One of the sessions I enjoyed was ‘Cloud Security – It’s Nothing New; It Changes Everything!’ (pdf) from Glenn Brunette, a Distinguished Engineer and Chief Security Architect at Sun Microsystems. He first reviewed the hallmarks of information security: CIA, the Guiding Principals, Managing Risk and so forth and indicated that the Cloud doesn’t change any of that – there’s no difference in what drives security or the concepts, it’s the Implementation that is different. So if the overall Security Services are the same, and if the traits are the same – what’s missing? According to Glenn, the thing that Cloud Computing Security demands is: CONTEXT.

He reviewed some of the challenges facing Cloud Security:

Speed – the agility to quickly configure services. Security is usually the last part of the architecture but how do you secure services and enforce them when units are getting spun up/down at a rapid pace. It’s an opportunity to re-think. One thing Sun (and others) are starting to do is bake security best practices right into the image before sending it to the cloud. Why make the customer deal with securing the underlying system when the provider can build the needed security right into the image. Pre-integration and assembly allows the customer to still deploy quickly but securely.

Scale – Today Security administrators deal with 10’s, 100’s, even 1000’s of servers but what happens when potentially tens of thousands of VM’s get spun up and they are not the same as they were an hour ago. Security assessments like Tripwire, while work, inject load and what if those servers are only up for 30 minutes? How can you be sure what was up and offering content was secure? One idea he offered was to have servers only live for 30 minutes then drop it and replace. If someone did compromise the unit, they’d only have a few moments to do anything and then it’s wiped. You can keep the logs but just replace the instance. Or, use an Open Source equivalent every other time you load, so crooks can’t get a good feel for baseline system.

Assessability – anyone with a credit card can now deploy cloud services. Maybe someone feels IT is too slow in deploying a particular service and decides to do it themselves. They now have substantial resources available and not a lot of knowledge of current policies. How can you be sure that the policies are enforced across the board on all deployments.

Transparency – Customer’s need a comfort level to know how the data is kept safe, how keys are managed, how do they constrain a problem in the cloud – essentially understanding the provider’s standards and processes. There are more IT elements, more change events, more data and less control – that’s the fear. The cloud makes these challenges more visible.

Consistency & Integrity – knowing the exact configuration of any machine at any time.

Key Management – this is a huge problem with providers. Doing a backup to the cloud (while keeping the keys close) is OK but if you intend to use that data then the keys also need to be stored in the cloud. Being able to do a fast recover can also require keys out there. Additional legal verbiage is what typically covers key management today.

Accountability – Service Level Agreements. SLA are not so strong on the provider end and customers often need to negotiate this area.

Compliance – auditors.

There are changing architectural strategies in the cloud. Tight Integration becomes Dynamic Assembly; Inspections become Telemetry of Objects; Repair & Recover turns to Recognize & Restart; and Log Scraping becomes Analytics. You just need to change some of the old habits. Opportunities exist for standardization but in the meantime, get to a manageable set of things that need to be done and build upon the automation. Glenn closed with his Cloud Security Rules:

Embrace Security Systematically

Design for High Survivability (fight thru)

Compartmentalize failure (nodes going down)

Minimize Trust Boundaries (how far does the data go)

Good advice.

At this point, Tony Karrer asked her about how all these information resources integrated into learning (we were running out of time and he wanted her to summarize; had to skip the parts on Second Life). Christy answered that the information services are a learning tool in and of itself. The key integration points are those mentioned at the beginning of her discussion. The focus on informal learning has allowed a window to open for them to integrate more of their services and information into other areas. Information services and learning space are coming together. Information services professional will evaluate content, know and integrate that information across the organization.

Is it easy to search for content using tags? Used a tool, Grocker (sp), to search across resources. The content providers are implementing social tools into platforms. Her department does not have one way to tag across resources because of the various content providers.

Mobile solutions and access outside the system? Content providers do offer some mobile access through mobile devices. The Sun Learning Exchange is set outside the server so employees can access it from their mobile devices.

more about “video_portal_final“, posted with vodpod

Oracle, Dell, Xerox and now HP – the high tech world as we knew it is changing fast. Companies

Oracle, Dell, Xerox and now HP – the high tech world as we knew it is changing fast. Companies that previously stood their ground and was seen as pillars of innovation are know swallowed into mega-companies that will challenge the marketplace with new services, products and offerings. Here is some selected tidbits from BusinessWeek in regards to the deal.

“Through its acquisition of networking gear maker 3Com, Hewlett-Packard will accelerate competition with Cisco Systems (CSCO), especially in China, practically overnight. Then comes the hard part. To make the most of the $2.7 billion deal, HP also needs to revitalize 3Com’s faded brand and persuade Western companies to take a chance on its products, designed largely in Asia.

Analysts were quick to see the logic in the planned acquisition, announced on Nov. 11. HP (HPQ) is attacking Cisco’s dominance of the market for gear that connects computers just as Cisco moves more aggressively into the market for computer systems, where HP is strong. Cisco on Nov. 3 struck a partnership with storage company EMC (EMC) and software company VMware (VMW) aimed atsupplying bundles of computers, storage, networking, and software.”

The article continues…

“HP’s bigger challenge in making the deal a success will be removing the tarnish that remains on the 3Com ’s brand in the U.S. and Europe as a result of years of mismanagement. While 3Com’s data-center networking gear has about 35% of the Chinese market, it’s practically absent from the largest companies in the U.S. and Europe, analysts say.”

We all know that mergers are not easy. Here is some news in regards to the Oracle/ Sun merger from Daily Finance.

“As expected, the E.U. raised objections to the Oracle (ORCL) buyout of Sun (JAVA) at about the same time that the Department of Justice approved the deal. The E.U.’s objection is based on the large market share that the two tech companies would have in the MySQL software business.

European authorities have been deviling American companies for years. In 2001 they killed the GE (GE) deal to purchase Honeywell (HON), which would have been the crowning achievement of Jack Welch’s tenure at the world’s largest conglomerate. The E.U. has troubled Microsoft (MSFT) and Intel (INTC) over antitrust concerns, and now it has brought up similar issues with Oracle’s plans.

The aggressive stance of the Europeans could threaten other deals in the works, starting with the planned joint venture in the search industry betweenYahoo! (YHOO) and Microsoft. Action on the merger could bring Google’s (GOOG) huge market share in the search industry under scrutiny. Even the Kraft (KFT) deal with Cadbury might be aggressively reviewed — if it ever happens. That transaction would give Kraft a huge portion of the gum and chocolate businesses in Europe.”

Yahoo! Inc plans to grow its business in India and hire additional people there, its chief executive Carol Bartz said on Tuesday.

Bartz, who was speaking at a luncheon in Singapore, said she was heading from the city-state to India where she would meet the country’s prime minister and other senior officials.

She also said Yahoo! is “happy” with its investment in China’s Alibaba, although it recently sold a small part of its shares in Alibaba.com, the Chinese firm’s listed unit.

Abertura do evento no auditório principal.

Foto do coffee-break do evento.

Amcham Business Center: local do evento.

Have a look at this news report from Barrons.com on their Tech Trader site. STEC shares lost a whop

Have a look at this news report from Barrons.com on their Tech Trader site. STEC shares lost a whopping 36% as quoted in the article and in fact were down almost 39% for the day. So have solid state drives lost their sparkle?

Barrons also wrote the day before on the STEC earnings call. The interesting parts are (a) EMC, who take 90% of all STEC drives, aren’t selling as many as they expected (b) other vendors (notably IBM and Sun) aren’t doing well with SSD either. So what’s the problem here?

For STEC the problem is clear – reduced demand and increased competition, but that doesn’t answer the question of what’s going on with the wider market.

Opinion

SSDs are expensive. SSD integration in most arrays is clunky, being a simple substitute for a standard drive. I also believe that many customers are struggling to identify use cases for solid state drives and have no easy way to measure and justify the potential performance improvements – other than to install the drives and see what happens. “Buy and Try” isn’t exactly a scientific approach.

Although it will eventually happen, I think the death of the fibre channel drive isn’t about to happen for some time.
