I’d heard great things about Fake Bake The Face Self-Tanning Lotion ($22.95), so I picked up a tube. The small container only holds 2oz. of lotion, so you’re paying a lot for a little product.

I’m in the fall transition mode right now, where I’m mourning the passing of summer too much to apply self-tanner all over my body, since most of it is covered by clothing at this point. But my face is always exposed, and I am whiter than a sheet, so I needed something that would give me a quick tan.

This anti-aging lotion claims to fight off fine lines while giving the delicate skin on your face a healthy summer glow. The key ingredient is Matrixyl-3000, a wrinkle-blasting agent from France that causes no side effects. Fake Bake also infused the lotion with botanicals to make skin soft and smooth.

I applied this self-tanner for 4 nights in a row, and then again the next week for 3 nights in a row. It did nothing for my face. There were absolutely no signs of a tan at all. I then tried it in the morning, thinking the color would develop during the day, for 3 days…nothing. This stuff didn’t even perform its primary duty, which is to make me tan. Forget the anti-aging gimmick; I’ve got creams and lotions dedicated to doing specifically that. I don’t need it in a self-tanner. All I want from a self-tanner is a tan, and this did not deliver. My only hope is that I got a bad bottle, or that this just isn’t working for me, for some reason. I hope the hype wasn’t created without any merit, because that would just result in wasted money.

A few years ago, Bobbi Brown released in her summer collection the Sandwash Eye Palette, a small compact with 10 shades of shimmer eyeshadow nestled side by side in a brick. I gave Booty Butter a trial run on a hot day that was to be spent lounging poolside. To give you an idea of the effect it had on me, I’m pale and blond; I literally do not tan. This is unheard of for me, especially after such a short time spent in the sun.

Here’s the science-y lowdown on why the Booty is good for your skin:

Don’t get me wrong, my CHI flatiron is one of my most beloved possessions. However, every time I used it, I noticed that I had tiny flyaways sticking out from the crown of my head, almost like a faint halo. Although I’ve been covering the new fall cosmetics collections, I am going to milk summer beauty tips for all they’re worth. Summer is the rare time of year when we are encouraged to experiment with our looks and have fun with our makeup. The whole beauty vibe is more laidback, more easygoing, which lends itself to more acceptance. If you walked into a party donning bronzed skin and a casual fishtail braid in the winter, people might look at you perplexed, but in summer, bring it on!

One of the most fun, classic summer looks is the mermaid eye. This ocean-inspired look recreates the beautiful shades of the sea, and reminds you of waves, sand and warm, sunny weather. The best part is, it’s really easy to pull off. An added bonus: if you’ve mastered the smoky eye, this is 10 times easier! After the jump, a step-by-step tutorial on how you can score these gorgeous summer peepers.

You’ll want to work with a palette of pale greens and seablues. For shadow, pick any two shades of pale green and sea blue. For the sake of this tutorial, I’ll use Too Faced Jealous? and Neptune. You’ll also need a pale shimmery white shadow.

There are 2 ways to start building this look. If you like a little definition around your eyes, lightly line lashline and bottom lashes with a turquoise liner. I like Make Up Forever’s Aqua Eyes waterproof liner in Turquoise 7L. If you prefer less definition, skip this step entirely.

1. Grab your white highlighting shade and sweep an arc just underneath each browbone. Using an eyeshadow brush, blend down toward the crease, and make sure it’s blended up into the eyebrow.

2. Next, gently swipe your blue shade (Neptune, in this case) over the entire lid using the same shadow brush.

3. You’ll need an angled brush for the next step. Grab your seagreen shadow (Jealous?) and, starting at the center of the lid along the lashline, draw a line extending just past the corner of your eye, and give it a subtle wing tilting upward. Now take your shadow brush (tapping off any excess of leftover blue shadow) and create a sideways V from the green line you just drew, pressing shadow into the crease and extending up toward the browbone, blending as you go. The goal is to have the center of the lid remain blue.

4. To finish, pick the color you prefer and, using the angled brush again, line the entire eye just below the bottom lashes. This creates a shimmery look that mimics light reflecting on water.

I had been looking for a lightweight moisturizing lotion for summer, and while I was in the store buying room freshener, I stumbled across a beautiful blue bottle with an apothecary-style pump. Then I saw the word “coconut” on the tea-stained-esque label. I immediately dabbed a squirt onto my hands, and was instantly transported to the islands (ok, not really, but close enough).

Bath & Body Works Ile de Tahiti Inu Coconut Vanille lotion ($14) is nothing short of intoxicating. The smell alone is enough to make me keep buying it. It’s coconutty, islandy, and tropical…like a tiny piece of the beach in your very own bottle. It’s truly a lovely scent.

I hate greasy, heavy lotions, so I was pleased to find that this lightweight lotion is non-greasy, but supermoisturizing. Carefree and colorful epitomize summer style. So as we fight to keep cool and look cool doing it, here are a few suggestions to help you handle the rising heat index and retain your style quotient. It’s OK for them to see you sweat, if you look good doing it.

1. Go natural, or at least fake it. If your hair is naturally curly, experiment with hair products that allow you to get away from the flat iron and blow dryer. You’ll be surprised at what the right cut and the right curl serum can do. If you don’t have natural curls, you can experiment with French braiding your hair at night and unraveling it in the morning for something soft and easy.

Curls are a naturally youthful look that can take a few years off your face, especially if you combine it with a few strategic highlights that can last you most of the summer. Braids are another option, but you don’t have to go all out. Try styling your hair loose with just one small braid down the side or across the top of the head like a headband. Both are a nice touch for semi-casual daytime and chic nighttime wear.

2. Adopt a bold-colored pair of shoes and try them on with everything. That doesn’t mean you have to wear them every day, but you have to stop instinctively reaching for same boring black or neutral pair of shoes to go with everything. You’d be surprised how some red shoes can add pizzazz to everything from blacks to peach ensembles. Mix colors. No matter what color you’re wearing you can probably add shiny red, green or yellow shoes for an unexpected pop of color.

3. Summer lip, lids and tips. Play up your eyes, lips and nails with some of the vibrant colors summer has to offer. Highlight your eyes or your lips, but not both unless you have expert status. You don’t have to go with a lip color that enters the room two steps ahead of the rest of your face, but try pumping up the shade you normally wear by going with something two shades darker or brighter in the same family. If the color scares you, go with something matte, not super glossy. Coral shades can be universally flattering. For eyes, think greens and golds for a switch. And typically, your lips and your fingernail polish should not clash. If you paint your hands and toes, they should be the same color, unless your hands have clear polish or a French manicure.

4. Commit to a beauty regimen. If you have tons of lotions and potions that you use sporadically, now’s the time to make a commitment to applying them as directed morning and night. Otherwise, you are wasting money. Find one slate of products and use them religiously for the summer and see how your skin reacts. Right now, we’re in love with the Aveda Enbrightenment skin care system, which improves the surface of the skin and diminishes the appearance of dark spots. Just note that inconsistency is often worse than no regimen at all. The heat, humidity and damaging sun rays put your skin at risk for clogging, breakouts and hyperpigmentation. 5. Jackets need not be deferred. We often hang up the jackets and long sleeves for the summer because they are hard to keep fresh. Because we’re more prone to wearing something sleeveless underneath a jacket, sweat happens. So the easier-to-care-for cardigans tend to crop up a little more. But a jacket can be a great way to boost a simple summer frock into office attire. A jacket or long sleeves can also validate a tailored Bermuda short for workday wear. 6. Find your signature item. Invest in a quality accessory piece. It can be a watch that you plan to wear every day or a simple, sexy pair of gold hoop earrings. Go out and buy something worthwhile and wear the heck out of it. Consider the price per wear cost instead of the overall cost. And, no, it doesn’t have to be expensive, but it should be distinctive and versatile. Precious metals are a safe bet, but something tribal can also be versatile. From American Indian turquoise pieces to African bead bracelets, the looks can add personality to neutrals, blacks or jeans.

7. Upgrade your flip-flops. There’s no excuse to walk around clip-clopping in something that looks like you just stepped out of a communal shower at the gym. ‘Nuf said.

8. Flowers, bows and patterns. Now’s the time to shake out of the ho-hum solids and spice it up with a printed dress, flirty ruffled shirt or sweeping skirt. Add a little bohemian to your normal attire; it’s bound to affect your mood. Even if you’re not a print-kinda-girl, a flower pin in your hair, on your shirt or a headband can also lend an element of fun to your day-to-day wardrobe. Emma E. 9. Let blemishes be. If you are perpetually acne-free, we hate you, move on. If you are prone to breakouts, then just expect that those pesky blemishes will be worse in the summer. Do your diligence of applying drying potions and wait. Some products will take the red out or shorten the duration when used consistently, but the best thing you can do is keep your hands off. If you notice that your bras aren’t as stretchy as they used to be, that’s a problem. Too comfy can also be a problem. Your bra should feel fairly invisible, but you should not feel jiggly (yes, that’s a technical term). Ultimately, you want comfort and support, but above all you want support. You can probably also benefit from some new panties. Sheer fabrics and lighter, seamless items can be nicer looking underneath lightweight warm weather items.

We are approaching a holiday weekend in America, and July is the month where many people taking their annual summer vacation. Naturally, sun, sand and sea are on my mind.

Although it is one of the most relaxing and fun places to be, the beach can take its toll on your skin, hair and body. After the jump, my essential beauty tips for fun-filled beach days.

1. Protect your skin
Be smart about suncare. Avoid damaging skin by slathering on a sunscreen lotion in SPF15 or higher. Sunscreen is a must at the beach, and reapplying every two hours is necessary. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen that shields both UVA and UVB rays. One full-body application should be approximately the size of a shotglass.
If you do happen to get burned, take action immediately. Ease the pain with 2 ibuprofen, and apply a compress (a washcloth will work) soaked in cold skim milk to burned skin. This will help take the sting out of the burn. Aloe-based drugstore remedies like Banana Boat Soothing After-Sun Gel ($5) also help skin heal.

2. Shield your hair
Do the same for your hair as you do for your skin. The sun can potentially wreak havoc on your tresses by drying them out (which could lead to breakage and split ends), fading color, and turning blonds brassy. Use a UV protectant spray to prevent hair damage. Some to try are:

3. Use special care when hitting the pool
If you’re going for a dip, prepare. Chlorine can fade color, or worse, turn blonds a nasty shade of green, so be sure to rinse with cold tapwater before entering the pool; this acts as a barrier against chlorine. Follow your swim with a clarifying shampoo like UltraSwim (approx. $5.50) to remove chlorine residue and preserve color.

4. Give your hair a break
Vacation is a great excuse to give up hot styling tools. Let hair air dry and do its own thing. Give your hair the same relaxation you seek on vacation. Check out my tips on scoring flawless wavy beach hair.

5. Make hair removal easy
For the body:

• Get extra smooth skin with Schick’s new Quattro TrimStyle razor and waterproof bikini trimmer ($12). The razor provides extra comfort with 4 wire-wrapped blades and a conditioning strip, and the trimmer is easy to use. This is stress-free hair removal at its best.

• Be sure to shave at least 24 hours before going in the ocean; saltwater can irritate freshly-shaved skin.
• Always leave bikini and brow waxing to professionals. Too many things can go wrong when doing it yourself.

For the face:
Take the guesswork out of removing unwanted facial hair with GiGi Hair Removal Strips for the Face ($8). These plastic strips have wax already applied — just press and pull for a fuzz-free face.

6. Drink plenty of water
Keeping your body hydrated is great for your skin and health, and will help you get through a long day at the beach. Be sure to drink up before you feel thirsty to avoid dehydration. Avoid alcohol while out in the sun

I’ve found my new secret weapon: Inecto Pure Coconut Oil Deeply Nourishing Leave-In Conditioner. Wandering the aisles of Ulta on a recent rainy day, I was searching for self-tanner when I came across the very last bottle of this lovely spray. Lured by anything coconut, I popped off the cap and inhaled; my nostrils were greeted by the scent of real coconut. Anyone who’s fanatical about coconut knows that often, when a product claims to be coconut-scented, it actually smells nothing like the real thing. Hooked on the fragrance alone, I snapped up the bottle ($7.99US).

I had never heard of this spray before, but after a little researching, I found out that the manufacturer is based in the UK, and that they offer a full line of haircare products, and also a full line of body products. Here’s to hoping that Ulta carries more of this company’s items.

After my next shampoo, I sprayed on the leave-in conditioner liberally, forgetting that I should restrain myself since it could weigh hair down. Not only did my hair smell deliciously summery, but it also drank up the much-needed moisture (I highlight my hair, so it’s often in need of a moisture boost) without getting weighed down. The end result: soft, shiny hair that smelled like the beach. I’m officially hooked.

Summer beauty is all about protection, protection, protection! Yes the summer calls for sexy tans, colorful outfits, and gorgeous sunglasses, but we tend to forget how harsh it can be on our skin and hair.  The daily ritual you must not neglect (repeat, must not) is wash, tone, moisturize, and protect. The sun’s UV rays and pollution, dust & sand that we face every day (esp. here is Egypt) can block pores, dehydrate skin, and accelerate wrinkle development (and who wants that?). Believable bronze in an affordable bottle!

With the economy hitting rock bottom, it’s not easy for a girl to keep up with her beauty routine. In light of the current cash-crunching trend, I’m starting Recession Beauty, a series focusing on superior beauty products that can be found at your local drugstore. The first in this series is L’Oreal’s Sublime Bronze Self-Tanning Gelee.

Everybody likes to be tan. But we know how bad tanning is for your skin and overall health, so you know the drill: stay away from those tanning beds and wear sunscreen daily with a minimum of SPF15. Given the need to conserve funds, professional airbrushing or spray tanning may not be in our budgets these days. So it’s time to turn to at-home self-tanners that will leave you golden — not orange.

L’Oreal’s Sublime Bronze product line contains some of the best self-tanners out there, across all price ranges. For those who are looking for a deeper, quicker bronze (as opposed to a gradual tan, for which I’d recommend Jergens Natural Glow), Sublime Bronze Gelee ($9US) is your best bet.

I hate gel-like, goopy consistencies; this product is more like a lightweight moisturizing serum that quickly absorbs into skin and doesn’t make you sticky. The formula is easily blendable and therefore, virtually streak-free. The smell is not offensive–it really doesn’t smell like anything–and it gives skin a pretty, golden, believable tan. Once you’ve acheived the desired deepness of your tan, you can go a few days before it starts to fade; it seems to last longer than other self-tanners on the market.

Sublime Bronze Dual Action Instant Bronzer & Self Tanner

While I don’t recommend this particular version for the face (hello, breakouts), I do like Sublime Bronze Dual Action Instant Bronzer & Self-Tanner (approx. $9US). The double-chambered bottle dispenses self-tanner and tinted bronzer simultaneously, so you get an instant golden glow while your tan develops. Slather this on, and there’s no need to apply bronzer during your makeup routine.
Tip: Wet a cotton swab and, before the lotion sets, lightly run over brows and along hairline to avoid darkening brows and creating dark patches on skin.

Bottom line: I’ve tried a lot of self-tanners out there, both expensive and drugstore brands, and this product line is the best I’ve come across. You can’t go wrong with any of the formulas, and they offer a good variety of choices based on your faux glow preferences. At approximately $9 a pop, these self-tanners will give you a sun-kissed radiance without breaking the bank.

Nothing looks hotter on the beach (besides a teeny bikini) than a set of bright nails and toes. Score a scorching summer look with these manicure and pedicure-worthy pink hues. Get ready to dig your toes in the sand!

1. Chanel Organdy ($25US)
Quite possibly my favorite shade of nailpolish ever, this happy bubblegum pink makes nails pop. It looks incredible with a tan, but beautifully complements all skin tones. A surefire shade for any season. Just looking at the bottle will make you smile.

2. Essie Punchy Pink ($6US)
From Essie’s new “Neon” summer collection comes Punchy Pink, which is seriously a shock to the eyes. It’s a true neon bright pink that’s lighthearted and fun, a throwback to the ’80s. Perfect for conveying a carefree summer attitude.

3. OPI Strawberry Margarita ($8US)
Make this pink with peachy-gold undertones your go-to casual color during warm months. It looks great for a night out, but is also office-appropriate. Be sure to check out OPI’s other bright shades, like That’s Hot! Pink and La Paz-itively Hot.

4. Essie Coral Reef ($6US)
This sexy coral color is optimal for pedicures. Your toes will look gorgeous walking along the coast or dipping into the sea (or a backyard inflatable pool). Metallic sandals will really play up the brightness of this juicy hue.

To cop Blake’s carefree waves, apply Bumble & bumble Straight serum to damp hair, followed by all-over spritzes of a heat protectant like V05 Miracle Mist Heat Defense Conditioning Spray. Blowdry with a round brush (the longer your hair, the larger the barrel should be). Finish by wrapping ends around a 1-inch curling iron and set with Garnier Fructis Style Sleek & Shine Anti-Humidity Hairspray.
