I dont know the possiblity of an intelligent machine in a near future but it is very exciting to think of a thinking machine. It is not about the thinking but about the man’s tireless effort to mimic the nature, to cross the limits of the physical world. Here is a news tells that IBM’s super computer has simulated a cat’s cortex which is nearly equivalent to 4.5% of human brain which is not a mean achievement.

But I wonder how long it will take for India to enter into the league of such nations which make breakthrough in outsmarting nature.

Cray, Inc. walks through the upgrade process of the Kraken supercomputer from Quad-Core AMD Opteron to Six-Core AMD Opteron.

Commentary:

Cray XT5 Supercomputer (Jaguar), after updating from quad-to-six-core AMD Opteron processors, boasts a 2.3 petaflop per second performance peak (theoretical) and 1.75 petaflops (Linpack benchmark). The “Jaguar” has almost 250,000 processors. The IBM Roadrunner can ONLY manage 1.042 petaflops by comparison.

Now, if I could be granted a few minutes (seconds?) on the Jaguar to index my media collection

As amazing as today’s supercomputing systems are, they remain primitive and current designs so

As amazing as today’s supercomputing systems are, they remain primitive and current designs soak up too much power, space and money. And as big as they are today, supercomputers aren’t big enough — a key topic for some of the estimated 11,000 people now gathering in Portland, Ore. for the 22nd annual supercomputing conference, SC09, will be the next performance goal: an exascale system. Today, supercomputers are well short of an exascale. The world’s fastest system at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, according to the just released Top500 list, is a Cray XT5 system, which has 224,256 processing cores from six-core Opteron chips made by Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (AMD). The Jaguar is capable of a peak performance of 2.3 petaflops. But Jaguar’s record is just a blip, a fleeting benchmark. The US Department of Energy has already begun holding workshops on building a system that’s 1,000 times more powerful — an exascale system, said Buddy Bland, project director at the Oak Ridge Leadership Computing Facility that includes Jaguar. The exascale systems will be needed for high-resolution climate models, bio energy products and smart grid development as well as fusion energy design. The latter project is now under way in France: the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor, which the US is co-developing. They’re expected to arrive in 2018 — in line with Moore’s Law — which helps to explain the roughly 10-year development period. But the problems involved in reaching exaflop scale go well beyond Moore’s Law.

LOTRO, LOTRO, LOTRO…where do I begin to discuss the Prologue and Epic Book 1 quest in this game? Oh

LOTRO, LOTRO, LOTRO…where do I begin to discuss the Prologue and Epic Book 1 quest in this game? Oh that’s right! NO WHERE, because I still haven’t been able to downloaded it! So far the process of being in this class with a MacBook has been the biggest pain and frustration of college to date. No one is to blame except for my lack of technological skills along with MacBook’s lack of corporation with Windows computer games. It is absolutely ridiculous.

The way it was once described to me, Windows are like the freeway, and Mac’s are like the toll way. Both are used to get you to the same location in the same amount of time, but only certain people can ride the toll way. And no I don’t mean a certain race or class level is allowed to buy a MacBook, I simply mean that MacBook’s are designed to be more selective and elite. Windows are a more general and basic computer system.

I love my MacBook, probably more than my little brother, but with my luck, of course I ended up in the writing seminar class that only works well for Windows/PC users. This competition between computer systems reminds me of McKenzie Wark and Gamer Theory 2.0. Wark believes that American society today does not work as a team. Everyone is always competing to be bigger and better than everyone else. This is how I see the rival between Windows and Mac to be.

MacBook’s appear to be lighter, thinner, and more aesthetically appealing, where as Windows are bulkier, heavier and user friendly. Though it is all based on matter of opinion as well as what you plan to actually use your computer for. Apparently, Windows works better for computer games. Who knew? I believe Mac’s to be better for using programs such as Adobe InDesign and Photoshop because the quality makes the pictures sharper and clearer. Either way, two great computer systems that have been around for such a long time and are constantly developing and changing and growing, what do you think could happen if the two morphed their powers together into a Super Computer from heaven?

Think about it? This would cause peace between the two companies as well as, peace between my MacBook and sanity. I’m pretty sure there is some type of economical problem with this utopian computer world I’m trying to make, but a girl can dream can’t she?

All I’m saying is, once you go Mac, you don’t ever want to go back! Ok, that’s not really what I’m trying to say. I just wish there was something I could do about being able to download LOTRO onto my computer without having to spend an extra $150 and go through the process of downloading a hundred different things onto my hard drive before I can get it all up and running smoothly. It’s frustrating and I needed some place to vent.

I find the world created and written by Tolkien to be ethereal, magical, imaginative, original, ingenious and inspiring. But without having downloaded or played Lord of The Rings Online yet, I’m afraid my insight about how the two compare will not be too helpful.

Life has turned into a busy mess, but I guess that’s the nature of doing three studio courses

Life has turned into a busy mess, but I guess that’s the nature of doing three studio courses in one semester. It doesn’t look to be slowing down any time soon either!

I have a lot of stuff to hit in this post, so let’s get right to it, shall we:

- Inglorious Basterds was glorious. We discuss the film at length in the next episode of Cine-Rama (coming very soon) with special guest Eric Martin of The Trip, Comics Playground, and DC Noise. I think he’s on about 96 other podcasts too . . .

- I’ve been eating a lot of Chinese food lately. Like a lot, a lot. It’s ridiculous. And I still don’t get tired of it. Do I have a problem?

- A new super computer is set to appear as a guest on Jeopardy. http://www.popsci.com/scitech/article/2009-08/supercomputer-takes-jeopardy I just hope they remembered to program it to answer in the form of a question.

- Meet the coolest new dinosaur discovered in decades: RaptorRex! http://www.cnn.com/2009/TECH/science/09/17/tiny.t-rex.dinosaur.discovered/index.html Sure, he has powerful legs, razor-sharp teeth, and is nine feet tall, but the remains were discovered in China . . . and as we learned above, I would clearly be able to devour him before he got me.

- Jones Soda (delicious, and sadly hard to find most places) is going to be marketing a series of limited edition Dungeons and Dragons themed flavors. The flavors are set to be: Potion of Healing, Sneak Attack, Eldritch Blast, Dwarven Draught, Illithid Brain Juice (my favorite name), and Bigby’s Crushing Thirst Quencher. What? No magic missile?

And now back to making life more animated . . . .

I am an avid reader of Life Extension articles on the net and invariably the subject of the “Singularity” comes up.

What is a Singularity you ask ? My definition…..Singularity: The ultimate virtual bullshit life for the ultimate agoraphobic nerd in you. But seriously folks, it is the idea that all knowledge we possess in our brains will be up loaded to a computer and will no longer need our inconvenient “biological” bodies with its terrible short comings, such as its need for sex and food for example. They, ” the Sigularitists” hope that in the end all humans will be part of the collective and all problems will be null and void. In this dream world we will live forever. Haven’t these ding dongs seen Terminator. It all sounds to good to be true and it is. There are so many problems with this idea that it hurts my brain to think about it. First, your Self or individuality, and most importantly your body will be annihilated. Your body and soul will become “redundant” and out dated. I find this repugnant. What sort of short sighted, self loathing bull shit is that? only an asshole would give up real life for a promise for a virtual after life….humm smells like a Religion.

Below I posted this comment on a ” Singularity” Blog.

“I have been a Life Extensionist for more than 30 years. I understand the ramification of the ongoing technology boom. But, on the other hand the Idea of a singularity seems the ultimate annihilation of individuality, in other words, DEATH. The individuals evolved to increases our chances of survival as a species and a individual. Also, it gives a venue for competitions ,which tests ideas and designs against each other in a harsh environment. The lack of competition and new ideas would render our species extinct. It would also doom thier beloved “Singularity” to a diservedly protracted and lonely death. The lack of opposing Ideas alone would open up the Singularity to certain death when contacted by another biologic or technical species. Another option of the singularity w ould be to create a virtual world where individuals compete against each other to see which Ideas and designs work and which ones do not. Hey, wait a minute, that sounds like real life as we know it.

I am all for technology which makes individuals more efficient but, I stop at networking our, especially my, consciousness to a central computer; this is the ultimate form of communism. Who decides which ideas work and which ones don’t? The Singularity? The singularity is only as good as the programmer who designed it. It doesn’t matter if it is self learning, how will it determine what is an idea worth knowing and doing and which are not? How would the Singularity decides on what criteria is useful? WHY WOULD IT CARE IF IT HAD ZERO COMPETITION? Unless the singularity could test ideas in double-blind manner in a harsh environment (again sounds like real life) the knowledge gained would be pure folly.

So be careful what you wish for! It just might kill us all including the coveted “Singularity.” The possible applications of a super intelligent computer would be in testing scenarios and designing machines and many, many other things to numerous to mention but, the knowledge gained, would need to be real world tested.
One last thing, I sorta , kinda like my biological body and individuality. I do not want to upload or download my consciousness or unconsciousness for some thing or government to do as IT pleases with it.

A Singularity is not immortality it is death of the individual plain and simple.”

This Utopian society called a “Singularity ” where all is known and no one dies is quite dreamy if your life sucks and ,you can’t compete, then all the pain will go away and, all the pleasure too. If your individuality is preserved than, which it can’tbe in a pure singularity, you’ll be floating around in a virtual life programed by someone who never left his computer and never lived a real (actual) non-virtual life. ..Sounds boring ..where can I sign up? Imagine a world , no reproduction, no sex, no fear, no joy. You get the picture, or do you? So all of you Utopian, virtual, hive-mind nerds out there in internet Borg land try this… Get up.. back away from the computer… put the mouse down… Now go climb a real mountain.. Even better, heaven forbid, leave your house and find an non-virtual girl to have real sex with! Maybe just maybe then you’ll change your mind. For me, I’ll take the real thing.

After conquering the chess world with Deep Blue, IBM is taking the next step as Watson will be competing with human contestants on the television show Jeopardy!

IBM has been working on Watson for two years. It is a super computer with massively parallel analytical capabilities designed to handle semantics, the meaning of words. The computer will use statistical methods to determine the validity of its calculations. It will not be connected to the Internet or outside databases.

Jeopardy! is the long-running quiz game show covering a wide range of topics contestants need to quickly and accurately respond to.

Deep Blue was an IBM supercomputer designed to calculate over 200 million chess moves per second. It defeated World Chess Champion Garry Kasparov in 1997.

“The essence of making decisions is recognizing patterns in vast amounts of data, sorting through choices and options, and responding quickly and accurately,” said Samuel J. Palmisano, IBM Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer.

“Watson is a compelling example of how the planet – companies, industries, cities – is becoming smarter,” Palmisano said. “With advanced computing power and deep analytics, we can infuse business and societal systems with intelligence.”

First chess, then Jeopardy! Next, Survivor. o_O

The robots are coming. We’ve covered the inevitable technological singularity at HowStuffWorks

The robots are coming. We’ve covered the inevitable technological singularity at HowStuffWorks.com and it seems like news of computer advancement is making the headlines with increasingly regularity. While the situation isn’t yet as dire as “Battlestar Galactica” made it out to be (or as unevenly written), it does seem like the robots are indeed getting smarter.

In fact, according to the Guardian and Reuters, scientists at New York’s Cornell University have a super computer named Adam that has already surpassed scientific legend Isaac Newton. Adam observes regularities in the natural world and devises laws based on the data. In a manner of hours, the computer managed to figure out Newton’s laws of motion.

The researchers insist that the bot’s main skill is in cracking tons of data to spot underlying natural principles and, while this wouldn’t replace human scientists, it could seriously speed up advancements across the entire spectrum of scientific research.

Sound exciting? Frightening? Well, get used to it.

This week, we took a look at what was hot in the Netherlands (Liberty X’s “Just A Little”), France (Marlene & Phil Barney’s “Un Enfant De Toi”), Denmark (Nelly’s “It’s Getting Hot in Herre”), Norway’ (Shakira’s “Underneath Your Clothes”), and Latvia (Bryan Adam’s “Here I Am”). Now that’s a world beat!
