Yeah that’s right Sungha Jung, I said it, wanna fight about it? Alright hate is a strong word. But there is nothing worse than having a 12 year old kid show you up on such a monumental scale. So if you play guitar you will gasp and admire at this kids talent, and yes a little part of you will hate him…

It’s 11:30pm on a Friday night.. I’m sitting on my bed with my laptop on my laps writing this blog post. Norah Jones’ “Don’t know why” is playing in the background. I have a smile on my face thinking about someone. I feel like actually writing a diary entry on my pink diary with a pen right now but I guess I’ll do that before I go to bed later

The smile on my face starts with the guitar that is in front of me. I got it as a “surprise(?!)” gift early from my boy friend today Then my thought drifted away to think about how sweet he has been to me. I’m not just talking about how he gave me a present. In fact, that’s no more than just a starting point. What he said and he has done, how he responded to me and where our relationship is at right now.. those thoughts are all adding up to this big happiness on my face

I will talk about my love relationship and my thoughts on love in detail later when I have more time~ I just got distracted by watching youtube videos of this amazing little guitarist lol  He’s now 13 years old and started to play the guitar when he was eleven. It’s hard to believe he only played less than 3 years when you listen to him playing. Apparently, he has been famous for more than two years now.. only I didn’t know about him ’til today lol Well, his name is Sungha Jung. Check this talented young boy out:

A prodigy. He was born talented. This 13 year old Korean boy has fascinated the world with his slick guitar picking finger movements. His youtube videos are viewed more than 5,000,000 times and have an average rating of 5 stars (out of 5) and has over 140,000 subscribers.

It seems as if even before Sungha could properly think, since he was born, he was in love with music. He was influenced by his father, no musical star, but just an ordinary dad who plays guitar for fun. This is evident in Sungha’s playing technique, smooth, relaxed and slick, but focused. More surprisingly, Sungha has never taken any proper guitar lessons, but taught himself – just like many other famous renowned musical prodigies.

I first fell in love when Sungha came on television, called StarKing, a weekly network talent show. I fell in love even before he casually tuned his guitar. His mature manners, unlike any 12 year old boy of his age, grabbed my attention. Who is this young gentleman? Then, my jaw literally dropped as he closed his eyes and touched the strings so softly, yet making vigorous music.

His musical life has not been long, since he’s barely a teenager.  Throughout his life, he has had a total of 4 different guitars. When Sungha was only 9, he decided to spend his entire fortune, about $60 on his first toy guitar. Surprised by the talent of his son, his father buys him his second guitar, a parlor. Then without a cent, he earns his third custom made guitar, as a present by a Korean guitar manufacturer. Nowadays Sungha plays with his 4th guitar, sponsored by a reputable European guitar manufacturer, Lakewood – his official sponsor.

Sungha has become a world star, mesmerizing everywhere where there’s music. But Sungha sure does not act like one. Sungha Jung – the Korean August Rush continues with his busy school studies, spending time with his friends and keeping the gentle and calm smile on his face.

Today, I have discovered another amazing artist(s) in YouTube.  Artist(s) ‘coz they’re twins! ^^  They’re so lovely and they sing so well… Wow!  I suddenly imagined how could it have been if I had a twin sister.

And then I found out that they’re Koreans?  What?!?!

What do they have in their genes that they’re so talented when it comes to music?  Talk about David Choi.  And Sungha!  I should ask Bean, our new postdoc in the lab, if he’s also a musician.  He’s Korean too.

Anyway, if you don’t know David Choi, what about this?

I like his covers of female pop artists (Britney, Katy…)   Teehee!  David, come to Japan!!!

And Sungha?  Come on, where have you been?  He’s a legend in the making.  Or perhaps, he already is.

Oh, speaking of Koreans and Music: one day in my freshman college life, I brought my guitar to school and tried to play ‘Grow Old With You’.  You know, the one by Adam Sandler.  And then, a Korean guy passed by.

“Can you come here tomorrow again, same time, with your guitar?”

“Ummm, why?” Dazed.

“I want to record your song.”

I told him I did not compose that song or anything and that I just learned it that day for Jamie, I think, gave me the chords.  But he insisted.

Next day (after long argument with self if I should go or not): Coolness recorder.  Eng’s voice and crappy guitar playing. XD

But I think he enjoyed it.

Forgot his name… but I thought, well, in some corner in Korea, my voice might probably still be playing until now.  Huahaha!  (I wish.)

I want to go to Korea.

Guitar Prodigy.

One of my favorite songs off Michael Jackson’s 1983 album, Thriller is “Billie Jean.” What’s not to like? It’s catchy, funky and was the finished product of a Michael -in his prime- Jackson and the legendary Quincy Jones. Well, the folks at Hidden Track brought this video to our attention. Crianças prodígio me irritam, e países asiáticos estão cheios delas.
Mas esse cara eu acho foda, apesar dele ser criança, adoro as versões instrumentais que ele interpreta. A maioria das versões não são feitas por Sungha, mas ele as executa muito bem.
Me tornei fã de Sungha Jung quando vi um vídeo seu no Sedentário, ou nem foi no Sedentário, mas acredito que tenha sido.
Na verdade o que eu mais gosto no Sungha é que ele toca versões de músicas que eu gosto, e me admira uma criança de 12 anos gostar de músicas anteriores ao seu tempo.
Apesar de gostar muito, eu daria uma dica a Sungha Jung: Forme uma banda, e faça músicas boas que nem as das bandas que você faz versão.

<strong>”Romance” – Masa Sumide</strong> Heard him and this other kid playing this on youtube. Fantastic son; has a good feeling to it. Makes me feel calm and relaxed. It’s like one of those songs you listen to on the beach or on a summer vacation. Very nice. Masa Sumide plays it with more, what do you call it? Bounce? Anyway, he makes it energetic and perky. The kid, Sungha Jung (who is, I discovered a few months before, a brilliant guitarrist for his age) puts the real “romance” into it. Less detached and more graceful. Great song. Listen:

About 3 weeks ago, I was searching the song “TEARS IN HEAVEN” by: Eric Clapton in Youtube. And on the lists I saw a korean boy named Sungha Jung that played the said song that I was searching, so I clicked and saw him. I was impressed for his wonderful way of playing the song, and by that time I was really amazed so I watched other videos of him, I was amazed again and again. I observed that he is playing the songs that was already arranged by the other famous fingerstyle guitarists, so I was thinking “Is he practicing the song by listening to it?” Well, that’s right and also by the help of the music tabs. Let’s take a little closer to Sungha Jung.

His name is Sungha Jung, born on South Korea September 2, 1996.Living in Chun-ju City. His dream is to become a Professional Fingerstyle Guitarist. He started posting his videos on Youtube 3 years ago, september 8, 1996. The first song he posted was Splash by: Kotaro Oshio. And then he gathered 200,320 views and coming with 651 ratings and 291 comments almost all of those comments were positive. He is very good in listening songs through searching in the internet. He started practicing guitar 3 years  ago when he was watching his father playing guitar then finally jumped off taking the guitar and beat the strings. Currently, he is taking drum lessons and teaching himself fingerstyle guitar. He is really incredible isn’t he? Well, really incredible.

Also, his parents were not musically inclined. Really amazing ne? On 2007, He has taken drum lessons for four months and jazz piano for three months. He is really into music. hahaha. (envious) Before, he doesn’t use sheet music, tabs or whatever just to play guitar, he was just listening to the song and learn how to play it. But recently to widen up his knowledge about fingerstyling he used sheet music and tabs. “He sometimes uses sheet music when it is available, but about 90% of the videos posted has been played without the use of sheet music” from his official site.

He met famous fingerstyle guitarists and played with him. He also guested at the Korean TV Show “STAR KING”, our Charice Pempengco once guested there. He is more famous in the world than in his country because of youtube. And he is still continuing meeting new fingerstyle guitarists, all of them were really shocked and amazed.And now, he composes new songs for about 12 songs I think.

Played on guitar by Sungha Jung. <—My favorite guitarist.

I saw Sungha Jung a couple years back, when his rendition of Canon D just came out. Last night, I revisited his YouTube channel and almost immediately subscribed. This kid has talent, and as I was watching more and more of his comments I saw a trend. The video below is his lastest post as of right now.

A lot of the comments were about how his face seems really emotionless and how he seems like he doesn’t even enjoy playing. One person commented on how he plays music without understanding what the songs are about: for him its like doing mathematics.

I looked at his bio, watched a couple more video. Sometimes you see his face scrunch a bit at a difficult part… but not much more. Its easy to see where people come off frustrated. Sungha isn’t theatrical. He’s certainly not like my friends when they play instruments; they like to sway and smile. However, I like to think this kid is smiling on the inside. The reference to mathematics is such a typical thing to associate with Asians. I feel like if you’re really passionate about something, there’s a hunger to learn more and more songs. It’s not just plug and chugging. He seems a little different when he played live with Trace Bundy, like he’s enjoying himself. Hopefully, its true. You can see for yourself here.

I can not believe the prodigious talent of this kid! His name is Sungha Jung, a 12-year-old acoustic fingerstyle guitarist from South Korea. I think, in my opinion, that he is one of the best acoustic instrumentalists you’ll ever see on YouTube! And his young age makes him all the more remarkable! He plays mostly pop covers, but he also has some originals which you can check out on his YouTube site, MySpace site and his website. When I saw him play his covers of Stevie Wonder’s “Superstition,” Michael Jackson’s “Billie Jean,” and The Beatles’ “While My Guitar Gently Weeps,” I was stunned! I thought to myself that he is one absolutely promising talent who has so much to offer the music world in the years to come! For his age, he plays his chords with stunning clarity, technique and feel! Watch his right hand strums, plucks, taps and subdues the strings with his palm to get the sound he wants. Plus, he does harmonics on the fretboard you’d almost swear it couldn’t possibly be a kid playing those notes! What genius! I thank God for people with talent like his! FANTASTIC!
