According to legend, Puru Maharshi did meditation at the hill, where the temple of Shiva now stands

According to legend, Puru Maharshi did meditation at the hill, where the temple of Shiva now stands. It was a dense forest in those days; hence its name Puruvanam, which became peruvanam. The rishi brought the image of Shiva, the Lingam, a half cylinder, to be installed on top of the hill. Afterwards, the upper half of the hill, leaving the small area where the Lingam was placed, was razed down to its present size, making a vast plane, with the central high ground standing tall (MADATHILAPPAN) which is protected by massive walls on all sides, with twin temples of Eratteppan and Madathilappan, the latter standing tall, with a number of granite steps leading to the sanctum, from where, you get a sky view of the surrounding landscape. I am never tired of watching it, from childhood days, as my mother’s home was near the southern Gopuram (gate).

There were several venerable, old trees in the compound, including peepal tree and one perillamaram (meaning- tree without name, as it was a stranger there), all looking very old and about to die. New trees have replaced them.

The big koothampalam, where chakyar koothu was a regular ritual in those days, is rare in the other temples.

The koothu is a sort of mono act and Ramayanam is the theme. The Chakyar will make fun of any body among the audience, however high his status!

Once, the chakyar came very near to the man, a VIP who had just entered the hall, stood there for a few seconds, and commented: a real monkey, only the tail is missing!

One is supposed to suffer and grin, never retort.

Every year, for one month or so, there is thevaruseva, when there will be feasting, both times in the day, only for Brahmins. The dining hall is very long, some four feet in height, cut into three segments to allow devotees to pass through. As children we had difficulty in jumping up on to the dining place.

Throughout the year, there is simple food served to brahmins which we avoided as something below our status. Tamil Brahmins made use of this facility. My maternal grandfather’s brother lived at the western gopuram, eating the free food.

The circular sanctum of Eratteppan ( there is one big lingam and one small lingam by its side, hence this name) is very spacious, with a circular covered veranda, allowing the poojary to go from Shiva in the west to Parvathy in the back of the sanctum. In Keralam, Shiva is alone; in rare cases, where she is allowed inside, she is at the back of the temple.

The eastern entrance, where the gopuram was destroyed by the soldiers of Tippu Sultan, leads to the broad sloping arena, where seven elephants can stand side by side, during pooram festival. Farther down is the spacious temple pond. All the villagers take bath in this waterhole, with steps to climb down and a pucca shed on one side, where the poojary takes bath before entering the temple. The pond will not dry up even in summer, in rainy season it will be full.

Mekavil Bhagavathy is near the western gopuram. Oorakath Ammathiruvady, Thiruvullakavu Sasthavu, and several other temples are in the vicinity.

The location of the temple is twelve KM from Trichur, on the road to Triprayar temple of Lord Ram.

We looked at each other and then we looked at the screen, knowing that we wanted to document that moment. In those summer days, we lived in the naivete of lazy living, fearful of hard times to come, ignoring what was looming, absorbing as much as we could while we were there.
I sat by the foot of the bed and stared out into space. You took a nap. I rummaged through the things on your nightstand. You went downstairs for a cup of water. You popped in a DVD so I wouldn’t be bored waiting while you took a quick shower. All the while, I imagined Christmases with you, visiting each other on lunch breaks, summer afternoons like the ones we had so many of, walking down cold streets with my hand in your coat pocket (because men’s coats have larger pockets) to keep it warm, fussing over dinner, wondering if the future would actually look the way I’d hope.
I’d wake up from my daydream and reveal these thoughts, to which you’d tell me to stop thinking so much about the future, because what’s important is the here and now. I’d try to argue and tell you that I’m not freaking out about the future, rather, I’m sitting and thinking of what could be.
The future wasn’t relevant to you.

We were nestled on your bed, almost like two puzzle pieces fitting perfectly together.
The future wasn’t relevant to me either.

Swimming Pools are always big hits for Summer Sales

Spring and summer are the most popular months to sell a home and First National Real Estate Nerang has some advice on how to make your home the hot item this summer.

Homebuyers thoughts will naturally turn to patios, outdoor entertaining areas, landscaping, air conditioning and pools during the warmer months.

First impressions are critical and nothing is more off-putting to a buyer than entering a stuffy, hot house on a 30-degree day, which is why it’s important to make your home summer-friendly.

With sunny days and gorgeous blue skies, everything is on display. Flowers will be in full bloom, trees will be fully leaved and yards should be kept as tidy as possible.

Walking through the front door, homeowners should assess the first impressions created and position furniture so that rooms have an ‘open’ feel. Place fresh flowers in vases and pictures on the wall to give the property extra vibrancy.

Remove any clutter, and while family photos are great, limit them to no more than three.

Be sure to have the kitchen and bathroom spotless and any used towels replaced with clean ones.

Most importantly, ensure any items requiring maintenance have been taken care of such as door handles, torn fly screens, broken window latches, light switches, light shades, leaking taps, doors opening and closing properly and clean carpets.

If you have air conditioning, make sure it is in good working order and put it on when you are expecting potential buyers to be coming through. If you don’t have air conditioning, make sure you open as many windows as you can to let in the fresh breeze and keep windows clean.

The key area of a property during summer is the back yard, where buyers will envisage an area for the kids and a space to entertain.

Australian’s love their barbecues in summer and can’t go past a good functioning back yard so make sure the barbecue is clean and looks to be in good condition, ensure the lawn is always mowed and presentable, and the landscaping is tidy with beautiful healthy plants that have been well-watered in the days leading up to any inspections.

Make sure your outdoor living areas are clean, tidy and inviting

On the day of the inspection, give plants a light spray of water for a clean crisp look if water restrictions are not in force in your area.

Home owners should consider hiring or borrowing some plants, especially leading up to the front door.

For those with a pool or spa, be sure to keep them sparkling clean and leaf-free from crystal clear water to clean tiles at the top and bottom of the pool. Make sure any pool equipment is neatly stored away.

Don’t forget the fence, gate, paths and decks. These should be thoroughly cleaned of dirt and any cobwebs and free of peeling paint.

Other tips for selling a property in the summer are:

Schedule inspections for a time during the day when rooms are bright and have maximum sunlight shining in, but preferably not the hottest part of the day.

When having an open house, limit the number of people in the property at any one time. Too many people may make it appear smaller than it really is and reduce the viewer’s potential to see the possibilities of the property.

Keep pets out of the property during inspections and music at a minimum.

Get rid of unsightly garden rubbish which detracts from the appeal of your garden. This goes for the garage, old sheds and any outbuildings.

Ontario’s tourism and resort destination areas are predicting a potentially outstanding fall s

Ontario’s tourism and resort destination areas are predicting a potentially outstanding fall season. Over the last few years, Ontario tourist operators have witnessed a steady growth in business over the fall season due to many factors including the weather. Weather patterns are slowly changing with the warm summer temperatures extending well into September and October, making the fall months much more desirable to Ontario vacationers. This autumn will be no exception. Additionally, Environment Canada is predicting a warm and dry fall for Ontario this year which is welcome news to Ontario resort owners who are nearing the end of a busy summer season that has been a little cooler than predicted and unusually wet.

The good news about Ontario’s rain-soaked summer is that it creates conditions that are ideal for producing the most brilliant coloured fall foliage. Weather conditions are always a determining factor in just how colourful the leaves will be each fall. Often, summers that are unusually hot and dry put trees under a great deal of stress, resulting in leaves in the autumn that are dull and drop to the ground prematurely. This year, the trees have not been put under any stress whatsoever as the summer has been both extremely wet and a little cooler than normal. The result should be a breath-taking display of fall foliage province-wide that should extend into the entire fall season.

Ontario is already well known for its spectacular fall colours which naturally draws tourists. However, the changing leaves coupled with the province’s abundance of activities such as fall fairs, special fall festivals, and events in many charming tourist destination areas, makes Ontario a sought after vacation destination. Additionally, many resorts offer a wide array of attractive and reasonably priced fall colour getaway packages for people who want to take advantage of everything this special time of year has to offer.

Many resort owners believe that stunning displays of brilliant colour are not the only reason tourists choose to vacation in Ontario during the fall months. Many people enjoy a vacation in the fall because it is less crowded than during the peak summer months. In addition, reduced rates in the off-season also provide an added incentive to plan a fall getaway. As well, the high price of gas will continue to discourage people from traveling far from home. Since many resorts are within a short drive of the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), an Ontario resort vacation this fall is not only enjoyable but economical too.

Adapted from a traditional Indian recipe.

The dhaba originated as a ramshackle, road-side restaurant, where long-distance truckers stopped for food. The dhaba is a family-owned, bare-bones structure that serves fresh home-cooked meals, which are served under an open sky on rickety, tables and benches. While the dhabas originated to serve truck drivers, the food is so delicious that people seek them out just to have a good and inexpensive meal. Dhaba-style food has now been incorporated into restaurants and high-end Indian cuisine.

Serves 4.

Ingredients:

1/4 cup Whole Urad (Whole Black Gram)
1/8 cup Channa (Split Chickpeas or Split Bengal Gram)
1/8 cup Rajma (Red Kidney Beans)
1 cup chopped Onions
