* StreetLab Background:
In an experimental and human-centered design approach we seek to understand young people in urban context. To enable the research about authentic experiences in every day live, we “moved” the laboratory onto the street, thereby combining a semi controlled environment with a situation of permanent field research. Thus our aim was loosen the borders between laboratory and field research as an experimental hybrid approach.  In view of growing diversification and the multi ethnic urban society in the global context, we focus our research on heterogenic urban neighborhoods. We look on how to employ mobile Information-Communication-Technology to facilitate creativity, understanding and social/environmental sustainability.

In our Sense-Parcour-Workshop (17 august 09), we discussed and experienced the “sense” with kids and teenagers, that actually don’t have visual or accustical impairment.
What is it like, when you can suddenly not hear or feel any more? How about orientation without seeing? How to “speak” without “talking”?

T0gether at first we explored the neighbourhood, partly with covered eyed or with special headphones, which temporarily make you almost deaf.

Back in the StreetLab, we tried out, how to submitt certain informations without speaking or hearing. E.g. via gesture, mimics, body Language…

Our Workshop with with deaf Teenagers at the StreetLab (13 august 09) was interesting and fun. We had two Sign Language Translators to support us. We talked about specifics and properties of Deaf Life. What are typical problems for Deaf People, but also: What are the benefits of deaf communication. Interesting: The participants considered around 50% disadvantages and 50% advantages of being deaf!
Afterwards we collected first ideas and developed first concepts and rapid prototypes for wise products.
We are looking forward to repeating our workshop sessions with the people from SINNESWANDEL in octobre.

Our yesterday’s kids-workshop on navigation and (mobile) communication by different senses (see post below!) was awesome:

We had a full day outdoor workshop with kids between the age of 3 to 12 years. It was difficult to count them, but we guess during the whole day it was roundabout 70 of them or so.

Together we explored how you navigate without seeing, how do you communicate without spoken language, we discussed the potential of visual communication and symbolic languages, and in the workshop “touch- and feel-mobiles (“Fühl-Handy”)” the kids produced little prototypes that dealt with the topic of sensitive surfaces: (“How should your mobile feel like, if a certain person calls you” or “How do ‘Heat’, ‘Sadness’, ‘Rain’, ‘Fun’ or ‘Beeing Bored’ feel on your mobile?”)

Here’s some impressions:

“Audio-Memory” (“Hör-Memory”):

In this game the kids got an idea of what it is like to use other senses then the usual ones. Unlike a classical “memory-game”, where you visually have to find pairs of similar pictures, in this game the kids had to listen (and also feel, weight and maybe even smell) in order to find the right pairs:

“Visual Communication / Symbolic Language”:

In this workshop the kids explored the idea of communication without written or spoken language. Together we tried typical sentences and words you (or actually: the kids) normally use on your phone, like “How are you”, “The sun is shining”, “I am tired”, “Shall we go outside?”, “My brother is repairing his car?”.
In a first step, we asked them to draw little icons for certain sentences/words (“i feel good/bad” etc…).
In a second step the kids drew little icons and the others (including us) had to guess, what they wanted to tell us.
The kids thereby got an idea of what the job of a communication- or information-designer is about – in this case: by using small space and and single color to make complex situations understandble and bring them to the point:

“Touchable! Feel your Mobile” (“Fühl-Handy”):

In this workshop the kids produced little prototypes that dealt with the topic of sensitive surfaces: (“How should your mobile feel like, if a certain person calls you” or “How do ‘Heat’, ‘Sadness’, ‘Rain’, ‘Fun’ or ‘Beeing Bored’ feel on your mobile?”).
Therefore they tried out different material and haptics, which lead to amazing results. For example some had the wish/idea that different (favorite) partners of communication or functions should have different buttons, that feel different:

The Workshop was called “Schärfe Deine Sinne” (”Sharpen your senses”).
These were only a few impressions of it. We’ll do more stuff at the StreetLab in august.

This is creepy in that 70’s children’s movie sort of way, where everything is very pleasant, but also filled with unsettling wrongness.
The song is quite nice though. I’m looking forward to the inevitable remixes.

And of course, some tracks.
First, a pair of Choose Your Own Adventure remixes, one by Streetlab and one by Flosstradamus. Streetlab offers a darker, busier take, while Flosstradamus aims for the dance floor, but both are worth a listen.

Next, this Dubka remix of Ultraviolence, which is the most pitch-perfect replication of an 80s action movie anthem I’ve ever heard. If you need to run up and down stairs like Rocky, you’d be hard pressed to find a better song.

“Streetlab might bring to mind old-school bigbeat acts like the Chemical Bros and Crystal Method, but their sound is all their own with a harder and four-four rock rhythm which is straight up for dancing. There is no cohesiveness to this post, apart from the fact that all of these songs would sound very good on drugs. If you need a break from the high-speed, screaming booze-fests we typically post, try these out on your “ketamine and syrup” friends.

Royksopp’s single has been everywhere, but I’m particularly liking Holy Fuck’s version, with it’s “holy shit, the sun’s already coming up” feel. Since we’re still far from the peak of the remix-wave this track is generating, a version without vocals is more than welcome.

Duke Dumont takes on an uncharacteristically hip-hop-leaning, dubstep approach here, sounding like a smoothed out Flying Lotus. This is a Lily Allen remix in name only– the tiny vocal snippets could be anyone– but that’s really not the point; the smoky, stoned-out vibe Dumont has created would perfectly soundtrack any lazy sunday, with or without the attention-whoring name attached. Let’s hope the Duke continues along this vein.

Streetlab is an absolutely prolific remix team, and this one easily lives up to the quality of their best. Perfect for getting your more heavily drugged out friends dancing. Definitely the best remix of this track out there.

Vorig blok en in de post hieronder postte ik namens Renoud, Steven en mezelf onze cross media campagne voor Streetlab voor het vak Cross Media Strategie. Onze pitch van de campagne werd ook met het hoogst mogelijke cijfer beoordeeld.

Om uw geheugen even op te frissen. Ons idee was ‘the blank concept’, een campagne om jezelf als jonge artistiekeling van streetlab op de kaart te zetten.

Onze campagne steunde op de strategie om met blanke, lege, witte mediatypes te werken; esthetisch witte posters, aanplakbiljetten, muren en een magna doodle waar je met zo’n magnetisch pennetje op kan schrijven. Een visual van het idee ter ondersteuning:

Héél toevallig, of hoogst waarschijnlijk niet zo heel toevallig. Wie weet. Start Boomerang Create een campagne in Amsterdam met blanke, lege, witte abri’s. Toevallig?

Het kan natuurlijk zijn dat ze dit zelf bedacht hebben. Ik bedoel boomerang IS een creatieve organisatie. Daarentegen zal het niet de eerste keer zijn dat concepten van studenten overgenomen worden door grote bedrijven. Jatwerk en plagiaat noemen we dat. Tuurlijk kunnen we niets bewijzen, maar ik vind het in ieder geval net iets té toevallig…

EDIT: Natuurlijk moeten we blij zijn met de eer. Maar voor de eer krijg je geen studiepunten, laat staan dat je er een Macbook Pro voor koopt.

Years have passed since I actually was an initiated Hip Hop head. I was for real – I was painting graffiti, I was rappin´, breakdancing. I set up some jams with my Technics 1200 and turned wax. But youthful and delinquent years with brews with the crews soon turned into cocktails on hot clubs and the old rap tunes got replaced by heavy basslines and tranceish melodies. I grew apart from Hip Hop. But sometimes my old love for this lifestyle gets reminded. Even though I´m a bit less of the whole attitude thing in rap, there´s still afew guys out there who still have my sincere respect.  Jay Z and Kanye West are two of them. And nowadays I´m really impressed by Kanye West´s ability to create interesting things and cool collabos, such as the work with Daft Punk. And I actually have a scent of him turning more and more towards an electronic segment. Wheter or not he will, I´m still impressed by his kind of musical hybrid in which Urban meets some kind of House-ish tunes. So with that said, I´ll bring you three different mixes on his latest smash hit “Love Lockdown“. Enjoy!

First up, let’s talk about Soulwax. The electro-rock-and-remix outfit from Belgium have been making their own sweet sweet music for over a decade, but are definitely most well-known for their top-notch remixes of club bangers like Justice’s “Phantom Pt. II” or Daft Punk’s “Robot Rock”, and understandably so. In a genre where remixes are hastily tossed together by adding a simple bassline and a few synths, it takes patience and a sensitive ear to make a remake that truly stands out. No templates, no trance remixes, no reggaeton-style bass patterns. Unique, reinventive takes on everything from dance-rock (LCD Soundsystem) to pop (Robbie Williams) to classic rock (Rolling Stones) is what Soulwax majors in. That’s why I wasn’t surprised to fall in love with their latest, an ear-catching remix of MGMT’s oft-remixed “Kids”. Check the remix below, and head on over to Pretty Much Amazing (a blog that’s…well…pretty much amazing) and download a recent set that Soulwax performed for the BBC about a month ago.

Elsewhere, for those who enjoy classic rock with a new twist, check out Streetlab’s block-is-too-hot remix of CCR’s classic “Fortunate Son”. Much like their incredible remix of “Gimme Shelter”, the DJ duo from Brooklyn update an American staple, reviving a song that needs no revival (get, cause it’s Creedence Clearwater Revival…revival…get it?) but rather a supplement that lends dance-rock accessibility to the legendary track. More news on these guys (including their debut EP) coming in the next few days.
