Carina’s session was so much fun. We started in the morning, trying to avoid some heat, at a wildflower field located not far from the studio. Many of my existing clients may know this field from the golden panoramic canvas I have hanging in the studio of Heather & Travis, but it looks very different this time of year with lush greens and purples some very tall ‘cat tail’ type weeds.

Carina was fearless and hopped right in the weeds so we could create some beautiful portraits. And all the ‘senior portrait gods’ came together that morning and we kept joking how she could not have been having a more perfect hair day and the wind always seemed to be blowing it in just the right direction for the images. It was a great session and with a variety of images at the wildflower field and around some of the more urban grunge areas close to downtown Decatur we got a wide variety of images for her, even including a couple with mom (those are always a blast).

This… I repeat… THIS Will be the post that will make most of you mad at me. And guess what… I don’t care!!! Wanna know why? Because it is my job to tell you the truth. This will make the ladies angry for obvious reasons, and this will make some of the fellas angry because I’ll kinda sorta be giving a piece of “the game” away. But Oh Well! I’m tired of the foolery that I see going on around me. Most of it is childish and (with no disrespect to my non black supporters) this is the kind of stuff that is woven into the fabric of the Black Community and it’s not helping our declining family structure. If you don’t like the truth then this DEFINITELY is not the post you should read.  Ready? Let’s go…

#Scenario #1- If you had the opportunity to get a job… with a regular pay check… and a benefits package… and a company car… and a vacation every 6 months and you did NOT have to report to work everyday, or go to the meetings, would you take the job?!? Most of you would look at the opportunity a little funny at first because it would appear to good to be true but we’d all probably end up taking it or at least trying it out for a little while.

#Scenario #2- If you had the chance to have the perfect body for the rest of your life, with no work… no exercise… no dieting… no tanning… no grooming… Would you take it? OF COURSE YOU WOULD!

With that being said, If there is little to no requirement for us to commit to the work load, or commit to the time & energy part of it, BUT we still get to reap the benefits of a situation and take part in the Benefits Package, we’re going to do it!!! Let’s take it a step further… If I am a human being who enjoys company… good times… good food… sex… laughs… having things bought for me… etc… And I can get those things from a person without having to commit to them in a relationship, Most Human Beings are going to do it. Not all… But Most! SO! When you call my phone or send your e-mails to #KelzKitchen and ask things like, “Why won’t He/She commit?” or “I don’t know where it’s going, I mean they act like they’re my mate but they still want their freedom,” please don’t expect the angels to fall from the sky, and for Questlove and the Roots to start playing a Heavenly anthem, and for Bells & Whistles to sound off in the background of some miraculous answer. Your answer is VERY SIMPLE. When are they going to commit? Either A- When they feel like it or B- NEVER. You gave them the Benefits Package without requiring that they commit to the company. We’re supposed to be dating each other like -> THIS <- anyway! LoL! I think I’mma stop here for today. Y’all be good…

And so it began, open bar, passed hors d’oeuvres, life was good at NYC’s Surf Bar located in Hell’s Kitchen. What was unique about this party for me was that a cocktail waitress, who we’ll refer to for now as “Coat Check Girl”, was working there and unlike everyone else, I didn’t wait on line for my food or drinks. Well, one thing led to another and before I knew it I was entered into the limbo contest. All night long I’ve been drinking vodka on the rocks and here I am about to participate in a contest that requires one thing, coordination. After a few rounds, we started to weed out the weak players until I was competing in the top three. After some deep concentration, I managed to pull it off and I was crowned the 2011 Kontera limbo king.

Just a few weeks later, I was participating with Best Buddies NYC at their 2nd Annual Best Buddies Walk in Washington Square Park. Now for those of you who don’t know, Best Buddies is a non-profit charity that creates opportunity for friendship, employment and leadership development for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The walk started at 10:00am Sunday morning, but instead of going home and calling it an early Saturday night, I decided to go to Studio XXI followed by drinks at 1 Oak with LeBron (Yes, that LeBron). I didn’t get too crazy, I mean, being a baller on a budget has it’s limits too. Anyways, on about two hours sleep, I met with my team for the Best Buddies Walk, which we had raised over $1,000 for in just under 5 days. Over 500 people had shown up and together we raised over $55,000 for a great cause.

The walk ended at a nearby NYU gymnasium, which had stations setup inside for everyone to come socialize and win prizes. Included in prizes were 4 tickets to a Mets game. Now I’m not a Mets fan, but my friend Peter (a.k.a. The Polish Tower) is a huge Mets fan. Unfortunately, Peter was at a slight disadvantage for this contest because he is 6′ 4″. So me being the good friend that I am, decided to compete for him. But what did I need to compete in you ask? Yup, you guessed it, another limbo contest. However, this limbo contest did not have an open bar before hand, nor was it exclusive to adults. In fact, 90% of the contestants were children who were under 4′ 6″, but that didn’t matter. What mattered to me was that everyone was truly enjoying themselves.

Now I’m sure you’re all sitting on the edge of your seats dying to know so let me break it to you. I did not bring home the gold this time around. I made it to the top 5, but caved under the pressure. After all was said and done, there is only one question to ask yourselves: How low can you go?

If you’re familiar with Love/Hate in Miami, then you will love/love this lounge because it’s definitely upgrade. It’s located in the west side in Chelsea. Good DJ with a mix of hip hop to old school R&B. I could have been imagining the Old School R&B with enough vodka tonics, but everyone was dancing rather than lounging. The decor was perfect with pieces from the local street artist ALEC. You might recognize his pieces depicting Rich Uncle Pennybag’s DJ-ing. [He deserves a "reason" article on his own] Definitely put this on your Friday to-do-list next time around.

Before you decide to put artwork on your body, think about exactly what it is that you want. Have someone draw it up or do it yourself, don’t rely on the artwork in the shops. Do not drink or go in hungover. You will bleed terribly, and it will be a lot more painful. I learned that lesson the hard way. Think about where you want it. The most painful areas are your ribs and feet. Basically any area that is mostly bone is going to hurt worse than a softer area. Ladies if you choose your stomach, be prepared that it will stretch if you have kids.

If you are going to get a quote or name, double-check the spelling. If you are going to do it in a different language, ask someone that speaks it to double-check it. You wouldn’t want to end up with something offensive or different from what you thought. Really think hard if you want someone’s name like your boyfriend/girlfriend. You don’t want “Bob” and end up dating a “Bill.” After care is extremely important so buy non scented lotion. The best one is Lubriderm. Some shops offer a special ointment, which works well too. Stay out of the sun for a while and don’t pick at it! It will scab over and itch, but picking at it can damage your new art. Shop around and stick to a simpler tattoo for your first time. You need to determine your pain tolerance before deciding on a whole sleeve. You can always add to it another time.

As for where to go, if you don’t live in Las Vegas, ask around. If you see some nice work, people have no problem sharing who did it. If you are in Las Vegas, I have personally gotten some of my work done at Bad Apple Tattoo. They do an awesome job. My last one I got done was at Studio 21, which turned out great and the one in my profile picture, but a little higher priced than what I have paid before. I have friends that have gotten inked at Living Dead Tattoo, Pussykat Tattoo Parlor and Precious Sluts, and all were very satisfied.

The X107.5 FM Las Vegas Ink’d Expo is Friday, April 22 through Sunday, April 24 at the Las Vegas Hilton Convention Center. It is a great opportunity to talk to local tattoo artists and get an idea on what you are looking for. It also allows you to bid out prices. It is open to the public for $10 per day or a 3 day pass is $25. Tattoo artists from all over the world will be there and you can get inked at the event. They will have piercing available and same rules apply when getting pierced. Diablo’s Cantina will be hosting the official after-party with drink specials and live music all three nights.

Wherever you decide, just think long and hard if you want to do it for sure. It wouldn’t be a good idea to stop in the middle of it because you can’t take the pain or chicken out. Forever is a long time so make sure it means something to you even when you’re an elder.

I secretly go to ‘rival’ Studio 21, next to Tottenham Court Road station, on Saturday nights. It was a large subterranean club with a sprung dance floor and a mixed crowd. Run by Jock McDonald and DJ Dave Archer, who attracted a sort of ‘clan’ comprising Richard Jobson and Russell Webb from the Skids, John Keeble from Spandau Ballet, John Lydon from Public Image Ltd, Mark Tiplady from Then Jericho and Barry O’Dea, a man from Balham. At one after-party my friend Wendy and I found ourselves sitting cross–legged on the floor of a high-rise apartment with Lydon, aka Johnny Rotten, quoting us the lines: “Little girls with painted faces should be seen and not heard” from X-Ray Spex’s “Oh Bondage, Up Yours!”


The Blitz exerted a powerful influence on many of us, particularly because we were so assuredly young at the time. In hindsight, it might have helped my future to have gone to school more often. I remember when Wendy and I scuppered our sixth form chances at 6am in St James’s Park by bunking our exams later that day after a particularly good night out. Yet, I cannot deny that those incredible nights in London during 1979-81 continue to inform my life in so many ways.

clutch sky every time a cab comes into a view. Up by Tottenham Court Road tube station something different is coming to life
Studio 21 : the discreet nature of the sign conjures visions of some pornographic den, beneath flights of stairs. But the music
emerging from the speaker positioned above the entrance is The Human League´s ´The Path Of Least Resistance´.
Every pleasure has its price. For this you part company with 2.45 pounds, sign your name, which automatically registers you as a
member, collect your meal ticket ( this entitles you to a plate of about a dozen chips, a beefburger and a dollop of relish) and
descend the stairs to the basement 4 Be 2´ ´One Of The Lads´.
This is the Saturday night residence of God´ nocturnal pretty-ugly things. Gathered in groups under red lighting, observing and
waiting to be observed. Doesn’t matter if you´re male or female, here you can be what you want and nobody gives a toss. the
wilder the better : these barnets are constructed with the same architectural precision as nearby Centrepoint.
Joy Division´s ´She´s Lost Control´. A drink in the bar area – larger 80p a pint, spirits 70p a tot – not as extortionate as you might
expect – then into the disco chamber. Barely sweating bodies twitch the night away to anything that sounds credibly posey . Telex
to T. Rex, Roxy Music to Manicured Noise. The D.J. spot rotates between Dave Archer who tries hard to be noticed and fails, and
Jock McDonald, who tries hard and succeeds.
The air is strong with the stench or stale hair spray and deodorant. The dancers hold hands and slide to and fro careful not to
dishevel a hair on their heads. The atmosphere is friendly, even if there is a certain rivalry between the ´odd couples´
For every Clark Gable there´s two David Bowies. Magazine´s ´Back To Nature´.
At 2.30 the music slows down. Cabs queue outside for the homeward bound. The clientele of Studio 21 appreciate more than
most the dangers of walking home

It was a beautiful evening with local author Beth Kephart Tuesday night…we listened to Beth read from her enchanting new book, Dangerous Neighbors. I would like to thank  all of the wonderful beth-book-huggers, friends and relatives, writers and students, colleagues and mentors, young adults and parents, who braved the not-so-great weather conditions to join us in the Winsor Room to honor the author. My evening was extra special because my colleague and Young Adult Librarian, Molly Carroll, partnered with me for the planning and hosting of this special event. Jim Heck was there from Studio 21 to record Beth’s talk, and Bill Sulit, technical  advisor, was there working overtime (according to his wife, Beth Kephart). I am so pleased that Hannah Schwartz, owner of Children’s Book World of Haverford, was there to handle the book sales for the Library.

It put a smile on my face and brought a tear to my eye when I saw Melissa Middleman Ferman…a Cabrini College graduate, who came all the way from Delaware (below the canal) to hear Beth’s talk. In the rain. Melissa and I worked together at Huntingdon Valley Library in the ’80′s…she was a page, and still a high school student back then. I wasn’t a Librarian in those days…but I am sure one of the reasons I am a Librarian today is because of my experience working with a lovely young lady named Melissa. She is now married, a mother of twins and it turns out Melissa is a blogging friend of Beth’s, too. We are all living in this very small world –even smaller now, with the Interweb

It was pretty good.

I’ve started working out again for the first time in a long time. I’m pretty sure I destroyed my left arm completely and my right arm is spasming I write this, making it difficult to focus (let alone hit the keys). This kick probably won’t go anywhere, but it does make me feel better about myself when I choose to eat at my two favorite places, Jack in the Box and Chilis. I’m such an American. Oh well.

I’ve been cooking a lot more too, which has been fun. Tonight I made delicious chicken, and earlier I made a steak. When I actually have the time, it’s worth it. Unfortunately, just as last time, when the semester gets going I will become tired and worn down, and all I want to do is eat some nasty fast food crap and go to bed after a couple of beers.

Speaking of beers, I’ve decided to hold off on them. I’m not fat per se, but it’s obvious I’ve been starting a beer belly. I don’t want to end up like some of the people I know that have the one that rolls over the belt. Not my thing. So hurray, I’ve stopped drinking! Well, actually not. I’m just going to switch to vodka and mix it with cranberry and V8. From the amount of beer I drink vs the amount of vodka I would drink, I might even save money. Still, it will feel weird if I don’t drink beer while watching the Cowboys.

And now that I mention the Cowboys, over the new years break I was able to go see the Cowboys shut out the Eagles. It was amazing, if only because of the stadium. It’s impossible to describe, but must be one of the new wonders of the world. Really incredible. And, this COULD be the year for the Cowboys to go to the superbowl. I’m saying this now but there’s still two very tough games ahead. But I support my ‘boys.

I think that’s about it. I’m not sure what else I’ll be doing this semester, but I know I’ll be on the radio hosting and if I can, I’ll go back to the TV station. We’ll have to see!

Following  “The Other Pakistan” exhibit and lecture at the Library (June 2009) Elisabeth organized an expanded touring exhibit of “The Other Pakistan” in the United States with stops so far, at the 37th Conference of South Asian Studies at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, WI; John Hopkins University in Washington, D.C.; the University of Chicago and the Woodrow Wilson School of Princeton University (December 2009). Elisabeth also traveled to South Africa this July to help launch a sister exhibition in Cape Town and to meet there with some of the Pakistani photographers who helped create this stunning exhibition. In October, Elisabeth exhibited 6 of her Pakistan and Syria photographs at Twelve Gates Art Gallery in Philadelphia, and I went to the opening. An intimate gallery on Cherry Street, Twelve Gates specializes in South Asian Art. It was the perfect venue for Elizabeth’s exotic images.

For this exhibition, Elisabeth used a rare technique, printing photographic images on wasli paper prepared for inkjet printing. Traditionally used in Islamic miniature painting during the 16th century,  wasli paper consists of several sheets of watercolor paper that have been glued together, and the top sheet of which has been finely polished.

For her images, Elisabeth uses only the top sheet of wasli paper. Digital photography projected onto polished wasli that has been prepared for inkjet printing creates a diffused atmospheric effect that deliberately de-emphasizes precise photographic contours. To the best of Elisabeth’s knowledge, no one has ever printed digital images on wasli.

In June of 2010, the photographer will return to us with Syria images (“The Other Syria”?). The photographs will be in the Library the entire month. Then in late June we’ll host a talk in the Winsor Room. If you happen to be in town hanging out at Rich Mattis’ Gryphon Cafe on the night of the program, sneak on over for an hour and hear Elizabeth’s talk. You know, you just might see Rich at the Library. Yeah…uh uh, Rich hangs out here.

(Note to self: Ask George Strimel (Studio 21) if he is planning on recording this program like he did Pakistan last summer)

Utrecht-  Miss Utrecht, Deniz Akkoyun, is de nieuwe Miss Nederland 2008.

De 24-jarige Akkoyun is geboren en getogen in Amersfoort. De ouders van Akkoyun zijn geboren in Alanya in Turkije.

Miss Overijssel Maaike Heethaar (24) uit Raalte werd tweede. Miss Noord-Holland Desiree van den Berg (21) uit Santpoort eindigde als derde.

Miss Nederland vertegenwoordigt ons land in het voorjaar van 2009 bij Miss Europe in Frankrijk. De nieuwe Miss Nederland kreeg zondagavond de tiara uitgereikt van haar voorganger Melissa Sneekes. De twaalf provinciemissen streden in Studio 21 in Hilversum om de eretitel.

De badpakkenronde ontbrak zondag. In plaats daarvan liepen de dames in skipakken over de catwalk, waaronder ze een bikinitopje toonden. In de eerste ronde liepen de twaalf provinciemissen in jurken van de in augustus overleden modeontwerper Percy Irausquin. In de derde ronde liepen de dames in creaties van de beroemde Turkse modeontwerper Erol Albayrak die eveneens in de dertienkoppige jury zat.

Akkoyun stond perplex toen ze de tiara, een ontwerp van Rodrigo Otazu, op haar hoofd kreeg. Ze reageerde emotioneel. “Het is echt geweldig, ik heb hem echt op mijn hoofd”, aldusde nieuwe Miss Nederland.

Eerder op de avond antwoordde ze op de vraag van de jury waarom er zo weinig Nederlandse vrouwen in de top van het bedrijfsleven zitten: “Er moeten meer vrouwen aan de top komen. Vroeger hadden vrouwen minder mogelijkheden. De huidige generatie vrouwen heeft die mogelijkheden wel, dat moeten we benutten.”

Akkoyun is bijna klaar met haar master strafrecht en tegelijkertijd is ze begonnen aan de master informatierecht in Amsterdam. “Naast mijn studie heb ik vele hobbies waaronder uitgaan, winkelen en reizen”, aldus de kersverse miss.

Me on TV (in 2010, but you get the idea)

Okay, so, I’m back in school. Having some fun, I guess. It’s nice to be back at Trinity and everything, come to think of it. Laying around bored all day sounds like fun when you’re busy, but in practice it’s a pretty huge waste of time. That said, most of my classes this year I don’t actually want to take, but I should be done wasting my time (except for a lab class) by next school year. I suppose this semester should be easier than the last one, but who knows? We’ll just have to see how it goes…

Otherwise I should be doing my rap segment on TV this coming Monday. Let’s hope I don’t freeze!
