Mike Comrie just hasn’t looked like himself and hasn’t been playing like it either. He did have a bad case of the flu and it was also uncovered that he suffers from asthma. That’s enough to make you sick but unlike his other teammates who had the flu and got over it, Comrie never did.

On Thursday, Oilers head coach Pat Quinn explained why. “He’s got mononucleosis. He went and got a blood test and the tests came back normal on his spleen but right away they detected it and he’s got mono.”

That does help him understand why his season along with his health has taken a turn for the worst.

“It helps explain a few things about Mike,” Quinn said. “He just didn’t have any energy and it showed in his results on the ice so at least it all adds up.”

The 29-year-old started the season with a five-game point streak and then missed a pair of games because of the flu on Oct. 24 and 25. Comrie returned and played a game before missing three more. It was at that point Comrie’s asthma came to light which literally made it hard for him to breathe and subsequently play.

Yet, upon his return, Comrie had two goals in his first two games back. Since then he hasn’t had a point in four contests and it all came to a head Monday against Columbus when the winger had no shots and played less than 11 minutes.

Instead of getting better the Oilers forward got worse. That is before the diagnosis was finally provided.

“We’ve been told he can’t play through this virus,” Quinn explained. “This could be a three-week thing? it could be five weeks. We just don’t know but he can’t play until it works his way through his system.”

Comrie signed a one-year deal in September for his second tour of duty in Edmonton.

Russell Simmons’ critique of Bill Cosby has struck a nerve with rappers featured on the actor/comedian’s forthcoming Hip-Hop album, Bill Cosby Presents the Cosnarati: State of Emergency.

On Wednesday (Nov. 4), Simmons spoke out against Cosby’s criticism of Hip-Hop and the conduct of today’s youth in a blog about the entertainer.

Despite expressing his admiration and respect for Cosby, Simmons feels Cosby’s attacks have undermined his “pure and good” intentions of motivating youth to realize their potential for success.

“Bill Cosby is an example of someone from the older generation who has consistently blamed the poets and asked suffering community members to bare the full burden of guilt for the struggles that they endure,” the Hip-Hop mogul wrote on Globalgrind.com. “What they don’t understand is that the young people who they criticize did not create their own realities.”

Cosnarati, which features appearances from rappers Supa Nova Slom, Jace the Great, represents the comedy veteran’s efforts to bridge the generational gap and inspire social change with socially conscious rap songs.

According to Jace the Great, the television and movie star realizes the power of Hip-Hop culture as “a means to reach more youth not to condemn them.”

“It is clear to see Cosby has actually moved beyond just addressing or blaming the youth,” Jace the Great told AllHipHop.com.

“He is working from an intergenerational standpoint not only by involving us emcees who come from the Hip-Hop generation and lifestyle but he also spoke openly to the elder generation about their involvement and accountability,” said the rapper. “Point blank, the problem right now is there is a state of emergency in our communities and we need to act fast.”

According to Supa Nova Slom, Simmons should focus more on what Cosby is doing now rather than dwell on past comments.

“I respect Russell Simmons for all of his contributions to Hip-Hop culture but I hope that people do not get distracted and lost in his critiques of Cosby’s past comments … Cosby is taking a whole other route by investing in politically charged Hip-Hop that does not condemn but instead inspires and uplifts during a time when there is next to none of that happening in the music industry,” the rapper stated.

With Cosnarati, Supa Nova Slom hopes listeners will be motivated to make changes to elevate themselves and their community. So much so, the rapper cites the past as inspiration for taking charge in the struggle for progress.

“It is all of our jobs to play a role in creating a collective movement. People need to be inspired and empowered again to get involved just as we got involved during the Civil Rights and Black Power Movements,” Supa Nova Slom explained. “This CD hopefully will inspire not only conversations, but also actions, programs, and raised self-esteem.”

by Peter Struck Back in 1996, I had a correspondence with William F. Buckley, Jr., who, like many of those on the Right at the time, had a habit of claiming ownership over the ideas and spirit of the classical past. So it wasn’t altogether surprising to see him on television aligning himself with Socrates and pressing for the triumph of absolutes over relativism. What did catch my ear was that Buckley was arguing in favor of the death penalty, and was using Socrates to make his case. I couldn’t resist writing the man about the cruel irony of holding up as a poster boy for the death penalty the Western Tradition’s most famous victim of it. Buckley responded promptly, but never really engaged the most challenging issue: that Socrates, the paragon of classical rationalism, was deeply suspicious of that other signature legacy of his countrymen, democracy. He saw it as a system of government whose weakness was precisely that it rewarded those who could most artfully whip up a bunch of hot-headed boobs with the power to kill whoever displeased them. At its worst, it was rule by mob.

The archetype for Glenn Beck is a fifth century B.C. Athenian figure named Cleon, our first well-documented populist. Cleon represented a new class, made possible for the first time in democratic Athens. The notion that the whole people of Athens should participate in decisions collectively allowed for the rise of figures who presumed to speak for them. Cleon became wildly famous and successful not by coming from a powerful family, or by serving in regular office, but by delivering fiery speeches to thousands of Athenians in public. The Greek sources leave behind an unsparing portrait of an impulsive, histrionic bully. Aristotle tells us that “he was the first to use unseemly shouting and abusive language in the public assembly; and while it was customary to speak politely, he addressed the assembly with his cloak lifted up.” In Thucydides’ version, Cleon’s own lack of a pedigree provided him a plentiful source of resentment against those that had one, and he cast every self-aggrandizing gesture as a motivated by a love of the people over the aristocrats. He flattered his audience as being more capable of governing than the supposed experts in power. He personalized politics and under his influence those who disagreed with the state were referred to, for the first time in ancient Greece, as “haters of the people.” The comic playwright Aristophanes vividly portrayed him on stage as a man in a constant state of anger, his voice resembling the squeal of a scalded pig.

From Beck to Buckley

In the line from Cleon to Beck there is hardly a wiggle. Less obvious but telling is the connection between both these figures and Buckley. Driven by an unyielding sense of their own correctness, all three are experts in the trade of absolutes, always pressing toward a higher-contrast world of black and white. While it has become utterly common to see people in the public sphere assume such a posture, it does not stand to reason that they must. Among Republicans, for example, one used to see a strain based on intellectual modesty, of resistance to grand theories and attempts to explain everything. Eisenhower built a coalition around such principles that held up for decades. Obama may well be up to doing the same. In order to get on with fixing what it was possible to fix, they recognized the usefulness of an ability to live with a degree of uncertainty, a quality that Goldwater, and later George Bush and Karl Rove, vanquished from the Republican Party.

This Republicanism of certainty has had a good run, but it has likely reached the end of its appeal. David Brooks, whose sympathies attune with refinement to Eisenhower Republicanism, sounded its death knell in a recent column in the New York Times. If Beck’s days as the center of attention are numbered, as Brooks claims they are, it will not be because of his coarseness or his rejectionism, but because of his imperviousness to doubt. Intellectual hubris is tiresome in any case, but it is an especially odd standard to use to rally people who understand themselves as conservatives. Certainties are what one needs to upend things, and at a some point conservatives grow uncomfortable with that sort of thing. Cleon, that ancient voice of certainty, was not among the conservative lot at all, but a radical through-and-through.

While Buckley was of course right to point to Socrates as someone who endorsed the idea that there are absolutes, he missed the most important part of the story. The Greek philosopher was equally convinced that only a fool and a demagogue would claim to know them. If only Buckley were around to teach this lesson too.

Maybe being a saint means you are immune to what is beautiful.  And though you travel everywhere, you never stop and wonder, How?  Because nothing is ever so marvelous.  Because everything is always so marvelous.  And maybe even you catch yourself sometimes, looking up into the night and thinking, What?  But then, you touch your face, and maybe your hand is cold, and you say, So.  This is what it means to be a saint.  Not to be crowned with an aureole.  Not to be struck with five wounds or one between the eyes.  But to be home everywhere you go and see nothing is ever so beautiful except that it dies.

A historia é simples, muito simples, tao simples que chega até ser boba, mas o que sobressaiu foi a aplicacao da idéia na pratica. Quantos filmes com idéias excelentes ficam uma bosta ? Quantos filmes com historias ridiculas ficam visualmente demais ? Politisch ist großer Schaden entstanden und einmal mehr war unser Verteidigungs-Onkel Jung der Lage nicht gewachsen. Ist aber auch zweitrangig, denn erstens war das Unheil bereits geschehen und zweiten endet die Verantwortungskette bei Merkel. Die Kritik der Nato-Verbündeten an der deutschen Bundeswehr ist beachtlich und in dieser Form recht ungewöhnlich. Es scheint, man hat die Schnauze voll von den Weicheiern, die es nicht einmal wagen, einen Konflikt der inzwischen länger dauert als der zweite Weltkrieg, einen Krieg zu nennen. Als militärischer Laie frage ich mich, ob man das Lager Kundus nicht durch Panzer, Panzerfäuste oder RPGs zuverlässig gegen einen Angriff von der Straße hätte sichern können, ohne ein Gemetzel unter den Afghanen zu veranstalten? Als nächstes wird sich die Bundeswehr in Kundus wohl einigeln und nur noch Drohnen aus dem Lager lassen? Und die deutsche Politik? Es waren Schröder und Fischer, welche die Bundeswehr nach Afghanistan schickten. Es war Struck, der den unsäglichen Spruch abließ, dass Deutschland am Hindukusch verteidigt werden würde! Aber es war Merkel, die dem Elend seit ihrer Amtsübernahme nicht nur tatenlos zusah, sondern die Anzahl der deutschen Truppen vergrößerte ohne zuvor grundsätzliches geregelt zu haben! Schröder hat letzte Woche im Bierzelt im Wahlkampf von einem Ausstieg bis 2015 gesprochen. Das ist geradezu lächerlich! Die müssen sofort raus, d.h. in Jahresfrist muss der Abzug abgeschlossen sein!
Die Schrott-Ausrüstung können sie ja dort lassen, alles auf einen Haufen und die U.S. Air-Force rufen. Die regelt den Rest!
