Live. Laugh. Love.

My daughter has this expression all throughout her room. I love that she is thinking about filling her life with laughter, love and a hunger for life. That is a passion that I hope she never loses.

It’s a passion that moves along the highway of my life. Sometimes it is a struggle to keep the laughter going in the midst of the chaos or to live life fully when demands weigh me down. But I keep these things within my mind’s eye and keep reaching for them as I come up for air. And I am so thankful to have a wonderful best friend that holds me sway, reminding me that I have a lot to live for, laugh at (usually that would include me being my silly self), and much love to give and receive.

I hope you have that one person in your life… a love, a best friend, a sibling, a parent… that walks through this journey with you laughing, living and loving.

AFRICAN VINTAGE BRIDAL SHOOT

Last year I was walking down Brick Lane when my phone rang, and Funmi from FO Photography called me asking if I wanted to collaborate with Elizabeth from Elizabeth’s Cake Emporium on a shoot with a difference.

Obviously I was over the moon at the opportunity to work with these talented ladies and the rest of the team that was on board!

I met with Elizabeth and we instantly hit it off. What a stunning girl!

She wanted me to create 2 different doodles for 2 of the cakes that she would be making for the shoot. I was super excited and began sketching a few ideas. In the end Elizabeth chose her favourites and I then hand drew my designs on Elizabeths cakes.

If you have not yet had the opportunity, you HAVE TO taste how yummy Elizabeth’s Cake Emporium cakes are! They are delicious!

I was lucky enough to go and help then out on the day of the shoot at Quendon Hall.

She’s turning 7 in a few days and she tugged at my sleeve, wide eyed and curious to ask if she could have her very own, just-by-herself birthday photo shoot this year.

It’s a tradition in our home to mark each daughter’s birthday with a special photo shoot. Past years have included both our girls in the same shoot in early spring (in between both their birthday months), usually as soon as a sunny day appeared in Vancouver.

Apparently, turning seven years old is different. Seven seems like the edge of a new world. A 7-year old makes their own friends, they can do the monkey bars on the school ground, they request to get their ears pierced, they can read and write and they question the legitimacy of both the tooth fairy and Santa.

So, her-very-own shoot it was. I warned her it was cold and snowy out. She was okay with it.

Sometimes styled shoots require lots of planning and meticulous organization. Sometimes, it’s as simple as grabbing the vase of white mum’s off the centre of the table, fashioning a hairpiece with twist ties and those old Valentine’s flowers, pulling the antique coat out of grandma’s closet and braving up for a 20 minute shoot in the snow.

We laughed and called it her “Narnia coat,” it was clearly too large for her, but it kept her warm all the same. How fitting that this magical 7-year-old of mine is traipsing around in a fur coat, off on new adventures of her own in childhood.

The monogrammed initials inside the coat of my daughter’s late great-great grandmother.

A note on the fur: While I wouldn’t go out to purchase fur myself, this garment belonged to my great grandmother. We chose it for legacy purposes (as well to coordinate a vintage look and also for the re-purposing value). It really was a very practical coat before the scientific man-made materials that are out there now to protect in -45 Celsius!

When I saw the subject line of Amanda Johnson’s (the mastermind behind Butterfly Petals) submission, I knew I was in for something special. How could I not be excited by the idea of a Haunted Desert photoshoot? To say that the photos met my expectations would be QUITE the understatement…take a look for yourself at these ridiculously dreamy photos of her jaw dropping floral creations and then read all about the inspiration for this shoot at Scorpion Gulch below.

Description of the Photo Shoot and Florals by Butterfly Petals

I wanted to create a design experience that embraces the stark beauty of the Arizona desert. I used elements such as cactus skeleton, cacti, succulents, and other desert materials. I’ve done many styled shoots and we usually have the bride and groom models and staged vignettes–for this piece I really wanted it to be all about Arizona–from the floral creations to the location. No people, just cool desert pieces dressed up with a little bit of pretty flowers.

To create an ethereal and haunted effect, we shot at dawn The light coming through the windows onto the table created an amazing atmosphere. I also loved that it seemed equally remote and private. A couple dining there would have the place to themselves, with only the desert creatures looking on.

We chose Scorpion Gulch as the location for the shoot- it is an abandoned house and store created in the 1930′s, and built using supplies found in the natural desert in which it stands. The original rooms of this uniquely Arizonan venue are mostly intact, but wear and tear from decades of blistering Arizona summers has taken it’s toll and created a definitively aged and rustic patina that can’t be fabricated. It’s popular for photoshoots and I’ve been drooling over images of the place online and dying to do something there for sometime.

The table scape was built on a base of claimed elk antlers, shed after the previous elk season of Northern Arizona.We created the chandelier above the table using 150-year-old barbed wire, from a working ranch here in Arizona. Antique deer and antelope antlers also make an appearance; the antelope horns form a one-of-a-kind handle for an elegant and whimsical bouquet, while a set of matching deer antlers also made a great branch-like support for orchids in another. The harsh, sun-bleached antique deer skulls were softened with ranunculus, spray roses and succulents.

Photographer Information

Our amazingly edgy photographer, Mike Olbinski, was specifically chosen because of his astute talent for natural light photography as well as his uncanny ability to portray an emotional story through his imagery. He’s known world-wide as the “guy who captured the haboob” and has made an amazing career shooting Arizona in its harshest weather while also capturing her sunsets and roadsides. I love his work and knew he’d be a great fit for this shoot. He also shoots many weddings and his edgy style comes through for unique shots of unique couples.

the way i see it, i like to write photos and have always found it easier to write photos than to write books. i’ve tried writing whole books, but they never come out like i want them to. i finally found that one of the best places to write a photo is in a library where imagination, flirtations, and romance have already seeped into the heavy wood over the years. a library has endless hiding spots and there’s always a hint of mystery lingering around. i love these two: they present a certain mischievous adventure that makes paper and picture come alive, where paper takes all sorts of shapes from flowers to airplanes. i feel that my excitement for writing their photos is only just beginning – i can’t even begin to imagine how spectacular their fall wedding will be. picturesque, i’m sure. paperesque? definitely.

Wedding Planning by Katherine Courtney - and 5 minutes with me!

I recently met up with two absolutely fabulous girls with a beautiful creative vision. Katherine and Courtney are the duo behind Katherine Courtney Wedding Planning & Coordination. I’m very excited at the prospect of working with them in the future on both some styled shoots which we are planning, and of course on some weddings this year.

They write a wonderful blog as well as being very active on Pinterest with their ideas. They recently did a short piece on me talking about my inspiration and way I view the wedding photography industry. You can read the piece here. I’m looking forward to writing for me soon about the importance of wedding planning.

The transcript for the interview is below:

KC: How long have you worked within the industry?

HA: I have worked in the photography industry for 5 years having retrained after 10 years of working in events and marketing. I used to book photographers for my events and it was always a career I held in high esteem – at the time I never dreamed I could actually become a photographer myself. However, a combination of luck, opportunity and a lot of hard work have turned that dream into a reality and I’ve never looked back.

KC: What inspires your work?

HA: My inspiration comes from a lifetime of travel and experiences and I gain a lot of ideas for poses and techniques from fashion magazines, portrait and fine art photographers and film. My first degree was in History of Art and so I have always had a love of imagery. When working with wedding clients I am often led by them as people and the way in which they love. I take my creative cues from their relationship and how they like to express it.

KC: What three “tools-of-the-trade” are a must have?

HA: My 5d Mk 3 cameras, my Shootsac (essential for carrying spare lenses, batteries and cards when on the move at a wedding) and huge amounts of energy!

KC: Any advice for our brides?

HA: Always meet with your wedding photographer. Your photographer will be close by your side for much of the day and it’s really important that you have a good personality fit. If you have the opportunity do a pre-wedding shoot then this is very useful. I offer this as part of my standard package as I think it’s so important to get used to being in front of the camera and to build a relationship with your photographer BEFORE the big day.

Don’t be afraid to be honest about you want – at the end of the day it’s your day so work with your photographer to ensure you get the type of photographs you want but do listen to their advice – they will have done hundreds of weddings and can be a great source of information about what works and what doesn’t and can guide you in planning a smooth and successful day.

KC: What trends do you forecast?

HA: Wedding photography has changed dramatically over the last 10 years from being very formal and formulaic to a more natural and documentary style. I love that wedding photography has developed into the creative and personal expression it is now and that is why I was attracted to working in the industry. There will always be trends in wedding photography but I’ve always believed in simplicity. I don’t want to use gimmicks in my photography or post production but to capture a scene in the most natural, beautiful way that will stand the test of time.

I am incredibly honored to present on of my BEST friends Jessica and her husband Matt Whelchel. This shoot is definitely more than just your average couples shoot. We incorporated an explosive travel theme to announce and celebrate a HUGE life choice this amazing couple has decided to take in July of this year. They’re moving to Japan! Jessica and I met performing in 2004 for a small theater group in Whittier, CA. Being some of the eldest cast members, we clicked right off the bat and became great friends. Jessica and I were roommates for nearly 2 years when she married the man of her dreams Matthew. The 3 of us have traveled the world, worshiped together, celebrated holidays, and experienced ridiculous amounts of laughter and tears. So, it was not even a fraction of a second that went by when Jessica asked me to shoot them for this HUGE announcement. These photos reflect a large part of who Matt and Jess are. Creative, expressive, loving (others and each other), funny, out of the box, stylish (DUH!), and most of all in love with God and Japan. Great Gatsby- The New Vintage

This past September we wanted to put together a fabulous styled shoot to submit to some national and local blogs and to create some beautiful images for everyone’s portfolio. The chosen theme was The Great Gatsby, and the title alone conjures imagery of the era. Our concern was that the Gatsby style had already been done, and done well. It became our hope and interest, that we could style it with a little more focus on the architecture and social conventions of the time, rather than yet another reason to photograph some pretty vintage things with a dreamy backdrop. The novel and it’s love story are tragically romantic, but the era is also strongly captured through the tale.

It all began with us at Bridal Beauty Associates bringing together a fabulous team, each a master of their respective profession, to create the beautiful images. Kira, lead hair and makeup artist contacted Marirosa, the photographer, and brainstormed locations and ideas. The Whittemore House was selected for its beauty and history, and the idea of a Great Gatsby theme was born. Fabienne of Wedding Muse, created the perfect table set up with every last detail to bring everything together. Together with Lora of Gateau Distinctive Cakes they turned an already beautiful room into a romantic and elegant backdrop in which to stage our models. Even our wonderful host, Burak of The Whittemore House went fully out of his way to accommodate our shoot idea, including helping us to park, and making us a superb lunch, revealing the stately mansion in the middle of Washington, DC to be a beautiful gem in every way.

The building itself has a history as did the characters in the novel. The flowers were of the time, delicate and old fashioned as opposed to the more extravagant stylings of today. We used the greens and golds that symbolize money throughout the novel, along with some of the forbidden trappings of the day…and old absinthe bottle, old French novels, cigars and a flask covered in lace. The cake artist used a roughly inspired top hat and pearls motif with beautiful detail, and the talented hair and makeup staff teamed up to create two very different looks for two very different models, yet both in keeping with the style of the time period. The looks were traditional in the respect that we focused on a bolder lip and finger waves, yet overall it was still contemporary enough to be seen on brides today. The dresses were modern, but combined with the pearl and feather accents, still captured the vintage feel.

Our photographer was detail oriented in every way, capturing the architecture, mood and ambiance that was found in the novel, a story of three people unable to completely live the lives that they desired, yet finding some way to express their desires through the social outlets of the era. The greatest thing about the shoot, was that although most of us had not previously met, the shoot was flawless and professional from start to finish. We all worked together as a team to bring to life not only a representation of a period in time, but to create images that evoked the beauty and emotion of a roaring twenties wedding.

I am so excited to finally share this Indian Inspired Styled Shoot with you! A few months ago, I collaborated with great wedding professionals to pull this beautiful styled shoot together.

I’m so excited! And I just can’t hide it!

Gosh, 2013 is going to be a wonderful year for Beginnings! I can just feel it. I have so many things planned. Big things. Fun things. New and wonderful things. And more ideas for more great things keep popping in to my head every minute! I’m excited and all of my fans and clients should be as well!

(And I am just realizing that I use way too many exclamation marks…)

Not too long ago, I decided that I wanted photography to not only be a business for me, but also a creative outlet. I have always had this need for a creative release. Writing, knitting and crocheting, interior designing, photography. I really think photography is that perfect creative release for me. I want to be able to see an image in my head and make it happen in real life. To plan, stage, and execute a session so that it tells the story of the vision I have in mind. So, I’ve decided to focus on these inspired images in my head whenever they come about and do my best to bring them to life to share with the world.

Well, I have got a wealth of ideas and stories bouncing around in me just waiting to come out. I’m not going to divulge any details just yet as I am still fine-tuning the particulars, but I can tell you that I foresee some stunning photos coming from these projects.

The first is already in the works, in fact! My Pregnancy Timeline Project is just the first of many styled sessions and series I have planned. I figured it was a fun and easy one to start with, to get a feel for planning a styled session. And, because I wanted to jump right in to all of my ideas, it was a good one to start even though it is still winter. Actually, one of the projects I am planning is another timeline series to start the first week of May with something a bit different in mind. It will be very different from my current timeline project for sure.

Oh, you just wait until this spring and summer. This summer especially is going to be jam-packed with styled sessions, portfolio building, and some other new projects, so keep an eye out for casting-calls and model searches, not to mention some great deals and opportunities. I’m going to need some special mommies-to-be and precious little ones to make all this happen!

I will definitely share more details as the sessions draw nearer and as I get more details…
