Having already blogged about the new Strong Arm Steady album a month or two back, my excitement for the record has peaked based on the leaked tracks and a physical release date of January 26th. The record is in fact already available digitally from Stones Throw right here, but I’m personally waiting on the physical release rather than paying for MP3s. Additionally, that image above these words is the official album artwork, which is pretty stunning in itself.

Anyway, if, like me, you’re waiting on the January release date, then be sure to at least check out the leaked tracks – the latest of which (linked below) features Phonte from Little Brother. With production on this and Guilty Simpson’s new LP set for release in the first quarter of 2010, it looks like being another great year for Madlib.

Good to hear that Fat Freddy’s Drop (Local New Zealand Band) have tuned in the rest of the World, doing sold out concerts from LA, Frisco area, Paris to London. These guys absolutely deserve all the respect and energy they have been getting from their unique sound. The cool calm collective music which plays a key role in any Kiwis Summer road trip….I’m on my way home to be part of something which i have missed for so so long ! If you haven’t heard of them before than don’t feel alarmed but do check them out on youtube or the next time they roll through your town. Good music for Good People.

Produced by Madlib.  Guest appearances include Talib Kweli, Guilty Simpson, Little Brother’s Phonte, Planet Asia, Fashawn and a host of underground Los Angeles’s emerging rap talent.  Madlib is with out any doubt the hottest producer out there right now. He will be flipping beats faster than you can can flip pancakes. Seriously, the raw musician who can chop the whole renaissance era onto one track. True genius at work. 

The Xx are four 20-year-olds from South London who make predominantly slow, furtive pop music, mostly about sex. Cool album, and cool song which kind of portrays a gorgeous psycho-geographical love song. Definitely a London song, when wandering aimlessly around the wet streets.

Who kilt it?

As per usual Hip Hop super producer, Madlib, has been pretty busy recently. Alongside the high profile Madvillain 2 project which reports suggest is finally coming to fruition, Madlib has sole production responsibilities on new records from Guilty Simpson and Strong Arm Steady. It’s the latter of these two releases that I’m most interested in, and the three tracks I’ve heard out of Stones Throw so far (via the podcast) suggests it should be pretty tight.

The record, entitled Stoney Jackson, is expected to drop some time before the end of the year, containing 16 tracks and collaborations with the likes of Talib Kweli, Guilty Simpson and Planet Asia. For me, Madlib is one of, if not the best, producer in hip hop at the moment, who continues to produce beats that sound fresh and interesting. I’m glad he’s working on pure hip hop projects again, and can’t wait to see what he does with this Strong Arm Steady record.
