Those readers of my blog who are of a- how can I put this? – geeky disposition, and those who self-define as hardened political hacks, whose years of standing and voting in elections, have breed an intimate knowledge of electoral systems and statistics, might appreciate this gem!

Basically, ITV’s ‘The X Factor’ have embraced democracy and transparency and posted the full shares of the vote each contestant received in each round. After weeks of wild claim, sketchy speculation, and rabid rumour, the actual results are very insightful.

A very quick perusal reveals that in the Final Stacey’s transfers slightly favoured Olly over eventual victor Joe, after Show 6 Jedward were cruelly despatched, despite winning more popular votes than Olly, and prehaps most poignant of all, Danyl Johnson (or De-nial as my Mum pronounces his name) received a stonking 27.1% of the vote in Round 1 in a field of 12 candidates, a 14-point lead over his nearest rival.

Danyl may not have won, but he can now rest assured in the knowledge that proportional representation in the form of an exhaustive ballot conducted under STV would have given him the X factor.

So, so relevant. And a perfect gentleman. Not for him a trawl through the old BBH ads (of which there are dozens of gems to showcase); no, he talked a lot about the digital world (and how it fits so well with TV which remains at the heart of any really succesful brand campaign) and the opportunities it held in the midst of a deep recession where the guard could easily change fundamentally.

He waxed lyrical about X factor and the renewed vigour of ITV (and STV) as a vibrant and exciting audience builder.

By Rory Reynolds

BELEAGUERED broadcaster STV has been rapped for breaching media regulations.

Broadcast regulator Ofcom has ruled that the channel’s popular Business Briefing programme was in breach of the Broadcasting Code by being sponsored by STV Jobs.

The Broadcasting Code – which is enforced by Ofcom – prohibits the “sponsorship of news and current affairs programmes”.

STV said that the Business Briefing, which followed the main 10.00pm news bulletin, featured a clause stating that the briefing was a “short specialist report following a news programme – including sport, travel and weather reports – may be sponsored.”

However Ofcom said yesterday that Business Briefing was in breach of the Broadcasting Code.It said that by attributing the rise in the number of public sector workers to “the Government’s rescue of the stricken banking sector” the programme had “clearly dealt with matters of political and industrial controversy.”

It also added that programmes such as sport, travel and weather “do not deal with matters of political or industrial controversy” – whereas Business Briefing had.

They concluded by saying “STV Business Briefings went beyond providing factual market information – which may be sponsored.”

The Scottish broadcaster welcomed the “clarification”, but added that previous guidelines were “unclear”.

A spokesperson said: “STV welcomes Ofcom’s clarification regarding the sponsorship of short specialist reports within news, as we believe the previous guidelines were unclear on this matter.

“We plan to re-introduce our Business Briefings in future and the sponsorship around these reports will reflect the clearer guidance that Ofcom has now provided.”

Hello, Firstly, I’m still begging for more hits & comments on all my articles in STV

Hello,
Firstly, I’m still begging for more hits & comments on all my articles in STV’s Write Factor competition. I’m in the final ten contenders, and we’ve spent the past 4 weeks contributing articles. We’ve been told that the winner will be decided by a combination of hits & comments generated, and by consistency of quality. I’d really appreciate it if you could have a look at my articles and leave a comment on them. You have to set up an STV account to post a comment but it doesn’t take long to do. The competition closes on Sunday 6th of December, so I really need you to do it before then, please.

The prize is a 6month contract to write online articles for STV. Basically, that would give me a regular income for 6 months, which is the holy grail for a freelancer.

You can find all my articles by clicking the link below, then scrolling down to find me (Teddy Craig):

THE WRITE FACTOR

Episode 4 of my gag podcast has also just gone online. It’s just a quickie podcast of about a couple of minutes so it’s not too daunting a listen. You can find it by clicking here:

PODCAST EPISODE 4

And now gags:

Prisons these days are all mod cons. Which must be awkward if any rockers get sent to them.

If attack really is the best form of defence, why did going apeshit with an uzi at my trial lead to an increased sentence?

Thick people – is it just that their train of thought is being operated by Virgin Rail?

Playing truth or dare…is the mark of someone’s who’s been a high court judge for far too long.

I did a solo on my guitar. Took me ages to wipe the spunk off the strings.

I used to go out with a timid petrol station assistant, but it was difficult to get her to come out of her Shell.

I managed to trace my parents. Now all I have to do is colour the picture in.

My printer’s broken. His wife left him.

I’ve heard a lot of people make snooty comments about Blue Nun, but I have to say I think she’s Dundee’s top stripper.

What’s that phrase? Sometimes you can’t see the Woods for the… group of women knelt in front of him sucking his cock.

If you pass these jokes on anywhere, please credit www.comedyteddy.wordpress.com in doing so. I publish these gags up here for free to try to showcase my skills so I don’t think that’s much to ask.

You can see me:

Saturday 5th of December: Sidesplitters Comedy Club @ The Harbour Arts Centre, Irvine.

Monday 7th of December: The Stand Comedy Club, Edinburgh

Thanks,

Hello!

Can I remind you that the STV online writer contest runs until Dec 6th. I have probably another 4 articles to go up on the site between now and then, and hits & comments generated go towards deciding the winner.

You can find my articles here: STV Write Factor

If you could comment on them I’d really appreciate it. Thanks!

41yr old adoptee in USA traced his real dad & found it was Charles Manson. You know adoptive parents are going “Ha! Win!”

‘Celeb’ chef Gino D’Acampo did time for stealing guitars from Paul Young. Him & Sam Fox have crimes against music in common.

My last comedy gig got rave reviews. A couple of guys with glow sticks blowing whistles throughout.

Next time a zookeeper gets attacked by animals, should it be released on dvd with Motson shouting “only the keeper to beat!”

Slight mix-up. My girlfriend told me she wanted Cam fun. I beat the shit out of my mate Cameron.

This self-assessment form is confusing. I’ve just done the self assessment, but can’t find where to put ‘no lumps found’.

If you got hooked on the intensity of farewell sex, would you be bye-sexual?

Hi,

Two new articles from me in the STV contest have gone up. I need you to read them and post comments on them (on the STV site) to help me…

One article is on our attitudes to space travel, sparked by me reading about the death of a cosmonaut from the 1960s, and the wife of a current astronaut giving birth while he was in space:

Astronauts article

The other article is about a Canadian singer called Justin Bieber tweeting about a personal appearance, which led to a crush. Because “his people” initially refused police demands to tweet telling the crowd to disperse, an executive at Def Jam records was arrested:

Power of Twitter article

Just a reminder, I’m in the last 10 of STV’s contest to find a new writer for their online content. Hits & comments generated go towards deciding the eventual winner. There are another 3 weeks of articles to go, but here are links to the ones I’ve done so far. If you could read and comment on them (on the STV site) I’d really appreciate it.

1st article is here

2nd article is here

3rd article is here

Now on with the jokes:

As a Rangers fan, it’s disappointing that the words “Rangers fine” now always refer to a financial penalty, not a status report.

Old Firm told the Premiership doesn’t want them. He should stick to supporting Raith Rovers and shut it.

Griffin to form Pan-European party with Le Pen to end EU. Seeking Pan-European cooperation to end Pan-European cooperation.

Dimbleby to miss his first Question Time in 15years due to being injured by bullock. After all the bullocks he’s coped with on the show.

All references to Xmas dropped from Dundee Festive Lights ceremony. Fair enough. Hard to live in Dundee and believe in God.

Got a letter from lawyer saying he was acting on behalf of his client. Surely client would have been better hiring an actor?

I confused a guy into stopping hitting me by doing Brando in the Godfather. I was acting in self-defence.

When the stock market went up, I made a killing. Because I knew at least I could afford the lawyer.

Buy low and sell high isn’t sound advice for depressed drug addict shopkeepers.

I was switching channels on the TV last night. Most people just use the remote, but I’m really into S&M.

Introducing blanket bans. Doesn’t bother me. I prefer duvets.

I used to work as a pen pusher. How those kids managed to inject the biros is beyond me.

Ended up in a live yoghurt throwing fight. It was a culture clash.

If Gerard Butler had done 300 in his interview voice: “This is SPARDA!”

Never let your girlfriend change the dressing on your wound after an argument. She changed it to vinaigrette dressing.

Local paper got in touch to ask me for a feature. I sent them a picture of my nose.

Customer satisfaction surveys – does having a wank on one count as completing it?

Going to get tartan wallpaper for my twitter profile to be safe. Apparently background checks stop sex offenders.

Got raped by a man in tartan once. He’s on the checks offender register now.

Comic book writers: How about a dumb superhero? That way Ben Affleck has no lines to say badly.

Got arrested for kerb crawling. I wasn’t in the red light zone. Being pissed and on all fours will get you lifted though.

I got a little behind at work. I work in the pathology room, it was a souvenir.

Apparently Hansel & Gretel had really soft hands from doing the witch’s washing up. But I don’t believe in Fairy tales.

Sun say after Children in Need concert, Cheryl wanted to party, but Ashley wanted early night. Wonder who with?

Smeato says slept in on election day because he was up all night playing MW2. “Views on Afghan conflict John?” “It’s my favourite level!”

“Twist and Shout” a song containing messages to GPs to abuse patients during testicular examinations.

Burley tried to distract attention from score by making himself up like an Apache warrior. He’s just putting on a brave face.

I went to a needlework class. Turned out to be a seminar on heroin dealing.

Surely our taxes should pay for all our food and drink? If we really want to build an all-inclusive society…

If you donate sperm, does that mean you can count going on porn sites as internet banking?

People who donate to a sperm bank then later become impotent – are they going into their overdraft?

Farmer caught me shagging all his young goats. Tried to tell him I was just kidding.

Mint I got given with the restaurant bill’s just told me I’m handsome. It was complimentary.

Challenged a tramp to a fight using his favourite weapon, but he lost his bottle.

Modern art degrees. You have to study really quickly before the paintings get old.

Big difference between and interpreter and an interpretative dancer but would make UN meetings more fun.

My lips are chapping. Perhaps my fingers will be better at dominoes.

Floating voter – someone thrown in a lake after voting against the mafia-approved candidate.

Cash in the Attic would be far better if it was about how to hide a hostage in your attic.

I didn’t like the food in Greece. Their Alphabetti Spaghetti was different.

I’ve pretty much stopped going out. There’s too many undesirables. Or men, as I believe they’re called.

I used to play for a football team, but I only knew them in passing. Shooting.Tackling…

Men with a fetish for women on their period – should they be called rag & bone men?

The man I tied up had sex with me. Well, he was bound to.

Just killed the other entrants in a best allotment contest. I won’t have anyone plotting against me.

If Liam Rosenior signed for Man City, would their fans embrace him as a Rosenior Citizen?

I tried to have an argument in space, but I carry no weight there.

I hold a packet of lentils when I write. It’s important to keep your finger on the pulse.

“Never a borrow nor a lender be” my gran used to say. She was a very bitter librarian.

Had sex with a geeky girl. Afterwards she shat herself. She apologised. “I’m sorry, I always log out at the end of a session.”

I spat the dummy at work. It’s fine though. I work as an adult baby fetish rentboy.

Keep seeing the phrase “God’s Sake”. Just how much Japanese rice wine is he getting through?

Shadow Cabinet – where wizards keep shadows.

I asked for feedback on my stand-up gig. Unfortunately that meant nobody could hear me.

Front page of News Of The World is Jedward caught watching porn. What could be more shocking than finding out they’re normal?

M&S launching own range of pot noodles. Does this mean the middle classes are getting poorer, or students are getting richer?

“Scottish Defence League” mounted demo in Glasgow on Saturday. Two disgraceful Scottish Defence displays in one day.

Turns out research scientist wrote ‘Belle de Jour’. “I applied external stimulus to the cock and observed a reaction…”

I was shipwrecked. By which I mean I was drinking Cutty Sark whisky and got pissed.

Matchfixing – Just throw it away and light another one instead you tight bastard.

Just knocked back a pint of boiling water and a tin of baked beans. I wanted to let off some steam.

If you pass these jokes on anywhere, please credit www.comedyteddy.wordpress.com in doing so. I publish these gags up here for free to try to showcase my skills so I don’t think that’s much to ask. Thanks.

Yadımdadır STV də altdan altdan bu arqumenti yeridirdi, heyvanlara aid xarici sənədli filmləri dublyaj eləyib göstərirdilər. Hansısa heyvanın, bitkinin maraqlı xüsusiyyəti deyilirdi, axirda və ya əvvəldə də “belə mükəmməl şəkildə yaradılmışdı”, “ yüce Allah bu heyvanları bu xüsusiyyətlə təchiz eləmişdi” və s. kimi sözlər əlavə eləyirdilər. Originalda təbii ki belə sözlər yox idi.

Bunların fəlsəfədəki nümunəsi William Paley`in saat analogiyasıdır. Səhrada gəzərkən yerdə bir saat görürük. Baxırıq ki saat çox gözəl şəkildə dizayn edilib və mexanizmi işləyir. Qərara gəlirik ki bunun arxasında bir ağıl-dərrakə sahibi dizayner var. Ömrümüzdə saat görməmiş olsaq da qərara gələ bilərik ki belə kompleks və qeyri-adi bir cihaz öz başına yarana bilməz, bunu kimsə düzəldib.

Dizayner kimdir?

Bu arqument(lər)i çürütməyin ən qısa yolu “Dizayner kimdir?” sualıdır.

D: Dindar A: Ateist

A: Bəlkə Göydə Uçan Spagetti Monstru yaradıb dünyanı?

D: Hanı dəlilin?

A: Spagetti Monstru üçün dəlil istəyirsənsə, mən də Allah üçün dəlil istəyirəm. Deməli bu dediyin “dünya arqumenti” heç nəyi isbat eləmədi. Yenə də başqa arqument-dəlil lazım oldu.

Təbii ki bu dialoq sadəcə bir praktik nümunədir, normalda dizayn arqumenti fəlsəfi cəhətdən heç “yaradıcı agentin” necə nə cür kim olduğunu açıqlamır. Bunu da bütün fəlsəfəçilər bilir. Mən sadəcə Paley`in analogiyasının standart bir dindar arqumentinə mutasiya edilmiş formasına aid dialoq yazdım.

Yuxarıdaki “Dizayner kimdir bəs” sualını həmən arqumentin istənilən formasında istifadə eləmək olar, insan bədəni, saat, rəsm, kainat, göz, hüceyrə və s.

Keçək arqumentin digər problemlərinə:

Elm vs Mif

İnsan və canlı aləmlə bağlı olan dizayn məsələsinin elmi açıqlaması var. Bu açıqlama hər şeyi çox gözəl açıqlayır, və elm dünyası tərəfindən tam qəbul edilib. Bu da təbii ki təbiətdəki təkamül mexanizmidir. Normalda bu iki açıqlamanın “mutually exclusive” olması – yəni ikisindən birinin doğru olması, bu arqument üçün vacib deyil. Yəni bir nəfər deyə bilər ki, məsələn göz təkamül nəticəsində olub, amma yenə də bunun yaradıcısı var. Düzdür bu çox cətindir, çünkü bir obyekti açıqlayan iki teoriya var, bunlardan mümkün, məntiqli olanı, vəya elmi tərəfdən dəstəklənəni qəbul etmək daha məntiqlidir. Canlı aləmi üçün bu arqumenti istifadə eləmək o qədər də uğurlu alınmır nəticə etibarı ilə, çünkü təkamül açıqlaması yetərlidir, hansısa üstün super tanrıya ehtiyac duyulmur (açıqlama gətirmək üçün).

İldırım və qaranlıqlar Tanrısı

Tarixdən bir neçə nümunə də vermək olar. Mayalılar və digər qədim xalqlar/qəbilələr təbii proseslərə mifik xüsusiyyətlər qoşurdular. Məsələn, ildırım və ya günəşin tutulması – Tanrının qəzəbi, Tanrının zülmlə mübarizəsi, qurban istəməsi və s. O vaxtki düşüncə tərzi demək olar ki indi də var. Bilinməyən şeyi Tanrı ilə doldurmaq – God of the Gaps.

XEYR. Biz bu dünyanın şəraitlərində əmələ gəlmişik. Yəni dünya bizə yox, biz dünyaya uyğunlaşmışıq. Suyu hər hansı bir qaba tökürsən, su həmən formanı alır. Su da deyir ki gör bu qab necə də mükəmməldir, tam mənə görə dizayn edilib, sırf mən bu qaba rahat şəkildə sığışım deyə. Yuxarıdakı arqument də bu suyun sözlərinə oxşayır. İnsan özündən o qədər razıdır ki, hər şeyin özü üçün yaradıldığını düşünür. Kainatda qum dənəsi olan insan, özünü kainatın mərkəzi kimi görür. Ona görə də Tanrını, nə məqsədlə olur olsun (imtahandı hər nədi), öz arzularının, egolarının agenti kimi istifadə eləyir.

Dizaynerin Dizayneri – Infinite Regress

I realise I have been lacking in blogs recently. It wasn’t that I was lacking time, but rather

I realise I have been lacking in blogs recently. It wasn’t that I was lacking time, but rather that the Seagull was very “regular” and I struggled to find anything to blog about. It was very classical, and maybe not quite my thing, but still good fun to work on. As always I learned new things as I went, but found that the show was quite technically bare. Nothing went wrong, in fact I think everything went really well, but I don’t know if I came across many notable points for reflection.

I don’t think tech week got off to the best start. Monday and Tuesday were LX focus and plot. As TSM crew I found this long and tedious. Perhaps it was because I knew we had a long list of things to do, but we couldn’t do any of them because everything had to be done in silence, in the dark without disturbing anyone. I am happy to sit about and do nothing if there is nothing to do, but otherwise I want to be working away through the list. Anyway, by the time Tuesday afternoon came, I had visited the library and taken out some books to keep me occupied. As the week went on, it got better and better, and we all seemed to agree that Friday afternoon was a fantastic session and we managed to get almost everything in order by then ready for the first dress.

Opening night went really well, but I am also glad we had the dress in the afternoon to make sure we had it all sorted, especially after the changes made. Mostly I am impartial to the changes, but I am disappointed that the Kabukis were cut since we had worked really hard and I thought they looked pretty good.

I think, on the whole, the production was a success, but I found it quite deceiving. When you looked at the design/lighting/tech stuff/general show, it should have been a really straight forward fit-up and show in most aspects, but somehow even near the end of the tech week we were still encountering small problems to overcome and looking back, perhaps there were a few issues which would have been easier to resolve had a different approach been taken. Had it been a longer run I think we should have implemented some more permanent solutions for a few of the more time consuming tasks such as the velcro on the trellises which kept ripping off.

I really enjoyed working Automation and Flies since I felt more involved in the process. I know every job is important, but sometimes when I am the person on the deck tidying-up, coiling rope or holding a bit of wood while someone else drills a hole in it, I feel like a bit of a spare part. I tried to lend a hand with the tedious tasks where I could, but it was nice to get a change in responsibilities and I think it has helped me appreciate one of the most important and dangerous things about working off the deck (but especially on the fly floor) which is communication. While the show was simple, during the fit-up and strike I seemed to have a list of requests which people were adding to by the minute. They were manageable, but I often found myself having four conversations at once and trying to make it very clear which bar was going in, which one was going out and which one had now been clipped while also trying to keep tabs on the weight and positions of bars and lines. All this is made more difficult by other people working around you, chatting and calling to each other across the stage, grid or auditorium.

All in all, The Seagull went well and I was happy with the work I did, but doubt it will make it into my five favourite shows. Next up is Panto which I am really looking forward to. I just have a good feeling that we will all be suitably challenged by the show, and with it being bigger and more complex I am sure there will be more chances for us to take different responsibilities onboard. It’s too early to tell for sure, but I think it might be a good choice for Scott and I to leave after fit-up and begin to work on War and Peace since it sounds like it will be a huge production, gives the first year crew more opportunities and responsibilities on Panto and also means we get the experience of doing two challenging fit-ups without having to endure all the performances of Panto!
