“ Strange Beings found in the Deep”

That was a recent headline I read.  The article in the paper told about the ”Census of Marine Life.”  It’s a group of scientists and marine biologists from around the world who get together, with expensive equipment,  and explore the depths of the deep blue sea.

They’ve been discovering thousands of amazing creatures for the first time. 

 Here’s a .SLIDE SHOW of their discoveries.   Most of  the creatures have  flashing lights or glow.   Very cool. When you get back from the show, click on the video to listen to Stuart Townsend sing about how deep God’s love is for us.

Los grandes compañeros Asgardianos de Thor, Fandral, Hogun y Volstagg que usualmente aparecen juntos e incluso han formado el grupo Warriors Three, tambien aparecerán en la pantalla grande, con la venidera película de Thor en el 2011.

Fandral será interpretado por Stuart Townsend, a quien recordamos por su papel de Dorian Gray en la película League of Extraordinary Gentlemen,   asi como Hogun será  Tadanobu Asano (Zatoichi, 2003) y Volstagg correrá a cargo de Ray Stevenson ( Punisher War Zone, Cirque du Freak y la serie de televisión Rome.)

Spilling the news is the depicter of Thor’s first love Jane Foster, Natalie Portman, when expressing her excitement to work with Kat Dennings in the upcoming action fantasy movie.

Following several actors who have been previously confirmed to join “Thor”, Kat Dennings also has a part in the film. The news was first spilled by the film’s star Natalie Portman when she was interviewed by MTV Splash Page. “Well I’m really excited. Kat Dennings is going to be in it with me and she’s a good friend and an amazing actress, so I’m looking forward to that,” the depicter of Thor’s first love Jane Foster said.

Dennings’ inclusion in the cast ensemble for the film was later confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter. However, there has been no word on what character that will be played by the 23-year-old beauty as the site claimed Marvel Studio keeps a closed lid on her role.

Dennings is perhaps best known for her role as Norah Silverberg in “Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist”, which aided her to receive nomination as Breakthrough Performance Female at 2009 MTV Movie Awards. She previously also appeared in 2006 film “Big Momma’s House 2″ starring Martin Lawrence. She can next be seen in superhero film “Defendor”, which is slated for a 2009 release.

Prior to Kat Dennings, “Queen of the Damned” star Stuart Townsend, “King Arthur” star Ray Stevenson, and Japanese actor Tadanobu Asano have been tapped to be The Warriors Three, which is made up of Fandral, Hogun, and Volstagg. Joining the trio is “The Office” actor Idris Elba, who is set to portray Heimdell, the Guardian of Asgard in the upcoming adventure film.

Adapted from Marvel comics, “Thor” is an epic adventure that spans the Marvel Universe from present day Earth to the realm of Asgard. The story centers on Chris Hemsworth’s Thor, a powerful but arrogant warrior, who is cast down to Earth and forced to live among humans after his reckless actions reignite an ancient war. He later learns what it takes to be a true hero when the most dangerous villain of his world sends the darkest forces of Asgard to invade Earth. Paramount Pictures eyes a May 20, 2011 release date for the film.

…und ich bin nur bedingt zufrieden.

Chris Hemsworth kann ich mir schon mal schwer als Thor vorstellen. Er ist mir einfach viel zu jung und wirkt auch nicht so ernst wie Thor. Seh ich ähnlich kritisch wie den Typen der Gambit gespielt hat (und Gambit hat mir in Wolverine nicht gefallen) Aber immerhin wird er bei dem weiblichen Mainstream-Publikum punkten…

Tom Hiddleston als Loki find ich hingegen genial. Ich glaub der hat zwar bis jetzt nur TV-Rollen gehabt (zumindest hab ich ihn noch nie in einem Film gesehen) aber der hat schon dieses knöcherne und verschlagene Aussehen das ein Loki braucht.

Ja, ich glaube dass wir uns hier alle einig sein werden, dass Anthony Hopkins Verpflichtung als Odin den Film natürlich ungeheuer aufwertet und der Knüller schlechthin ist.

Natalie Portman als Jane Foster geht ebenfalls in Ordnung.

Na versoffen sieht Ray Stevenson schon aus, aber wird der Volstagg jetzt wirklich ausgestopft und 2/3 seines Gesichtes mit nem Bart verdeckt? Kann mir das gar nicht vorstellen.

Bei Stuart Townsend als Fandral habe ich halt wieder den Einwand dass er zu jung ist. Aber hier kann man wenigstens mit nem Bart noch was kaschieren…

NaJa, auch wenn mir Thor und seine Kumpels viel zu jung gecastet wurden, muss man sagen, dass es viel schlimmer hätte werden können.

Esta semana los actores Idris Elba (The Wire, The Losers, en la fotografía), Ray Stevenson (Roma, Punisher War Zone), Stuart Townsend (Battle in Seattle) y Tadanobu Asano (Mongol) han pasado a formar parte del elenco de Thor, adaptación del cómic Marvel que dirige Kenneth Branagh. El cineasta no puede tener queja de un elenco en cuya elección ha participado de forma determinante. Anteriormente ya se había anunciado que contaría con Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Natalie Portman, Anthony Hopkins, Jaimie Alexander, Colm Feore y Samuel L. Jackson en su proyecto. El rodaje de la superproducción comenzará a mediados de Enero, teniendo la mente puesta en el 20 de Mayo de 2.011, día en el que se ha marcado su estreno.

I was looking up Edward Cullen on Wikipedia and I saw that it said that Edward was a Byronic hero. Because of that, I clicked on the link that explained what a Byronic hero was. Anyway, as I was reading the characteristics, it did sounds like Edward As I continued down the website, it mentioned that Lestat from the Vampire Chronicles and the Phantom from the Phantom of the Opera were Byronic heros as well, but I digress with the Phantom. That made me think about how much Lestat and Edward were alike in the sense that they are both Byronic heros. I think that’s the reason why I don’t like either character. I mean, it’s not that I hate them, but it’s just that they’re not my favorites characters from their respective series. Anyway, I think that’s the reason why I don’t like Lestat and Edward is the fact that they’re Byronic heros.

In my search for any Lestat vs. Edward stuff, I found quite a few pictures that made fun of Edward and the Twilight series or making fun of the fact the Twilight series “outshines” the Vampire Chronicles. The one that I found to be the most funny was the one where it showed Edward and Bella together in the first box, and the following three boxes showing Louis, Lestat, and Armand telling their opinions on the series. I found that Lestat’s and Armand’s reactions to be the most funny. Their reactions were classic Lestat and Armand. Anyway, the next one that I thought was funny was the one where Lestat as picking on Edward. I just found those funny. By the way, you can find the originals at this site.

Idris Elba is cool. That’s all you need to know. He was the ex-SAS bloke in the UK show Ultraviolet that saw him taking down Vampires, or leeches as he called them. Stateside you will know him mainly from The Wire. Plus he got to snog Beyonce in Obsessed. He is currently working on The Losers which is an adaption of the excellent DC Comic about special forces types on the run.

It looks as if he is on a comic book roll as Heat Vision have the news he has been cast in Marvel Studio’s Thor movie – not as a human character, but as the Asgardian known as Heimdall.

In the comic Heimdall is the brother of the warrior Sif. He is the all-seeing and all-hearing guardian sentry of Asgard, he stands on the rainbow bridge, Bifrost and stands watch for any attacks to Asgard. For ages, he stood as the guardian of Asgard, defending the city’s gates from any intruders, and was one of the most trusted servants of Odin.

He has also had a few battles with Thor in the comics either stopping him entering or leaving Asgard so I could well imagine we’ll see something like that in the film.

The movie follows Thor (Chris Hemsworth) a Norse God banished to Earth for his arrogance and reckless behavior in the Asgard, the capital city of the Norse Gods. On Earth, he falls in love with a nurse named Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), but must become a true hero when his sinister brother Loki (Tom Hiddleston) brings the darkest forces of Asgard to wreak destruction on humanity. Directed by Kenneth Branagh (Hamlet), the film co-stars Anthony Hopkins, Stellan Skarsgård, Dominic Cooper, Jaimie Alexander, Colm Feore, Stuart Townsend, Ray Stevenson, and Tadanobu Asano.

It is shaping up to be an amazing cast.

I was bored recently and was on my computer I don’t know why but I typed Lestat vs. Edward into Google to see what I would get. Anyway, a lot of stuff that popped up were drawings of people making fun of Edward through Lestat’s point of view, and videos and articles asking who would win in a no-holds bar fight. I immediately thought that Lestat would definitely win. I say that because, after looking up their powers as a refresher, while Edward has super strength, super speed, and can read minds, Lestat can do or has all of that, plus so much more. Lestat also has pyrokinesis, the ability to fly, and he’s telekinetic. Plus, he killed an entire wolf pack by himself, albeit with the help of his two mastiff dogs. Anyway, I really think that Lestat would definitely win the fight against Edward, and that’s assuming Lestat doesn’t fall in love with Edward first, which I doubt would actually happen, and that Lestat doesn’t hurt Bella.

Thor กำหนดฉาย (สหรัฐ) 20 พฤษภาคม 2011 ครับ

A participação dos Três Guerreiros no filme do Thor está confirmada e o personagens já tem seus intérpretes no cinema, a informação foi divulgada no site da Variety. Os Três Guerreiros são fiéis companheiros do Deus do Trovão em suas aventuras.

Stuart Townsend (Aeon Flox) ficou com o papel de Fandral, o Galante, o ator Dominic Cooper também estava cotado para o papel. Towsend é mais conhecido por ser namorado da atriz Charlize Theron do que pelo seus trabalhos, pelo menos ele parece com o personagem.

Ray Stevenson que interpretou recentemente o Justiceiro no fraquissímo filme Punisher: War Zone, interpretará Volstagg, O Volumoso. O ator terá que engordar um pouco para o papel, mas nada que uma boa equipe  maquiagem não resolva
Já o ator Tadanobu Asano que está sendo muito elogiado pelo filme O Guerreiro Genghis Khan, será Hogun, O Severo. Com certeza o ator foi a melhor escolha do trio, além de parecer fisicamente com o personagem, Asano é um bom ator.

A história passará do reino de Asgard aos tempos atuais, conheceremos Thor, um poderoso e arrogante guerreiro cujas ações intempestivas despertam uma guerra antiga. Castigado pelos deuses Thor é enviado à Terra e forçado a viver entre os mortais. Aqui ele aprende o real significado de ser um verdadeiro herói, depois que o seu maior vilão envia as forças negras de Asgard para invadir a Terra.

O elenco da produção Thor segue crescendo. De acordo com o Collider, Stuart Townsend ( A Liga Extraordinária), Ray Stevenson (Punisher: Zona de Guerra) e Tadanobu Asano ( Mongol” estão se juntando ao elenco da mitologia nórdica da Marvel baseado em adaptação de quadrinhos. Os três formarão ‘Os três guerreiros’ um trio de amigos de Thor criado  para os quadrinhos na década de 60.

Townsend, que jogou o imortal Dorian Gray na Liga Extraordinária deve ser Fandral. Stevenson aparentemente será Volstagg e Asano, que já foi o jovem Genghis Khan em Mongol, fecha o trio como Hogun.

“Thor”, estrelado por Chris Hemsworth, como o deus nórdico, será dirigido por  Kenneth Branagh. As filmagens começam em janeiro deste ano. Anthony Hopkins, Natalie Portman, Jaimie Alexander, Stellan Skarsgard e Colm Feore também fazem parte do elenco.

Até o momento o que se sabe sobre o roteiro do filme é que  o deus nórdico do trovão será banido para viver na Terra entre os mortais e passará a protegê-los.

The ranks of Asgard are just about full! Marvel Studios reports that the Warriors Three will be joining Thor in all of his frosty battles, and as usual, Kenneth Branagh has done a bang up job with the casting. Stuart Townsend, Tadanobu Asano, and Ray Stevenson have joined the cast as Fandral, Hogun, and Volstagg, respectively.

The official announcement comes on the heels of Zachary Levi revealing to USA Weekend that he had been cast as Fandral, but was forced to drop out due to an extended Chuck workload. While I feel for Levi, I’m actually very pleased that Townsend has stepped in, as I find him to be a bit more Errol Flynnish than Levi. (Though pulling up his Google Images reveals a guy who looks a lot more dashing than Chuck Bartowski. Wow. I might have to eat my words on that.) I’m anxious to see the once-and-never Aragorn get another shot at the fantasy genre, and prove himself to be dashing.

I’m not familiar with Asano’s work beyond Mongol, but he turned in a very charismatic performance, and I’m always thrilled to see casting directors look to countries other than Northern Europe. But my heart really couldn’t beat any faster than it is at Stevenson’s casting. He’ll be perfect, and it’s awesome to see him get another shot at the Marvel Universe since it doesn’t look like we’ll ever see him return as Frank Castle. Filming begins in January 2010, and from there it’ll just be one big geeky countdown.

El Variety nos cuenta de que Marvel Studios y el director Kenneth Branagh han elegido a Stuart Townsend, Ray Stevenson, y Tadanobu Asano para que representen el trío de unos aventureros Asgardianos que pelearan al lado del dios Noruego llamados “Los tres guerreros”. El mismo Variety removió el artículo hace rato, llevandonos a creer que esta información estaba programada para que saliera en la semana.

Big news on Kenneth Branagh’s Thor is that the Warriors Three have been cast. None of them are Jude Law, Dominic West or Robert De Niro.

Instead the word on the street is that that Ray Stevenson (Punisher: War Zone, Rome), Stuart Townsend (League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Queen of the Damned) and Tadanobu Asano (Mongol) are to play the trio. Apparently, Stevenson will take on the role of “Volstagg the Valiant”, Asano will be “Hogun the Grim”, and Townsend will portray “Fandral the Dashing”.

Now this news has come from Variety, but every link I follow on other sites takes me to a dead page on Variety and looking at the list of movie news on their site I just can’t see it listed. It is probably just me being a bit blind today. I am assuming it was on their, but has since been removed. If that is the case then that could mean the news isn’t true or someone has messed up somewhere down the line.

I thought I would share the news anyway. It doesn’t quite ring true to me though as none of these actors have been linked to the film before now. Although Stevenson would be great (I am assuming Volstaag won’t be as big as he often is in the comic) and Asano already looks like Hogun, I feel the week link is Townsend. Just a personal thing, but he doesn’t cut it for me. He was naff as Dorian Gray in the naff LXG and he was down to play Aragorn in The Lord of the Rings but after a few days shooting he was replaced.

There you have it some news which may not actually be correct (hopefully Variety will sort it out), but it may be. Who knows!

UPDATE: Marvel is now confirming the casting – “Fandral will be played by Stuart Townsend. The job of Hogun goes to Tadanobu Asano. And Volstagg will be portrayed Ray Stevenson.”

Ben Barnes (Stardust (2007), The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian(2008)) interpretará Dorian, o jovem de beleza estonteante que após ter noção desta através de um quadro pintado por seu amigo Basil e pelas palavras instigadoras de Lord Henry, se perde apaixonadamente pela própria beleza e deseja do fundo de seu coração mantê-la para sempre. The Picture of Dorian Gray carrega uma grande carga biográfica devido a crítica social que Oscar Wilde faz a sociedade do século XIX. Pessoas que escondem suas perversões, traições amorosas e uso de pessoas para chegar a objetivos egoístas atrás das máscaras sociais são claramente identificadas na obra, tornando-a universal e atemporal. Por isso as várias versões cinematográficas da obra, desde versões em cinema mudo até a utilização de Dorian em A Liga Extraordinária como o Ser sem sentimentos.

Lembrando que Oscar Wilde sentiu na pela toda a hipocrisia de uma sociedade quando todos lhe viraram as costas, perdendo todo o dinheiro e quase a dignidade completa sendo preso e humilhado quando acusado de ter um relacionamento homossexual com Lord Alfred Douglas, ou Bosie.

Vampires are mesmerizing beings. They’re labeled the undead, since technically they are neither dead nor alive. They mostly have a great sense of style and just are hot. Of course there is the whole ick factor of blood-sucking and all, but overall, they bring charisma, charm, lust and seduction to the screen. Many actors have taken on roles as vampires either in TV shows or movies, but right now this is a movies blog so we are going to go strictly film on this one. Now of course it is impossible to cover them all, so I am going to mention some of the most remarkable ones and if you disagree or think I’ve left some important ones out, well- please share

The first Vampire I met on screen was Anne Rice’s Lestat, portrayed by the skilled Tom Cruise:

Now, the trouble with Tom Cruise’s portrayal of Lestat- probably it has to do with the script, I haven’t read the novel, so I wouldn’t know how Anne Rice meant him to be- he brings humor to the story. Lestat isn’t scary. Oh sure, Brad Pitt’s Louis was rightfully scared when Lestat was sucking the life out of him, but Tom Cruise with blond hair and terribly white skin does not equal something of a cold, Scandinavian or in our case a vampiric beauty. Tom is good with jet black, short or a little longish hair like he has in Mission Impossible 2 or Jerry Maguire. Well, I hadn’t initially found Tom’s look funny, I just thought he wasn’t exactly scary or desirable. But here’s what happens: He picks Brad Pitt as his life partner. I have no objections as in picking a guy like Brad to spend eternity with, let’s face Lestat could do a lot worse. But, need I remind you Lestat is a male undead? Sure, a vampire is a sexual being and he could be as gay or as bi as he damn pleases. But a male vampire (Tom Cruise) siring another guy (Brad Pitt) is not exactly a girl’s fantasy. Well, it is not mine anyway. You haven’t picked up on the vibe? Watch closely. Lestat addsa little girl played by Kirsten Dunst to the group  and she keeps acting like a total brat. So Lestat gets pissed and threatens her with bringing home a sister. Dad Tom, Mommy Brad – and kid Dunst. One small, weird vampire family. Well, it didn’t hurt that the movie also features Antonio Banderas as a Vampire with beautiful long hair. But mind you, Banderas’ Armand is not nearly as destructively gorgeous as his El Mariachi in Desperado. There’s something wrong with the vampires in this movie. They are pretty. But they are not sexy.

Now Dracula is the ultimate myth, legend, fantasy. Dracula is the most famous Vampire of all times. Many versions have been written since Bram Stoker’s and many actors have played him. And this one with Gary Oldman is sort of fun. The cast is great. It has Winona Ryder as Dracula’s love/lust interest, Keanu Reeves as her fiancé and Anthony Hopkins as Van Helsing. The problem is Dracula seems much too much like a cartoon character. The movie was directed by Francis Ford Coppola ,however it more feels like a Tim Burton movie. And I think I would have liked it more  if it had been a Tim Burton movie and with Johnny Depp as the Dracula. Gary Oldman is a fantastic actor but this movie is listed as a horror romance whereas the way it has been shot and acted out as a parody. Or maybe it just feels that way because it was short in 1992 and the effects aren’t that good. There is also a very superficial on my part that Dracula is very ugly for the most of the time. Now, this Dracula is fun. It is not scary or that much exciting, but it is fun. After all, we have young women being trapped,seduced, fed on by Dracula. And Dracula is Gerard Butler. Now, we shouldn’t have any lack of masculinity or charisma issues, right? But there’s something off about this particular vampire. He is supposed to be the perfect seducer. And fine, sure he looks a lot better than most of the people you would meet in a bar- but I am not sure I would have recognized Gerard Butler, had I not known he was in it. This clean- shaven face makes him look too young- and he is kinda young himself- and too innocent. However I was checking out stuff with Dracula 2000 and I came upon his audition, where he looks utterly different. He has long hair, a beard and he looks like he could be the perfect Pirate of the Carribean- minus Jack Sparrow’s a little eccentric behavior. I am posting the link, but I will put an image just to give you the picture. Gerard Butler appears in this video very similar to his image in Attila. And below is how he was in Attila.

4) QUEEN OF THE DAMNED

I think Stuart Townsend makes the perfect Lestat. Of course I’m biased, not because I’m a great fan of Stuart – I became fan after this movie, but because this movie captures the goth and rock spirit that comes with the vampire territory. Here when Lestat wakes up, he also sort of takes a hard rock band under his wing and becomes their singer. The whole world falls in love with this vampire and his music. Rockstars have tons of groupies and many front men are considered as sex symbols. They have added the dark side and the allure of the vampiric quality and bingo! You have a vampire movie with a really cool soundtrack and a vampire that can really seduce. It is not highly rated but I believe this movie to be very underrated. If you like Vampires and hard rock, you will enjoy this movie.

When I like an actor/actress I always tend to do a little research, especially if the actor is male and he is good looking. It’s rare that I do this, because I don’t have many celebrity crushes and I never obsess. Obsessing over a celebrity is creepy, people. Remember that.

• When I was a pre-teen, I was all about Jonathan Taylor Thomas. He was plastered all over my walls for a good year or so because I figured that’s what us girls were supposed to do. I got bored of him after about a month because of that. This is him now, apparently – not bad:

• The next one came years later when I was about 16 years old after watching “Queen of the Damned” and “All About Adam” or something. Now, anything with Stuart Townsend in it drives me absolutely crazy. He is, by far, the best looking man on the planet (my boyfriend thinks this way about Uma Thurman) and he will forever be my number one celebrity crush:

•  And then there’s the last two whom I don’t really have a crush on – but I do find them extremely interesting and well, I think they’re good looking – obviously. Robert Pattinson and Peter Facinelli (both introduced to me via the movie Twilight):

The only thing that drives me absolutely insane about Robert Pattinson is his hair. It’s unpredictable, complete and utter insanity atop his head. Otherwise he seems like an interesting human being. I think my whole interest in him is the fact that he can play the piano so well. Peter is just gorgeous and needs to be stared at 24/7.

Imi aduc aminte ca l-am vazut in anul I de facultate. E unul dn putinele filme pe care le-am vazut a 2-a oara, si a 3-a, si pe care l-as revedea cu placere si acum, nu doar pentru ca imi place genul. Cautand trailer-ul mi-am amintit cat de mult mi-a placut soundtrack-ul si faptul ca am ascultat piesele ani la rand.
Daca nu l-ati vazut pana acum vi-l recomand si… poate mi-l trimiteti si mie fiindca eu nu l-am mai gasit.

Kanske inte en person många känner till… Han är en amerikansk skådespelare som har varit med i The Prophecy, Rob Roy, Butterfly effect och The Fly 2 etc.
Tycker han är himla söt och väldigt enkel till utseendet. Tycker om hans drag ^^

07. Christian Bale
Haha, min första kärlek… Jag var så förälskad i hans karaktär; Jum-Jum i Mio min Mio när jag var väldigt liten.
Idag är han allas hjälte, vår kära Batman. Han är fortfarande vacker!

06. Rob Pattinson
Det finns väl inte någon som inte vet vem denna fyr är?!? Skådespelaren som slog igenom stort i vampyrrullen “Twilight”; där han spelar Edward Cullen. Han är väldigt attraktiv och har väldigt speciella drag i ansiktet. Han har ett ansikte man väldigt gärna vill fotografera; bra uttryck och attityd – passar bra till både modernt och gammaldags/klassiskt mode. Den eviga “Edward Cullen hysterin” får honom att tappa lite poäng – han känns inte lika spännande.

05. Viggo Mortensen
Oh, yes, Danmark ska känna sig stolt här! För er som inte vet så är denna man en utmärkt skådespelare; har b la spelat rollen som Aragorn i LOTR. Hans ansiktsdrag är helt fantastiska och så är han fotograf, konstnär och poet vid sidan av – min typ av man

04. Alexander Rybak
Spellemannen och eviga tjejtjusaren från Norge, ursprungligen från Vitryssland – en kär liten gutt med andra ord. Han vann överlägset i Eurovision Song Contest nu i år med sin låt “Fairytale”. Mycket fin benstruktur i ansiktet (speciellt käkpartiet och öronen). Har ett väldigt glatt och kärt utseende.Han är en väldigt god violinist

03. Stuart Townsend (Het!)
En mycket, mycket vacker skådespelare; som b la har spelat rollen som Lestat i Queen of the damned. Vackert och avslappnat ansikte och underbar röst!

02. Bill Kaulitz (Hetare!!)
Här har vi killen som klättrar hur som helst på min lista, ibland nära botten och nu nära toppen. Sångaren i det tyska bandet, Tokio Hotel. Äntligen, ÄNTLIGEN har han skaffat en häftig frisyr som passar hans extrema stil. Bill Kaulitz är den enda killen som passar med den mängden smink som han har. Dock vill jag se han bli lite äldre innan mina klor vässas
Otroligt vackert ansikte, djupa ögon, söta öron (hm…börjar misstänka en öronfetisch här) Gillar hans lilla oskyldighet; om det är för att han är oskuld eller ej, det vet inte jag men vacker är han iallafall

01. Jeff Goldblum (Hetast!!!)
Nu har tiden kommit för alla att skjuta skallen av mig ;D Jag tycker Jeff Goldblum är den hetaste mannen på jorden och jag vet att jag är ganska ensam om att tycka så i min ålder. Han är 34 år äldre än mig men hade han velat hade jag lätt dejtat honom ;D Han är allt en man ska vara; rolig, sexig, exotisk, sarkastisk och lång. Han har den rätta charmen, mörka härliga ögon och underbara öron, enorma! Jag älskar en man som fortfarande har kvar barnet inom sig och som samtidigt är väldigt sofistikerad och intelligent. Hans intelligenssnack får mig att smälta! För er som inte vet så är han en skådespelare som b la har medverkat i Flugan, Jurassic Park och Independence day. Han brukar få intelligenta men roliga vetenskapsroller.

As 1999 drew to a close and the focus of most people was on the approach of the Millennium, the World Trade Organization, a group born out of the Marrakesh Agreement of 1995 whose purpose is to facilitate trade between nations, prepared to hold a conference in Seattle. Although the group was ostensibly for the purpose of making trade easier, it had become a means for wealthy, industrial nations to impose their will on poorer, emerging nations. Their policies had begun to attract international attention and controversy, and their conference would become a watershed event – for all the wrong reasons.

Jay (Henderson) is an activist much respected among his peers for his responsible leadership and his ability to organize massive, peaceful protests. His brother died during a protest of timber logging, and that event has guided Jay’s every move as an activist. Django (Benjamin) is, like Jay a respected activist and organizer, but whereas Jay is intense and serious, Django is much easy-going and genial. Lou (Rodriguez) is a protester who is bitter and frustrated, her perception being that peaceful protests don’t work against the morally bankrupt. She argues that more drastic measures would be needed to get the attention of those who only respond to power and force. Sam (Jennifer Carpenter) has a nursing background and while she agrees with Jay’s tactics and politics, doesn’t have the will to stand up and be counted.

They, along with thousands of others, have descended upon Seattle to protest the WTO talks there and if possible, bring those discussions to a standstill. They hold the WTO responsible for hunger, poverty and death in the Third World due to their unbalanced policies geared at insuring the rich get richer.

Seattle mayor Jim Tobin (Liotta) is concerned about the protests. He is proud that Seattle landed the conference of a prestigious international organization, and yet he walks a fine line with the protesters; he speaks to the WTO delegates praising the organization and welcoming them to his city, and then later the same day speaks to the protesters, slamming the WTO and asking the protesters to be peaceful in their demonstrations.

Dale (Harrelson) is a Seattle cop who is sympathetic to the protesters, but ready to maintain order. His wife Ella (Theron) is pregnant and works at a fashionable boutique in downtown Seattle. He lets her know about the protests scheduled there for the day and worries that traffic might be snarled. She brushes away his concerns.

Jean (Nielsen) is a television reporter covering the protests for her station. She is essentially apolitical, and is more concerned with getting the story than with taking sides. She’s ambitious and looking to make a name for herself.

At first, the protests are peaceful and effective, shutting down traffic around the conference venue and forcing talks to halt.  However, a small group of anarchists escalate matters, damaging the property of shops carrying goods that bring profits to those they feel are benefitting from the WTO’s immoral policies. The media picks up on this subset of the protest and worried officials from Washington state (as well as Washington DC) bring enormous pressure onto Mayor Tobin to give the go-ahead for police to use more aggressive tactics in dispersing protesters, as well as call in the National Guard to assist.

Mayor Tobin is reluctant at first, worrying that this will only further inflame matters but eventually capitulates. True to his worst nightmare, the protests descend into riots, with police brutalizing the protesters and firing tear gas into crowds of people. Ella, caught in the crossfire, is cruelly beaten by Dale’s fellow officers. Dale is heartbroken and angry at this, begging his commanding officer to be excused from duty but the riots have become too widespread – all hands are needed. This turns out to be a very bad idea.

This is a fictionalized account of actual events. First-time director Townsend (an actor best known for his role as Lestat in Queen of the Damned) integrates actual footage of the riots into his recreation of the chaos which lends an air of authenticity that is the movie’s strongest feature. Unfortunately, some of the subplots – particularly the romance between Jay and Lou – serve to muddle things up and eventually come off as unnecessary and unwanted.

It’s an impressive cast assembled here, with Harrelson deserving particular kudos as the cop conflicted by his political beliefs, and his outrage and anger at what happens to his wife. Liotta, who’s become a first-class character actor, is splendid as the bureaucratic mayor who watches helplessly as events spiral out of control.

Most of the rest of the cast has to suffer through cliché-ridden roles, with Henderson as the passionate and beloved activist, haunted by demons and Rodriguez as a poor little rich girl with daddy issues. Theron (Townsend’s wife in real life) has little to do other than look alarmed and scream loudly when she is attacked.

However, the shortcomings of the script don’t overcome the power of the story. The Seattle riots are widely considered a watershed event of American activism of recent years and managed to focus attention, albeit briefly, on the abuses within the WTO. The filmmakers have a definite agenda but the fault with the escalating violence is not placed in one camp or the other. Fingers can certainly be pointed in both directions. It should also be noted that the filmmakers depiction of anarchists causing property damage and in essence instigating the police response has been denied vehemently by anarchist groups that actually participated in the protests that day.

The important thing for our purposes is whether the movie is entertaining and/or informative. The former is certainly true and the latter is true as well. So the movie is at least successful on those fronts. I think that there is still a more compelling movie to be made on this subject, perhaps a dramatized version of the real people and events of the protests. Until it is, this one will do.

WHY RENT THIS: Well-staged dramatizations of the protests, mixed in with archival footage make those scenes some of the most compelling of the film. Ray Liotta and Woody Harrelson in particular deliver solid performances.

WHY RENT SOMETHING ELSE: The extraneous romantic subplot grinds the movie to a halt and many of the characters are little more than clichés.

FAMILY VALUES: The language is pretty coarse throughout and there are some disturbing images during the protest scenes.

TRIVIAL PURSUIT: In one of the shots of the riots, Quest Field appears in the background. At the time of the actual riots, Quest Field hadn’t been built yet. Instead, the Kingdome stood on that site.

NOTABLE DVD EXTRAS: A featurette on the background of the WTO.

FINAL RATING: 7/10

TOMORROW: Surrogates
