The procession of LA VARA in Messina, Sicily, is a religious celebration of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary into Heaven with ancient rituals taking place every year on the 15th of August, where more than two thousand people dressed in white and barefoot, carry a special votive machine built for the first time in 1535 in honor of Emperor Charles V, the “Vara”, around the city.
