Okay, well not exactly… but Switzerland is upset about Google’s street view application. Switzerland’s privacy watchdog is concerned that the service could potentially expose too much information about people – especially without consent from individual citizens. So far Google has been slow to adapt the changes requested by the government, forcing officials to take them to court. Other European countries (notably Germany) have stated similar concerns about privacy and Street view. We’ll see where this goes…

Il servizio Street View della google ha fatto letteralmente giro del mondo, infatti si sta diffondendo a macchia d’olio.
Più si difonde, più fa parlare di se, ora è arrivato in Messico dove ha immortalato scene raccapriccianti, tra cui la foto di un uomo a terra che con ogni probabilità è morto oppure in fin di vita.
Il fotogramma è stato prontamente rimosso, prima era visibile da qui.

Bé, gairebé tota Catalunya. Quan es va estrenar el servei fa aproximadament un any, només estaven disponibles les grans ciutats i en el cas de Catalunya, bàsicament hi podíem veure els carrers de Barcelona.

Ara, des de fa uns dies, quan entrant a Google Maps, sel·leccionem la icona del “ninot” a l’esquerra a dalt i l’arrosseguem damunt del mapa, veurem com s’assenyalen en blau gran part de les carreteres de Catalunya:

Això vol dir que per aquí ja hi ha passat el cotxe de Google i que ja hi podeu passejar virtualment. Sembla que per a algunes poblacions estan disponibles tots els carrers (excepte algunes vies peatonals, els barris vells, etc) mentre que per altres només ho estan les vies d’accés i algunes vies urbanes principals. Swiss government challenges Google Street View for failing to meet its privacy demands.

Google’s “Street View” application is the topic of a court case once again, this time in Switzerland.  For those unfamiliar with its use, “Street View” allows users a 360 degree street-level view of any location, from anywhere in the world. According to the BBC, Swiss concerns stem from the height of the Google camera, which allows it to see over walls and hedges that would otherwise prevent line of sight, and the application’s use of faces and vehicle license plates that are not rendered “sufficiently unrecognizable.” Google has already been asked (nicely?) to comply with the Swiss requests, but has not, and is now preparing to “vigorously contest” the case.

Is this a violation of privacy rights? If all images were acquired from a legal perspective, is there a case here? This relates very strongly to photography and privacy rights, which we as journalists need to be aware of. What do you think is the proper course of action?

Search engine giant Google is facing a court case in Switzerland because of ‘violations’ of privacy on its Street View service.

The service allows a 360-degree view of any street-level location.

“Numerous faces and vehicle number plates are not made sufficiently unrecognisable,” said data protection commissioner Hanspeter Thuer.

Google are dismissing the claims, and are disappointed by the country’s moves. Google are going to “vigorously contest” the case.

Mr Thuer is especially concerned about people shown in sensitive locations such as hospitals, prisons or schools.

He also said that the height of the camera was problematic because it allowed a view over fences, hedges and walls, meaning that more could be seen from Street View than by a normal passer-by.

The commissioner said Google was asked in August to take various measures and had not complied with the requests.

It is likely to take months before any court case actually starts, but it could have a more immediate impact on the Swiss availability of the service.

Buenísimo. Pues si se hace caso a la recomendación de visitar la página de donde ha sido sacado, llegamos a CollegeHumor (y más concretamente a su sección de originales), una web donde podemos ver parodias de todo tipo, desde la ejecución mediante la silla eléctrica de la I de PIXAR, la desaparición frustrada de Batman, la difícil tarea de los conductores del coche de Google Street View (por cierto, ya están Vigo y Coruña en Google Street, igual apareceis en alguna foto!), o de como Ringo se queja de no cantar más. Una web muy recomendable que, aunque tenga los contenidos en inglés, seguro que irán apareciendo subtitulados en youtube.

Uma entidade governamental suíça abriu um processo judicial no Tribunal Administrativo Federal contra a empresa Google.

Acho ridículo este processo, visto que é um serviço de enorme utilidade para todos os utilizadores e dá a conhecer vários locais do mundo de forma detalhada, sem sair do computador (obviamente que não é a mesma coisa, mas fica a ideia).

Em Portugal aconteceu algo parecido há um tempo, em que um casal foi fotografado na rua pelo carro do Google Street View, e aproveitou para pedir umas indemenizações. O chamado dinheiro fácil. Além de aparecer nas fotos a apontar para o carro e a fazer sinais; foram vistos ainda a olhar para o carro, já este estava no final da rua. A rua não é um lugar público? Querem privacidade numa lugar público?

A Google disponibiliza uma hiperligação para podermos “reclamar” ou reportar algo de errado numa fotografia.

Podemos pedir para remover, ou distorcer (embora já faça isso automaticamente). Não era bem mais simples mandas retirar a fotografia de uma forma “amigável”, ao contrário de seguir para tribunal e pedir indeminizações exurbitantes?

Não concordo com estes processos contra o Street View, pois é uma ferramenta fantástica, que a mim já me deu um enorme jeito e acredito que também dê a outras pessoas!

Querem dinheiro fácil? Não existe, lamento informar.

Sorry, but I had to talk about a very personal pleasure: Google Street View has now arrived to Mexico. Streets of Mexico City, Monterrey, Guadalajara, Puerto Vallarta, Cancun, Cozumel and Playa del Carmen are now available in the 3D software. Mexico is the first Latin American country covered by Street View (and Google Maps). Brazil should arrive very soon, and then Argentina and Chile (photos will be taken there in the next few days). For the record: Pontiacs have been used to take photos in the streets of Mexico City. Wow, what a great light in those photos…

Now we are waiting for those famous weird photos from Google Street View ! Keep your eyes open…

En este blog hay un post que habla del tema.

La comisión suiza que vigila la protección de datos en la Red ha denunciado ante la Justicia al servicio de Google Street View alegando que ha hecho caso omiso a sus recomendaciones para tratar determinadas imágenes callejeras.

Street View permite navegar virtualmente por determinadas ciudades gracias a una recogida de imágenes reales que hacen sus vehículos. Desde la introducción de este servicio en Suiza este año, la citada comisión ha criticado que pudieran verse matrículas de coches y rostros de peatones, particularmente en las imágenes que se ofrecen cerca de centros educativos, sanitarios o penitenciarios. También preocupó la altura de las cámaras que tomaban imágenes por encima de muros.

La comisión solicitó a Google que retirara el servicio hasta no haber cumplido con sus recomendaciones. Google se negó, alegando la legalidad del servicio y la eficacia de su política de pixelización para evitar el reconocimiento de matrículas y coches.

Peter Fleischer, zuständig für den Datenschutz bei Google zeigt sich enttäuscht und will die klage anfechten. “Wir haben uns vor und nach dem Launch mit dem Eidgenössischen Datenschutzbeauftragten getroffen und unsere Technologie erklärt. Wo gewünscht, haben wir Maßnahmen vorgeschlagen, um die Technologie zum Schutz der Privatsphäre zu verstärken und jegliche Bedenken auszuräumen.” erklärt Fleischer in einer Mitteilung. Street View sei in der Schweiz von Anfang an rege genutzt worden.
Seit August dieses Jahres ist Street View auch in der Schweiz verfügbar und ermöglicht es, die grösseren Schweizer Städte wie Zürich, Basel, Genf oder Luzern in 3D zu erkunden. Hanspeter Thür ist der Ansicht,  dass Google die Gesichter der Passanten sowie die Autokennzeichen nicht ausreichend anonymisiert. Zudem würden Personen in “sensibler Umgebung” gezeigt, zum Beispiel vor Krankenhäusern, Gefängnissen oder Schulen.

Thür kritisiert, dass Google nicht nur wie ursprünglich angekündigt hauptsächlich Stadtzentren fotografiert habe, sondern auch viele Städte flächendeckend ins Netz gestellt hat. In Außenbezirken, in denen die Bevölkerungsdichte abnehme, sei das einfache Verwischen von Gesichtern insbesondere wegen der Zoomfunktion nicht mehr ausreichend.

In Street View sei dank der Einblicke, die über Zäune, Hecken und Mauern gewährt werden, mehr zu sehen als ein gewöhnlicher Passant von der Straße aus sehen könne. Damit sei die Privatsphäre bei umfriedeten Höfen und Gärten nicht mehr gewährleistet, ist der Datenschützer überzeugt.

I absolutely love Google Street View. I use it frequently to check locations where pictures were taken and also to travel vicariously. I am eager for Google to add Bangkok to their itinerary.

Recently I located a former colleague and found he’s a Professor at the University of Glasgow, Scotland. I was able to go right to the campus and see the Department of Computer Science Building. Amazing!

Still I understand people’s concerns about privacy. It’s one thing to allow tourists freedom to take pictures and even publish them online. But it seems so different when Google have their specially equipped cars (and trikes) with a camera mast that can look over walls and fences.

I wonder if Google could have gone about it in a different way? My perception is they tend to start massive projects and then act all innocent when people object. Much the same with their book scanning. I am sure many people thus perceive them as arrogant. That’s a bad place to argue from.

But if Google asked permission from every authority who’d conceivably have something to say on the matter then they’d never get started. As an old boss used to say “It’s easier to apologise than to ask permission.”

Maybe if the Street View camera was lower so it photographed no more than the average pedestrian then some concerns would lessen. I don’t know if their setup is consistent worldwide.

All the Street View pictures I have seen have had vehicle license plates and people blurred for privacy. I have never seen a problem with that but it can make the pictures a bit annoying.

The thing I like least about the interface is the transition between pictures. I would have thought there would be a smooth transition, but instead it is a jarring change. Considering the lamentable internet speed I have here in Bangkok it is remarkable it works at all.

I don’t have any Street Views of Bangkok so here’s a picture of Santa Clara Caltrain Station in California. I used to travel to San Francisco regularly from here.

Der Eidgenössische Datenschutz- und Öffentlichkeitsbeauftrag­te Hanspeter Thür hat heute erklärt, Google vors Verwaltungsgericht zu bringen, weil Google die im September geforderterten Massnahmen zum Schutz von Persönlichkeitsdaten nicht so umgesetzt hat, wie das vom EDÖB gefordert wurde.

Es geht um folgende Forderungen:

• Vollständige Unkenntlichmachung von Gesichtern und Autokennzeichen. Insbesondere Personen in der Umgebung vor Spitälern, Gefängnissen oder Schulen sollen nicht erkennbar sein.
• Keine Aufnahmen von Privatstrassen, wenn keine Einwilligung vorliegt
• Die Kameras auf den Google-Autos müssen niedriger montiert werden, so dass man damit nicht über die ansonsten blickdichten Zäune und Mauern spannern kann.
• Die Vollständigkeit der Bilder: Entgegen angeblicher Beteuerungen von Google wurde viele Städte flächendeckend ins Internet gestellt

Ich finde ja einige der Punkte durchaus begrüssenswert: Dass Gesichter oder andere Erkennungsmerkmale anonymisiert werden, scheint mir sinnvoll. Dass Google nicht in Privatstrassen über blickdichte Mauern fotografiert (wie es im Fall des Hauses meiner Eltern geschehen ist) sollte selbstverständlich sein.

Wichtig scheint mir aber, dass es sich dabei um eine kleine Zahl von Ausnahmefällen handelt. Auf den allermeisten Bildern von Google Street View sind perfekt anonymisierte Menschen und Fahrzeuge zu sehen, fotografiert von für alle zugänglichem öffentlichem Grund, was meines erachtens keine Datenschutz-Probleme aufwerfen sollte. Als begeisterter Nutzer würde es mich persönlich betreffen, wenn diese paar Ausnahmefälle dazu führen würden, dass Google Stree View in der Schweiz eingestellt werden müsste.

Ein Beispiel: Ich suche  seit ca. 10 Monaten (ohne Scheiss!) eine neue Wohnung in der Stadt Zürich (übrigens: mind. 4-Zimmer, schön, bezahlbar, wer einen Hinweis hat wird fürstlich belohnt!). Es kommt fast nur Mist auf den Markt: Bei den meisten Wohnungen weiss man schon, wenn man vor dem Gebäude steht, dass man darin sicher nicht wohnen möchte.

In der Ära vor Google Street View bin ich noch sechs bis zehnmal pro Woche in irgendwelche Aussenquartiere zu Besichtigungen von Wohnungen gefahren, nur um vor der Türe schon zu merken, dass diese sowieso nicht in Frage kommen.

Heute kann ich mir das dank Google Street View ersparen. Ich kann mir schon ein ziemlich gutes Bild des Hauses machen, in welchem die Wohnung liegt, kann durch die Nachbarschaft spazieren, kann abschätzen, ob die Lage viel Verkehrslärm abkriegt, und kann abklären wo der nächste Migros liegt – und das alles von zu Hause aus. Zusammen mit Informationen zu Preis, Quadratmeterzahl und anderen Angaben aus dem Inserat sortiere ich die besonders üblen Wohnung schon aus, bevor ich zur Besichtigung gefahren bin. Eine unheimlich Effiziensteigerung der Wohnungssuche, die mir bestimmt schon zahlreiche Stunden meiner Lebenszeit geschenkt hat.

Diese und viele weitere positive Anwendungen von Street View stehen den offensichtlichen Datenschutzproblemen gegenüber. Hier sollte unbedingt eine Güterabwägung stattfinden. Gerade für Forderungen, die länger dauern könnten, wie beispielsweise das erneute Abfotografieren der Strassen mit niedrigeren Kameras, sollte der Datenschutzbeauftragte ein wenig mehr Kullanz einräumen.

Zudem scheint mir auch die Aussage von Thür etwas absurd, dass Google im Vornherein angeblich behauptet hätte, nur Stadtzentren zu fotografieren und an Aussenquartieren nicht interessiert zu sein. Erstens macht das für die Datenschutzproblematik keinen Unterschied und zweitens kommt bei mir  der Verdacht auf, dass er damit vom Versäumnis ablenken will, dass er sich erst eingeschaltet hat, als der Street View schon live war.

Pues si ¡y lo que nos gusta!
Que buena manera de inaugurar este blog de la Peña El Roce de Ejea, con un homenaje a nuestro pueblo. Y para eso nos servimos de una de las últimas novedades de Google, el Streetview, que ya ha llegado hasta nuestras calles ¡y menudo entretenimiento! Esto es como un juego, a ver quien encuantra más cosas, más datos, a la persona más conocida…
Yo por ahora ya he encontrado mi coche en la puerta de casa, y entre mis compis de trabajo hemos averiguado que era un lunes de septiembre-octubre del 2008, que se tomaron las fotos por la mañana/mediodía (hemos visto relojes con hora y temperatura, jeje). Bueno, aquí os lo dejo, ¡cuidado que es un vicio! ¡Venga a ver quien encuentra lo más gracioso!

Den Bosch, Breda, Eindhoven en Tilburg zijn vanaf gisteren te zien via Google Street View. Op deze manier zijn de Brabantse steden te bekijken alsof je door de straat loopt.
Het Amerikaanse internetbedrijf heeft haar dienst deze week in Nederland uitgebreid met dertig steden.

In maart had Google 4000 Nederlandse kilometers in kaart gebracht, nu zijn dat er 35.000. Google weet niet wanneer heel Nederland te zien is. Nu zijn er met name in het zuiden van Nederland nog veel plaatsen niet zichtbaar.

Het internetprogramma Street View is niet onomstreden. Google heeft geregeld brandjes moeten blussen, omdat mensen zich door de foto’s in hun privacy aangetast voelden. De onderneming maakt nu zo veel mogelijk gezichten en kentekens van auto’s onzichtbaar.
