There is an eatery in the heart of Asia town (Sunnybank) that still belongs to the prehistoric timee

There is an eatery in the heart of Asia town (Sunnybank) that still belongs to the prehistoric timee (like many restaurants and eateries there) that embrace authentic Taiwanese fare at its best.

When I say prehistoric, I mean before Bread Top and Easy Way franchises burst into our little city and made pearl milk tea and sausage wedged sweet breads so popular with Westerners.

That place is called Half Time.

It doesn’t look like much (or hygienic), but for years, my family and I have been coming here to gorge ourselves on the $2.50 soy milk, pearl milk tea, shallot pancakes and Taiwanese rice buns for breakfast. There’s nothing like watching the diligent workers carefully assemble the rice bun one piece at a time and having it handed to you still piping hot. After breakfast, my mother always follows the ritual of popping beyond the border to fetch a few groceries. A morning well spent! This is another one of those beaut little gems that only locals would know about- cheap, fast, delicious and most important of all, authentic.

Shallot pancake and vermicelli in soup, thickened with corn starch, served with XO sauce, pork intestine (it’s quite yummy!), bamboo shoots and mushrooms. With warm soy milk, $20.

Half Time Tea Bar is located next to High Fresh supermarket in the complex joining Sunnybank Plaza on Mains Road. I encourage those a little unfamiliar with Taiwanese cuisine to come for lunch, when they often have special deals with rice and your choice of either two vegetables or meat sides. Free tea is available in a large boiler at all times. Hooray!

Boxcopy invited Damian and I for tea at their Lantern (or Fort) and dinner last night. And it was really nice to finally just hang out.

As part of their project, Anita Holtsclaw has been surveying skill testers i.e. ‘the claw’ and testing her skills as a ‘hunter’ of mass-produced cultural artifacts contained within each machine; Anastasia Booth has hired a mycube and is exhibiting objects within this space; and Tim Woodward will catch up with a local friend to enjoy a Peking Duck each. The public is also invited to participate by suggesting places or experiences to discover in the area, or any points of interest. For further information and to review documentation refer: Boxcopy in Sunnybank.
