far from a love-love relationship, stumbling makes me happy, sad, angry, and a procrastinator. there are days that SU insists i be political and only takes me to sites that talk about the environment or cancer or some shit. other days, there is nothing but idiotic college pranks videos. but mostly, SU is my friend. it helps me take my mind off things. i have discovered many wonderful sites and resources thanks to SU, like cracked.com, and badassoftheweek.com. both are similar in their humor: fratboy like, just like me. in the sea of zefrank, memeparty (NSFW), dickipedia, countless art, queer and feminist blogs, and awesome lists of awesome online free books that i will never read, i spend my days discovering the internet and adding massive amounts of useless pop culture information to my brain. that and perez hilton.

teh internets are a place of 5% useful information, 10% funny cats, and 85% porn. speaking of porn, for all you non-connoisseurs of the internets, rule 34 states that if it exists, there is porn about it. if you don’t believe me, type ANYTHING followed by the word porn or sex into google (filter off, of course), and you’ll be disgustingly surprised. also, the internet is a very racist and chauvinistic place. i cannot tell you the number of times i have stumbled upon a motivational-poster-themed picture of very young girls and some reference to jail bait. it’s disgusting and hot at the same time, which makes me hate myself a bit. but that’s kind of the raison d’etre of porn. make you horny and self-hateful.

I’ve just finished my fifty-eighth (or something like that) book of the year and now I am sans reading material and have not a clue as to what to look for next. Luckily for me, I stumbled upon (quite literally) The Book Seer, a new book suggesting app for the web from Apt Studio. Simply enter in the last book you read and it’ll suggest some stuff for you to read next.

The developers are still working on how to add more content as some of the more recent, hyped books (a la Twilight), the Seer will suggest nothing. But for other, lesser media-crazy books, the suggested reading list can number into the high double-digits. Not a bad thing for us bookworms!

Something new I hope to continue each week. Lots of bloggers do this, I’ve noticed. A weekly “what I love” or “interesting things around the ‘net” so I want to try it.

How would you describe your family dynamics?  Critical, achievement-oriented, efficient?  Warm, secure, caring, stimulating?

Which would you prefer?  Which would you strive towards?

The latter, most likely.  We all thrive in warm and caring environment — children, especially.

So, how do we get there?

• Meet Needs—Give attention, security, a sense of belonging, touch, affection, and stimulation.
• Know Your Child—Play!  Be a good listener.  Spend deep, quality time.  Enjoy your child(ren).
• Believe in Your Child—By doing so, parents provide opportunity and courage for her to fulfill your new, positive expectations.
• Allow Independence—Teach your child to think and take personal responsibility.
• Remain Calm and Detached—Empty ourselves of anger, resentment, fear, and guilt.

Here are concepts in action:

Child:    I got a bad evaluation from the teacher today.  If she was any good, I’d ace this class! (Negative invitation)

Parent: So she’s good at preventing her students from learning?

Child:    Well, she doesn’t help me learn!

Parent: So what would help you learn and do well in her class?  (Positive invitation/Problem-solve)

Child:    I don’t know, maybe a tutor.  (Response)

Parent: We could find a tutor for that class, but what about missed assignments?

Child:    Yeah, I’ve missed some.  I’ll finish them.

We can’t take our emotions for granted.  They govern our behavior, even when we don’t realize it.  Immature families, especially when under stress, communicate that feelings are wrong.  Family members react to each other.  The overriding message is, “You shouldn’t feel what you’re feeling.”  (Dr. Randy Reynolds, child psychologist)

I hear ya!  Emotions—especially strong ones—intensify and magnify issues.  Emotions, at times, finger point—”It’s your fault, not mine!”

Really?  How?

• Empathize.  Validate your child’s feelings but stand firm on your decision: “It sounds like you’re frustrated because I won’t let you wear jeans today.  I know that’s hard for you, but I’m not going to change my mind.”
• Discipline, don’t punish.  Discipline is patient and goal-oriented; punishment is motivated by anger or reactivity.

 What else?

• Affirm, acknowledge, respect, create a sense of belonging, and appreciate each other.  Full emotional tanks give members room to express themselves.  Relax.  Enjoy simple pleasures.
• As families mature, they shame each other less; respond to each other more.  They listen to others without reacting.  They assert without antagonizing.  Families set realistic expectations.  They know they’re interdependent, and flex with the normal stresses of life.

“Learn to own your feelings.  Don’t blame others when you communicate.  Begin sentences with ‘I’ messages, not ‘you’.” . . . “‘I feel . . . when . . .’“

Respect, bar none!  I can’t make anyone do anything willingly.  You can’t make me, either.

Yet, when under intense stress, I find myself demanding unconditional obedience from my children, not respect.

It’s time to change — to recognize and minimize counterproductive behaviors. 

How, Dr. Reynolds?

• Respect grows when parents listen instead of just hear.  Value what your child says and attempt to understand his reality and his feelings.  Reflect (“So what you’re saying is …,” “I see you’re …”).
• Respect requires trust.  A child cannot trust the parent who does not listen.  Personal responsibility and interdependence — each person doing his part to keep the relationship healthy — is essential for building trust.  Hold children accountable.  Communicate with conviction, “You can do it!”                                                                     

Okay, but I need concrete tools.  How do I continue building trust and earning my children’s respect?

• Talk directly with the person — child or adult — who upsets you rather than to someone else.
• Too overwhelmed to talk?  Find a neutral third-party to coach you.
• Child/Parent conflict?  Encourage your child to talk directly to your spouse; not through you.
• Do not rescue or interfere with your spouse’s parenting, even if you disagree.  Discuss differences privately.  Form a united front.
• When you discipline, spend one-on-one time with your child.  Secure your bond with him.

I don’t know who has and who hasn’t been introduced to  my friend “Stumble Upon“, so let me dissolve any tension in the room by introducing you all formally to the most distracting computer program of all time. When using Stumble Upon, after programming in your personal search preferences, the program will take you to a random website by simply clicking a button. This is actually a lot more fun than it sounds and way more addicting than any human being can handle. Nicotine and Crystal Meth are easier to quit than “stumbling the internet” is at four in the morning. It will take away your ability to study, destroy your love life and make your normal sleep patterns a thing of the past. I’m here to offer a remedy, or if you will, a sacrifice on your behalf. I will do it for you. That’s right, I’ll give up my free time and I will find you interesting sites in my newest segment, “Let Me Stumble For You.”

1. We are living in dismal times. If for some reason you wanted a reminder of just how dismal things are I found a “map” of the unemployment in our country. It shows the unemployment differences throughout the country and compares it to years past as well. If you’re in a good mood and don’t want to ruin it – you might want to skip off to number two. If you are having an OK day and don’t mind it getting ruined by a 23-year-old with too much free time then you can read about it here.

2. Lord of the Rings nerds unite for this link. It’s actually pretty boring but it’s a cool looking picture of the Earth on a map upside down. It looks like an old treasure man – actually would probably make a cool background. Doesn’t serve any practical purpose but I’m not here for any purpose.

3. We, ironically, waste so much money printing money and I’ve always wanted to know just how much. Yes, I think about things like this when I’m bored… Actually now that I think about it, I think of things like this all the time. Regardless, I found a guide to the money in our country and how much of it is in circulation. Might make you think twice about picking up those pennies – apparently a lot floating around in those pools.

4. If you either love shopping or you’re just a glutton for punishment you probably like going shopping on Black Friday. The long lines, the miserable people, and the failing checkout systems might actually bring a little Christmas cheer to some people. God knows I love it. It’s never too soon to start keeping an eye out for the best bargains of the year. I found a place that lists all the deals as soon as they’re announced. Perhaps you should bookmark this one because, like it or not, Thanksgiving is only 19 days away people.

5. Ok let’s end the night with a little comedy. We all love to laugh at other people’s stupidity – I’m here to embrace and facilitate that. Enjoy folks – you’ll sleep better now that you didn’t have to “stumble”. You’ve learned your pointless facts for the day and gotten some cheap laughs too. If you ask me that compensates for all your sins. Then again I wouldn’t me ask me but that’s your fault in the first place.

Today, I was peacefully browsing along. All was well and quiet. Then suddenly some xylophone music starts playing. So now I’m frantically looking through my 20 something tabs to try find the abomination and shut it off. I can’t find anywhere to turn off this music, and I’m not really even sure which page it is as there isn’t any indication anywhere that there is even music… I had to close everything.

Don’t put music that automatically plays on your pages. It’s nothing but annoying & infuriating.

Whatever you do, do NOT put heavy metal music as the page load music.

Anyways.

I stumbled upon: stumble upon (Ba da boom ching).

I had heard of this site before, but a friend directed me to it again today. It is one of the better sites to use up spare time. Not just a time waster, but a useful time waster. You can input your area of interest, then it will take you to sites that relate in some way to that area. Often uncovering gems that you would come across no other way.

Give it a try, it’s quite fun.

Halloween no puede haberse pasado mejor! Bueno, si puede, pero éste está pretty up there! jajaja Mucho party, disfraz caluroso con cojones pero tan y tan perfecto (thanks Dan!), disfraces cabrones, ver a mucha gente que no veia hace tiempo, lo jugetona que fue la noche, muchas cosas. En verdad que no me quejo. Good memories para halloween 09.

Así que ahora empezó noviembre.

Después de un wikén tan intenso como el pasado tengo que admitir que me alegra mucho. Llega noviembre y ya empieza a oscurecer más temprano, ya se siente el ambiente navideño en todos lados y ya no pasamos por los calores del verano.

Me da risa cuando la gente dice que en Puerto Rico no se siente el cambio en temporadas, por que no es la verdad. Quizá no sea tan marcado como en USA o en España, pero si se nota.  No te das cuenta en marzo – abril cuando empieza a azotar el calor? O ahora como en octubre que ya oscurece como a las 630pm y no hace tanto calor como en los meses anteriores?

Noviembre se ve como un mes prometedor. Empieza el frio y las noches largas, el concierto de The Killers, llega Where The Wild Things Are al cine y Thanksgiving.

Ay Thanksgiving! Creo que es mi 3er dia favorito en el año (después de Navidad y Halloween). Bueno, 4to día favorito por que también esta mi cumpleaños. Dios mío que rica es la comida de thanksgiving! El pavo, el stuffing, el flan de calabaza de abuela. Na mas de hablar de esto se me hace la boca agua. También es que llega Thanksgiving y es el comienzo oficial de las navidades hasta enero cuando acaban con las fiestas de la calle.

Ayer por la noche no tenía mucho que hacer so me puse a ver las páginas que tenia en los favorites. Tengo que admitir que me paso dándole command + d (esto es bookmark en safari) cuando veo algún site que me gusta para así volver y bajar la canción o ver el video o la foto. Lo que sea.

Otra admisión es que en las computadoras me gusta tener las cosas bien sencillas. Osea, en el Google Reader no me gusta tener nada unread y en mis inbox de email tampoco. Así que como tengo un montón de favorites en mi Safari decidí que iba a ir borrando los que tengo pero no sin antes compartirlos. Este será un continuing post para seguir poniendo el reguerete de cosas que tengo.

• TuneGlue – Para los amantes de la música como yo, este site esta cabrón. Pones algún artista o canción que te gusta y te hace un mapa conceptual de artistas o canciones parecidas.
• VoiceDraw – el nombre lo dice todo. Necesitas un microfono.
• Font Generator - Mi mamá y yo amamos este site. Te da la habilidad de crear un font para tu computadora usando tu letra. Es BIEEEEN COOOL!
• Fold your shirt - Quiero aprender a hacer esto! jaja

Mashable, Techcrunch, Gizmodo and Huffington Post posts are re-tweeted over and over again. Brian Sollis, Seth Godin and a couple more bloggers’ posts are all over Twitter and other social media channels. Even traditional news and media publishers now have vast social media presence.  I can only praise the great quality of these bloggers, thinkers, thoughts leaders, reporters and analytical brains. I have one small observation: lately, social media and twitter in particular, are making it actually hard for me to share yours!

Few observation:

• It is hard for me to share links from the sources mentioned above. When I see it, the link is already shared so many times, and across so many social media outlets, that there is no point for me to share it again. It seems as if these blog posts are everywhere almost as soon as they come out.
• It is getting hard to find the second and third tier of bloggers. Maybe here lies the new potential for services like blog and twitter search engines. Give me the option to exclude the top 10, 100, 1000 most known/shared blogs.
• This is why I don’t like Digg but I do like StumbleUpon!
• I like to get to know some bloggers from the new long tail – the bloggers from the old one seems to move up to the bell area and joined the mass media.

The irony is that sharing is one of the Social Media corner stones.

Cognitive dissonance (from Wikipedia) – is a psychological term describing the uncomfortable tension that may result from having two conflicting thoughts at the same time, or from engaging in behavior that conflicts with one’s beliefs, or from experiencing apparently conflicting phenomena.

I don’t usually web surf that much, so I cant really give you an accurate rating for this site, because I don’t know what it is in comparison to other websites; so, if any of you veteran stumbleuponers can give me a more accurate rating, I’ll be really happy with you.

Anyway, I was checking my email one day and a link to this website showed upon on the website’s homepage. It said “Throw These Boots In Your Dishwasher.” So naturally I had to click on it. But before I did I read the blurb that accompanied the headline and photo. It ended with ‘Plus, it can cook!’ If I weren’t already convinced that I had to go to that site, this would have definitely convinced me. So I clicked on it, and went to the site and it’s just a list of crazy shit that you can wash in your dishwasher and some shit that you can’t put in your dishwasher. That’s how thorough these guys are, they predicted possible misperceptions that you could have about the article, and decided to pre-empt the seven most probable misperceptions. That’s how thorough these guys are. About shit you can put in your dishwasher. These guys are more thorough about accurately reporting what you can put in your dishwasher than all the major news networks are about fact-checking healthcare. The dishwasher people are the more dedicated reporters in the United States. That itself is hilarious. Plus, you can cook salmon in the dishwasher now. That basically means that if you had a giant thanksgiving dinner and it’s like, huge, and you don’t have any more silverware left, you can just cook salmon while cleaning your plates. If you think about it, there’s nothing really that significant about that, it’s just a funny concept.

Anyway, I hope all of you will realize exactly how versatile your dishwasher is after reading this article.

I hardly know where to start, and that is the point.

With so many choices and so many “brands” engaging audiences with social media, and so many people already with a feed of some sort, whether it is their Facebook friends’ status updates, the breaking news, a new product line, or all of the above.

Everything has a fan page and a group from Starbucks, to CNN, to Walmart and Harley Davidson!

Additionally, if you are a budding journo or writer of any kind, there is the all the advice:  how to engage your target audience, how to have a web presence, how to make a strategic social media plan for your small business, and why you can’t survive without online social media.

Does anyone else feel we are in a fun house of mirrors when newspapers and magazines have blogs with sharing features? Because, writers, we are there.

It just appears ridiculous that newspapers and magazines, which have official online pages with all sorts of sharing and commenting features already, now have blogs about the publication that can be shared and commented on too!

But then everyone is doing it.

And because everyone is doing it my nature is not chomping at the bit, but pulling at the reigns with rebellion.

WHAT I DON’T LIKE ABOUT SOCIAL MEDIA NOW

It has become so easy to share . . .

It has become so easy to share that sharing has become the equivalent of the forward–the email that your contact sent to everyone in their contact list because Naked Santa Dancing was so funny or because they wanted to remind you that they love you with hearts and think of you even if they never actually write one personal email in over a year.

May you offenders of friendship hang your heads in shame!

Some of my contacts are so indiscriminate that I have used a filter in order to not see what they wanted to share.

It is not easy enough to share…

It is not easy enough to share across different social media.  I have some journo friends on Facebook and some on Twitter, so when I want to share an article or witticism, in the past I had to post and repost (which I didn’t most times).

Now some sharing is resolved with TweetDeck which enables me to have multiple accounts which have different focuses . . . or is that foci?

With the multiple accounts, friends, families and contacts can subscribe (or better yet in some cases, not subscribe) to my feed and I can be more judicious about what I share to who.

Sharing Effectively takes a degree of organization . . .

Sharing effectively takes a certain degree of organization, and generally, the general public is already struggling with organization in their everyday lives, myself included.

I’ve made it an objective or a task to organize my sharing and to be judicious, but to expect if from others is unreasonable.

More explicitly, to expect organization, focus, and judicious sharing from your fast living, highly stressed, multi-tasking audience who have lives to maintain, is unreasonable.

Because of the assault instigated by social media provocateurs, mega brands, and the stupid . . .

Because of the assault instigated by social media provocateurs, mega brands, and the stupid, we now live in a society where competing for attention has gotten to such a level as to be a constant drone.

And because of the spam campaigns waged with social media and the hype campaigns proliferated by those who would sell that strategy, the audience, myself included, is becoming more distant even though social media is in the palm of our hands.

So we have 1. too many options, 2. too many options that do not cross communicate, and 3. an inattentive audience created by mass marketing.

So what is to be done . . .

I’ve decided that . . .

• Slow and steady will win the race.
• A real connection to a niche group is more work but more satisfying and effective.
• I want to create awareness with my OSM, be sought out, and be tuned into, therefor, no spam.
• Hope that TweetDeck will inspire more collaboration between OSM networks.

In other words, parents, don’t live through your child.  Get a life.  Work on issues, challenges, dreams, goals . . . Hmm . . . Much easier said than done. 

Taking risks, changing, (possible) failure . . . they CAN be scary.  It’s easier to blame someone else (e.g., a strong-willed child) for life’s difficulties than own up to our deficiencies.

But life’s lessons we choose to ignore will resurface until we learn.  Do we learn them now, later, or never?

Healthy parents, healthy kids — happiness!
