This week I have been spending a lot of time on a Rails project where I have been focusing on account set up and custom subdomains. Since this is the first large project I have had a back-end focus I have been learning a lot. Here is some of the stuff I picked up this week.

• to fix uncommitted mess ups: git reset –hard HEAD and more undoing in git
• when viewing your git log via terminal to get out of it press shift-q
• to edit the host file on os x in terminal type sudo nano /etc/hosts, enter admin password, make modifications, and then ctrl-o to save and ctrl-x to exit.

Are there any benefits in using subdomains for the purpose of website search optimisation?

The answer is yes, but with a few reservations. A subdomain is a domain that is part of a larger domain. For example “serivces.seo.com” is a subdomain of the “seo.com”. At present, a maximum of two results can appear for a domain in the top 10. There is one exception that applies only to major portals such as Amazon, Ebay, About.com etc.

Ich hasse es. Entweder spinnen die Subdomains oder Bplaced. Irgendwie doch ein Grund mehr, zumindest einen Teil der Seite auf WordPress zu verlagern oder? Erstens, weil ich noch nicht alt genug bin und meine Eltern da nicht miteinbeziehen will und zweitens, weil ich keinen Grund sehe, für ein Hobby wie dieses Geld zu zahlen. Vielleicht höchstens irgendwann mal später…

Yes, we are again on our domain. After experiencing with Mocha Quest, we are quite comfortable with Random Toxic.com. However, there are a few things I don’t like about having a domain in WordPress.

First, they don’t allow subdomains. Then, the support and guide are so little. I noticed that although I have upgrade with USD15 for the domain, I still can’t change my theme(according to what I like because I can’t assess the FTP files). I still can’t use javascript, I can’t change the permalinks, blah blah blah.

Everything remains the same(limited usage) and just my domain changes. That’s a really lame hosting package. I am deeply upset with WordPress for not offering more than that. I would rather pay more(but not more than USD100 per year) for unlimited access.

Just for your info, I might change my hosting again(I can hear some grumbles from you) because I can’t live without Plugins and My Desired Themes.

As I outlined in my previous post on using Mono with FastCGI and Nginx, I’m hosting multiple ASP.Net applications with Mono. I already have Nginx configured to automatically direct subdomains of quickpm.net to the fastcgi-mono-server2 program using the fastcgi protocol.

I also have the fastcgi-mono-server2 configured using the following options
fastcgi-mono-server2 /applications=cmd.quickpm.net:/:/usr/local/nginx/html/cmd.quickpm.net,quickpm.net:/:/usr/local/nginx/html/quickpm.net /socket=tcp:127.0.0.1:9000

To quickply explain, the /applications argument is setting the cmd.quickpm.net domain to be served by the directory /usr/local/nginx/html/cmd.quickpm.net, and the other sites are set to their respective directories. The /socket option is telling fastcgi-mono-server2 to listen using the tcp protocol on port 9000 of the local host.

My only problem is that adding new subdomains is not automatic. If I want to add a new subdomain to my website I have to shutdown the mono fastcgi server and restart it with the subdomain added to the /applications argument, I could use a config file instead of the command line option but the point is I have to shut the server down and restart it to add subdomains. I want avoid doing this. What I want is an option like the following /applications=%1.quickpm.net:/:/usr/local/nginx/html/%1.quickpm.net so all subdomains are automatically handled.

The only way to do what I want, I believe, is to patch the mono xsp2 source code.

Defining Subdomains for Local Development

When you begin developing an application using subdomains, you need to move beyond using http://locahost:3000 as we need to be able to develop and test with subdomains. You can open up your /etc/hosts (within a Unix-based O/S) file and add the following.

127.0.0.1 localhost
127.0.0.1 lifestyle.dev
127.0.0.1 life2go.lifestyle.dev
127.0.0.1 vitalzeu.lifestyle.dev

This will let you make request to http://lifestyle.dev:3000 and http://life2go.lifestyle.dev:3000
It's important to remember that the subdomain must be specified here to work for local requests.
Unfortunately hosts file dont support wild cards(*).

Detecting Subdomains in Rails

In the application.rb file add this line to find subdomains
@subdomains = request.subdomains.first

The subdomains method isn't particularly smart, all it does is splitting on.and returning all but the
last two parts. So to get it to work in development then you will need to have the same number
of parts to your domain as you will in production.
So if you'd have life2go.lifestyle.com in production then you will need to have three part domain
names in development too, so something like life2go.lifestyle.dev mapped to your 127.0.0.1 address.

The request.subdomains.first will work both in production and development environments.

I have received recent word from Felweb:

The password core has been restored so you can now access your accounts. If you changed the password just try with both password and one of them will work. This applies also for emails, ftp accounts and databases.

So, at this time, your cPanel and FTP account access should be fully functional. Remember to connect to the new IP address, 69.162.119.146, if you are connecting via IP. As your subdomain is not working yet, you will need to use this. For cPanel:

For FTP, enter 69.162.119.146 as your hostname. Check to make sure your files are restored correctly on the server, and let me know if there are any problems.

If you have a domain, your website should be fully functional at this time.

Unfortunately, those with subdomains have a small wait. This is nothing to do with Felweb. It’s related to the way our DNS is set up. The current system does not allow changes to existing ‘zones’, meaning we can’t change the subdomains to point to the new server. For the past month, I’ve been working on a new system, which should come online within the next hour or so. (I spent 8 hours on it yesterday alone. DNS is such a pain…)

Your websites, however, will take up to 2 days to be fully visible through propagation, just as they would if you were to change where an individual domain pointed. If you want to view your website ASAP, I recommend setting up Open DNS, which is free. Basically, it tells your computer where to find the server, instead of waiting for your ISP to update their records.

After this period, your DNS will respond more reliably than before, meaning your website will be visible to more people, more often. I know many users have reported troubles in this area. In addition, you will have control over your own subdomains. This has been tested to fully work. See for yourself our test page:

While writing this post, I have just received a successful run of my DNS updating script, so we should be online again very very soon.

For work I need to setup one domain with multiple subdomains. The basic idea for the website is the same as Fog Bugz, in that it’s a web hosted app. And each customer has their own site e.g. johnny.quickpm.net would be johhny’s site.

For the technology side we use ASP.Net Web forums for the actual software, that is johnny.quickpm.net is running an instance of Asp.net WebForms on Mono.  But for the main site quickpm.net I want to run ASP.Net MVC since I like the MVC model and mono now (mostly) supports ASP.Net MVC in the current daily builds.

For the server software I’m using Nginx and the Mono FastCGI interface.  The important configuration bits are

Doing the above results in quickpm.net resolving to /usr/local/nginx/html/quickpm.net and cmd.quickpm.net resolving to /usr/local/nginx/html/cmd.quickpm.net also mono will serve the two directories as two separate ASP.Net Applications.

This code should be placed in the htaccess file in the root of your domain, i.e. domain.com/.htaccess

The IfModule wrapper ensures we only execute this code if the mod_rewrite module is enabled. See portability notes for more information.

Inside the IfModule, the first four lines are discussed and explained in Start Rewriting (part one). All we are doing is ensuring we are ready to rewrite.

We use two RewriteConds to first ensure we are not on the main domain and second capture the subdomain into a backreference. We are including an optional www. and this, is present will be in the %1 backreference, otherwise %1 will be empty. Our second set of parenthesis will match the subdomain, and so we capture that value into the backreference %2.

We then do the RewriteRule – how you do this is up to you. I have chosen here to turn a request for http://pie.domain.com/page.html into http://www.domain.com/pie/page.html.

The domain name RealEstateSearch.com is being sold. This is a high quality domain name. So, let’s look at what impact a domain name like that would have on ranking in Google. And, how you could leverage your investment.

According to the Google Adwords traffic estimator, consumers type the keywords in this domain name “real estate search” 9 million times each month into the Google search.

If you bought these keywords, this would result in roughly 240,000 consumer visits each month to your website nationally. Based on the cost of keywords, this would be quite an investment.

So with the right search engine optimization you can feel good that you made it to page one. Let me close by telling you what research into actual search records showed could happen if you made it to the top spot. You could experience as much as a 1,400% in traffic by ranking #1.

My counsel is to pick your domain name carefully so to match the keywords your targeted audience would most likely be using. And use more than one domain name to target your potential clients more specifically.
