X-Men

Marvel Comics

Victoria Hand als „his last Tether to Sanity“ beschrieben wird.

DARK REIGN: THE LIST

“Dark Reign: The List – Avengers” by Brian Bendis and Marko Djurdjevic

“Dark Reign: The List – Uncanny X-Men” by Matt Fraction and Alan Davis

“Dark Reign: The List – Secret Warriors” by Jonathan Hickman and Ed McGuiness

“Dark Reign: The List – Daredevil” by Andy Diggle and Billy Tan

“Dark Reign: The List – Wolverine” by Jason Aaron and Esad Ribic

“Dark Reign: The List – Hulk” by Greg Pak and Ben Oliver

“Dark Reign: The List – Amazing Spider-Man” by Dan Slott and Adam Kubert

…die zusammen „The List“ ergeben.

DARK REIGN: ARES

CUT TO

nighttime, same spot, high on opium, only time he ever took hard dope, and the lines came off starting into circles and instead finished with a little hook, like the little hook even in the lines of that strange comic strip, The Spirit, and this was the line of the future, completing the circle without having to go all the way every time, getting there by knowing the beginning of the trip

CUT TO

Beyond acid. They have made the trip now, closed the circle, all of them, and they either emerge as superheroes, closing the door behind them, and soaring through the hole in the sapling sky, or just lollygag in the loop – the loop of the lag – Almost clear! Presque vu! – many good heads have seen it – Paul telling the early Christians: hooking down wine for the Holy Spirit – sooner or later the Blood has got to flood into you for good – Zoroaster telling his followers: you can’t keep taking haoma water to see the flames of Vohu Mano – you’ve got to become the flames, man – And Dr. Strange and Sub Mariner and the Incredible Hulk and the Fantastic Four and the Human Torch prank about on the Rat walls of la casa grande like stroboscopic sledgehammer Cassady’s fons et origo ::::: and it is either make this thing permanent inside of you or forever just climb draggled up into the conning tower every time for one short glimpse of the horizon:::::”

This is about 20% higher then a typical Omnibus. I am quite curious to see how the pages have been restored and interested to learn more about that process. This is one Omnibus I won’t miss!

In September, 1939 a new voice hit the newsstands and changed the comic-book world forever: Marvel Comics #1, with its blazing Human Torch cover, had arrived! And this 64-page pulp package wasn’t your typical assortment of super-powered, straight-laced, do-gooders – this was something completely new. The amazing android creation of Dr. Phineas Horton, the Human Torch was neither man nor hero – he was a blazing force of nature that shocked and unsettled mankind. Prince Namor, the Sub-Mariner, the half-human/half-Atlantean, ventures from his undersea kingdom into the world of man – not with a mind set on peace, but towards vengeance! These two characters would form the foundation for the style of conflicted hero that defines Marvel to this day, and you’ll see them evolve across twelve full issues from their raw forms into the battling fire and water mega-hits of the Golden Age! Featuring an extensive essay on Marvel’s pulp magazine pre-history, publisher Martin Goodman, and the birth of Marvel Comics by noted historian Will Murray, and topped off with special bonus features including original artwork and items never seen since 1939, this collection forms the cornerstone of Marvel history essential for every comic book fan, collector and historian! Collects Marvel Comics #1, and Marvel Mystery Comics #2-12.

Fraction meint dazu folgendes:

“You’ve got to remember what we as readers know the world doesn’t, and what Norman did to the Avengers he’s now looking to do with the X-Men,” Fraction stated. “There is a profound public crisis and what Norman did worked, so he’s thinking why wouldn’t it work for the X-Men?”

Was sicher ist, ist dass Emma Frost das Team der Dark X-Men anführen wird.

Fans are already buzzing about the six-part “X-Men/Dark Avengers” crossover that Matt Fraction is writing, and they became even more excited after the reveal of the story’s first cover, “Uncanny X-Men” #513, featuring a new team of “Dark X-Men.” “This story is about three teams and the three people leading those teams; Norman Osborn, Scott Summers and Emma Frost,” Fraction confirmed.

When fans meet Emma Frost’s Dark X-Men, the team is fully formed and was handpicked by Norman Osborn — with the exception of one member who’s been placed on the team at Emma Frost’s insistence. Unlike Osborn’s Avengers, the majority of his X-Men are in the dark as to his current criminal agenda and believe him to be a reformed villain and hero of the Skrull invasion.

We took a day out to Whitby in North Yorkshire yesterday which is only about an hours drive from where I live in York. Many of you may know that Whitby is where much of Bram Stoker’s Dracula is set and much of the fabulously imposing structure of Whitby Abbey still remains. I think I will have to read the book again soon. Catwoman tells me that Whitby is supposed to be Goth Central, well apart from a couple of pre-teen girls with My Chemical Romance hoodies there was nothing even remotely close, maybe they just come out at night. By the way I know that MCR would not be considered goth, but really that is the closest thing I saw. But if the Daily Mail is to be believed, and I really don’t think it is, then these two kids were off to do some self harm and plan for suicide!

Whitby Abbey, it'll look good when it's finished won't it?

I did find a small independent music store though, as usual! I bought a copy of the supremely talented Julian Cope’s album ‘Black Sheep’ I got into Cope quite late really but I love his stuff now, especially his solo albums, I’m not so keen on the Teardrop Explodes. Incidentally did you know that the band got their name from issue 77 of Marvel Comics Daredevil from 1971 (which also featured Spiderman and Prince Namor)? Well they did and did you know that whilst I like Daredevil and Spidey the Silver Surfer is probably my favourite Marvel character? Well he is, but is followed in a very close second place by the Fantastic Four!

The page of the comic from which the Teardrop Explodes got their name

Whilst in Whitby we simply had to visit it’s most famous Fish and Chip restaurant, The Magpie and trust me it was well worth it! Click on the name to check it out. Speaking of fish, have any of you seen the new TV advert for Birds Eye Salmon Fish Fingers? I’m not sure if it is being shown outside the UK yet. Either way and just in case click here to see it. I think it is bloody hilarious and the best TV ad I’ve seen for ages.

I’ll cover just one birthday today 9th April. It’s the 29th birthday of Albert Hammond Jr off of the Strokes who has also produced a couple of solo albums in recent years too. He is the son of US singer songwriter Albert Hammond, I could make a joke here about his parents lacking creativity by giving him the same name as his Dad, but I won’t because that’s exactly what my parents did. no they didn’t name me Albert Hammond, he wasn’t my Dad ok, that’s just a “Big Stripey Lie” (you like the secret Kate reference Mickelodeon?). No my Dad, and therefore me too, were and are William Adamson, although no one ever calls me William anymore. Nowadays it’s Bill, Will, baldbloke or git. Anyway back to Mr Hammond Jr, I bought the Strokes’ first album ‘Is This It’ while I was on holiday in Canada in late August 2001. My copy contains the track “New York City Cops” which was removed from the US and some other territories releases after the terrible events of September 11th 2001. It was deemed disrespectful to the many public servants who risked and in many cases lost their lives on that day. I do understand that, but clearly it was written and recorded some time before those horrific murders so maybe now is a good time to reclaim it! Click here to see the band performing it live. Albert met Julian Casablancas, also off of the Strokes whilst at Boarding School in Switzerland. Albert’s dad had a massive hit in the early 70s with what I suppose would be termed one of my guilty pleasures these days, “It Never Rains In Southern California“. well maybe it does but surely it rains much, much less there than it does here in the UK.

Once again the Strokes fail to win at Giant Scrabble, spelling clearly wasn't their strong point!

It has been pointed out to me that Queen have not yet featured in my blog so far, well it’s nothing personal I do like them quite a lot. So here they are! On this day in 1973 Queen played a showcase gig for their new record label, EMI, at the Marquee Club in London. The late great (those l’s & g’s are getting very regular now, it must be all the Bran Flakes!) Freddie Mercury came up with the band’s name and claims he never even thought of it’s gay connotations, here is what he said about it; “I thought up the name Queen. It’s just a name, but it’s very regal obviously, and it sounds splendid, It’s a strong name, very universal and immediate. It had a lot of visual potential and was open to all sorts of interpretations. I was certainly aware of gay connotations, but that was just one facet of it.” For me Queen was more than just Freddie, it was a combination of him, Brian May, John Deacon and Roger Taylor. That is why I really don’t get stuff like the newish Paul Rodgers and Queen album. I think Paul Rodgers has one of the great rock voices but he’s not a part of Queen is he? I’m sure that some of you will disagree but that’s my opinion. Anyway let’s end this Queen piece on a fun note with another excellent Freddie quote. Queen and the Sex Pistols were recording in the same London studio complex in 1977 when Sid Vicious went into the wrong room and saw Freddie Mercury sitting at the piano alone. Sid allegedly said something like “Freddie Mercury, still bringing ballet to the masses are you?” Freddie’s excellent reply was allegedly something similar to “Oh yes Mr Ferocious dear, we are doing our best” Here are the mighty Queen with my favourite of all their songs “Seven Seas Of Rhye“

Freddie loved to lord it over all those who were shorter than he was, which was basically..........everybody!

And finally this day in 1991 saw the death of record producer Martin Hannett. He was born in Manchester and had produced many Manchester bands including; the Smiths, New Order, Joy Division, Happy Mondays and Magazine. He also worked with U2 and the Psychedelic Furs. He was credited as Martin zero for his first production job which was the “Spiral Scratch EP” by the Buzzcocks. He died of heart failure in 1991 after years of heavy drinking and drug addiction, which included heroin. Many people have a real misconception of the nature of addiction, myself included until recently. I have learned a lot from an Australian blog which now features on my BlogRoll, it’s called ‘The Australian Heroin Diaries‘ and you really should check it out. As far as Martin goes I had to finish with Joy Division’ fantastic “Love Will Tear Us Apart”

Martin was constantly being followed by two small UFOs that no one else could see

When I was over at Comic Book Resources earlier I spotted a story about Marvel releasing a set of variant covers to celebrate its 70th anniversary and I was blown away by how cool they look. Marcos Martin, who I only know from Batgirl: Year One a few years back, has been tapped for the job, and the four covers are dynamite.

Of course, Marvel was still called Timely Comics 70 years ago so the titles are based around their three most notable World War II characters, the Human Torch, the Submariner and Captain America. The covers have a great WWII proaganda feel about them. Bravo. I feel like buying some war stamps and picking a fight with a bunch of Nazis.

Really … JACK KIRBY vs GENE COLAN in some kind of legendary “silver agey” comic book artist smackdown … really … well not really. But it is an interesting thought, you have to admit. If you want to get directly to the controversy (or non-controversy if you actually apply any critical thought to it), you’ll just have to scroll down a little bit.

But first, a tiny bit of unnecessary and probably unwanted non-comics stuff…

I’M NOT TAKING MY GLOVES OR MUZZLE OFF … BUT …

If you know me in any small way, you can probably guess where I come down politically. This is not a political blog. This is also not a personal blog, a music blog or a journalistic blog. That said, don’t be surprised if I talk briefly about my life, my daughter, Jim Croce, The Kentucky Headhunters, The Dan Band, or my degree in Mass Communications from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse.

I don’t really see this as a left/right, blue/red issue, but an issue regarding journalistic integrity, but you be the judge.

That said, I thought that this was a piece of information worth passing along … doing my small piece of the effort. I don’t have any plans to bore you with this kind of polarizing material very often. So if you want to pitch in and help, click the picture at the right (it is a link) … and if you’ve come for a funny book fix instead … just scroll down and away you go.

FANATIC QUIZ QUESTION

We’ll start today’s post with a new quiz question that leads perfectly into the pressing issue of the day.

Cover art by Jack Kirby

Cover art by Gene Colan

Cover art by Brooks Hagen

Above are three comic book covers from different eras, other than the fact that they are all first issues, what else do they have in common? Sounds easy enough, right?

Notice the cover to Red Raven Comics. All the reference says that this is artwork by Jack “The King” Kirby. It certainly isn’t the Kirby style that we’re all the most familiar with, now is it?

JACK KIRBY vs GENE COLAN

It seems that my dear friend Tom Heintjes has taken issue with my suggestion that someone smarter than me could make a case for Gene Colan being the greatest comic book artist. This is what Mr. Heintjes wrote:

Tom Heintjes

“Come on, DWO–you can’t POSSIBLY be saying that Colan surpasses Kirby for output/versatility of genres/influence/sales/what have you got?“

Now this is where the trouble begins… I’m a competitive guy. I want nothing more than to pick a fight with the obviously misguided Mr. Heintjes. I want to prove him wrong beyond a shadow of a doubt. I want to embarrass him with a dazzling array of information, logic and emotional appeals that would cause a room of old women to erupt in thunderous applause.

People like a good fight. People line up and pay good money to see a fight. In my imagination, as I have Mr. Heintjes in an intellectual headlock, the readership/traffic/views/clicks for this modest, but fanatical little blog soar to the stratosphere as the virtual eyeballs buy all the popcorn and Goobers they can eat just to watch me punch Mr. Heintjes in his virtual nose.

Kirby's cover for FF#1. Perhaps the most "swiped" cover design EVER!

What possible strategy could I employ to prove my point? In what obvious and easy-to-prove-to-the-world ways is Gene Colan’s comic book art clearly better or his career greater than Jack Kirby’s?

Well, I find Gene Colan’s artwork prettier to look at. Ok … that’s one thing, but not very convincing as it is simply a matter of personal preference. What about total output? That would take a lot of research. What about influence? Lots of guys went to great lengths to make their artwork have the dynamics and flair of Kirby. Pretty hard to find any popular artists that appeared to be trying to make their art look like Gene Colan’s. That hardly proves my point.

What about versatility? Or sales? Or output? Gosh darn it … all that stuff would take an enormous amount of research that I don’t have the time or energy for … and god forbid … I might not be able to find all the information I need on the Wikipedia … or the whole internet.

I know. If I want to prove that Gene Colan is somehow greater than Jack Kirby all I have to do is … wait … let me read back what I just typed. Never mind.

Gene Colan's seldom-copied style

The truth is this. Both Tom Heintjes and I have enormous amounts of respect and love for both Jack Kirby and Gene Colan and their enormous contributions to the comic industry we all love … in very fanatical ways. I guess I’ll just have to find another way to build readership and punch Mr. Heintjes in his virtual e-nose.

2nd STRING HALL OF FAME NOMINEE

I’ll be rolling out the nominees in ROUND FOUR one by one. And this new round of nominees is going to be all-female. And in honor of today’s theme, I’m proud to present a character created by Jack Kirby.

Big Barda hangin' with BIRDS OF PREY

Big Barda (DC Hero)

Big Barda was a BBW (big, beautiful woman) before the term was popularized in magazines and television. Her first appearance was in Mister Miracle #4 and was part of the NEW GODS mythology that Jack Kirby created at DC Comics. Big Barda was created as a female companion to Scott Free alias Mr. Miracle. According to Mark Evanier, who worked as Kirby’s assistant for a time, the interplay between the two characters was patterned in part on Jack and Roz Kirby’s relationship. Born on Apokolips and raised by Granny Goodness, Barda was supposed to be one of the bad guys. Since falling in love with Mr. Miracle and becoming a hero, Barda has had a long association with the Justice League and a more recent one with Oracle and The Birds of Prey. Plus, how can you resist a girl who has this description from Wikipedia, “She wields a high tech weapon called a Mega-rod, which produces extremely powerful concussive bursts.” ’nuff said.

THE GENE COLAN PROJECT

Enjoy the dynamic bravery of the composition of this CAPTAIN AMERICA cover by Gene Colan. Most artists wouldn’t even try to make a cover like this work … and most of those that may try … would fail. That’s my version of the story.

- Will Harry Osborn be involved in Dark Reign since his father’s in charge? Brevoort: Yes, in April the American Son story in Amazing Spider-Man #595 to 599 will show that story. Slott: Check the Weekly Webbing interview with Wacker on Newsarama.

- Does the hair on Pepper’s armor do anything? Fraction: It’s not hair.

- How much is the Dark Reign related to the Bush Administration? Quesada: Dark Reign has been planned for quite awhile.

- In the last page of Secret Warriors, how much impact will that have on the Marvel Universe? Hickman: A big one.

- Will Thor ever appear in Dark Reign? Brevoort: Yes.

- Why doesn’t Doom put Norman in his place? Bendis: That would be Issue #4 of Dark Avengers. It’s a central issue of the first arc.

- How long is Dark Reign going to last? Can we take a break from events? Quesada: So you don’t want books where something happens? Pak: I think we should have Marvel Battle of the Bands. McCann: Dark Reign isn’t really an event; it’s what’s happening in the Marvel Universe. Quesada: Dark Reign leads to an interesting place in the Marvel Universe. I think you’ll see a pulling back at the end of Dark Reign, but you’ll understand at the end of it what we were trying to get to.

“When we produce books that aren’t part of an event, there’s a significant drop-off,” Quesada added. “You vote with your dollars…. We try to give you the stuff you want to read. When it’s not successful, we stop publishing.”

- What’s going on with Dormammu and the Hood? Bendis: New Avengers #51 through #55 is the search for the new Sorcerer Supreme now that it’s not Dr. Strange.

- A fan said he’s a huge fan of Captain Britain and the MI: 13. Cornell said: “New storyline: Dr. Doom on the Moon with Dracula. Dr. Doom’s not taking second fiddle to anyone in my series.”

- Are the Fantastic Four going to get messed up like everyone else in the universe? Brevoort: Dark Reign: Fantastic Four is all about how that plays out.

- What’s the thinking behind Emma’s placement on the Cabal, and Namor’s placement? Bendis: Namor will do anything he thinks is good for his kingdom. He’s the only one who knows the first Illuminati and the Dark Illuminati both exist. Fraction: The Uncanny Annual that just came out explains most of why Emma’s doing this. Emma’s doing what she believes is best for mutant-kind.

- Any plans for Omega Flight? Fraction: Keep reading Uncanny.

- Were there hints to what happened at the end of Secret Warriors? Hickman: There are tons of hints about where we’re going in the information in the back. There’s a long, complex story coming.

- Will there be a Pulse or Frontline for Dark Reign? Isn’t the press interested in this? Quesada: The prior events were so huge that we needed a ground level view in a special series. This is not that kind of thing so it’s not necessary to have a series from that point of view. Brevoort: You’ll see some of that in Amazing Spider-Man. Remender: And also in The Punisher.

- Is Nick Fury’s team a permanent thing or just to stop Norman Osborn? Hickman: Permanent, but it’s not going to be the only team in the book.

- Is Bullseye going to be killing lots of people? Bendis: Yes. Diggle: Dark Reign: Hawkeye is all about Norman trying to keep control of the guy. He’ll also be in the Dark Reign: Elektra series.

- Will Captain America tie into Dark Reign? Brevoort: You’ll see Avengers characters hanging out sometimes with Cap, but Ed Brubaker will be doing what he’s been doing.

- Is Magneto involved in Dark Reign? Fraction: No, but we’ll be checking in with him soon.

- What’s next for the Initiative? Will Gargoyle stay around? Gage: Gargoyle retired. The next story is Initiative Disassembled, and that’s what it is. Norman Osborn will be changing things in the Initiative in a big way. And the New Warriors are coming back.

- Will anyone switch sides during Dark Reign? Bendis: Characters are going to be pushed in different directions. So you’ll see what happens in all the Dark Reign books with all these heroes as they react to being pushed to the limit.

- Daken seems to have bone claws like Wolverine. Is he getting an adamantium skeleton? McCann: As of Issue #75, Wolverine becomes Dark Wolverine, so that’s where the answer will be.

- More Howard the Duck? Bendis: That character has shown up in six issues I’ve done, and I’ve never typed the words Howard the Duck.

- Has Norman Osborn given up the Spider-Man obsession? Almost everyone on the panel said: No!

- How long until we get into the Ebony Blade in Captain Britain and the MI: 13? Cornell: You’ll see the Black Knight get the Ebony Blade back in the next issue.

- Is Dark Reign influenced by Acts of Vengeance? Bendis: It’s not consciously linked to it. Brevoort: Acts of Vengeance collection this year.

- What’s up with Scarlet Witch? Slott: You’re going to find out what’s up with the Scarlet Witch by Issue #23.

- Is Steven Strange done? Bendis: No, you’ll be very happy because Steven gets a lot of face time, and we’ll take a tour of Marvel’s magical universe and see who’s worthy of being Sorcerer Supreme.

- Any interactions between the Thunderbolts and the Dark Avengers? Diggle: You’ll see interaction, but the public thinks the Thunderbolts don’t exist. The Avengers are there to take the spotlight.

- Will the lists and information in the back of Hickman’s comics going to continue in Fantastic Four? Hickman: Not really, because we’re going for something different in FF. I think you’ll like it though.

- Will we see Magneto’s opinion of Dark Reign soon? Fraction: Yes.

- Will we see a battle between Norman Osborn and Spider-Man? Brevoort (sarcastically): It’s absolutely out of the question.

- Will the Fantastic Four and Spider-Man story in April in Amazing Spider-Man affect Dark Reign? Slott: It will have major repercussions on the Marvel Universe.

- Do you worry you’re making things too gray? Quesada: No, at the end of the day, we’re just trying to tell good stories. Marvel characters have always been gray. There’s lot of that stuff.

- What does H.A.M.M.E.R. mean? Brevoort: Evil!
