Who knew Street Art meets Singapore Nostalgia could be so retro-edgy?

These are from a stencil and freehand live graffiti showcase by slacsatu and clogtwo from ZincNite Crew for the National Heritage Board’s I Heart Museums roadshow.

I think ZNC are tha bomb, and their work around Youth Park bleeps like a beacon of life in an otherwise grey landscape.

For a girl who likes to think she’s real shiny and smart, it’s always kind of a dark jolt to the solar plexus when things happen in a way she can’t explain. It’s not pretty to feel naïve.

In such (rare!) situations, she likes to cruise blackly through the afternoon with a camera, Nirvana grunging out of the ‘Pod, then get drunk in some glittering sweaty disco cave and wink at handsome strangers until something takes. (This post is trying to focus on Part I of this scenario, o my butterflies, but more on grooving and intrigue shortly.)

Feeling exhausted by hours of staring at street trash until it looked like art, I moved the whole operation to the Hamburger Bahnhof, where they have little signs to TELL you politely that the two basketballs floating in a fish tank are DEFINITELY ART.

But I didn’t come here to hate on the Bahnhof. Somehow I think an hour of the looming abstracted weirdness of Warhol and Beuys and Twombly were just what I was wanting. Sometimes, shit ain’t tryin to make sense, they told me. Word, I said.

Emerging freshly cultured into an unexpected blue neon glow was the moment that saved me. Feeling deliciously solid & self-contained, I light the evening’s first cigarette; then time starts up again, I take a drag and I stride on into Saturday night, beaming electric blue poise.

Well folks…

It’s been a hectic week in urban planning land, and the pressure is only going to ratchet up as the end of term approaches. Right now I am swamped in notes about form-based codes, zoning regulations, bylaws, potential initiatives and subsidies. Did you know that the City of Montreal has a bylaw prohibiting street vending and has recently passed another which will effectively eliminate the beloved horse carriages of Old Montreal?

I’ve been putting a lot of thought into putting out a small street art and idea book in the new year. I’ve been thinking of how there is little overlap in terms of practical ideas on streetart, public space planning and design, and architecture, and the little bits that do exist are inevitably geared towards official, bureaucratic channels.

I’d like to put out a small, 40-page-maximum book with pictures of some of my streetart pieces, bits of writing about the Swap Box Project, and maybe pictures of other Swap Boxes that others have made around the world. I’d also like for it to include some ideas about what can be done with interactive street art and people/groups/organizations that one can network with to get more done…

I’ve also had a photojournalism student friend of mine follow me around on a streetart mission and take some pictures of a Swap Box in use…so when she gets back to me I’ll post some actual professional-quality pics.

Heute mal ein kleiner Hinweis für alle Freunde der Populärkultur. Das kleine Städtchen Münster (Westfalen) ist mit einer FH für Gestaltung gesegnet, die einen recht guten Ruf hat.

Erfreulicherweise sind die Studenten dieser Einrichtung auch außerhalb der Uni recht aktiv und so wird an diesem WE in der Kettlerstraße  (münsteraner Kreuzviertel) ein ganzes Haus mit Kunst und Kultur versorgt.

We threw this up last week in Hayes Valley. It’s fairly large 8ft X 16ft. There’s really no quick way to do this, so the best bet is to just simply act like you’re suppose to be there. I used to hit this wall quite a bit, but lately it had been taken over by illegal advertising. Posters of the latest dumb ass romantic comedy or Sting’s new album available at Starbucks, shit like that. So I decided to take it back. Everything is cool until the guy who owns the lot rolls up. This is generally the ultimate bull shitting challenge. Convince the guy who owns the property that you are ACTUALLY suppose to be there and there was just some miscommunication. It can be done. This particular guy however hated the illegal ads as much as us. So with his blessing we proceeded to finish. Working under permission can be quite liberating. Additionally I got to chat with the owner of Blue bottle coffee, who is apparently a fan. Which is nice because I too am a fan of his coffee.
All and all good day in Hayes Valley.

I’ve been pursuing my very own Grand Question for over a year now. That is the question of where the link between street art, architecture and urban design lies. And can one introduce memetics into the mix? I’ve gotten a lot of my ideas through images of others’ work that I’ve seen, and some of my best ones have come about through adapting other projects for the streets (for example, one of my original inspirations for the Swap Box was the Berkeley Free Store)

How then to design someting that is simple, easily replicable and also functional and useful (in that it improves its surroundings by creating new possibilities for public space)? Many projects which fit the first two categories really don’t work too well when the third is considered.

Then there’s the question of how to work my love for street art into urban planning and design (which I’m currently studying). I’ve found that when street art is mentioned in relation to architecture or urban studies in a non-negative way(and here I mean non-graffiti streetart) it’s the aesthetic that is being considered rather than the transformative potential.

One interesting idea which I recently stumbled on is that of Parasitic Architecture
I’m not personally sure where this concept originated- I think it came from Peter Cook’s Archigram Group- but I find it fascinating. Of course, the problem with any kind of design theory is that you’ve gotta sort through heaps of theoretical babble in hopes of finding one or two good inspirational ideas.

Cook, in some interviews, has talked about the need to create an urban environment that is amenable to addings-on. He’s designed a building in Lisbon that creates space for ground-floor kiosks and buskers within its exterior shell…

Would this be an example of something that inevitably breaks down and gets used by homeless people and junkies to the exclusion of all else? Or what could happen if passers-by and users took an interest in it?

Schöne Straßenkunst von Mentalgassi!

Swoon ist eine Straßenkünstlerin aus New York, die bekannt ist für ihre lebensgroßen Stencil-Schablonen und braunen Papier “Graffitis”. Obwohl es sich um Straßenkunst handelt und es viele Leute als Vandalismus ansehen,muss man in diesem Bespiel nur sagen, wir brauchen mehr davon….!

Ihre Abbildungen sind gut plazierte Kunstwerke, die meist Menschen zeigen und einen Linolschnittzeichenstil haben.

Es gibt ein super Video von ihr auf gestalten.tv, (meinem absoluten Lieblingsverlag) in dem sie Räumlichkeiten in einer Galerie bespielt—unglaublich wie viel Arbeit! Hoffe es gefällt euch!
