A man who was stabbed to death tackling two muggers had been planning to return to India to be reunited with his wife and son for the first time in 10 years, it emerged today.

Sukhwinder Singh, a builder who lived in east London, was killed after chasing two men who had snatched a woman’s shoulder bag near Barking train station on Friday. The 31-year-old heard the woman scream and gave chase. Police believe he managed to grab one of the men in a nearby street before being stabbed. He died in hospital.

Yesterday his cousin Harwinder Singh, 27, said Sukhwinder had been saving up for a trip to India in June. “He had been so excited about it. He had not seen [his family] since he came here to earn money about 10 years ago, but … was planning to be with them in the summer,” he said.

Harwinder said Sukhwinder’s widow, Sandeep Kaur, and the couple’s 10-year-old son, Gurinder, had been distraught when they heard about the murder. The pair live in a rural farming community in Punjab. Harwinder said: “We phoned to tell them what had happened … his wife is in shock and she cannot speak. I think the doctor is coming to give her something because news of his death has made her very ill.”

Friends and fellow worshippers at the temple where Sukhwinder prayed paid tribute today to a brave and kind man. “I have known him for nine years and I know that he would have helped anyone, so it doesn’t surprise me that he was trying to help a lady who was in trouble,” said Nirmal Singh Gill, a local councillor. “He didn’t deserve this – nobody deserves it. We are all terribly saddened and shocked that this has happened.”

He said Sukhwinder had worked hard to support his family and had been a committed Sikh. “It was a hard life for him living here without them but he wanted to give them a chance of a good future. He was a very hard worker and always cheerful but I do know that he missed them.”

Gill said the entire extended family had depended on the money Sukhwinder sent home each month. “We are setting up a trust in the family name at the temple to support the family in any way we can. If they want to send his body back to India for cremation we will try to pay for that.”

Detectives are examining CCTV footage and want to trace two men, described as black and in their twenties. Detective Inspector John Sandlin said: “This is a tragic death of a man who was killed for attempting to stop others committing a crime. Our thoughts are with Sukhwinder’s family.”

But director shot a song Mahi Ve on her which features like an item number. This song was shot in Los Angeles and dance was composed by Hollywood technicians.

Unlike Malaika’s other songs this song has very slow dance movements. Belly dance and pole dance were specially designed for this song. Her  movements reminds one of Shakira’s dance in the song Hips Don,t Lie.

The look created for this song is not good. Art director Linda Spheeris is not gave good setting for this song compared with Ishq Samundar. Costumes which Malaika and dancers wore also not looking good.

Read that AR might open the Oscars with this rendition along with Sukhvinder Singh.

As Slumdog Millionaire hits the jackpot and the accolades pour in, my curiosity in the film keeps growing. Considering the fact that Christy Bharath, Amitabh Bachchan and Salman Rushdie thrashed the movie and on the other hand my aunt called up from the States to tell my mom that it’s a must watch film, I am anticipating this movie as much as I did ‘The Dark Knight’. Christy is gonna rip me apart for this, but I will take my chances. I downloaded the complete Slumdog soundtrack and that didn’t disappoint me. Loved every bit of it and M.I.As collaboration with A.R. Rahman is the highlight of the album.

The Mangalore connection (Freida Pinto as Latika) to the movie is another factor that draws me towards it. As a Mangalorean I am partial to all things related to my beloved town (even though it’s a city corporation now, I hate polluting the place with that word). Another Mangalorean had recently trailblazed his way to a Booker win recently but after reading his two books I realized I had only succeeded in burning a hole in my pocket. It’s wishful thinking that Slumdog will not go ‘The White Tiger’ way. Of late, Mangaloreans seem to be succeeding in places away from their home town. That gives me a lot of hope in my current position.

GOin back to the Slumdog soundtrack, The singers on the album do justice to the tracks, and after watching the trailers, to the pace of the film. From Rajasthani folksy numbers (Ringa Ringa with Ila Arun, that starts off sounding somewhat like the ‘Choli ke peeche’ number from Khalnayak) to the typical Bollywood strains with Sukhvinder Singh’s vocals, the whole album is a rush of colours and energy. While watching the best music category nominations during the Golden Globes, I realized that the rest of the soundtracks all felt the same – Cellos, violins, typical orchestral conductor material. Slumdog has this cheeky feel to it that teases, taunts and entices the listener to expect more.

A small note on the soundtrack – I first heard about M.I.A. from my Chennai friend a year back and then got to hear ‘Boyz’. The song was all South Indian energy from this British born rapper. From the beating drums to the use of indigenous instruments, the song reminded me of a Vijay starrer with the fanfare of Rajnikanth. The English lyrics gelled well with the whole experience and I was hooked. Now that M.I.A has gone mainstream I am sure we will be seeing and hopefully hearing a lot more of her in the media. The buzz has already begun and fans who had discovered her way before the current lot, are feeling a bit let down due to lack of acknowledgement of their discovery. Hope M.I.A. has some way to get around this and avoid alienating the underground audience that made her. All the best for that.
