This is a short bit of drabble I’ve been throwing around for a few years. Not sure if I’ll ever finish it, but I hope to make progress on it someday. The next few parts will be added over the next week or so, since I don’t have time to write a real blog due to finals. Enjoy! -DTA

THE LIGHT under the door flickered erratically as soft but sinister footfalls echoed in the empty space beyond the oaken barrier. Back and forth. Back and forth. Back and forth they sounded. Her eyes grew wide as the sound grew louder, each rotation bringing those ominous feet closer, closer to the basement door and the protecting darkness beyond. She closed her eyes, praying against the dust which leaked from the ceiling boards above her, against the fistfuls of dank sawdust in her torn hands, against the night-blacked blood on the hem of her baby blue cotton dress that he would just . . .

SILENCE.

“Do you love me?” she whispered to the darkness surrounding her. His hand caught her white-gloved arm, and she gazed up into his arctic blue eyes, transfixed. The string quartet on the other side of the gilded ballroom had broken into a Venetian waltz, and the babbling brook of music enveloped her with heady exhilaration. He smiled softly into her love-glazed eyes, tossing his head slightly to knock a few strands of jet black hair out of his face. He knelt down beside her chair, pressing a pale finger to her eager lips.

“Of course I love you, silly girl. Why else would I be here?” He held out his hand to her. “Come.” He led her on to the glittering dance floor and draped his arm gracefully about her waist. “Happy birthday, Marina.”

Her father smiled down at her, holding out a small velvet box. She looked at him questioningly, taking it with care. “Your grandmother wanted me to give this to you when you became a woman,” he said, tears in his eyes. “It has been in our family for generations, and she thought it was right for you to have it.”

She opened the box and gasped with wonder. Inside was a silver ring, shaped like the northern star. Inscribed within it were four triangles like the points of a compass, with a single oval-shaped diamond in the center. The whole ring blazed with a powerful internal fire, so that she was nearly forced to look away as she withdrew it from the box. She placed it gingerly on her right ring finger. It was a perfect fit.

“Do you like it?” She smiled, her eyes filled with tears.

“Yes, Devon. It’s beautiful.” The handsome young man stroked her hair as she lay with her head in his lap, looking at the ceiling of their bedroom. He had painstakingly painted the night sky in vibrant silver and midnight blue, even taking the time to craft a realistic full moon in one corner. It seemed to glow with life, and she gasped as she noticed the dark clouds he had painted, eclipsing patches of the sky. “I love it.”

“I’m glad,” he whispered, leaning over to gaze into her eyes. “I want our life together to be perfect.”

AND IT WAS, for a little while.

Do you know what heaven looks like?

When I was a child, our teacher asked our class that question; aside from the question, “who wants to go in heaven?”, which she usually asks us so she can bribe us to behave. Different hands gave different answers. Some of us imagined it to be surrounded with winged-angels, fluffy clouds and everything beyond the word, “magical”.

I was in Kinder then, a student of a Catholic School inside our village; and, for twelve more years, Catholic Schools were my second home. It was only in college when I first enrolled in a non-sectarian school. Yes, I don’t have Theology Classes or the likes in UP Manila. But before UP, for twelve years, I was exposed to religious studies and learnings of faith. Don’t get me wrong, I practice my religion, though, I must say that I am not really a “fanatic” (sorry for the lack of better term).

Famous saints, good faith, bible verses, I was exposed to all that teachings; and “Heaven”, among the many others I mentioned, has always been a favorite discussion. The questions were always the same since I first heard it when I was still in Kinder. “Do you want to go to heaven?”; “What are you going to do to attain a good afterlife in heaven?”; and, “Who will go to heaven?”, to name a few. Like the staple questions, the answers were always almost the same. Good deeds, life of holiness, strong faith.

There’s one answer, though, about heaven that I always carry in my mind. It was an answer to the question, “How does it feel like to be in heaven?”. The answer came from my Grade School GMRC (Good Manner and Right Conduct) teacher. She was a nun. Sister Esther has always been strict to our class. I remember she even gave me a final grade of 83. When you’re GC like I was before, you know 83 is already a relatively low grade. Anyway, we always thought of her as the traditional, conservative and strict nun. Yet, one day in class, she surprised us all with her answer to that question.

Here’s what she said:

“Alam nyu ba yung feeling na pag gustong-gusto mo nang magpunta ng banyo? Yun yung pag sobrang ihing-ihi ka na, dahil ang tagal mong pinigilan ang ihi mo. Ang sakit diba? Hindi ka mapakali. Tinatawag ka na ng banyo. Pakiramdam mo ay sasabog na ang pantog mo. Hanggang sa wakas, nakapunta ka na ng banyo at nakaihi ka na. Aaahh, ang sarap. Yun ang heaven!”.

“Have you ever had the feeling of really wanting to go to the bathroom? The feeling when you really really need to go, because you have been holding it for some time. It hurts, right? It’s so bothersome. The bathroom keeps on calling you. You even feel like as if your bladder is going to explode anytime. Finally, you were able to go to the bathroom and were able to urinate. Aaahh, it feels good. That is heaven!”.

There was silence for a second. Then “oohs” and “aahhs” finally came. We were all shocked that time to hear her talk like that. We were actually expecting a very high and religious, almost bible-like answer. Instead, she made heaven sound very simple to us.

I will never really forget her answer. Even up to this day, every time I would go to the bathroom, I still think of her thoughts. Is heaven really like the comfort of taking a pee?

There is no reason to continue allowing thoughts of fear and unwanted circumstances to enter your mind in any way

One thing I have noticed through my readings of so many different stories, is that writers use this technique so differently.
Some use it in order to show us what the character is thinking, but some use it as a way to confuse the reader. Why would they do this? Why do we have to work so hard, and think so hard, just to understand what the heck is going on?
I understand we should have to think sometimes, but not in order to just understand the plot! When we want depth, fine, we might have to look for it. However, and this happens too often, we have to reread the same sentence over and over just to figure out the denotative meaning.

It is good that we take the time to connect with others
with family and foster connection
relationships based on love
it is necessary in healing who we are as a whole
it is necessary in expanding our experience of love individually
it is for the best and highest benefit of both the whole and the individual
where there is separation, resentment limitation and lack of love
there need be forgiveness and expansion
moving out on faith with pure love
knowing that source will heal what needs be healed
if we act as vessels of this love
forgiving and seeing all without fault
yes
this is the love we are sending out throughout the world on a daily basis
this is the love we are focusing your attention on each day
to remind you of how powerful you are
how amazing and beautiful your love can be
how easily you can heal the world by healing yourself
by forgiving yourself
and extending that same love and compassion to others
it may seem easier to forgive others however
true forgiveness starts within and extends beyond
it is hard to see the resentment

Those who read my blog often find unusual anagrams that connect to something that occurs in real life. Sometimes the telling reveals names or other specific information, all coming from anagramming randomly chosen comic strips text bubbles. The comics shown in the collage below are from those gleaned over the internet on the morning of the 25th.

On the 25th of November, 2009, a beloved friend died. John Crabb, born July 10, 1953, died in the loving arms of his wife of sixteen years. Today would have been their anniversary. Theirs was a love story I hope she will pass on to others some day. The world is a better place because of their being a couple and sharing of themselves. The text which is outlined in red is that which was used for the anagram. The previous post is also connected to this one, with another anagram, the first done since July 10th of this year. This is how the coincidences of the last few days relate to my anagram.

John Crabb once told me he was a mason, so I was glad to hear he died within the walls a masonic facility rather than in a university hospital. Somehow it makes a difference. His wife of 16 years told me today would have been their 16th anniversary. People I had dinner with on Thanksgiving told me today was their 16th anniversary as well. Must have been a good day 16 years ago. Love has many coincidences.

The anagram, done from comics on the morning of the 25th, tells that John, often called by his last name only, would be gone on the 25th. According to his wife, he died at 11:45 PM. She called on the 26th to let us know.

The comics and anagrams do not necessarily go together in this blog, because conversations of sorts come together as part of the collages themselves. The anagrams are only randomly chosen text from within the collages, generally for separate context. Sometimes you can tell I am following a c ertain theme or nexus, either my own or one suggested by the comics themselves. Make of it what you will, the connections are there.

Remember I posted a link to Jim Mitchem’s wonderful post Eleven Minutes? I loved his stream-of-conscious ramble and wanted to try it. So, here’s mine – 7 minutes instead of 11 because… I’m sparing you.

11:10 pm

So today, in the last few seconds of a  20-minute Nano sprint, one of my characters had a heart attack. It surprised me. I didn’t see it coming. I think that’s good. I mean, I hope he’ll be all right and all, but the fact that his collapse surprised me is a sign that I am writing with a certain degree of abandon. If I’m going to have to clean the mess up in December, let it be a fine, rambunctious mess. That’s all I’m saying. Like my hair. Okay, it’s not really fine (especially not right this second), but it is rambunctious and it is frequently a mess. And if you’re wondering what that has to do with writing, stop. It doesn’t have anything to with writing, it just crossed my mind when I wrote the word mess. Let’s leave it at that, okay? Because what really has my attention right now is my neck. Or actually just below my neck, and above my shoulder blade. I slept on it funny and it’s been bothering me all day. Remember the good old days when you never hurt yourself sleeping? I do. Those days were awesome. Not that these days are bad. They’re pretty good actually. I’m having a lot of fun, getting to try a bunch of new things. And actually I was thinking about that recently. About motion. About how I am now, without a doubt, in motion, and it feels very forward, very north star-ish. I was thinking about this in the car. I was driving and two things happened. One, I wondered how you know for sure you’re moving forward. How do you know you’re not moving sideways. I could be taking a seriously scenic route, and not be moving forward at all, but I guess that’s okay; you know, all that stuff about the journey being more important than the destination. Whatever, for the sake of my 7-minute post, it doesn’t really matter because the second thing that happened was a duck walked out into the middle of the street. Three ducks to be precise, and a goose, because there’s a pond near where I live and there are ducks in the pond, and sometimes, they’re stupid. They are. I’m convinced that ducks aren’t, on the whole, very bright, probably because we humans aren’t very bright either, and we feed them bread crumbs and God knows what else, as we lean against the signs that say “Please don’t feed the ducks.” So anyway, these ducks walked right out into the street, spaced equidistant apart so they effectively blocked two lanes, and stopped. It was this weird duck-vs-human suburban showdown. Eventually someone honked and the ducks hurried, first one way and then the other, but in the end they made no real progress at all.

I’m wanting to somehow link that little story back to my thought about forward motion, but I have no idea how to do it meaningfully, and even if I did, I’m out of time.

This morning, I was so shocked to find out about the Maguindanao Massacre. I even had goosebumps upon hearing the details of the massive killing.

MANILA, Philippines – Forty-three persons – including a politician about to file her and her brother’s certificates of candidacy (COCs), as well as journalists covering the event – were confirmed killed when heavily armed men waylaid the group on its way to the local Commission on Elections (Comelec) office in Maguindanao.

Supporters of Buluan Vice Mayor Toto Mangudadatu and Mangudadatu Vice Mayor Eden Mangudadatu and their companions were on their way to the Comelec office to file COCs at around 10:30 a.m. when they were blocked at a checkpoint manned by some 100 Maguindanao police personnel and armed civilian volunteers allegedly led by Datu Unsay town mayor Datu Andal Ampatuan Jr.

Watching the news on TV was even more depressing. The sight of the scattered bodies of the victims, some of which are Media People who were just there to cover the event, was really dismaying. And for what? All for the benefits of those who are hungry for power and position. What’s even bothering me is that some of the alleged suspects are Government Officials and Policemen. I even heard from Jayem, earlier this morning, that he saw in the news that when the victim’s family tried to reach the Provincial Director of Maguindanao, they were harshly answered: “…wala akong alam dyan!”. Later this evening, we found out that the same official was among those who were suspected to be behind the crime. No wonder he was being evasive.

More information were soon given in the news. More names were dropped, more stories of injustice and cruelty were related. Families and friends of the victims, and the group of the Media People were asking for justice for what happened.

This is what happens when Politics go deeper to its dirtiest game.

I feel for those who were emotionally damaged, both families and friends, and I pray that justice will be served immediately.

for you are here to enjoy every breath every moment
you are here to commune with source and co-create
for you are the very nature of the divine
and you are more than just this body more than just this human form more than just the mind and thoughts you currently are aware of
so much more so much deeper so much grander than that you are indeed
for there is a part of you that is awakening day-to-day
and arising into your consciousness

that is why you are here once again
that is why you exist to be incredibly at peace and in love with all that is that is your existence
follow the bliss because bliss leads you to alignment with all that is
leads you to harmony and grace peace and love
bliss is simply an emotional and spiritual indicator that you are aligned with where you need be
do not be afraid of confused
do not tangle the limiting belief you have about bliss
the social conventions you are familiar with the true meaning of bliss for bliss is pure and good and wholesome
and righteous
And something to be enjoyed indeed every moment
which you can do
believe that you are an extension of source in all its splendor
you are the divine in human form
know that you have every right to shine and be set free from any limitations
know that you are the very nature of the almighty and that you can seek and find whatever it is your heart desires know that as an extension of source all things are for you
all things will bring about the balance your heart desires and all things are part of you
you are part of all that is
know this and understand that the balance can be enjoyed and your role is to allow source the inner connection
to guide you to fulfilment
to guide you to limitless love to guide you to doing exactly what you desire most
being of the best and highest benefit to all you can including yourself your awareness your consciousness of what is
you are expanding as you think of these things and you will continue
just allows source to do its good and know that all is well and always will be

Sleepover at Marianne’s tomorrow and I. Absolutely. Cannot. Wait.
Two-three days of just us hanging around the east and exploring.
And no one in the world able to tell us what we can’t do, cos we can do anything!

My sisters are both sick hence tomorrow before I leave for said sleepover I have to buy lunch for them. Thus the two of them love me very much right now:D Bopsy’s also taking my bed just in case she has to run to the toilet in the middle of the night to throw up, so that she doesn’t have to concentrate on climbing down a ladder en route to the toilet. I even gave her my Rafael so that she’d feel better.

See, I’m such a good sister:D
Although I’m not guilty enough to abandon my sleepover plans to take care of them. They’re so old, they can take care of themselves!

Wednesday’ll be the first time Bopsy and I watch Singapore Idol separately though. It’s become almost tradition to watch together. Every monday and tuesday it’s a habit for us to turn to each other and exclaim “Wednesday/Tomorrow got Singapore Idol!” like two die-hard fans who spend all their pocket money and more voting so that their favourite idols will stay in the competition- whom we’re so not.

Thanks to Bopsy (again) I managed to catch The Amazing Race at 6 just in time. This season I’m supporting Sam and Dan-yeah you know, those gay brothers- due to superficial reasons like they’re the best eye candy in the entire show(or what’s left of it. I only started watching like three episodes ago where there were only five teams remaining so there wasn’t much to choose from.)

I won’t say Sam and Dan are the most sporting team or the most deserving team, but it’s entertaining when they argue and even more so when they clash with the other teams. Just when I thought they made Flight Time and Big Easy their rivals last episode, they stole Brian and Ericka’s cab this episode. And they didn’t even feel guilty about it! Instead Sam was going on about how it was a “smart move”. Tsk tsk.

OK, mean as it was, they did it to stay ahead of the other teams cos they knew they had a chance of being eliminated. And isn’t that what the race is all about? I guess it’s either morals or winning. Honestly, if I were them, I’d pick winning. My competitive side always triumphs over my conscience I guess.

Ah Baby’s playing Soddything now and he’s a set down:( ah well shan’t be negative he’s got me watching now and that’s all he really needs…he really can’t afford to lose this even though it’s a round robin match. People are still talking about his loss to Soddything at the French; what would happen if he lost this as well? Shit. Baby should really stop wearing sleeves. It’s just giving him really bad luck.

And just to remind him how good he looked and how well he played when he went sleeveless…

There are a lot of things that I really want to blog about right now. I even had my “topics” written so I won’t forget them. Unfortunately, I am still feeling a little tired from attending this morning’s event, the Orcom Convention in DLSU, which I’ll probably blog about, too. Instead, I opted to just open my Facebook account and back-read some posts. Upon opening, I immediately noticed the notifications. I checked them out, and learned that I was tagged by one of my friends. Curious that I am, I clicked on the link. It was a note, which I find really funny. That’s when I thought of just sharing that piece instead of what I originally have in mind.

80’s/90’s Baby Ka Ba?

1) Kilala mo sina Shaider, Bioman at Masked Rider Black

~ You probably remember these fictional characters. From what I can recall, they are  just ordinary people who then become “robot-like” super heroes when the need arises. If you ask me, they all look the same to me, except that Masked Rider Black looks more like of a cockroach to me.

2) Kumakain ka ng Humpy Dumpy at Marie

~ I never liked any of those treats. Humpy Dumpy smells like, errr, “something”, and Marie is just too tasteless for me. But yeah, most of the time, these two were always included in my snack menu or in my baon menu.

3) Alam mo ang universal song na “U-WI-AN NA”

~ Who wouldn’t know the tune and the rhythm of this all time favorite battle cry every time the bell would signal the end of classes. One voice is all that is needed, and the rest of the class will follow. Soon, it’s a whole chorus, and that’s when the teacher will try to control us all.  ;)

4) Nagsayaw ka ng Macarena

~ I never understood the song nor I can sing it. I can only remember the last part of its chorus, “Hey, Macarena!” Plus, I know I can dance it, too.

5) Alam mo ang meaning ng “Tympers”

~ I was always a street kid. I loved playing outside with my friends, whether it’s Sikyo, Taguan, Piko, Patintero, Ten-Twenty or what have you. Name it, I played it once; thus, I definitely, definitely know the meaning, by mind and by heart, of “Tympers!”  :)

6) Alam mo ang importance ng “Period, kandado susi, no erase!”

~ Ever since I was a child, I have always engaged myself into any form of argumentations or childish debate. At the same time, I used to also demand and implement silly rules among my play mates. Well, I think we all have probably went through that stage. ) And with every such statement, my playmates and I usually end our speech with the lines mentioned above. I even remember it was a very powerful line, to the extent that no one, as in no one, was ever allowed to contest whoever threw that line.

7) Meron kang pencil case na maraming pindutan

~ Oh yes, I did have one. Not only does it had a lot of buttons, but it also had a “second floor”; meaning, an extra compartment. I even remember trying to persuade my mom so hard just so she can buy me that pencil case.;))

~ Crazy as it may sound, but yes, I used to think that these cuties can generate more “baby kisses”. I even had a special container for them with cottons, which I regularly change, too.

I know that most, if not all, of you guys who were born under the same years, can very much relate to what I posted. Sometimes, it’s just really fun going back to those days of innocence, when all that matters are simple things in life.
