For et par uger siden blev Shiaonline.dk hacket, dette er anden gang i løbet af omkring 365 dage. Jeg har derfor i den anledning fundet frem til Shiaonline.dk’s Super Admin Assadullah.

Her er et udpluk af interviewet med Assadullah, det skal siges han er et meget sympatisk menneske, for han ville bruge lidt af hans tid, selvom han har familie, arbejde og studie ved siden af, så lidt af hans tid er kostbart. så her er interviewet:

MJ: Først og fremmest vil jeg takke dig Asadullah for at du ville stille op til interview i min ydmyge blog.
I efterårsferien sidste år var shiaonline.dk udsat for et hacker-angreb fra anti-shiitiske grupperinger, dengang var der et mindre ”kold Krig” mellem forskellige muslimske hackere, er det tilfældet denne gang?

Assadullah:

Ja, der er desværre stadig en masse onde mennesker, som er kede af vores fremgang online og som bruger alle kneb for at stoppe os. Det vil vi selvfølgelig aldrig tilladt og med Allahs (jwa) hjælp vil vi komme stærkere tilbage hver gang.

MJ: Hvem var hackerne denne gang, og kom de med et budskab?

Assadullah:

Sidste gang brugte vi en masse tid på at finde ud af, hvem det var, der hackede den mest populære af vores hjemmesider. Det var en palæstinenser som var bosat i Palæstina og som ejede nogle servere i Texas, USA. Dog havde vi hverken tid eller lyst til at gøre det denne gang, da vi alligevel ikke havde tænkt os at gøre noget ved det udover at launche hjemmesiden igen med forbedret sikkerhed og design.

MJ: shiaonline.dk været nede i flere uger, og der har været rygter om at alt blev slettet, hvor omfattende var angrebet?

Assadullah:

Sidste hackerangreb var udført af en amatør som kun formåede at ændre forsiden ved at udnytte nogle sikkerhedshuller i den gamle version af phpBB. Denne gang var det en professionel hacker som slettede alle vores filer og databaser, dog vil vi inshallah – når vi kommer online igen –  komme op med al vores data uden tab.

MJ: Har i taget kontakt med jeres udbydere, om evt. et forbedring af sikkerheden? Eller var sikkerhedsbristet fra jeres side af?

Assadullah:

For at være ærlig, så har det været vores egen skyld, da vi ikke har lukket alle sikkerhedshullerne løbende, især i en tid, hvor vi ved, at vi har mange ”fjender”, desværre. Men det har vi lært noget af. Jeg har personligt stået for at lave en ny plan, der skal sikre at dette – om Allah (jwa) vil – aldrig sker igen.

MJ:Nu hvor i er oppe at køre igen, er der så kommet ændringer og forbedringer som den enkelte bruger kommer til at bemærke?

Assadullah:

Vi er desværre ikke kommet op på benene endnu, men det vil ske inshallah og når det sker, så vil vi skifte over til et helt nyt system, nyt design og ny forbedret sikkerhed.

MJ: Hvad er dit sidste ord til læserne (Og evt. Hackerne)?

Jeg takker dig kære broder for dit smukke arbejde, og så vil jeg også takke alle vores brugere for deres loyalitet og udholdenhed. Jeg lover jer alle at vi meget snart vil være oppe igen endnu bedre end før. Og til hackeren vil jeg sige:

Mange vil nu tænke, Yasser hvem? Andre vil tænke ÅHH NEJ IKKE HAM, og så er der nogen der tænker han er Sej!

Yasser Al-habib er lidt ligesom Klaus Bondam nu, enten hader man ham, eller også elsker man ham. Men han er en forholdsvis ung shiamuslimsk imam der oprindelig stammer fra Kuwait. Manden har i længere tid holdt små taler der omhandler shia-sunni relaterede emner, men så er det også der historien rigtigt begynder! han er i forhold til mange andre ikke typen der går stille for sig, men rent faktisk er han hård i hans kritik, og det blev ikke bedre efter Saddam Hussein faldt, og shiismen pludslig stod stærkere, så blev han ikke længere en lokal Imam fra Kuweit, hans videor fik andre betydninger, de florerede rundt på youtube i forskellige udgaver, visse udgaver var klippet og redigeret til et enkelt formål at stille shiismen generelt i dårligt lys, eksempelvis blev et af hans taler cuttet således at han skulle have sagt:

Sunnimuslimske moskeer skulle sprænges i luften

Senere har han kommet med hele hans tale hvor den generelt omhandlede sunnimuslimske moskeer der har våben gemt, og de derfor ikke kan betegnes som moskeer.

Men ifølge yassir al-habib kom der visse salafi-wahabistiske bevægelser og sagsøgte ham for at få ham fængslet, i første omgang fik han 1 års fængsel, og da anklageren ikke var tilfreds fik han 10 år i efter sagen blev anket. Resultatet var at han flygtede til hans nuværende bopæl i London.

Men her slutter historien ikke, Yasser fortsatte sit virke -nu på engelsk- og emnerne var de samme! da han i interviewet blev spurgt hvorfor han fortsatte med samme retorik svarede han

Vil du have jeg skal ændre min retorik for at få skabe fred folk af modsat mening, mens de stadig vil kører deres ligende retorik?

og til spørgsmålet til hvorfor han bander over De første 3 kaliffer sagde han

Jeg vil her rette dig, jeg bander ikke over dem, jeg forbander, og jeg vil først stoppe med at forbande den dag, dem jeg er uenige i vil stoppe med at lovprise samme personer, forvent ikke at jeg stopper mit virke, mens de fortsætter deres propaganda! Hvad skal jeg gøre når modparten ikke tolerere det mindste kritik af historiske begivenheder, at de ser mange af profetens venner som gode mennesker det gør vi ikke shiamuslimer ikke, det er almen kendt ligesom vi kritisere de første 3 (kaliffer) så kan de kritisere os det vil jeg personligt ikke have noget imod. ham der dræbte Ammar bin Yassir var muslim (ifølge sunnimuslimer), ham der dræbte Kallifen Othman var muslim (ifølge sunnimuslimer) men ham der dræbte omar var en “Persisk ild tilbeder” selvom mange historiske kilder siger det modsatte, hvorfor lyve over os selv?

Interviewet er kommet i den arabiske tv-station ANB, og desværre er der ikke engelske undertekster. Selvom Hans retorik er Hardcore og ikke noget for svage sjæle, så kan man rent faktisk opfange visse pointer som jeg synes er gode, jeg er ikke ligefrem enig i hans måde at føre diskussion på, men alligevel har han fået mig til at tænke på mange ting.

(Reuters) – KIRKUK, Iraq (Reuters) – A car bomb exploded in a crowded market place in northern Kirkuk on Monday, killing at least six people and wounding six others, Iraqi police and hospital sources said.
“Many cars were set ablaze and many shops heavily damaged due to the powerful explosion,” said police Major General Torhan Abdul-Rahman, deputy police chief for the city.
Violence has dipped sharply in Iraq over the past 18 months but attacks remain common in volatile areas like the oil city of Kirkuk, the northern city of Mosul and in Baghdad.
Kirkuk is one of several flashpoints between Iraq’s Arab-led government in Baghdad and minority Kurds that U.S. officials fear could lead to renewed conflict in Iraq.
Kurds see the city and surrounding province, which lies over one of Iraq’s longest producing oilfields, as their ancestral home and want it wrapped into their semi-autonomous enclave. The city’s Arab and Turkmen populations fiercely oppose those aims.
The tensions between both sides are often exploited by insurgent groups trying to reignite the sectarian warfare that almost tore Iraq apart.
Disagreements over Kirkuk held up the parliamentary passage of a law needed to ensure Iraq’s next general election takes place in January, threatening to delay the vote.
The election law was passed just over a week ago in an emotional session, but has since fallen foul of complaints by Sunni Arab Vice President Tareq al-Hashemi that it doesn’t give Iraqi refugees abroad a voice.
Hashemi has until mid-week to veto the electoral law or let it pass.

CHP’li Onur Öymen konuştu arşivlerde kalan tarihi belgeler yeniden gündeme gelmeye başladı, Dersim’le ilgili Dördüncü Umum Müfettişlik raporuna göre olaylarda 13 bin 160 kişi öldü, 11 bin 818 kişi sürgün edildi.
Kalan Müzik’in sahibi Hasan Saltık’ın, Dersim araştırmasında ulaştığı yüzlerce belge ve fotoğraf kitap oluyor. Belgelerde ölenlerin ve sürgüne gönderilenlerin gerçek sayısının yer aldığı bir raporla, olaylar sırasındaki fotoğraflar da bulunuyor

CHP Genel Başkan Yardımcısı Onur Öymen’in TBMM’deki konuşmasıyla gündeme gelen ‘Dersim İsyanı’ ve devletin düzenlediği harekâtla ilgili 71 yıldır gizli kalmış belge ve fotoğraflar gün ışığına çıktı. 1937-1938 yıllarında harekâta katılan asker ve subayların, dönemin emniyet müdürlerinin, vali ve kaymakamların kişisel arşivlerinden isyanla ilgili hiç bilinmeyen yüzlerce fotoğraf ve yazılı belgeye ulaşıldı. Belgeler arasında, ölenlerin ve sürgüne gönderilenlerin gerçek sayısının bulunduğu bir raporla, isyanın liderlerinden olduğu öne sürülen Seyit Rıza’nın idam kararının alındığı mahkeme çıkışında oğluyla kol kola görüldüğü fotoğraf da bulunuyor. Bölgenin önemli aşiret reislerinden Şahin Ağa ve amcasının cansız bedenini, askerlerin mağaralara düzenlediği baskınları ve halkın çaresizliğini gösteren fotoğraflar da dikkat çekiyor. Bir başka karede ise askerlerin gözetimindeki kadın aynı anda iki çocuğunu birden emziriyor. Fotoğrafların birinde ise harekât emrini veren dönemin Başbakanı İsmet İnönü, Hozat ziyaretinde görülüyor.

4. UMUM MÜFETTİŞLİK RAPORU

Dersim olaylarıyla ilgili 9 yıl boyunca araştırma yapan Kalan Müzik’in sahibi Hasan Saltık, arşivindeki bu önemli belgeleri ilk kez SABAH’la paylaştı. Harekâta katılmış, hayatta kalan asker ve bürokratlara, ölenlerin akrabalarına ulaşan Saltık; sahaflar, müzayedeler, özel koleksiyoncular ve İngiliz Ulusal Arşivleri’nden de yararlanarak, kendi tabiriyle ‘çuvallar dolusu belge ve yüzlerce fotoğrafa’ ulaştı. ‘Katliam’ olarak nitelendirdiği Dersim olaylarında ölen ve sürgüne gönderilenlerin sayısının yanlış bilindiğini söyleyen Saltık, “Harekâtın başında olan bir subayın Dördüncü Umum Müfettişlik raporuna ulaştım. Bu rapora göre, 13 bin 160 sivil ölü var. Sürgüne gönderilen hane sayısı 2 bin 258. Kişi sayısı ise 11 bin 818″ diye konuştu.

“KAN İÇER İNSAN ETİ YERLER”

Dönemin Ovacık Kaymakamı’nın Ankara’ya yazdığı bir rapora da ise Tunceliler’in kan içip, insan eti yediği, güneşe taptığının yazıldığını anlatan Saltık, “Harekât için daha ne bekliyorsunuz demeye getirmiş. Bir müzayedede o dönemin Tunceli Emniyet Müdürü’nün fotoğraf albümünü de ulaştık. Harekat sırasında çekilmiş fotoğraflardı. Bir vali muavinin arşivini de bulduk, ölenlerin tek tek fotoğrafları var” dedi. Belge toplarken zorlandığını da ifade eden Saltık, nedenini şöyle anlatıyor; “Bazıları hiç konuşmazken bazıları anlattıklarının kayıt altına alınmasını tercih etmedi. Konuştuklarının öldükten sonra yayımlanmasını isteyenler oldu. Kimi ‘12 Eylül’de solcular bizi öldürür’ korkusuyla elindeki tüm fotoğrafları imha etmiş. Araştırmalarım sonucu şunu gördüm ki, Dersim hareketine katılan askerlerin, subayların çoğu bir daha eski haline dönememiş. Çoğunun söylediği aynı: ‘Çok kötü şeyler yaptık’.”

BU DA JANDARMANIN DERSİM ANDICI

Jandarmanın 1931′de tuttuğu Dersim raporunda, “Kızılbaş, Sünni’yi sevmez, kin besler ona ezelden beri düşmandır” deniyor. Türklüğü telkin için 2 okul açılması öneriliyor
Jandarma Umum Kumandanlığı’nın (Jandarma) 1931 yılında Dersim’le ilgili tuttuğu raporu ortaya çıkardı. Tutulan raporlar, bir kitap haline getirildi ve sadece 100 adet basıldı. Türk Tarih Kurumu Kütüphanesi’nin raflarında bulunan “Dersim” kitabında; aşiret, aşiretlerin yapısı, hükümete yakın olanlar olmayanlar, devlet karşıtı aşiretlerin içlerine sızma yöntemleri ile Batı’ya göç ettirilen aşiretlerin listesine yer veriliyor.

KILIÇDAROĞLU’NUN AŞİRETİNE

Cumhuriyet döneminde, Dersim’de devlete karşı ayaklanan, kendi içlerinde işbirliği yapan aşiretlerin tümü sürgün ediliyor. Sürgünde Trakya ilk adres oluyor. CHP’li Onur Öymen için ‘gereğini yapsın” diyen partisinden Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu’nun isyancı dedesinin Kureyşanlı Aşireti, Tekirdağ’ın Saray kazasına gönderiliyor. Trakya’ya sürgüne gönderilen 347 aileden 3 bin 470 kişinin ulaşım masrafları devletin kasasından çıkıyor. Botanlı Aşireti Edirne (Uzunköprü), Koç Uşağı Aşireti ve Hozat Reisleri Balıkesir (Balya), Şadilli Aşireti Balıkesir ( Bandırma), İksor Aşiret Reisleri (Kırklareli), Balabanlı Aşiret Reisleri Çorlu’ya gönderiliyor.

KİM BU DERSİMLİLER

Rapordaki en dikkat çekici bölüm ise devletin bakış açısını ortaya koyması açısından Dersimliler’le ilgili tespitler:

Aleviliğin en kötü ve tefrika değer cephesi Türklük’le aralarındaki derin uçurumdur. Bu uçurum Kızılbaşlık itikadıdır.
Kızılbaş, Sünni Müslümanı sevmez. Kin besler, onun ezelden düşmanıdır.
Kızılbaşları, yuvarlak kafası, geniş alnı basık yüzü ile gözlerinin daima akın yollarını, uzakları araştıran cevvaliyeti ile Türk neslinden ayrı bir nesle bağlamak güç bir iş olur.
Dersim; Türk, Faris, Asur, Ermeni, Arap gibi milletlerin tortularını almış bir mıntıkadır.
Ermenilik Dersim içinde şimale gittikçe kesafetini kaybetmiş ve ancak kasabalar ve onların yakınında barınıp taşamamış ve hiçbir zaman Dersim umum nüfusunun yüzde 20’sini aşamamıştır. Harbi umumiden sonra izlerini bırakarak ölmüştür.

I wrote this a while back, around the time when I was in the process of converting to Islam.  I thought this might serve as a nice segue into my upcoming story of my journey to begin covering my hair.

Both the Bible (only in the Old Testament though) and the Qur’an contain passages that seem to condone violence in the name of religion. Christianity has come to understand these passages, such as where God demands the killing of entire people groups, in their historical-cultural context. In other words, if we are to interpret these passages correctly (and not, for example, say that God’s people should still be killing idolaters) we need to realize that the world is very different now after Jesus’ appearance on earth. Christians adopt a New Testament hermeneutic towards the Old Testament.

However Sunni Islam cannot do the same. This is because the doors to re-intepretation (ijtihad) are closed. Islam cannot do hermeneutics in the same way that Christianity can. The work of interpreting the Qur’an and the hadith to formulate Islam’s beliefs and practices was done by the Four Law Schools (AD 680-915) and, according to Sunni tradition, there is no opportunity anymore to re-interpret these texts. Interestingly though, Shi’a tradition allows re-interpretation of the texts through the Ayatollah who has the authority to declare how the Qur’an and the hadith speak to Muslims today. This is the challenge for Islam today, to provide a way for Muslims to stay faithful to their sacred texts whilst at the same time providing an interpretation, or a hermeneutic, that addresses some of the specific issues faced by Islam today.

         Şavaklıların konuştuğu Şavak dili Kurmanci dilinin bir alt dilidir. Bu dil, Kurmancinin Güney bölgelerinde konuşulduğu gibi gırtlaktan konuşulan bir dil değildir. Daha hafif ve sade bir dildir. Şavaklıların şivesi, Elazığ, Malatya, Dersim, Sivas, Erzincan, Adıyaman ve İç Anadoludaki bir kısmı Alevi  bir kısmı Sünni olan aşiretlerin şiveleriyle benzerlikler gösterir. Bu benzerliklerin akrabalıktan mı, yaşam alanlarının ortaklığından mı veya yaşam biçimlerinden mi (göçer-yörük) olduğu tam olarak kestirilemez.

              Bu bölgedeki aşiretlerin başlıca kolları olan; Canbeg, İzol, Parçıkan, Şadıllı, Reşvan,  Şavak, Badıllı, Xelikan aşiretleri göçebe aşiretlerdir. Tarih boyunca daima yer değiştirmişlerdir çeşitli bölgelere göçler vermişlerdir. Bu göçler genelde çok uzak diyarlara olmuştur. Yeri gelmiş Şah İsmailin hışmına uğramış ta Horasanlara,Teberistanlara, kimi zaman Osmanlının iskan politikaları sonucu Anadolunun içlerine doğru Konya bozkırlarına, Kırşehire, Yozgata, Tokata, Amasyaya,Çukurovaya  …  sürülmüşlerdir.  Ama gittikleri yerlerde dillerini ve benliklerini yaşatmaları  yok olmalarını engellemiştir. 400 yıl önce Horasan’a  gönderilen aşiretlerimiz, orada da isimlerini muhafaza etmişler. Günümüzde halen aynı isimlerle varlıklarını devam ettiriyorlar.  O bölgede kurdukları ‘Çemişgezek Federasyonu’ (Bu isim daha sonra ‘Zafaranlu’ diye değiştirilmiş) adı altında Şadlu, Kowanlu, Şivakanlu, Raşvanlu, Kikanlu, Karaçorlu, Topkanlu, Hizolanlu (İzolanlu), Badinanlu, Helikanlu, Şeyhakanlu (Muhtemelen bizim aşiret; çünkü bir kolununda batıda Urmiye gölü çevresinde olduğu ki, o da meşhur Simko Şikak ın aşireti olmalıdır), Milanlu(Milli), …  diye toplanmışlar. İsimlere bakarsanız ne kadarda benzerlik olduğunu anlarsınız.  

         Dillerinde ki durumu gözlemlemek ve bizim dil ile olan benzerliklerini görebilmek için ise  o yörenin müziğine bakmak yeterli olur sanırım. Farsçanın etkisiyle oluşmuş olan hitabet tarzı hariç gerisi tamamen aynı bir dildir. Uzakları yakın eden internet ile biraz araştırma yapılırsa, benzerliklerin sadece isimler ve dilde olmadığı yaşam biçimi, giyim-kuşam benzerliğinin de olduğunu farkedebilirsiniz.  Onlar da göçebe yaşam tarzı yaşamışlar. Göç, yayla, çoban, koyun…  sözlü edebiyatlarında önemli bir yer tutar.

      Aşiretlerimizden yaşlıların sık sık söylediği Horasandan geldik ifadelerine gelince. Bu pek gerçekçi gelmiyor çünkü oradaki aşiretler de buradan gitmişler, ancak gidenlerin bazılarının geri dönmüş olma ihtimali de mevcuttur. Böylece o bazıları genel sanılmış olabilir. Bir diğer durum ise, bize dayatılmak istenen ‘Siz Horasan’dan geldiniz öyleyse Türkmensiniz sonradan asimile oldunuz’ tezidir. Bu tamamen uydurma bir tezdir. Çünkü Horasandaki soydaşlarımızn dilleri de inançları da aynıdır. Bazıları Kurmanci, bazıları Kırmancki konuşur. Mezhepleri de bir kısmı Alevi, bir kısmı Sünni-Hanefidir tıpkı bizdeki gibi.

Today is Obama’s unlucky day, and the overwhelming wave of public outcry at his mishandling of the Ft. Hood Massacre has led him to run for cover, using Iranian and al-Qaeda agents for self-defense.

YahooNews, a we’ll-print-anything-to-run-cover-for-obama news outlet, is pushing 2 reports this morning to this effect.

In the first report, “AP Source: Gitmo 9/11 suspects to NY for trial”, Devlin Barrett of the AP informs the world that Obama will move several Al-Qaida terrorists to New York City, and put them on trial in a civilian court. This information was leaked to the AP, by someone in Eric Holder’s department. Barrett says that Holder will make an announcement this morning.

Uh, does ANYONE in the BHussein Obama Administration remember what happened the LAST TIME those Al-Qaeda terrorists were New York City? Anyone? It wasn’t fucking pretty.

In the second report featured by YahooNews, “Obama orders review of possible Fort Hood signs” two AP reporters, indicate that Obama has ordered an investigation of why warning signs of Hasan’s proclivities were ignored.

Then to avert anger over this Sunni Muslim who committed the massacre for purely religious motives, Obama has given the Justice Department the go-ahead to seize 5 Shiite Mosques and a NYC Skyscraper tied to Iranian intelligence and terrorism-promotion activities in the U.S.A.. The Jerusalem Post reprints the AP report on this move.

Seeing that Obama worshiped in a Sunni Mosque as a boy, and seeing that his whole family is Sunni, according to his sister Maya, this attempted seizure will only inflame the Islamic world with internecine strife.

Though other news outlets, such as CBS, are reporting these events, the Associated Press, after the gaff last month of being associated with a report which named Obama as Kenyan-Born, has evidently considered it their duty to be extra-devout in running cover for Obama on the Islamic issue.

What’s really being defend here, though, is not National Security, but rather Obama’s rapidly declining poll numbers.

To belittle the horrific nature of the Ft. Hood Massacre, to deny its association with the authentic nature of Islam, and to play games with issues of National Security to defend your political image, all indicate that Obama, having usurped the Presidency for his own power and glory, uses his pretense of authority for his own power and glory.

Glory? This man has no glory. He has no power. He certainly has no power over me.

No shit. According to Iran’s parliamentary speaker-cum-chairman Ali Larijani, America and her allies are attempting to propagate a perverted image of Islam in the Middle East. Quoted in the Tehran Times, he claims the deep-rooted divisions between the differing Islamic schools of thought in the region have been forged by foreign intelligence services.

Known for his philosophical outlook, Larijani added that it’s the responsibility of each Islamic sect to “make every effort not to fall into the U.S.-Zionist trap” of portraying Islam as a terrorist-supporting religion. The worrying thing is, he may have a point . . . .

I’ve been asked on several occasions to share my story of how I came to Islam, and each time I struggle with exactly how to tell it, what to include, and where to start.  There are so many things that have influenced me and taken me toward Islam that it would be impossible to mention all of them.  So, I’ll try to give you the basic version of it here without it being too long and overwhelming. 

Some background

 I grew up in a conservative Christian home with two happily married parents – my dad worked and my mom stayed at home with my brothers and I to home school us through the large part of my K-12 experience.  We were dual-enrolled much of the time, meaning we would go in to public school for sports and music (and art sometimes), so we still had the opportunity to interact with other kids.  We belonged to the Pentacostal side of Christianity (although I never really understood the whole speaking in tongues thing; it was all a little weird and fake to me), and moved our way over to Southern Baptist when I was in high school.  I began attending a Christian church (yes, this is actually the name of another denomination of Christianity) in college, and felt pretty happy with the emphasis on reason and intellect rather than solely emotions. 

Questions

One of my main goals when I first started college was to become a missionary to other countries, but very quickly hit a pretty big roadblock when I began to get involved with international ministries on campus and developing friendships with people from other countries.  I just could not fathom how a fair and just God could send all these people, and all their ancestors, straight to hell for not believing in Jesus (as).  One day they die, and they find themselves in a horrible place for simply not believing in someone they’d never heard of?  This bothered me immensely, and I realized that I needed to find the answer to this question before I set off to another country to try to convince people to believe in my religion when I wasn’t even entirely sure of it myself. 

Time progressed and while in graduate school, I developed a friendship with a girl who graduated from seminary, who was studying in the same graduate program as I.  We began discussing the concept of the deity of Jesus, and neither of us could find any logical explanation for it, nor could we find any concrete support for it Biblically.  She herself, having gone through Bible school, had given up and became agnostic (along with several other of her classmates!).  I resigned myself to the fact that perhaps these questions could never be solved – I would continue to believe in God and follow Christianity because it was the best religion out there.  And as many Christians say, I’d rather be wrong and believe in God than be wrong and not believe in God!  In my mind, Christianity was the only viable religion through which I could believe in God. 

An encounter with Islam

  Upon graduating from graduate school, I began teaching at a university language program.  I walked in to class and immediately saw that the majority of my class was Arab.  I had never really met an Arab before and knew nothing about their culture or religion.  I was surprised to find that they were very social, outgoing, polite, and well-mannered.  From what I had seen on TV, I thought they would all be angry and suspicious of me!  I decided I needed to learn more about my students, so I began to read online about the culture and religion.  One of the first things I learned that shocked me immensely was the fact that Islam considers itself an extension of the monotheistic religions of Judaism and Christianity, and accepts all the prophets, including Jesus, culminating in Prophet Muhammad (saws).  I was surprised that Muslims were so closely tied to Christians religiously, as I had thought they worshiped Prophet Muhammad like Christians worshipped Jesus.

Since the majority of my students were very friendly, I decided to ask them some questions about their religion.  Some had no idea; others were more knowledgeable.  One in particular (who wasn’t a student, but a friend of a student) began to even debate with me about Christianity, which always left me shocked and infuriated because I had always considered myself to be very knowledgeable about my faith, yet I couldn’t give him one logical answer that didn’t involve Christian jargon or concepts that had no alternate explanation.  I tried to get him to discuss some of the issues I had with Islam, but he easily explained those in such a logical fashion that I was left stuttering and had nothing else to say since he made perfect sense. 

Getting Serious

Finally, I decided to take matters seriously and began pouring over a huge Bible concordance, along with a hefty book entitled “Hard Sayings of the Bible,”  written by renowned Biblical scholars.  I thought surely if I understand the difficult aspects of Christianity, I could convince him that my faith was right, and he might even convert! 

So I began my journey.  Some of the issues were explainable, such as the differences in numbers and dates and even names among the Old Testament books – a scribe made a simple error.  That doesn’t mean the meaning is compromised though… did it?  But as I read, the issues grew more numerous, the contradictions more obvious, and the inconsistency of the portrayal of God more difficult to ignore.  As a fairly educated individual, if I read something like this for a class, in no way would I pass over any of this without ripping it apart for numerous logical inconsistencies and a lack to prove conclusions with solid evidence.  Finally, I reached the breaking point when I came to the explanation of when God told the Israelites to destroy the occupants of the land of Canaan – to kill every man, woman, and child – everything that breathes.  The explanation?  God knew these children would grow up to be evil so He wanted them to be killed too.  Wait.  I thought children weren’t responsible for their sins until they reached a certain age.  And more important, how could God create innocent life with the knowledge that He would order their destruction without giving them a chance to know the truth and choose their path on their own?  Where was their free will?  They wer punished for being born in the wrong land?  How was that their fault? 

I wept as I read the explanation.  So cold, so callous… yet more than that, is this the God I serve?  An unmerciful, unjust, unfair God?  Is it?  I laid awake in bed that night, crying and pleading with God to make it right somehow.  Help me to understand.  After some time, I slowly began to realize that I had two choices if I wanted to continue to believe in God – which I absolutely did.  1. The Bible is correct and God is an unjust and unmerciful God, or 2. The Bible is incorrect and God may actually be just and merciful.  With all the other blatant inconsistencies in the Bible, along with my earlier doubts about the deity of Jesus, I chose option 2. 

From darkness to light

 Even though I had decided the Bible could not be God’s word, I still felt very unsettled and uprooted from everything I had based my entire life around.  I recall telling my Muslim friend once that he was so lucky to have such a solid, logical base to support his beliefs.  I felt I had nothing.  I felt so empty.  I believed in God but I knew nothing else.  It became a very dark time for me; I slept little and my mind was always occupied with reading more about the Bible and trying to educate myself as much as possible – I wanted to be really sure.  I delved into the issues surrounding the compilation of the New Testament (politics, power, and control!), and the coffin lid was officially nailed shut when I learned with a shock that Paul’s version of Christianity was copied and pasted directly from the prominent religion of Tarsus at that time - the religion of Mithra!  That was when I decided I was no longer a Christian.  I had joined the ranks of my seminary friend.  

Around this time, my Muslim friend randomly brought me a Quran with commentary.  I had asked him for one several months earlier, but he hadn’t seemed too interested and had apparently forgotten.  But, by God’s perfect timing, he suddenly remembered and brought it me – just as I had lost all hope in my own religion.  I remember when he gave it to me; I was excited to finally get the real truth on Islam, from Islamic scholars themselves – but I also wondered if I had time to get into all the inconsistencies of yet another religion.  If Christianity was this exhausting and the explanations obscure and based primarily on conjecture and not fact or evidence, I imagined other religions would be much worse. 

That night, as I got into bed to read before sleeping, I looked between the Bible concordance and the Quran, trying to decide which one to read.  I opted for the Quran, thinking I needed a change.  I opened it, and began reading the first chapter, the Fatiha.  From the very first line, the very first sentence, the very first verse, I felt the strength of the words.  The power of the words.  The pure, simple logic.  It was as if the Author were speaking directly to me, to someone who has the same doubts and questions as I had.  The commentary also went into great detail about many of the issues I had been dealing with in Christianity, and even brought up a few I hadn’t even thought of yet!  I couldn’t put it down, and found myself reading far longer than I had planned.  

That night, for the first night in months, I slept all the way through the night, without waking fitfully, without feeling fearful (I had been feeling so afraid at night that I had started leaving the light on… I had actually been seeing lights and strange movements in my room which scared the living crap out of me).  That night I needed no light.  I slept with the Quran and my Bible next to me. 

And so I continued reading, and learning.  I visited websites (such as al-islam.org), and tried to learn what Muslim scholars had to say about the religion.  It made so much sense.  I also greatly admired the honorable and respectful treatment women were given, all the rights and great care afforded to their protection.  It was so refreshing to the point that when I saw my female Muslim students in class, I would have tears in my eyes because I was so awed at how they respected themselves, and how the men around them respected them.  In all honesty, I was convinced that Islam was the right path from that very first night.  But, I wanted to be sure.  I could still barely even think the word “Islam” without a negative reaction, so I wanted to explore everything before making a final decision.  And, after about a month more of reading, listening to lectures, asking questions, and praying, I made my decision. 

The decision

I wanted to tell my Muslim friend about my decision, since he, after all, was the impetus for all of this.  He began a debate with me about something in Christianity, and didn’t even notice when I agreed with him.  He finally stopped and thought I was being sarcastic, and seemed unsure of continuing.  I tried my best to convince him I agreed with him, but he still seemed dubious.  I finally went further and told him that well…. actually I’m not a Christian anymore…. it just doesn’t make sense to me.  He was dumbfounded.  And I continued, “and I’m about 85-90% convinced that Islam is the right path.”  He was in even more shock, and certainly didn’t believe me immediately.  He began asking me a lot of questions to determine my sincerity, which I found interesting since Christians would simply start rejoicing and start pushing them to get baptized – no questions asked! 

Finally, in May 2008, I said my shahada.  My conversion was not like what many Christians say they experience – upon accepting Jesus as God and Savior, they always say they feel overwhelming joy and happiness – a great rush of emotion.  When I realized fully that Islam was the right path, I didn’t feel a huge rush of emotions.  Instead, I felt clean. I felt pure.  I felt that the turmoil inside was finally quiet and at rest.  I felt that my logic and belief in God were finally in accordance with one another – both supported the other.  I felt so relieved.  In fact, I felt like I had come home. 

The beginning of a new story

My story doesn’t end there of course; I still had much to learn, and many challenges and trials ahead of me, which I hope to share here as well.  I’ll save it for a new post though since I fear this one is far too long!  I hope no one is asleep yet.
