my yoga mat, fixed a cup of coffee and plopped down to tackle my Google Reader.

(You’ll notice I didn’t mention any yoga acción. This is because none occurred. You see, I’m a little obsessed with the yoga mat I won from Erica. So, sometimes, on mornings like yesterday when I have no intention of actually doing yoga, I bust it out just to lay/read because it makes me feel relaxed and productive. Yo sé, I’m weird.)

Within seconds of opening my Reader, I learned of Vegan For a Day and was immediately intrigued.

Intrigued, but not sold.

So I sipped some (coincidentally) vegan-friendly coffee as I looked to some of my favorite vegan bloggers for affirmation.

You can spy a little OhSheGlows action behind coffee cup numero dos.

And it was actually Angela’s A.M. post—specifically the fact that she’d be posting her meals and me encanta the way that chica eats—that convinced me to go Vegan Por Un Día.

Veganism has always seemed entirely doable for me; but it’s never seemed desirable. It’s seemed doable in the sense that I have very strong will-power, and I’m a very competitive person. So, if I commit to something, I commit. However, it’s never seemed desirable because I love food. And a lot of the foods I love fall into non-vegan terrain. I so admire all of the vegans and vegetarians that commit to these dietary lifestyles for their ethical and social importance—but I’m not sure I could ever make the commitment.

That said, I figured one day of veganism—even if I hated it—was nada in the long run. Plus, like I said, I love a little competición.

I partook in a several ridiculous Google searches in an effort to come up with vegan breakfast.

I got lost in that for about 30 minutes—but still had no idea what I wanted.

Actually, I knew exactly what I wanted.

Greek yogurt with melted banana and granola.

But since Greek yogurt is, you know, dairy—that was a no-no.

While I waited to be struck by vegan brilliance, I decided to go for the melted “banana nuggets”—as Allie’s dubbed them.

I’ve been wanting to try them since first drooling over stumbling upon them on her blog—and I figured they’d be a good hold-me-over-til-I-think-of-something-divine nosh.

1 banana, nuggified—then microwaved in a tbsp. maple syrup for 22 seconds (I always pick random numbers because I’m a loca like that) and topped with cinnamon

SO GOOD. So good that I knew I had to integrate them into whatever fabuloso breakfast was to come.

When I realized that I’d officially pondered breakfast for 1.5 HORAS—to the point that I needed a pregame—I decided to keep cosas simple and just throw my new banana amor into a trusty bowl of oats.

1/2 cup old-fashioned oats cooked in 1 cup water, 1 tbsp. maple syrup and 1/2 a thinly sliced banana. Topped with the other 1/2 of the banana, nuggified in another tbsp. maple syrup (microwaved for 16 seconds since it was only half) and cinnamon. Devoured with a peanut butter spoon.

Banana nugget center. Maple syrupy magic.

Drowning in syrup, sinking banana nuggets.

Drowning in syrup, sinking PB spoon.

I usually leave my PB on la cuchara [spoon] to ensure a little with every bite—but since it was melting/sinking, I decided to get crazy and mix it in.

Which was una buena idea because there were PB pools like the one below covertly dispersed throughout the bowl.

So, this breakfast kept me full for close to five hours. When I eventually broke for lunch, I wasn’t even actually hungry.

I’m not sure if it was the fact that breakfast included two grande bananas, or if this was just a very powerful oat combo, but if you ever need some trusty staying power—hit this desayuno up.

Throughout the morning, I sipped some sugar cookie sleigh ride.

Which I knew was vegan porque esta chica downs it like it’s her trabajo.

As did I. I had tres copas—one with Truvia, which was divine. Sugar cookie sleigh ride sweetened takes it to a whole new level.

Oh, and then I almost blew Vegan For a Day on a VITAMIN.

Juuuuuuust before unwrapping that little chocolate chew, I thought to myself, “Chocolate? Dairy?”

So I checked the ingredient list.

Correcto. Nonfat milk. Along with lots of terrible ingredients that I now know I consume on a daily basis.

Lucky for this vegan temp, I had these little guys.

Which after a little label reading…

..and a lot of Googleing, I learned were vegan.

Vegan bears? How ethical.

When it was getting into the almost-too-late-for-lunch realm, I turned to my favorite soup.

Which I quickly learned was vegan!

BUENO.

This Amy’s Alphabet soup is hands-down my favorite canned soup—and it literally kept me alive during college.

You’d think that after four years of overdosing on a canned good, I’d never want to touch it again.

But you’d be mistaken.

It’s a tomato-based veggie soup filled with alphabet pasta.

What more could a 22-year-old who wishes she were still 10 ask for?

My lack of comida throughout the first half of the day caught up with me during the second half.

Vegan snacks included:

My new favorite nut mix.

And a massive bowl of grapes and fresas.

After spending so much time coming up with a vegan breakfast that I was in the mood for, I did not want the same to happen con cena.

So throughout the day I conjured up a delectable dinner of cheetahs, green cheetahs and carrot fries—a fry trifecta, if you will.

Except when I checked out my sweet potato stash, I found this.

MOLD.

Mucho, mucho mold.

Malo.

Dreaming a perfecto meal—and mentally tasting cheetahs all day long—only to have mold snatch them away from you is triste.

However, sweet potato sob story was upsetting but not tragic, as I still had my green cheetahs and carrot fries.

Wrong.

Whichever power circuit supports my toaster oven went out—and me attempting to fix that on my own just wasn’t in the cards.

Apparently the fry gods were pissed that I was trying to create so many faux fry versions and decided to run a little interference.

I forfeited and went on to think up a no-kitchen, no-toaster oven dinner.

Ensalada was the obvious solution—but I’d gotten myself so in the mood for cooked/baked veggies that a raw veggie salad sounded entirely unappealing.

So I decided to take my standard veggie ensalada down a path I’d not ventured since the seems-like-forever-ago summer.

Una fruity ensalada.

Baby spinach, onions, sun-dried tomatoes, cucumbers, red grapes and strawberries.

I threw some hot salsa en el centro for an interesante sweet and spicy flavor contrast.

And I switched up my normal honey-balsamic dressing mix for a vegan-friendly maple syrup-balsamic concoction.

This ensalada was excelente. The spicy salsa went so well with the fruit—especially the strawberries.

And I looooooved the maple syrup substitution in my standard honey & balsamic mix.

Again, the strawberries worked so well with this flavor. I love marinating strawberries in balsamic vinegar—and the maple addition complemented this sabor [flavor] interaction so wonderfully.

La ensalada obviously wasn’t going to cut it for dinner.

So I made something I’ve been thinking about making for quite some time.

I introduce to you…

H2Oats (Hummus & Hot Sauce Oats)

I cooked 1/2 cup old-fashioned oats in 1 cup of water. When it was finished, I stirred in 2 tbsp. hummus and steamed baby spinach. Then I topped with mas baby spinach and, obviamente, mas hummus. Sriracha hot sauce atop.

Ok. HUMMUS + OATS = BRILLIANTE.

With a Sriracha cherry on top.

I’d initially planned on adding mucho mas Sriracha post-photography, but a little bit went a long way for this bowl. Having just a hint of hot sauce allowed the Sabra to be the star that it is.

The creaminess and flavor of our beloved hummus blended into our beloved oats is something I wish I’d discovered long ago.

If nothing else, THANK YOU Vegan For a Day (and the sweet potato and toaster woes) for leading me to finally try this.

Anyhow, you know what I wanted for dessert.

But after mucho tiempo Googleing, I learned that neither Jolly Time’s nor Orville Redenbacher’s Kettle Corn popcorn is vegan-friendly.

So, I had fresas y azucar.

Which I usually love.

But when you want popcorn, and you eat strawberries… strawberries and sugar are suddenly very disappointing.

So, pensamientos on Vegan Por Un Dia…

I loved the idea of trying something new food-wise—especially something that has such important ethical and environmental causes attached to it. However, I can’t shake the fact that eating a vegan diet felt like a diet the entire time.

You guys know how I feel about diets. And yesterday brought me right back to my South Beach-in’ sixteen-year-old self, going loca over carbs and what was and was not allowed.

At so many points throughout the day, I knew what I wanted but ended up thinking way too much about something else to eat—simply because I “couldn’t” have it. I really honor the whole “follow your body’s cues” approach to eating—and I didn’t like the feeling of denying myself what I was craving.

That said, I can’t stress how much I support and respect those who commit to making these sacrifices—be it for their personal well-being, or the well-being of animals, the environment or our society.

It was divertido—not to mention discovery-provoking (HEEELLLOOO, banana nuggets & H2Oats)—to experiment with veganism. And though I know—as I knew before yesterday—that right now, it’s a dietary style that’s not for me, I’d definitely be interested in further experimentation. I think I’d do better with it and be less frustrated by the dietary limitations if I tried it out for a bit longer—and was doing it with the goal of finding out if a dairy-free diet did anything to benefit my health.

One more gracias to all the vegan bloggers on whom I relied for foodie inspiration yesterday. And to todas who participated in Vegan For a Day!

Bueno, I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend!

In this case, mid-morning frost on a carpet of moss in a field where I’m currently working. The shade of a stand of fir trees kept the frost in place until coffee break, when I gathered my kit and dashed out into the scrub to snag a couple of photos.

I’m glad I did, even though they were quite rushed.

Moss, supporting a sprawl of wild strawberries:

…and a closer shot of strawberry plants gone red as the freeze comes on:

The full-sized versions of these two photos display the temporal layering of successive ice deposits as what looks here to be chunks of Morton salt. But trust me, it’s good ol’ H2O.

These come our way courtesy of Ziggy, my 50mm Sigma prime lens.

Enjoy.

¿Galletas?

Perhaps you know what that word means.

Perhaps you’ll find your way over to SpanishDict.com to find out. (FYI: SpanishDict.com is mi favorito online Spanish-English diccionario—and not just because it’s fun to say aloud.)

Either or, I’m giving away some highly-coveted galletas at the end of this post.

First, vamos a hablar about some h-day happenings.

‘Twas another “this is not November in NYC” day of warm and sunny weather.

Except this beautiful día kicked off with ‘lates…

instead of lattes.

(I cannot resist bad puns…)

It’s not very me to take on physical activity pre-cup o’ joe—but yesterday morning, I rolled out of bed and headed straight to pilates.

I’m so glad I did because it was quite possibly the best, most entertaining pilates class I’ve ever taken.

Best? Yes. This class was amazing. It was so well-structured and challenging. And it flew by. Always a plus. Also, I currently only go to pilates twice a week because I’ve only found two classes that I really enjoy. They’re both during the weekend—which means that sometimes they just don’t happen—so I’ve been looking for a good weekday class.

Entertaining? What could possibly make planks, hundreds and scissors divertido? Only the most hilarious instructor. No, unfortunately it wasn’t the Brooklyn Bikram yogi—though that would’ve been hysterical. But this pilates chica was just as cómica.

She was a tiny blonde with a thick Russian accent, and she began class with a story.

She’d taught her first class at a new studio in Manhattan this past weekend. After complaining that it was too small “because everyone was packed into the classroom like sardines”—she told us how she was unusually hard on one male student. “He couldn’t breathe,” she told us. “He couldn’t stretch. He looked like he was about to have a heart attack, but he was young. So I kicked him. And I yelled at him. He got a little better, but he was still pathetic.”

(She wasn’t one for sugar-coating, apparently.)

Anyhow, after class was over, she discovered that this man and the woman he attended class with were Mr. and Mrs. Ivanka Trump. Yes, she was kicking Ivanka Trump’s new husband.

Her response? “How would I know that? I’m just a silly immigrant girl… Do you think I read People? Oh well, he was still pathetic. But I don’t know if I’ll have that job next weekend.”

I wish I’d written down all of the hysterical things she said. Like: “Call me the Hundreds Hitler today. Because next week is Thanksgiving. And it’s against national law in this country to not gain 5 lbs. on Thanksgiving, right?”

I really liked her. I’ll be attending regularly on Wednesdays. And perhaps bringing a pen and pad.

On my walk home, I made another nice weather-necessitated iced coffee purchase.

I stepped outside my cafe box with this venti iced con soy milk, sugar and cinnamon.

I’ve pretty much got my coffee preferences down to a science. Hot coffee: milk/creamer + sweetener. Iced coffee: negro con sweetener. The sweetener is negotiable; the milk addition/absence (usually) is not.

For some reason, I decided to order my iced coffee with soy milk yesterday. No me gusta. I immediately remembered why I drink my iced coffee black. I find that iced coffee con leche tastes watered down, especially as the ice melts. No bueno.

Ah, well. We vivir. And we aprendar.

Breakfast was big bowl of greek yogurt.

Plain Oikos sweetened with honey and cinnamon; topped with lots ‘o layers of bananas and strawberries… and grahams.

The superstar center.

Messy is not bonita, but it is deliciosa.

I feel like I haven’t had fresh fruit—aside from apples—in a while, so I loved this breakfast bowl.

Snackage also came in the form of fresh fruit that I’ve not had in quite some time.

Grande grapes.

In an overflowing mug.

There may have been an encore in the form of handfuls out of the bag. But I’m not apologizing for extra grapeage.

Come lunch, I knew what I wanted.’

But it wasn’t really a complete lunch—so I threw together a standard ensalada.

Baby spinach, diced chicken, onion, yellow pepper, broccoli, roasted red peppers, cucumbers and tortilla chips. Dressed in celery salt and italiano dressing.

Italiano dressing=blech in my book. But I’ve been out of balsamica. Muy devastating.

What I really wanted was this.

In celebration of Waffle Wednesday, I busted out the Kashi Honey oat waffles and slathered on my dearly beloved cream cheese and raspberry preserves.

I’ve never done this before, but you can bet I’m going to do it again. BUENISIMA.

Almuerzo only held me over for dos horas, so more snackage went down.

I embraced this since it was National SnackFace Day.

Clearly the cream cheese & jelly waffle left me wanting más.

I tried to switch it up un poco.

Whole wheat english muffin: 1/2 with Laughing Cow & preserves. 1/2 with Laughing Cow and Sriracha.

You know how one side of an english muffin is inevitably bigger than the other? Well—and I think this habit comes from the same part of the brain as my OCD save the best for last tendency—when making a half-and-half english muffin, I always deliberate which 1/2 I’m going to like better and make sure those toppings go on the bigger half.

This 1/2 and 1/2 english muffin’s ganador: LC & raspberry preserves.

Except not! I got it incorrecto.

I ended up liking the LC & sriracha combo mejor.

Look at how little that half is. Que triste!

Another display of my OCD foodisms (and my unstoppable appetite):

Remember when I ate all the chocolate bunnies out of my box of new amigos?

When I tapped into the box yesterday, I noticed some brown bunnies at the bottom!

This problemo had to be fixed.

La solución:

A bowl of bunnie cereal.

So fantastically soggy that the chocolate action didn’t even matter.

Cena was Greek.

Ensalada was necesario because I finally got balsamic!

Normal-sized (as in, not my usual salad monster) greek-ish salad.

Baby spinach, onion, feta, roasted red pepper and olives. Topped with a dollop of salsa and tzatziki dip. Oh yea, and balsamic!

For the main event, I put this Sabra duo to work.

Greek pizza

In the toaster oven: Brushed with EVOO, baked at 375 degrees for 5-6 minutes on each side. Topped with a layer of Greek Olive Sabra and a layer of Sabra tzatziki dip—and micowaved onion, broccoli, spinach, roasted red peppers and feta. Then broiled for 3-5 minutes.

Which did nothing to melt the feta.

But everything to meld the incredible hummus and tzatziki Sabra flavors.

Aaaaamazing. I can’t wait to make more creations featuring this duo.

Dessert is what you’d expect.

Except minus the sriracha.

The only popcorn I don’t add anything to is Jolly Time Kettle Corn.

Because it is the BEST popcorn ever—and needs nada but what’s in the bag.

I’m pretty sure all the deliciousness comes from this sketchy sauce/seasoning on the side of the bag.

Actually, I know it. Because I rub individual popcorn pieces on that wondrous mystery ‘til it’s no more.

Ok, onto la galleta giveaway.

If you’ve not figured it out, galleta means cookie.

Remember when I reviewed and loved Nutridel cookies?

Well, the generous Marisela over at Nutridel has offered to send one lucky reader the “sampler pack” option they’ve just began offering.

If you recall, when I reviewed the cookies, only a 28 package box (2 cookies per package) was available for $42. Obviously, that’s a hefty dinero and galleta commitment to make if you’ve never tried Nutridel cookies. The new sampler pack offers a box of 8 (2 cookies per package)—two of each of the almond, flaxseed, oatmeal and pecan flavors—for $16.

Or, if you win this giveaway, FOR FREE.

There are five ways to enter this giveaway. Each counts as one entry, and be sure to leave a separate comment for each way you enter.

Leave a comment telling me which Nutridel cookie flavor you most want to try.

After seeing this, I’m sure I don’t need to explain why I had a cat named Cappuccino…

Oh god I hope he’s okay…

*For those who forgot/didn’t followed my blog since the beggining: I went to China this summer and left Cappuccino under my dad supervision…When I returned, he was…gone. Yup, that’s right: Daddy threw my baby away. *sob*

Ok no bad news, this was supposed to be a happy post :p

P-S: Thanks for your answer on the veins question. I think it’s because I have just eaten, my body is warm and hydrated so the blood is circulating like crazy. Now that I gained a bunch of weight, they are not visible anymore, only after dinner time (or a hot bath), because at lunch time I always have a cold sammie…:)

Tuna ‘Fast food’ sandwich

Tuna + Mustard/Ketchup + Pickle + Tomato +Lettuce

…Okay not really ‘Fast food’, but it reminded me of Burger King because of the mustard, ketchup and pickle and it was deliiiiish!

‘Love me’ Yogurt snack

Nothing special, just a mix of Vanilla and Strawberry yogurt, frozen strawberries and banana slices…but the pinkish colour is just too pretty! I love pink

Review review!

Persimmon

Verdict?

LOVE LOVE LOVE!

I’m going to try my best to describe it, but that’s hard because, well, it’s like explaining ‘How does an apple taste?’…

Taste:

Tropical flavor, like a papaya (I hate papayas so I have no clue why I like persimmon, but oh well).

Mild like honeydew.

Texture:

Like a tomato. Seriously: the skin is ‘hard’, not too much but it is compared to the ’slippery’ (?) flesh. At first I was going to say the flesh is like Jello or plum, but then I remembered it’s almost identical to a tomato.

If you have them too ripe, they will be like flour, like Tina said. (Same goes for tomatoes!) But I think I’ll try one ultra-ripe, just to see…maybe I’ll like the ‘flour’ texture…who knows?

Overall, it’s a nice (and expensive…) change from apples. (10$ for 10 persimmons…omg!)

I love to try new things, if it wasn’t for you guys, I would have walk by the stash of persimmons, thinking ‘What’s that orangy-yellowish’ ugly thing?’!

I just realized I’m only posting 2 times a week…

I’ll try to do better, although I don’t know how you guys can find the time to post almost daily! It takes me so much time to upload pictures, write everything, commenting, commenting back, reading your blogs…

from the BrewDog blog comes this news…“The long awaited Zephyr is being bottled at the brewery today. This will be the first bottling from our new piece of equipment for filling champagne bottles which are to be bottled conditioned. Zephyr started off life as a 9% Double IPA which has spent 21 months in a 1965 Invergordon whisky cask which was stuffed with fresh strawberries. It is now a 12% translucent pink strawberry infused Belgian inspired wood aged ale.

We are expecting a yield of around 250 bottles. The label has been designed by young Scottish designer Johanna Basford and is stunning. The beer will also come packaged in a presentation box.

Here is some more information on the project:

We are fortunate enough that Martin’s grandmother owns a lovely little Scottish strawberry farm, we decided to take full advantage of this.

We also had a Invergordon 1965 whisky cask. Invergordon is a fantastic grain whisky with amazing coconut, vanilla and toffee flavours. The fact the whisky had been in the cask for 42 years prior to us getting it made it even more special. We decided to combine 3 of our favourite things; old whisky casks, Martin’s grandmother’s strawberries and IPA.

We filled the cask with our 9% Imperial India pale ale along with a whopping 30 kilos of fresh strawberries, or maybe 29 kilos – James seemed to eat alot of them…

After the beer had been in the barrel for 2 months we decided we could no longer wait to sample the beery treasures held in the oak. And what better time to open them than when 2 of our customers came to visit? James’ gently tapped the cask only for the bung to explode skywards followed by a 6 foot high volcanic eruption of strawberry beer, completely soaking everyone in the vicinity with sticky strawberry seeds and hoppy ale. It had been fermenting in the cask – allot! The sugars in the strawberries had triggered the yeast still in the beer. It continued to ferment away slowly for another few weeks – this time with a proper pressure release fitted to ensure no more strawberry showers.

It looks and tastes amazing. It is a bright, translucent, fluorescent almost transparent pink colour – it is unlike anything I have ever seen in a glass. The hops of the India pale ale have died down a little but still give it a reassuring bite, the strawberry flavours dominate the nose and the coconut, vanilla and oak flavours of the cask hold it all together.”

This is supposed to be retailing for $100. But it still seems worth it. I do like the IPA’s that have light flavours like berry and oak.

It’s possible to make your own crème fraîche by adding cultured buttermilk or sour cream to heavy cream and letting it sit for a day at room temperature. We didn’t have a day, so this is store bought stuff. It goes well with strawberries and dark sugar (turbinado here).

Hi lovlies!

What a crazy week. I regret to inform you all, I don’t have many photos.

I was all over the place emotionally, because, well, mother nature…if you know what i’m sayin’….

However, here are my discoveries this week:

A new way to eat oats –that for me, has become a recent obsession.

I make my normal stove-top oats (1/4 c. oat bran, 1/2 c. silk, 1/2 warm banana mooshed!, cinnamon, salt and vanilla) then I top it with HOT (AND I MEAN BURNING!) fruit (blueberries, raspberries or strawberries) that I bought frozen and nuked in the microwave for 2 minutes. then I top that with a little bit of Trader Joe’s Vanilla Almond granola and ITS HEAVEN! Its like a cobbler. Seriously people. AMAZING.

So I decided that I’m going to start this new thing weekly where I make a list of things I like this week, here it is:

Things I love this week:

1. Farmville on Facebook – If you don’t know about Farmville, I may say you are lucky. I am addicted! I cannot stop farming my crops and tending to my animals! I blame my sister, she got me into it. haaa!

2. Taylor Swift - Yes, I LOVE TAYLOR SWIFT. And let me just say, I’m not a country music person. In fact I’m more of a classic rock gal myself, but I love her album “Fearless”. Oh lordy.

3. Lemon Larabars! I tried this for the first time this week. YUM-O!

4. Yogi Stress Relief Tea. Delicious, plain and simple, and it does work to relieve stress.

5. Harry Potter and The Order of the Phoenix DVD. I watched this with my boyfriend last weekend, and I love this movie!

6. Guitar - I have sort of been on/and/off playing guitar for years, but this week I got into it again and LOVE IT. Especially when I play Taylor Swift songs in my room in my underwear, those are good nights!

<<<I would insert a video of me playing, but I can’t figure out how to do that? Bloggies, I need help!!!>>>>>

7. Wine Tastings…- yeah, i’m not 21. but, still, they are awesome… I went to one with my boyfriend on friday night!

Well, that’s all this week. I sort of have a lot of homework to do tonight, but I’m feeling like a lazy college student…So I think I’ll just go to bed.

Have a good week everybody!

Well last night was the first real storm we’ve had for a while and I’m glad to say the veg plot survived pretty much unscathed. The purple sprouting took a bit of a battering and are now leaning slightly but as they were packed in pretty tight together they seem to have held each other up. The fence panel by the small bed came down, luckily this is were the beans were this year and I had just cleared it a couple of weeks back so no damage done. By 10am a new panel was in place (I have a few spares in the garage as our garden is fenced on three of the four sides).

You can just see the new panel behind the small bed.

The large bed was mainly brassica’s this year and is still pretty full. From front to back there 3 rows of parsnips (tender & true), a couple of rows of brussel sprouts (think the variety is maximus hybrid?), 2 rows of swede (virtue), a row of chard (bright lights), a row of cabbage (golden acre), 2 rows of kale (dwarf green curled and scarlet) and then about 8 purple sprouting brocolli plants (mix of early & late). It’s all packed in there but we’re now starting to harvest the winter veg as the nights are drawing in and turning colder.

The leeks have been poor again this year. I’m going to try a different variety next year. These are Musselburgh and are not as big as I expected.

I’ve planted out a few spring cabbages about a month ago that I’d sown in trays in the greenhouse and they’ve started to grow on. The variety is Pixie and they are dotted about wherever there is space.

I’ve also put in a couple of varities of lettuce over-winter (artic king and winter density) both in the greenhouse and outside, first time I’ve tried this so I’ll see how it goes.

The next job is to clear the front bed of squash and courgette, the courgettes in particular have been amazing this year, I had 3 plants (2 yellow and 1 green) and estimate around 40 courgettes per plant from mid-May to end of October. The strawberry plants have run amock and need sorting out and the last 2 or 3 butternut squash will soon succumb to the oven!

Combat fat! Your allies in battling bulge? Foods that do the work for you. These edibles have proven lipid-melting powers that help you slim. That’s a win.

By Veronica Byrd

Almonds Almond joy! Dieters who ate 3 ounces of these nuts every day reduced their weight and body-mass index by a solid 18 percent compared with an 11 percent drop in the no-nut group, a study in the International Journal of Obesity found. Almonds are high in alpha-linolenic acid, which can speed the metabolism of fats. Stick to 12 per serving.

Berries Vitamin C-loaded fruit such as strawberries and raspberries can help you sizzle up to 30 percent more fat during exercise, suggests research from Arizona State University at Mesa. Blend a vinaigrette of 1 cup berries and ¼ cup balsamic vinegar.

See our tips about Real Estate: http://www.robertjrussell.com

Cinnamon This spice could make your waistline nice. Sprinkling ¼ teaspoon on your food may prevent a postmeal insulin spike-this increase normally occurs after you eat and “signals the body that it should store fat rather than burn it,” explains Lauren Slayton, R.D., of New York City. Add a dash to your oatmeal, yogurt or coffee.

Mustard Hello, yellow. The spice that gives mustard its color, turmeric, may slow the growth of fat tissues, a study in the journal Endocrinology notes. Eighty-six mayo in favor of any mustard; sprinkle turmeric on cauliflower and roast for a tangy side.

Oranges Prevent pound creep with this citrus star: It contains fat-torching compounds called flavones. Women who ate the most flavones had a significantly lower increase in body fat over a 14-year period, a study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition finds. Snack on slices or drink freshly squeezed OJ (with pulp!) for the biggest payback.

Soybeans These green gems are rich in choline, a compound that blocks fat absorption and breaks down fatty deposits. Add ½ cup edamame to a salad.

Sweet potatoes Trade up to sweet taters. They’re high in fiber, which means no drastic insulin jumps and thus less fat packed onto your hips. Bake a small sweet potato-think of two bars of soap as a portion size-and top with a dollop of lowfat or nonfat cottage cheese.

Swiss cheese Holy cow: “Calcium-rich foods reduce fat-producing enzymes and increase fat breakdown,” says Michael B. Zemel, Ph.D., director of the Nutrition Institute at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. Put toe to toe with some of its cheesy counterparts, Swiss is a heavy hitter in the calcium department; layer a slice on a lunchtime sandwich, or stack some on high-fiber crackers.

I raised my eyebrows and stared at him a bit before looking around. ‘My friend knows where and I am and your name and number and when I should be getting back, but she doesn’t know what it is I am doing here exactly.’

J started to freak me out quite a bit to say the least. He gave me some tips on upping my security which I’ve already done a lot of research on. I also brought my friend’s mace, and the number for the local cab, so I mean, I had some things, but I am just not at the stage where I can get a driver. He ended up giving me some very nice advice. You can never be too careful afterall!

Today, I met with a guy called D who had been made redundant from the advertising agency he worked for. There was something so sweet and kind about him and to hear him talk about it, it just broke my heart. I didn’t really want to ask him for any money, but of course, I am in just of much need of a job.

The whole experience was a nicely erotic one if I’ve ever had one. I think perhaps I am just getting the chance to experience a truly sexual experience in a way i hadn’t really been able to experience before. Perhaps these men I have been attracting have luckily all been the type who believe that if they are paying someone like myself, they may as well make it something memorable, and it seems it just gives them a chance to explore a woman in a much more secure and comfortable way. I mean, they know I won’t judge them for whatever it is they want. Anyway, the bedroom was like a sauna, after a few minutes in the room, I had to leave and change into my garter and get out of my jeans. (I would normally already have the garter on under my outfit, but because I thought I would have time to change I didn’t bother.) I gave him a full body massage, very slow and thorough. I never really have gotten a chance to practice my techniques, so it was a nice opprotunity. He then returned the favor with interest of course. Ice cubes, strawberries, etc. I just never got the chance to do things like this before. I mean, I’ve tried, when I was with The Ex, but I couldn’t take it seriously. When I saw him trying to be romantic and seductive, it just made me laugh. I don’t feel that way with clients though. I truly enjoy the experience and find it unbelieveably erotic.

So far, noe one has been able to perform A levels with me. Is there something wrong with my arse?

In another note: V said I could move into his place, but I haven’t hear anything from him since. Squatters, i’ve found, are very unreliable.
