November 16th

When we got to Japan we were devastated to hear that sumo season was over. Between that and only spotting one geisha, our to do list was looking pretty meager. Luckily Giles and Anne , in their infinite wisdom, informed us that the sumo tournament was only just beginning in Fukuoka so, ignoring Lonely Planet’s advice that people start queueing at dawn for the special (and cheap) ‘on the day’ tickets, we picked up our Japanese Rail passes and massive backpacks and headed straight for Japan’s second city.

We managed to blag the cheap seats for that day for 2,100 yen (around 16 euro) but it being only 11am, the stadium was pretty empty so we had someone else’s ringside (sweat splatter) seats until around 2.30pm. The tournament runs from 8.30am until 6pm every day for the duration of the festival, starting with the lower level sumos and moving onto the world’s best in the afternoon. Surprisingly, there are only around 800 sumo wrestlers currently competing, as Japanese boys move towards the country’s latest craze – baseball.

I had always imagined sumo to be an epic battle between two massive forces of nature so when the first few competitors came into the ring, weighing little over 14 stone, I was a bit disappointed. Fortunately as the day progressed, they got bigger, until they weight around 1 kilo less than a fully grown sperm whale. I was also surprised by the amount of ceremony involved (apparently sumo was originally part of a religious ritual).

The first person to enter the stage is a man in traditional dress (looking a little like a medieval squire) who sings/chants the competitor’s name. The sumo then hauls himself into the ring, a circle with a diameter of around 15ft on a sand platform. They stretch, lifting one swollen foot over their head before stomping it down on the ground and repeating with the other foot. Then they square up, squatting down, before standing up and walking out of the ring. The referee (also in traditional dress) dances about a bit and the sumos return, squat and sometimes, leave again.

After around 10 minutes of this the fat (or sometimes not so fat) men finally get to it. The referee starts yelping like an injured seal (apparently shouting encouragement) and they rush at each other, colliding and sending all their rolls of fat (and in one sumos case four boobs) quivering towards their rear in fear.

Oftentimes this is all it takes. One puts his shoulder down lower and the other, defying the law of gravity, soars over his back, suspended gracefully mid-air in a backflip for one terrifying moment, before he hits the floor/judge/closest audience member. And that’s it. After all the ceremony, chanting and prancing, they hobble back to the stage, bow and exit the room demurely. Sumo wrestlers, unlike Irish football fans, are not permitted to show emotion after winning or losing a bout.

The best fights are the ones where the wrestlers weigh about the same and have similar strength. When their shoulders meet, neither gives way and they wrap their free arm around each other. This leads to a standoff which, after a few minutes, starts to look a bit more like the world’s fleshiest cuddle.

You would think that seven and a half hours of watching a foreign sport in an unintelligible language with a seemingly endless routine of unrecognizable religious rituals, would be too much of a good thing. But its not. As the day went on it got more and more exciting and, as the more successful sumos arrived, the crowd got more and more excited. A queue of people waiting to greet the world champions formed outside the stadium and with all the screaming teenagers and swooning women, you would have been excused for thinking that you were at a Take That concert.

We left feeling like kids who had spent the day at Disney, practicing our squats and splits and stamping on the bus, just daring people twice our size to take us on. And why not? Sumo has it all – morbidly obese men, thongs, long flowing locks, bear hugs, elaborate costumes, injured sea creatures, gravity defying belly flops and the ever present fear that the next time they fall, it could be on you. What more could you want from a sport?

More photos of sumo in Fukuoka are available in the gallery.

Here’s something you don’t see every day… a peloton of sumo wrestlers!

My daughter and I were driving around on Halloween day and came upon one of the funniest things I’ve ever seen when it comes to cyclists. There was a whole group of riders dressed in funny sumo suits. We were actually going the other way when we passed them the first time, but it was so cool that I had to get pictures, so we turned around and passed them again, grabbing some pictures out the window as we went by.

There were probably at least twenty riders, and they were creating quite a stir. Folks were honking and cheering, but they seemed oblivious. I have no idea who the group was, and if the traffic hadn’t been so crazy around them I probably would have tried to make conversation out the window to find out.

It made our day!

In other news… We’ve had some unseasonably cold temperatures the last few days, which means it was 16-18 degrees (F) when I left the house in the morning, making for a brisk commute! The temperature has climbed to the mid 30s for the ride home in the evening, and that has felt almost tropical compared to the morning.

The bike commuting herd gets pretty thin when it gets this cold, but I’ve seen more riders still out than I saw last year, which is pretty cool. (No pun intended)

I’ve got my cold weather commuting wear figured out pretty well these days, so I was comfortable. Layering and coverage is everything. Maybe I’ll do a post in the near future to review my current outfit choices.

Thanks for stopping by. Ride Safe!

IL POSTO DELLE PAROLE

Edizione Speciale

Meg:

When we arrived in Tokyo, we were a little jet-lagged (these all natural tablets helped, but there’s only so much you can do when it comes to a 12 hour time difference). So when we found ourselves awake before the sun came up on our first full day in Japan, we decided to make the most of our pre-dawn alertness and head to the Tsukiji fish market.

When we arrived, it took us a few minutes to get our bearings. We got a map from one of the many vendor stalls that are lined up in front of the fish market, which was incredibly helpful in navigating the labyrinthine system of stalls, both inside and outside. Although we were on our own when it came to dodging the crazy mini-forklifts that zipped all around the market.

Frank:

I can’t begin to explain my excitement when I saw how fresh and how diverse the seafood that they had was. Being an ex sushi chef myself I would have given anything to have a kitchen in my hotel room. Instead I had to settle for having sushi at one of the local sushi bars at the fish market. Though it was the most expensive breakfast I had ever had, I also ate the best single bite of sushi I had ever had. The chef served us both a piece of anago (salt water eel), which I had had before, but this was done better than I will probably ever find again… and believe me, I have been looking.

Meg:

Later that day, we discovered that there was a sumo tournament (or as our hotel concierge called it, sumo “races”) going on. We didn’t know what to expect, but we didn’t expect to enjoy it as much as we did. The ritual was interesting, but seeing two giant men clash and hearing the roar of the crowd was incredible.

After the tournament, we headed out in the stadium’s neighborhood for some dinner. We saw the sumo wrestlers, in traditional garb, out and about (they live and train in the neighborhood). It was an interesting contrast to see a wrestler in traditional sumo kimono (yukata) listening to his iPod.

Our first day in Japan served as a crash course in Japanese culture. We ate the best sushi of our lives, and developed an appreciation for a new sport. Not bad for 24 hours in Tokyo.

Hey There, After the game in Yokohama, I was looking forward to a last day in Tokyo to do some shopp

Hey There,

After the game in Yokohama, I was looking forward to a last day in Tokyo to do some shopping. Up until that point (Sept 17th), I hadn’t bought any souvenirs, other than some baseball caps and little things, mainly because I didn’t want to have to carry around all that extra stuff. But, since we’d be going to Sendai the next day, then back to the US on the following day, I figured it was now or never. So, in the morning, I walked around Tokyo and bought a number of things, including a video game for my PSP. Power Pros is a popular baseball video game. I have the US version of it, but in Japan, they sell a version that includes NPB teams. The newest version for the PSP was released on the 17th and I was able to pick up a copy.

For the rest of the morning, I wandered around Akihabara (called the “electric city”) where they have a lot of electronics stores. I was able to pick up some small figurines from the Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya (one of the weirdest anime shows I’ve ever seen), which I am using with some other figures I have to make a different kind of nativity scene around a small christmas tree my parents got me. I looked through six or seven stores before I found what I was looking for.

Ryogoku - Sumo Arena

After lunch, I went to watch a Sumo tournament. There are several major sumo tournaments per year, and I think the biggest was taking place while I was in Japan. I’ve seen some Sumo matches on TV, so I know the basic idea. The matches themselves only take a few seconds (maybe a minute at the longest), but the ceremony before and after the matches were interesting.

In a Sumo match, you try to force the other guy out of the circle, by pushing, slapping, or carrying him. The first person to leave the circle, or fall to the ground is the loser, even if they seem to have the upper hand. For example, if you are pushing the other guy and you trip and fall to the ground, you lose. Also, if you try to toss a guy out and you fall out of the circle before your opponent hits the ground, you lose.

In a Sumo match, there’s a burst of energy and violence, then the fight is over. Most of Sumo wrestlers are large, but the largest is not always the best. I saw matches where a fairly small guy overcame a larger opponent. It’s all about balance- if a smaller guy can get a larger guy off balance, they will pretty much always win.

There are judges sitting on each side, who would consult when there was a debate about the results of a match. They sit there in a traditional way, which doesn’t allow them a lot of flexibility. On a few occasions, I saw a wrestler fall from the ring right onto the judges. Even though I said that not all Sumo wrestlers are very large, I still don’t think I’d like one of them falling on me.

(Photo: Steve Ferrier)

EVEN Japanese are shocked when they hear about women sumo wrestlers.

Somehow the mental picture of gargantuan wrestlers does not fit well with images of petite women in kimonos or modern fashions.

Sure enough, there is nothing petite about Japan’s female heavyweight champion, Rie Isuihiji, a 19-year-old commerce student at Tokyo’s Takushoku University.

Although Ms Isuihiji is not nearly as bulky as the male sumo champions, she is hefty enough to dissuade any likely lad looking for a fight.

It is not a polite to ask a lady her weight, but let it be said that she was nowhere near qualifying for the under-70g division of the inaugural women’s sumo championships in Osaka in January.

In exquisite contrast to her size and wrestling ability, Ms Isuihiji displays refined politeness and friendliness when meeting overseas guests.

“My father is a judo instructor and I stated practicing judo when I was three,” she said, modestly refraining from mentioning that she was once third in Japan’s female student judo competition.

With a fellow member of the women’s judo club at the university, Ms Isuihiji took up sumo training partly as practice for judo, partly for fun.

Training

Then they started training for the sumo championships.

“I have to say sumo for women has different rules than for men,” she said.

“Men regard it as a martial art whereas we see it as a sport. Our rules are different too. Striking in the face is prohibited in women’s sumo, and we can’t crash into each other with our heads.”

Unlike her male counterparts, she has no special diet but tries to eat as many vegetables as possible.

Donning their orange Lycra suits and wrapping a wide white belt around their middles, the women sumo wrestlers move on to the tatamai mats of the judo dojo, make a circle with black rope and prepare to demonstrate their skills.

Ms Isuihiji is the biggest, so it is her job to face the charges of all her team-mates. They rush at her with enthusiasm, push, shove, then get gloriously dumped by the champion.

“I’m sorry,” she says to her victims as she helps them up from the floor. “I didn’t use any extra power.”

They all seem to understand — some of them finished in the top two or three of the other divisions in the national championships.

Cameraderie

The women share a camaraderie that comes not only from practising sumo and judo together but also because they all study commerce and live in the same apartment block.

There to keep an eye on them is their coach, Kaneo Iwatsuri, director of Takushoku University’s judo club, and a former Japanese judo champion.

Mr Iwatsuri says women’s sumo is not aimed at becoming a national sport but is more part of physical education.

“I teach them and we also have experts from the men’s sumo club as instructors,” he said.

“A layperson may feel that sumo is dangerous for women but if they have practised sufficiently in judo there is no danger.”

There are different weight classes in competition and they do not have to build up their bulk.

Doing sumo. That's all you need to know.

In early 2010, the Ghibli Museum in Mitaka, Japan will screen an all-new Ghibli-animated anime short exclusively in its 80-person cinema. The new short was written and planned by Hayao Miyazaki and directed by Akihiko Yamashita, the production director for Ponyo and Gedo Senki.

The short, titled Chuu-Zumou (Mouse Sumo), is a little vignette about an old man (Jii) and woman (Baa) who live in the heart of the mountains. One evening, Jii discovers a place where the mice gather and practice sumo. After finding out that the mice in their house lose all the time at sumo, Jii and Baa try their best to help them out.

The short starts showing on January 3rd, the first day the museum is open after the New Year holiday, and will stop showing on February 28. So, who wants to join me in going to the Ghibli museum next year? I haven’t been yet – though I have been to the Osamu Tezuka museum in Kyoto – and this would be a good excuse to go.
