Yesterday I ran in the Silicon Valley Turkey Trot. I walked the 5k with some friends and their child

Yesterday I ran in the Silicon Valley Turkey Trot. I walked the 5k with some friends and their children two years ago; this year a friend and I were running the 10k.

What a difference two years has made in this event. There were about 11,000 participants — which was apparently about 3,000 more than expected. The PortaPotties were not well placed. Most of them were actually found at the end of the race rather than the beginning. The race used chip timing so Kristy and I decided that we would wait until the race started to go to the PortaPottie; hopefully the crowd would have thinned out by then.

Kristy and I started about ten minutes after the gun and there was still a huge crowd trying to cross the start line. Once we crossed it, we were able to start a slow run. During the first two miles, we had to weave around all of the walkers. Once the 5k runners split off, we were able to run without forward easily.

The only problem that I had with this run was when my hamstring tightened up during the last two miles. This happens when I run on pavement but never happens when I run on trails for some reason. I had to stop and stretch twice because I was losing some range of motion in my right hamstring. I would have felt bad for Kristy’s time except that she was actually registered for the 5k so her time was going to look pretty slow anyway.

We finished the race in a disappointing 1:04:48 and according to my Garmin, we ran 6.39 miles. All that weaving around walkers added up. Traditionally, walkers stay to the right and runners to the left, but many people don’t know or follow that convention.

The finish area was a madhouse. We somehow missed the line for water. We got our goodie bags with no difficulty but the t-shirt tables were crazy chaos. Some of the teenage volunteers were getting pretty frustrated with the crowd (and rightfully so!) I almost gave up on my medium shirt but I always get a shirt. (My sister once made an awesome quilt for me out of several old running shirts.)

I think had I taken walk breaks, my hamstring would not have tightened up so badly. If I stretched every day, thought, I wouldn’t have these issues with my hamstring.

Did you get distracted? Hit a mental brick wall? Lost your train of thought? Ate too much Thanksgivi

Did you get distracted? Hit a mental brick wall? Lost your train of thought? Ate too much Thanksgiving Turkey? No problem. Yoga’s balancing poses help you to focus, center, and be aware. When I get distracted or lose my train of thought, I do Tree Pose. It takes a lot of focus and concentration to complete Tree Pose, so after you’ve gotten in the pose, use that focus to finish writing.

You can use the desk to balance you, if necessary. Tree Pose is good for refocusing and centering your mind. When you are writing/working, there are often distractions or your mind might start to wander. Just stand up and do Tree Pose, making sure that you tailbone is tucked in, your shoulders are down & back, your abdominal muscles are engaged, and your gaze is focused on a non-moving object.

Stand up straight in proper posture, which means that all parts of your body are engaged. You are the trunk of the tree, strong and powerful. Tucking your tailbone in, tightening your buttocks, pressing your shoulders down and back, and raising your knees helps you to balance better. You can place your foot at your ankle, below your knee on your shin, or above your knee on your thigh. Just do not place your foot on your knee. After you get your foot positioned, turn your knee outward, which means that your inner thigh is turned straight ahead and your knee is pointing to the side. Lift your neck and head.

Concentrate, inhale through your nose, and bring your palms together in prayer position at heart level. Balance. When you feel balanced, you can raise your palms above your head. You can stop here or you can keep going and widen your arms above your head. Now, you are the tree branches and leaves, soaring, steady, and strong. As you inhale, imagine yourself breathing in light, energy, positivity, and power.

When you are ready to exit Tree Pose, bring your hands into prayer position, exhale, and bring your hands down to prayer position at heart level. As you exhale, expel all toxins, frustrations, mental blocks, and self-deprecating thoughts. Place your foot back on the floor, and raise the other leg.

Namaste and Happy Writing,

Pain is temporary. Quitting lasts forever. Lance Armstrong

And wonder of wonders my wife worked out with me. This is a wonder because I’ve asked her numerous times to work out with me in our near 20 year relationship and it has been a rare thing. Also, she actually asked me if she could work out with me about a week or so ago, maybe even two weeks ago and we just got to it. I’m looking forward to continuing this journey together. We started out with the introductory Turbulence Training workout for sedentary people.

As most of you know by now, Zara is becoming a big name in the fashion world. Bringing the world professional suits, flirty skirts, shirts and trousers in both men’s and women’s collection, this is one name that absolutely will not to be forgotten. Now, Zara is offering shoes that will blow your mind with a variety of colors, styles, sizes, and prices. The creators at Zara have brought something to the table for everyone to try, and have made it possible for just about anyone to walk the street in style with their affordable prices.

Some brand name shoes cost up to five hundred dollars if not more, you can find Zara’s brand name styles for as little as one hundred and sometimes less than that, I’ve seen as low as forty dollars online! However, these aren’t your run of the mill cheap shoes; Zara shoes are gorgeous and can make anyone look good. Zara offers women strapped heeled sandals, thick pumps, flats, and many other various styles. By offering so many styles, Zara is creating something for everyone and gives everyone a reason to check them out.

Zara also offers men’s shoes, and while this collection is less popular, it is still a decent collection. Zara shoes for men offers sandals, traditional laced up sneakers and more unique edgy sneakers for those looking to try a bolder look. The men’s collection of Zara shoes is quickly becoming a big trend, what’s most unique; the Zara trend is to wear sandals with long business like trousers. Shockingly enough, this trend has caught on and looks pretty good on men everywhere.

This season, it seems that Zara is experimenting with flats for both men and women. In bold colors like purple and yellow, both men and women are treading the streets with bold colored flat sneakers that look so awkward, it works for them. That seems to be the Zara way though, they have made a fortune off of making things that just shouldn’t work look fabulous on anyone and they have taken styles that are considered traditionally ugly, and made them stylish. That is what fashion is all about, and that is one of the biggest reasons people are clinging to Zara this season, everyone is oozing wondering what will be next for this daring clothing brand.

Have you ever noticed that some 10K runs are actually open to people who want to do a 10K walk? We might assume that the walkers would get run over by the runners but this is far from the truth. In most cases the walkers are accepted as part of the group.

Many people enjoy taking a leisurely 10K walk instead of training to run that distance. They enjoy the scenery as they walk by it and they like the excitement of the race. Some of these races will have a competitive walking division while others will just give space to the walkers.

As an example, sometimes the walkers will start before or after the runners so that they can be at their own pace. Some people are going to just walk casually for the 10K walk and if that is the case they won’t need a lot of training to do it. However if you want to be competitive with your walking you will need to train for the 10K walk.

If you just want to take this stroll make sure that your running shoes are comfortable and that you have been practicing walking 45 to 90 minutes steady. This should have been done in the last month or two of your interest in the 10K walk.

You will want to know that a 10K walk is actually 6.2 miles. You will want to make sure you practiced a bit before you try to do this in a race because you will want to finish this distance. In general people who do a 10K walk actually train for it over an 8 week period. This seems to be standard if you want to walk in competition.

One of the most important areas you will need to master is the art of race walking. This gets you moving at a very fast pace if competition is on your mind. There are also rules for race walking: You have to have one foot on the ground all the time and the leg that is moving forward has to be straight at your knee until it is under your body vertically. This will help you do a better 10K walk as well.

Some people who decide to do a 10K walk may be former runners who either decided to stop running or had to stop because of injuries or illness. The good thing about this type of race is the fact that people in wheelchairs can also be a part of it.

There are many senior citizens who enjoy a 10K walk because it is exhilarating and because they can do it over a long period of time. This is a sport that combines physical fitness with a competitive focus for some. However, you can race walk at a leisure pace if that is what you want to do.

If you are interested in a 10K walk it is a good idea to talk to others who have done it. You may just find a buddy or two to walk with you.

So you are considering printing your own wedding invitations, this is surely a money saving idea. The cost to print wedding invitations professionally is not cheap and you can obtain similar quality by printing on blank wedding invitations.

There are many types of blank printable wedding invitations on the market, especially online. You can find almost any wedding theme blank you are looking for online or at your local print store. I would suggest to first of be sure of how you want your wedding invitations to look before you go shopping. You don’t want to get confused and spend to much time trying to make a choice of what to buy.

Start shopping for your blank printable invitations early enough as a precaution. You don’t want to find out at the last minute that the design you want is on back order. For this very reason you should also have a second pick after you have located your first preference.

If you decide to do the printing yourself you would either be using an inkjet printer which most people have at home or a laser jet. Make sure you know what kind of printer you will be using and double check to make sure the blank printable wedding invitations you purchase will be compatible with the printer.

Laser jet printers offer a better quality print than an inkjet printer and they don’t cost as much as they used to. Consider purchasing a small laser jet printer for your invitations, its an overall good investment even after your wedding printing. The cost per page for printing is a lot less than an inkjet printer.

Make sure you also buy enough extra blank invitations, you will have a learning curve so you will need a few for your test runs and also incase of any mistakes you will make when printing.

Its also a good idea to have another eye check over your invitations as you print, they might detect errors you might not be able to catch.

After finally managing to mount the new LCD TV on the wall of my living room I sat back to admire my

After finally managing to mount the new LCD TV on the wall of my living room I sat back to admire my new toy. As pretty as it looked hanging there in mid air, I realised that I was going to have to do something about the dangling wires. The black and red tubes sprouting from the back of the TV were hanging like unwelcome snakes from the branch of a tree, right down from the middle of my cream coloured wall and onto the carpet.

After contemplating my predicament for half an hour I realised that I had one of two choices. Either I could learn to live with the wires as they were (possibly painting the entire living room in a darker colour so as to blend in with the rubbery cables) or I could buy something to stick in front of them.

I had already spent a small fortune on the TV however I didn’t much fancy the task of painting the whole of my living room another colour just to camouflage a few unsightly wires. Taking what I thought was the more sensible of the two options I hopped on the computer to try and find some shelf fitments that I could put in under the TV. It would have to be something big because the TV was quite high on my wall and I would need it to house the DVD player and the freeview box, then there was also the XBOX and the Playstation to think about.

After a week or so of scouring the web (I live in a rural area so choice of furniture shops are minimal) I eventually found something that looked almost ideal. The measurements fitted perfectly and the colour of the wood would be perfectly in keeping with the rest of my living room furniture.

After buying and paying for the piece I waited eagerly for its delivery. Taking a day off work on the estimated arrival date I sat by the front door and waited. After a few hours a huge truck pulled up outside and a hairy looking man popped out holding a clipboard. When the formalities were over I helped him carry the box to my door, thanked him and left.

After a few hours of assembling I pushed the new fitment across the carpet and under the television. It fitted perfectly and looked brilliant. The varnished wood creating a pleasant reflection from the television on it’s highly polished surface.

I sighed and stood back to admire my work, made a cup of tea and sat down with the remote control. It was then that I discovered a problem.

The shelf fitment was a crucial centimetre too high. To change the channel with the remote control I had to stand up to point the buttons at the right part of the TV, completely taking away the actual point of having a remote control. A semi remote it now was.

I bought the LCD to improve my quality of life. I guess I’ll have to settle for stronger thigh muscles.

For a range of items from electronic goods to garden products, furniture, a cheap LCD TV through to a new computer to clothing and even a four poster bed, Shopping.com is a great way to find products online, and includes product reviews.

The type of shoe that a team wears can make the difference between a safe and success season or a se

The type of shoe that a team wears can make the difference between a safe and success season or a season full of failed stunts, injuries and tons of blisters if you are cheerleader. In many stunts, cheerleaders hold other cheerleader by the shoes. Things can turn pretty bad if you are not prepared with the right shoes.

To make sure that you start out your “cheer” career on the right foot, here a few guidelines that can help you choose the right Cheerleading Shoes to provide you with a high performance.

Price- As in most things you get what you pay for. The price you pay for a Cheerleading shoe can make a difference in the quality of the shoe. It cannot only affect the comfort, but also the durability and upkeep. It can range from approximately $20 to $70 with the average shoes running from $30 to $50.

Comfort-Nothing can make you more uncomfortable than a pair of uncomfortable shoes. Look for good cushioning, flexibility, lightweight and breathability in your Cheerleading shoes. Fit/Size- Insure the fit of your Cheerleading shoes. If possible try them on before you purchase them or make sure you can return them if they don’t fit properly.

Features- You’ll want a shoe that is as lightweight as possible but still offers the most comfort, support and durability. Look for any added features such as finger grips, flexibility, shock absorption, scalloped archways and ankle support. Always choose a shoe that meets the needs of your activity, keeping in mind the upkeep of the shoe and if necessary weatherproofing.

Style- Your Cheer squad will probably require you to have a certain color shoe. Most Cheerleading Shoes come in white with added team color insertions. So check the style you’re ordering to be sure they meet your needs in style and colors.

Running is a vigorous and a tough all over body workout. Many injuries can be caused by failing to stretch after a running work out and it is even more important to stretch after running to ensure that your muscles have time to lengthen and return to their normal form.

I have been involved in running for over 15 years and there are a number of reasons why you should spend time stretching after running these include:

1. Improves flexibility and recovery after running

Running takes a hard toll upon your body and particularly muscles and tendons. During running your muscles become contracted (shortened) as you tense your body and as they have to adapt to running surfaces. Stretching after running will re lengthen them and improve flexibility and also promote a faster recovery. If you’ve ever felt stiff a few hours after running or for a number of days afterwards, this is the effect of lactic acid on your muscles.

Tip: To see the benefit of stretching, try running without stretching afterwards and then next time take time out to do a 10 minute warm down of stretches. Compare how you feel after doing both and you’ll notice the benefit of stretching.

2. Reduce the effects of lactic acid on your body

During exercise your body works hard to produce energy for your muscles. This is especially so for runners who need a constant flow of energy to keep their muscles moving. If you body is unable to get sufficient oxygen it starts to produce lactic acid which attacks muscles and causes you to become more susceptible to exhaustion, causing you to slow down.

As you rest and your body is able to restore normal levels of oxygen, lactic acid reduces and the muscles return to normality. Lactic acid is bad for your body and gentle stretches after running can help to stretch out tried tendons and muscles and speed up the process of lactic acid leaving the body. As your muscles are also more susceptible to small tears after a build up of lactic acid, stretching after running will also help you relax your muscles by gently lengthening them after they become shortened during exercise.

Suggested warm down program of stretches after running

1. Walk around for 5 minutes to help your muscles to relax and avoid them going into spasms.

2. Stretch out calf muscles (muscles directly behind your knees)

3. Ham String Stretches (These are the muscles at the back of your legs that lead up to your bum) Some of the most common injuries for runners occur to these)

4. Stretch Quadriceps (these are the opposite side of your ham string in your thigh area) These often hurt a lot after doing exercise and you’ll notice them particularly when you try and sit down and cross your legs.

5. Stretch your lower back. These takes a huge beating after running, especially on concrete and it can be painful and sore after a long run.

Now that disclaimer is out of the way, ya boy Hotdogs would proudly like to present Rosa Acosta. She brings that fire. I don’t care that other blogs have already covered her. She’s like Moss on a streak route, she better be double and triple covered.

En fuego! Ol’ girl is definitely somewhere in the 718-819 range on the Area Code Scale.

They say a picture says a thousand words. Well then what would this video say? A million? A trillion? I’m gonna have say like when you turn on the Game Genie cheat code for lives, that there are INFINITE words for this video:

If you only have a few seconds for a quick peek at the video fast forward to 2:07 or 3:14 and be amazed. On second thought there aren’t any words you can say about this video. I was pretty much speechless the entire first time I watched it. Rosa Acosta, you can get it.

Don't let your skinny jeans stop you from eating it all (twice) on Thanksgiving! The two things

Don't let your skinny jeans stop you from eating it all (twice) on Thanksgiving!

The two things I love most about fall are the food and the fashion, which means Thanksgiving is a major jackpot. I get to dress up all cute and stuff my face with turkey. It’s wonderful…for the first ten minutes. Then my stomach begins to protrude over my skintight mini and I start having a hard time breathing. Undoubtedly I end up taking an intermission, putting on my stretchy sweatpants, then heading back for seconds.

But it doesn’t have to be that way. It’s possible to look cute and eat until you’re curled up on the couch in a food coma. You just have to choose your outfit wisely. I’ve combed through this season’s hottest trends and built outfits that are holiday appropriate, both in how they look and how they stretch to fit the 5 lbs of stuffing you will inevitably inhale. And I’m sure enjoying Thanksgiving dinner without the need to unbutton your pants at the table is something we can all be thankful for this year.

Leggings:
Leggings are not only comfortable (hello, elastic waistband!), but they are easy to dress up for a holiday meal. Skip the jeans this year and pair some basic leggings with a super cute, super trendy long cardigan. The stretchy pants will give you room to pack in all the pumpkin pie your heart desires, and – bonus! – the sweater will give you just a little more coverage over that protruding belly.

H81 Ankle Knit Leggings, Forever21,$4.90
Andrea Sweater in cream, Abercrombie, $70
Pasio Flats, Steve Madde, $41.97

Stretchy Skirt:
I love a good skirt. But hitting right below your belly button, AKA where all the food is going to settle, makes them far from Thanksgiving friendly. That is unless we take a hint from all those beautiful pregnant women who are experts at this sort of stomach stretching and go for an elastic waistband. Luckily, there are some really cute skirt options that provide style and the stretchy waistband we need. Just tuck a simple white tank in, add some flair in accessories and you can look good and still go up for seconds…or thirds.

Lace satin skirt, Forvever21, $15.80
Bridgette Mesh tank, Guess, $24.50
Crystal patch headband, Express, $19.50

The Dress:
Us girls will take any chance we can get to wear a dress, and Thanksgiving is no different. But save those tight mini’s and zip up dresses for when you get back to school. Going for an empire waistline will let you stay classy and appear slim no matter how full your belly gets. Pair with with some pumps or, even better for all those runs up to the buffet, a pair of flat boots.

Embellished flutter sleeve dress, Express, $49.50
Jessica Simpson Women’s Barg Knee-High Flat Boot, Endless.com, $138.95

I had my 49th birthday two weeks ago.

A week ago, I read through some old diaries of mine and the cycle of the same thoughts, the same resolutions every year zapped me.

I had to try to break out of this zone. Move out of comfort zone where I was rutted very comfortably.

And so here I am on my journey to do something a little different everyday; to stop saying ‘NO’ reactively to anything new; to be a little more creative with everyday life; to add a little more ‘mittai pink’ to my life.

Im not going to be flying a plane, or backpacking through Europe both of which I would love to do..but Oh my back !

But do what I can to change a little everyday and stretch as much as body and mind allow me to.

This is the record of my year till my 50th birthday comes around; on my own yellow Brick Road . The Red Shoes? I hope to acquire them soon !

Inspiration: The idea of making this year memorable and marking it in some way came from Laurie who has started a walking project and records her journey here at My Big Walk in a very inspiring way.

One of my clients had this weird problem today, his wallpaper wasn’t showing up on the desktop. Looking at his desktop, there appears to be a “X” icon on the top left on the screen. Its basically the same icon as a image error icon. Here is how I fixed the problem

at first I thought it might be a video card error or a drive update might be required however, when I logged into an administrator account the default desktop wallpaper was able to load just fine.

Check the image file and make sure it was not corrupted, load different default wallpaper image and still continue to have the same problem

Compared the wallpaper setting on the administrator and user’s

Noticed the position of the wallpaper was set to Center on the administrator and stretch on the users

Change the wallpaper to a Center position and problem was fixed!

… Everyone has to do it! It’s not really a yoga pose but since yoga is so much about opening your shoulders and aligning your spine, I think it works. Stand about 3 or 4 feet away from a wall or a table that’s about waist high. Take your feet hip distance and reach to the wall or table with your hands shoulder distance, taking your body into an right angle-like shape. Allow your shoulders and chest to sink down and your spine to come into its natural curve. Let your neck relax and look down. Take some deep breaths and feel your shoulders opening. I love doing this stretch all the time and I know you will, too.
