Mount Everest is the highest mountain on Earth as measured by the height of its summit above sea lev

Mount Everest is the highest mountain on Earth as measured by the height of its summit above sea level. The mountain, which is part of the Himalaya range in Asia is located on the border between Nepal and Tibet, China. There had been 3,050 ascents to the summit by 2,062 individuals.

Climbers range from experienced mountaineers to relative novices who count on their paid guides to get them to the top. This means climbers are a significant source of tourist revenue for Nepal.

There are great trekking tours available which is available to anyone who can walk for a few hours per day. These tours start in Nepal in Kathmandu and are very popular.

Mt Everest has an undeniable ability to seduce Explorers, Travellers and Climbers alike. With its breathtaking views and fascinating Sherpa people there is something for everyone to guarantee the experience of a lifetime.

Mt. Everest, so called after the first person to record its height, Sir George Everest, translates in Nepalese and Tibetan as Goddess in the Sky and Mother Goddess of the Universe, demonstrating the immense respect and reverence that the locals have for this awesome mountain. It is 29,029 feet high but it rises a few centimetres each year due to the huge geological forces acting on it.

The weather you will experience on Everest is extreme and rather unpredictable so it is best to be prepared for all eventualities. Spring is the high season for trekking, but warmer weather can mean there is a larger cloud cover, which obscures many of the fantastic views that are part of this once in a lifetime trek. For those willing to brave the colder temperatures of autumn and winter this is not such a problem.

A large problem on Everest is that as you reach higher altitudes the oxygen content of the air dramatically decreases. At 20,000 feet there is only half as much oxygen in the air as you are used to and by the summit oxygen is reduced to only a one third.

There are two times of year when conditions are most favourable for a trek to Everest Base Camp, either in the pre-monsoon springtime or the post monsoon autumn. Although, it is possible to join Treks that run almost all year round.

The main problem experienced on Everest is altitude Sickness, this is definitely something to take seriously and to take precautions against. There is no way of telling how it will affect you until you are at high altitude.

The easiest and most effective way to limit the effects of altitude sickness is by ascending the mountain slowly and giving your body time to acclimatise to the height. Above 10,000 feet (Base camp is at 17,500) you should aim not climb more than 1000 feet per day.

You also need to stay warm and conserve as much energy as possible, drink water and above all listen to what your body is telling you, if you don not feel right don not push yourself to hard because you may push yourself out of the trek altogether.

Make sure you pick the right trip for you, make sure you give yourself time to acclimatise to the altitude even if that means flying out a few days before your trek starts.

The Sherpa people are invaluable in making any expedition to Everest whether it be to Base camp or even Summit. They will carry your gear, food, tents and it is important that they are respected. They take great pride in their Mountain Climbing Heritage and without them you will not finish the trek

Wether you join a trekking tour or climb all the way to the top, it will be an experience to treasure for a long time!

Nationally 1 in 12 persons age 12 to 15 are vulnerable to violence, approximately 80% of adult smokers started smoking before the age of 18 and the dropout rates of high school students is 9 percent. Norfolk, Va is no exception to these statistics. In keeping with enVizion’s mission to mentor our youth and also the City of Norfolk’s commitment to revive our community, enVizion is proposing the 1st Annual Teen Summit; Envision Success.

The Summit will be tentatively held April 3, 2010 at the recently opened Norview Community Center located at:

6380 Sewells Point Road

Norfolk, VA 23513

Teens attending this Summit will be given the important tools needed to encourage success and the training concept will be based around life skills. Local volunteer organizations will be facilitating this event. Teens from the ages of 13-18, will be given presentations on a variety of topics. They are currently compiling lists of resources to better define this program.

They plan to not only supply the teens with life skills but also invite local after school organizations, ie. YMCA, Yes America, Defy, Community Athletics, 4-H and more. This will give teens and alternative to going straight home from school into the local community and possibly being captured by the negative influences that pollute our local communities.

Registration for this event will be online via envision website. Additionally, registration will be available at the Norview Community Center, including the day of the Teen Summit.

Hello there!

Great news today that China is going to go to Copenhagen and talk targets on climate change. In a way it is surprising seeing as a developing country it is understandable that China is worried about potential harm to its economic growth from climate change targets. As a communist dictatorship it is even more surprising that they care what the rest of the world thinks on this issue, but maybe they have come round to the widely held view that it is in all of our interests to do something concrete about climate change?

Personally I am convinced that climate change is a serious problem and that human beings are contributing to it. The scientific opinion from those who know is overwhelming. Yes, history shows that there may well be a natural pattern and cause also, but the way in which we are burning up fossil fuels and failing to make that substantial move to renewables that we clearly should do is poor indeed.

So come on China, come on President Obama, and come on Europe! We need definite, radical action now, the Cumbrian floods have emphasised that, and only governments can make those major changes.

China has revealed, two weeks ahead of a global summit in Copenhagen, how it intends to cut its carbon emissions in the next 10 years.

The plans reveal China has ambitions to reduce its carbon footprint by 40-45%. This coming from one of the biggest world powers would appear to be a step in the right direction.

However, China measures its carbon emission differently to the rest of the western world. China does not call it carbon emission, but prefers to call in carbon intensity.

This is measured in amount of carbon emitted per unit of gross domestic product (GDP).

Given that China still has an expanding economy experts are sceptical as to whether this will really bring about a drop in CO2 emissions from China.

CBS Catches Up with Conservatives and Realizes Obama Has ‘Credibility’ Problem

By: Brent Baker
November 24, 2009 02:38 ET

Long after conservatives and the American people figured it out, CBS on Monday night came to the realization President Barack Obama has a “credibility” problem fueled by the “disconnect” between Obama’s promise to reduce the deficit as he pushes for massive new spending. Back in August, the CBS Evening News denigrated the town hall questioners as “unruly protests,” but on Monday reporter Chip Reid warned:

The American people are increasingly questioning the President’s credibility. He says the stimulus has saved or created 640,000 jobs, but only seven percent of Americans believe it has created any. And he’s repeatedly promised health care reform will not increase the deficit, but a mere 19 percent believe him.

Reid proceeded to relay how CBS News analyst John Dickerson “says for many Americans there’s a basic disconnect — a President who promises to trim the budget but only seems to want to spend and spend.” More amazing for CBS, Reid noted how “highly respected foreign policy analyst Leslie Gelb” called Obama’s just-completed Asia trip “’amateur hour‘ for failing to get deals locked in before the President left home.”

Katie Couric set up the story by asking: “Is the honeymoon over? Though President Obama has been in office less than a year, many Americans are growing disenchanted with his handling of the enormous problems he and the country are facing — from unemployment to health care to Afghanistan.” She introduced Reid by worrying: “Are there signs of strain apparent at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue these days?”

(Meanwhile, over on World News, ABC anchor Charles Gibson fretted over all the “problems” Obama “faces, all coming to a head, it seems, soon. Health care to be debated by the Senate but support could easily unravel, a much delayed presidential decision on more troops for Afghanistan and, on the horizon, the huge ballooning costs of the federal deficit.”)

The MRC’s Brad Wilmouth corrected the closed-captioning against the video to provide this transcript of the story on the Monday, November 23 CBS Evening News:

KATIE COURIC: Turning to politics now, is the honeymoon over? Though President Obama has been in office less than a year, many Americans are growing disenchanted with his handling of the enormous problems he and the country are facing – from unemployment to health care to Afghanistan. His poll numbers are sliding, and at least one poll, Gallup, shows his job approval rating has fallen for the first time below 50 percent. Chip Reid is at the White House tonight. And, Chip, are there signs of strain apparent at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue these days?

CHIP REID: There sure are, Katie. The President is getting battered on everything from health care to the economy to foreign policy. Some polls show Americans are increasingly questioning his credibility. It’s a speech the President has given over and over-

PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA Our economy’s growing again for the first time in more than a year.

REID: -emphasizing the good news and promising to fix the bad.

OBAMA: I will not rest until businesses are investing again and businesses are hiring again and people have work again.

REID: But with unemployment over 10 percent and expected to rise for months to come, he offered no new ideas. He says next week’s White House jobs summit will break new ground, but critics are already dismissing the summit as a gimmick. To make matters worse, the American people are increasingly questioning the President’s credibility. He says the stimulus has saved or created 640,000 jobs, but only seven percent of Americans believe it has created any [CBS News poll]. And he’s repeatedly promised health care reform will not increase the deficit, but a mere 19 percent believe him [Quinnipiac poll].

JOHN DICKERSON, CBS NEWS POLITICAL ANALYST: The more he talks about these hard issues, the less people are buying it.

REID: Dickerson says for many Americans there’s a basic disconnect – a President who promises to trim the budget but only seems to want to spend and spend.

DICKERSON: People want something to be done about the deficit, and here he’s talking about spending a trillion more dollars.

REID: All this comes as the so-called debt bomb is getting ready to explode. The national debt is now more than $12 trillion – simply paying the interest on the debt is expected to soar from $200 billion to $700 billion by 2019. The President is also suffering a credibility gap on foreign policy. He called his eight-day Asia trip a “job strategy” but came home with little to show for it. Highly respected foreign policy analyst Leslie Gelb calls the trip “amateur hour” for failing to get deals locked in before the President left home. On Afghanistan tonight, the President holds his ninth meeting with his war council, a full month after Dick Cheney accused him of dithering over the decision – and the President says it’s still several weeks away.

REID, AT WHITE HOUSE BRIEFING: Are you concerned that Americans are increasingly looking at this President as simply indecisive and uncertain?

REID: It’s a topic that dominated today’s White House briefing.

ROBERT GIBBS, WHITE HOUSE PRESS SECRETARY: I think the American people want the President to take time to get this decision right.

REID: But while the President is taking all that time, some Democratic opponents of a troop surge are stealing the spotlight. They’re calling for a war tax to pay for any additional troops. (Ahhh, the liberal answer to everything, because they have no other ideas.)

During my Words and Images class today, we viewed the film adaption of the manga Battle Royale, written by Koushun Takami.

The movie depicts a dystopian future in which classes are selected by lottery to participate in a game. The children are supplied with food, water, and a weapon, ranging from a paper fan to an automatic machine gun, and told to kill each other. Only one survivor will remain in the end, and if nobody is killed, everyone will be killed by the detonation of a metal collar around their neck.

Quite honestly, it was one of the most disturbing movies I have ever seen. I’m not sure why anyone would think to make a comic about this situation, let alone adapting it to a film. Thankfully, the blood and gore was far from realistic, making it very easy to distance yourself from the suffering the characters experience, but I still could not shake the overall feeling of injustice at the entire situation. The ending, while slightly romantic, leaves us with the realization that while this couple did “beat the game” by managing to escape the island together, every single one of their other classmates was brutally murdered.

One reason this movie really struck a chord with me is the fact that I have been recently researching the politics of the G20 Summit meetings and the recent talk of a New World Order that politicians are referring to more and more often. Battle Royale clearly demonstrates the way a government can exercise absolute power over its citizens when it has an alternative agenda to the citizens’ interests. To imagine that such levels of control could be on their way for our society is absolutely horrifying.

It is interesting to think about the fact that Americans are so unaware of the way the world is run these days. After watching a few documentaries, I have realized that, at the very least, these issues demand attention. Without the awakening of many citizens to the tyranny of those in control, our grandchildren could be experiencing events just as dehumanizing as Battle Royale.

Tomorrow I’m heading home to the Poconos for Thanksgiving break. Tonight was an interesting night… I spent my night class watching the Japanese video adaptation of the manga Battle Royale, a vision of a dystopian future where children are selected and placed on a deserted island and told to kill each other. They are told that only one survivor will remain in the end. Within the first 10 minutes, the movie turns into a constant death match, intertwined with poorly translated subtitles.

After class, I returned home and spent some time watching a few of Alex Jones’ documentaries on the possible changes going on in the political world today. In terms of the band, it reminded me of a song we had started during our last time playing together. After explaining how surreal the events of the G20 Summit were for me here in Pittsburgh, Peewee immediately began writing. I was impressed by how quickly he got his ideas flowing, especially because I hadn’t even considered writing a song on my feelings about the entire situation.

Now that we are really beginning to flesh out our entire message, I am realizing that we are really part of the resistance to dehumanization that the corporate world is attempting right now. Alex Jones outlines their methods in a few documentaries, all available on youtube for free. Our message is about the intrinsic value each of us holds as a unique human being. The time has come to stand up for our freedoms and insist that the government works for the people, not the other way around.

It’s a good weekend when you can say that you went both mountain biking and snowboarding. But

It’s a good weekend when you can say that you went both mountain biking and snowboarding. But that’s just how we shred in Western Washington. That is, when it decides only to mist one day in the lower elevations, and then dump pounds of snowflakes in the higher-ups, the next. After taking what might have been my last ride of the season on the SX Trail at Tokul with Billy and crew, I made a solo mission up to Snoqualmie Central on Sunday to slash my first tracks of the snow season.

The Cascades have been pummeled with storms for weeks now: Baker has a 100-inch base; Snoqualmie’s is growing at 42 inches. And Alpental opens Friday! It’s a special bond you share with a mountain. Anyone who’s spent time exploring the intricacies of a mountain’s form–the pleasing surface aspects, the stimulating surprises and intoxicating secrets–knows the intimate connection one can feel with their home hill, Alpental being mine.

Northwest cement–thick, wet and heavy pow. I forgot how hard it works the legs, the entire body. The moisture laden atmosphere seeped into the mountain on Sunday. The trees heaved under their white burdens. The packed powder on the runs captured up passers-by with sticky mockery. The Northwest rider is a unique one: unspoiled by sunshine or champagne pow; hardened by the cold; and stoked to shred in blizzard conditions…What?

With flat light and very low visibility, my first run took me through a steep channel of high moguls, sweetened by some soft pow in the trees and then slick fast groomers down to the new Silver Fur quad. Amid the slight chaos, I fell in love all over again with my sport.

Ghostly shapes marked the scene that afternoon–a haunting preview of snowboarding in this region. It was as if these conditions lay like a veil between this unusually early season snow and the riders who ventured to explore it, and the rest of the winter with its fair-weather patrons. The intensity was beautiful and engulfing.

Twas a weekend of woods, tracks, trails and pow–all in raw Northwest fashion. My passions were obliged…for the moment.

Building the Evidence Base: Call for Papers

Policy and strategy rely on rigorous, grounded and useful academic research. This track, a regular feature of WES Summits runs parallel to the main event and bring together all of those who are interested in developing the evidence base through collaborative research and feeding it in through networking and joint discussions with decision makers in the public and private sector internationally. Papers from some of the world’s leading entrepreneurship academics and researchers, as well as from policy makers, think tanks and businesses, will provide a Forum to create real dialogue between the evidence-base and the user community.

Papers are now sought across the following themes:

• The impact of the financial crisis on entrepreneurs and entrepreneurship across the world
• Measuring entrepreneurship, enterprise culture and the impact of enterprise policy
• Entrepreneurship and its role in economic development
• Social entrepreneurship; social innovation, social enterprise and social investment
• “Green” entrepreneurship

The themes are deliberately broad to be as inclusive as possible. Authors may submit papers that are based on data or on case studies and that cover anything within the above themes (eg access to finance, women, young enterprise, technology and innovation or policy evaluations).
