The Margay (Leopardus wiedii) is a spotted cat native to Central and South America. It is a solitary and nocturnal animal that prefers remote sections of the rainforest. Although it was once believed to be vulnerable to extinction, the IUCN now lists it as “Near Threatened”. It roams the rainforests from Mexico to Argentina. More here

You know those scanner bars that are found on packaging in the shops? You know, the ones with thick and thin lines that look like they’re some sort of code from caterpillars?

Back in the 80s, decade of skinny ties, Michael J. Fox, and Sheena Easton (whose style seems to have come back in the costuming of Rhianna, but nevermind), I had a dark blue shirt with dark black pinstripes (or perhaps it was a dark shirt that was pinstriped black and navy blue). It shimmered and flickered, possibly giving everyone a headache. And now that pinstripe look is back again, but changed a bit by the designers. So there’s the mermaid sweater from Hanne Falkenberg. This beauty as well (yummy rippled stripes). And this design for the wee set (Ravelry link right now).

I’m starting out small, to see if I like doing side to side designs. If I do, someday I may splurge on a Mermaid kit (purple/lilac/aubergine or black slate/cyclamen — it’s sort of delicious trying to decide without spending any money). But for now, between starting small projects and daydreaming about the time to complete my big projects, I’m back to knitting again. And it looks like pinstripes are in. Hurrah!

Our 18-year old baby Sylvia passed away the summer of ‘09. :’( At least she was happy and curled up in a blanket by out sunny window when she passed on. She is now in kitty heaven!

And what good would a blog be without pictures? Yes, you may officially call me a crazy old cat lady now…

1. Babybun

Babybun is my baby! I have had him since I was 7. My Gma even wrote him an ode…I may put that at the end of the post. We got Bunny from my stepbrother. He was keeping some cats at his apartment illegally and when they found out, they were evicted (the cats at least), so we took him!

2. Kat

How we got Kat and Onyx is an interesting story. The day their mother had them, she was hit by a car. We literally raised them from birth! Kat was the runt and Mom wasn’t sure he would make it through the night, but he did and now he is one of our biggest kitties!

3. Onyx

Kat’s sister. This picture is when she was just a baby! It is also my favorite stone and a character in a book I have been working on since 8th grade.

4. Clairvoyant

Claire is my cat from college. One night it was storming and my roommate, Jenn, and I heard a meowing in the night. We opened up our sliding glass door and in ran Claire. He just made himself at home and has been part of the family ever since!

5. Dusty

Dusty is also 18, she is my Grandma’s cat who lives with us! She’s very picky about what she eats and throws a fit if Kat or Onyx get in the room. She protests by going under the bed and pooping. Lovely…

6. Slinky

We got Slinky from one of my best friends, Sadie. She didn’t look like she was going to make it, but she is a healthy, beautiful kitten now!

Here is one of my besties, Sadie, who gave Slinky to me!

7. M-U

We got M-U from one of my little brother’s friends, Dustin. He was moving away with his mom and no longer allowed to keep her. So, of course, we took her in. She and Slinky are best friends.

8. Tasuki (Taz)

I named Taz back when I was into this anime/manga series, Fushigi Yuugi. He was one of the main characters on the show.

9. Patches

Patches is the brother of another one of kitties we lost to a car accident. His name was Boots. Patches had kittens with Eclipse (Twilight, Sneakers and Socks). Socks was named after Patches brother, Boots, as they look identical!

10. Citrus

Citrus is Patches’ arch nemesis for whatever reason. We found him by a dumpster at Rick’s C-Store here at the Lake. Another little kid was trying to coo him into the car, but he ran. When I tried, he came right to me and curled up in my lap!

11. A.C.E. (Attack Cat Extraordinaire)

ACE is my Mom’s baby, she likes to “hold him like a baby”, where she curls him on his back and cradles him like a small child. The crazy thing? He loves it!

12. Lisa

Lisa came from my old friend Shelby. She plead her case to my mother…they were moving and her Mom was either going to just leave them there or take them to the pound. We couldn’t let that happen…so lovely Lisa became our own!

13. Twilight (named before the books, thank you)

Twilight is a sweet, slinky (and fast!) kitty. He is one of Eclipse’s sons.

14. Eclipse

Eclipse is the big mama of Socks, Sneakers, Twilight, Lump of Coal, Naughty and Nice. Then we got her spaid.

15. Socks

Socks came to us from Eclipse and Patches. He was named after Patches brother, Boots, who looks just like him! Boots is on the left, Socks is on the right. Our little Bootsie passed away when he was hit by a car. They didn’t even stop. :’(

16. Naughty

Naughty is one of Eclipse’s sons, he and the next two are more ‘garage’ cats and they are hard to snap pictures of! He is tiger striped like Patches.

17. Nice

Nice is one of Eclipse’s daughters. She is also tiger striped.

18. Lump of Coal

Coal is black and white, he got his coat from his mama, Eclipse.

19. Sneakers

Sneakers is Socks’ brother. He looks more like his papa, Patches.

20. Amelia Pickford
Amelia is the second cat that goes to college with me. She was born on April 20, 2009. She is one of the cutest kittens I have ever seen and poses in the most un-cat like poses I’ve ever seen! She also likes to climb into anything she can fit!

21. Bagheera

Named after the black panther from Disney’s The Jungle Book (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J0xQ89pF5zo)

We recently got “Bags” from my friends Brady and Kaitlin.

22. Tiger

Tiger is another one of Eclipse’s. We haven’t been able to catch him yet, but he has the prettiest coat I have ever seen!

So, some sad news for me but some great news for everyone else. Knitty decided not to publish my pattern so I will be offering it on this site for free. Being a graduate student, I try to squeeze in as much knitting as possible during the summer months. This summer I was able to knit quite a few sweaters, but the endless standard stitch was getting to be a bit much. I missed my fair isle, wanted to play with cables, and was yearning to see some moss stitch. Thus, I created this bag to bust up my boredom with the textured moss stitch, fair isle, and cabling.

The finished product is an incredibly functional bag sized large enough to carry a decent sized laptop, books, or notebooks. Because it is fully lined with a knitted liner it is soft against your body while you are walking and offers some protection for the things you are carrying. The textured shoulder strap stays put, and the cable through the middle not only adds interest but keeps the strap from stretching out too much. There is a functional button band that adds interest to the bag, as well as allowing you to have a place to showcase some of your fun and unusual buttons. The fair isle adds durability to the structure of the bag as well as color to make it less dull. Simple cabling on the bottom of the bag not only adds some serious texture but does double duty as a type of ribbing, making the bottom of the bag stretchy.

Overall, the name of this bag says it all- it busts up the boredom with varying techniques and textures that will keep you interested the entire time.

I’ve been physically tired by the time evening rolls around, and my brain power isn’t much higher either.

This sweater, which I’ve knit before, is my evening knitting. I have much Love for Elizabeth Zimmerman.

I’m knitting the amoeba-like manta ray sweater thingity [aka BSJ]. My cousin is expecting at the end of December, and I wanted to knit something for her little one. There is enough stitch counting to keep me awake, but it’s all garter, so no thought involved there. I’m so glad I have this as my moving knitting.

I’ve already grown tired of dressing appropriately for the cold weather, although I’ve still been trotting round in a tweed blazer rather than a full-on winter coat, so taking a peak at Fam Irvoll’s SS10 collection has lifted my fashion spirits (which took a dent after seeing Heidi Montag wearing those sequinned Miu Miu socks early this morning).

Fam is a Norwegian designer who shows at Oslo Fashion Week and has just been taken on by Blow PR, so we’ll be seeing much more of her nutty knitwear over here.

After studying at the Ecole Supérieure des Arts et Techniques de la Mode, Fam came to Central St Martins for her BA (Hon) in Fashion Knitwear, graduating in 2008.

Fam’s colourful past collections have featured shrunked dolly dresses, sweaters with 3D ladybirds and ice lollies, ruffled prom dresses and a quirky mouse bustier top – all in eye-popping colours.  My personal diagnosis of Fam’s style would be part Sonia Rykiel crossed with Grayson Perry and My Little Pony – not a bad combo, I might add!

Celeb fans already include Mika and Lady Gaga, who apparently called up Fam and ordered a 3D cherry sweater and a cake headpiece.

But quickly on to Fam’s SS10 collection, I Love Gays, which is dominantly nautical with Hawaiian and 50s rockabilly influences.  It’s very sailor girl meets Dorothy with a bit of Dolly Parton thrown in for good measure.

For summer, Fam has traded in her magenta and purples for more primary colours like banana yellow, pillarbox red and cobalt blue.

The collection features embellished denim, flirty sailor dresses, tutti frutti prints, cherry print skirts, playtime tomboy shorts and a striped jumpsuit with a proud-looking 3D flamingo standing guard.

I absolutely adore the sparkling sailboat headpieces and there are plenty of other accessories to keep your wardrobe entertained, like blue and red bow bobby socks, ruby slippers and berry and floral headbands in the style of Brazilian samba queen Carmen Miranda.  It would really make my day if there was a Fred Butler or Tatty Devine collaboration on the cards – I reckon they could make some mad pieces together.

Fam runs her own club night, Neverland, in Oslo with her equally creative friends and like the name suggests, she gets inspiration from fairytales and east London/Oslo club kids. You can follow Fam’s crazy adventures and adorable outfits on her blog.
