Nelson Rydgis is one of the major villians in the story. One thing that generally seems unrealistic

Nelson Rydgis is one of the major villians in the story. One thing that generally seems unrealistic to me is where the average or morally dubious guy somehow turns evil because he has powers. I realize that a some of people probably would start committing crimes if there were to suddenly acquire power. However, most people probably would not. After all, a gun could give them the same leverage that powers might, and firearms are much easier to come by. So, barring insanity, it’s more likely a villain would already be a bad guy before gaining powers.

This is at least true in the case of Nelson Rydgis. Nelson grew up in Los Angeles. His parents died shortly after his seventh birthday, scarring him deeply. The situation was exacerbated by his adoptive uncle and aunt, who had been going through divorce proceedings at the time. Nelson was shuffled between the two, who were too busy making each other miserable to pay any attention. When he dropped out of school and joined the gangs at 14 years old, neither of them even noticed. Nelson left at 17, and spent the next five years involved in a great deal of illegal activities. Eventually, he double-crossed too many people, and ended up alienated everyone he had ever known.

Nelson had always had an explosive temper. Dynamite on a short fuse, and just as deadly. Nelson went on a killing spree, shooting half a dozen random people before calming down. He then began to systematically track down and murder everyone who had done him wrong, starting with his aunt and uncle. He was arrested shortly afterward.

Nelson has received four life sentences, and it is likely he will receive the death penalty, as his trial is still ongoing. In between cases, Nelson has been held in the Duque maximum security facility, to minimize the risk of retaliation by one of his many enemies.

Unfortunately, Nelson was also in town the day something triggered superpowers in random people, and was one of those to gain them. He broke out of prison immediately. Nelson, perhaps as an extension of his self-centered attitude, has absolute control over his own body, telekinesis over himself and his body functions, in a way. This manifests mainly as enhanced speed, strength, endurance, and resilience. He is the pinnacle of physical condition, and then a step beyond. He is also bulletproof, as his control over his body can even harden his skin, making him impervious to physical attacks. If he is somehow damaged, he can heal up to twice as fast as an average person.

His advanced mental state is also a dangerous weapon in itself. His reflexes are greatly increased, and he is capable of keeping up with multiple events and opponents simultaneously. His furious wrath often accompanies this acceleration, which can impede his reasoning skills.

And finally, Nelson is a vicious, ruthless murderer with no conscience. He has no respect for anyone other than Adam McCollister, (his superpowered partner in crime,) and Nelsons loyalty to him is fleeting at best. He is a self-centered, greedy, powerhungry individual, and a very dangerous threat to the heroes.

Not sure what the outfit would look like exactly but it definitely wouldn’t be from Kmart because Kmart sucks! And of course, no capes! Edna knows her business and I’m not going to second guess her. Although without a cape a flourishing exit just isn’t quite the same, now is it. In any case, it will be flattering to the physique and buoyant yet classically understated. Plus, it will have a special pocket for my iPod. Oh…and a glow in the dark chest log and neck collar trim.

Marvel Writer Dan Slott has promised big changes for Peter Parker in Marvel's Dark Reign: T

Marvel

Writer Dan Slott has promised big changes for Peter Parker in Marvel's Dark Reign: The List – Spider-Man one-shot.

The comic is the last of a series of eight Dark Reign: The List one-shots that see the villainous Norman Osborn taking steps to neutralise his greatest enemies.

“Two Avengers summits ago, I was there when Brian Michael Bendis and Matt Fraction pitched 'The List',” Slott told Newsarama. “Back then it was called 'Project Muscle'. I know. That was the working title. It's like when they shot Star Wars and called it Blue Harvest.

“When we were talking, and as we've been talking about 'The List' and 'Dark Reign', the main power broker in all of 'Dark Reign' is Norman Osborn. So, dear God – [long-time Osborn foe] Spider-Man's got to be integral to this storyline. He's got to be there.

“When you look at all 'The List' issues, big things happen. Ronin's been captured and locked up. You have Bruce Banner's being exposed to stuff that can turn him into the Hulk again. Hundreds of people die under Daredevil's watch, which kicks Andy Diggle's Daredevil run into high gear.

“So you can bet there's a big thing that we've all been planning for and gearing toward with Spidey and Iron Patriot.

“It builds off things that have been happening in Spider-Man, but if you haven't been reading Amazing Spider-Man, everything is explained for you. And it does propel the Marvel Universe toward the next phase. I don't want to say… well, let's just say it moves the story forward.”

Dark Reign: The List – Spider-Man, illustrated by Adam Kubert, is out this week.

The guys on our Parking Team continue to go over and above the call of duty. The following is an e-mail I received from one of our members, detailing last Sunday’s “Wow!” moment…

I just wanted to sing the praises of the 12:30 pm parking team. Yesterday after I got done with Starting Point 2, I was leaving church to meet some friends for lunch. I pulled out of my parking spot and my car was not driving normally. So I pulled over in the parking lot and saw that my right front tire was completely flat. One of the guys on the parking team (he has a brace on his arm from surgery) was actually running after me in the parking lot because he saw the flat tire. When he got to where I was parked, he had already called on his radio asking if someone could help me. So Curt, his son Jordan, Mario, and Casey changed my tire for me. I am so appreciative of their help and kindness!

This morning Curt even called me to make sure that I got my tire checked today because he was worried about the lugnuts not being tightened enough and the wheel coming off.

As a single girl at church, it is so nice to know that there are people there to help in cases such as these! Now I need a bumper sticker that says I heart the 12:30pm parking team!:)

-Ainsley Stephens

I’ve said it a hundred times: it’s guys like this that are the face of the Summit Church, not Pastor J.D., not me, not any other staff member. They get it, and they go above and beyond to make sure folks receive five-star treatment.

Today I was drawing the X-Men and I was looking at back issues for inspiration. I kept returning to the issues drawn by the late great master Dave Cockrum. There’s just something fascinating about his linework! I couldn’t ask for a better artist to emulate. Here’s some images that I found from his tribute website. I encourage you check out more of his work. Here’ some of my favorites below!

The whole gang is here in this classic look at the X-Men. Now that I think about it, I think my favorite X-Men from this era are the top three in this image.

Avengers Assemble! Well, at least three of them took the time to show up. Hawkeye, Goliath and Black Widow look positively dynamic in this piece. I’m not keen on the random shape behind them, but I’m sure Dave had his reasons.

Once upon a time, Mantis and the Swordsman were newlyweds! Now Mantis is green (Does anyone know how that came about?) and a member of the Guardians of the Galaxy. Swordsman is no longer among the living. There’s that distracting shape in the background again. Grrr.

The Vision and Captain America arrive late to my Avengers Assemble call. Better late than never as they say. I’m loving how haunted the Vision looks and Cap’s expression is priceless. I think the circle works better here than the amputated triangles shown in the two images above.

It’s a Knight! Of horses? Or maybe he’s the Rook! Could he be the Rook Knight? Does he have special chess powers? I don’t know. However, I really love the design of this character from his winged helmet to his science fiction boots. Cockrum knew how to design a costume, sometimes merging seemingly disparate elements into a cohesive whole!

Cockrum’s creation, the amazing Nightcrawler, is having a bit of a hard time in this last image. Dave obviously had a great sense of humor. The inclusion of the vulture is simply too funny!

Thanks for checking out Dave’s art with me! I hope it inspires you like it has me!

Oh, X-Men Forever, how I want to love you! Really, I do! I love the concept and I love the era in

Oh, X-Men Forever, how I want to love you! Really, I do! I love the concept and I love the era in which the comic takes place (The conceit of this title is that it picks up right after legendary author Chris Claremont was forced off the title 16 years ago). Having Dave Cockrum covers like the one above is certainly a nice treat! However, I have not been loving this series. It was a refreshing switcheroo to have Wolverine taken off the playing board right off the bat, and I even enjoyed the “evil” Storm that came out of nowhere. It was a bit madcap and perhaps it was done for shock value, but it certainly got my attention. I started off reading the series with the excitement I used to feel when I was a younger reader, but that excitement diminished with each issue. Kitty somehow absorbs/phases one of Wolverine’s claws? There’s a possible child clone of Storm? And to add insult to injury, she’s going to be called Lil ‘Ro? Professor Xavier is keeping secrets? Nick Fury is going to be a mainstay character in the title? A whole issue is dedicated to exploring the background of another Trask descendant? Oh, but wait, the real clone may be the evil Storm? It’s all too much. It feels like Claremont decided to jettison all the elements that made the old X-Men stories beloved. Killing off Wolverine (although we’ve been treated to flashback stories about Logan and Nick Fury after his death) in favor of a toothless Sabretooth falls flat for me. Evil Storm and child Storm are two Storms too many (I can’t believe I just said that!) and the fact that one of them might be a clone is an old chestnut that has lost its flavor. Breaking up Jean and Scott over an affair that never happened feels forced to me. Okay, Jean held a torch for Logan and was keeping his secrets. And how many more stories do we need about Xavier keeping secrets?

*shakes head*

I want to like this title. I really want to love it. But upcoming solicits like the following aren’t going to make me hold my breath for a glimmer of excellence.

X-MEN FOREVER #15 & 16

Written by CHRIS CLAREMONT
Penciled by PETER VALE (#15) & TBA (#16)
Cover by TOM GRUMMETT
GREAT JUMPING ON POINT…the fate of PERFECT STORM! The last time we saw Storm, she was fleeing from the X-Men, having blinded Sabretooth and killed Logan. Now, we turn our focus to Wakanda to see what became of the evil clone of the woman that the X-Men loved and trusted. ALSO: new two-part story starting with Issue 16 as CHRIS CLAREMONT continues his landmark run on X-MEN FOREVER! Don’t miss a single panel! Plus, an extra feature detailing a timeline of what other Marvel Universe stories were occurring during the current X-Men Forever saga!
#15 – 40 PGS./Rated A …$3.99
#16 – 32 PGS./Rated A …$3.99

Tom Grummett is certainly a capable artist and I have read that Claremont enjoys collaborating with him. However, Grummett’s art, while serviceable, doesn’t excite me. I find his figures to be pretty standard, lacking a sense of pizzaz. Costume design is rather generic as the above image represents. This Storm must be pretty evil as she’s wearing hand me downs from Captain Universe. It doesn’t bode well that the artist for #16 is To Be Announced. Hopefully Paul Smith will pick up the pencil for a few more issues, but even his art has been more than a bit loose for my taste. I was willing to drink from the well of super-scribe Claremont, but in regards to this series at least, the well seems a bit shallow.

I miss this Storm (words by Claremont and art by Cockrum). Fierce, determined, and fueled by naivete and outrage. This is a character worth reading about with no need of clones or alignment changes to make her interesting.

The page above comes from the Classic X-Men reprint series and is drawn by Dave Cockrum. It was inserted in between pages 3 and 4 of Uncanny X-Men #104. I always love seeing the human touches on original art pages even if it’s just the series title and page numbers. It’s a glimpse of the magic behind the scenes that makes the art process relatable. I find it inspirational. Part of me wishes that Claremont had run with a Logan and Ororo romance in X-Men Forever. What other place could this relationship be properly explored? And Banshee’s alive in this alternate reality! Hopefully he’ll return to the team, but I highly doubt it. He was briefly seen at Wolverine’s funeral, but he was canoodling with Moira MacTaggert. I’m still going to keep reading X-Men Forever, but I hope the series tightens up its cast and plotlines. This book has the enviable position to explore new territory with some of the most interesting characters in comics. I hope it gets around to it.

Love this storyline of Kick-Ass, when an average teen decides to become a super hero. It is good nation-building storytelling stuff in a recession at the movies! Dig it.

KICK-ASS tells the tale of an average teen Dave Lizewski (Aaron Johnson), who is a big comic-book fan. One day deciding to become a super hero, he chooses his super hero name, Kick-Ass. Choosing a suit, make-up and mask to wear he sets out to rescue people from villains. He just has no super powers.

His life is never the same as he incites a subculture of copy cats, is a target of villains. A highlight of the film is when he meets a pair of crazed vigilantes, in the form of an 11-year-old sword-wielding dynamo, Hit Girl (Chloë Moretz) and her father, Big Daddy (Nicolas Cage).

Let me at this movie. Sounds great for kids and families. Teenagers are the heroes of the new world. Go Kick-Ass at the box office!

Halloween may have been yesterday, but today we take a look at some versions of Storm that definitely celebrate the spirit of the holiday!

This classic Bill Sienkiewicz cover depicts Storm as a thrall to Dracula! This story was a thrilling read when I was younger. I could not fathom a way that Storm could reverse the vampiric curse!

You actually have to read Uncanny X-Men #159 before you read the Annual. Brent Anderson drew this stunning cover. Oh, the horror!

This mini-series featured a Storm from an alternate reality who due to her time in Limbo has lost her natural mutant powers and instead relies on magick.

This is the original artwork of that same cover by the legendary John Buscema! What an amazing look from behind the scenes!

I leave you with an Andy Kubert drawn Storm dressed as a witch from the 1996 Fleer trading card set. Happy Halloween!

As children develop a need to get creative in this economy at insatiable rates to save their world

As children develop a need to get creative in this economy at insatiable rates to save their world, the rise in popularity of the Dora Links Dolls and her online interactive world of fashion has grown a market where young girls worldwide want a doll that they can interact with and experiment with their own creativity regarding her fashion choices.

Effectively the doll, facilitates and grows the talents of a new breed of emerging collaborative fashion designers.

Interesting.

Hispanic Business recently commented about Martel’s Dora Links Doll making a leap in maturity from 5 to 12 years of age, for girl consumers worldwide, claiming the doll was too sexualized for children aged 5.

Always ignoring what adults say, because they know that whining consumer children will win their parents over anyway, Matel is continuing to hawk the new Dora Links Doll with great success, for $49.95 at Walmart Stores.

Dora Links is the #1 gift American girls want now, or for Christmas. The demand for the doll reflects a trend that young girls worldwide, want more control of the world in which they live.

The Mattel Dora Links Doll is an exciting innovation in computer-connected play, appealing to technologically savvy kids. Girls can customize their doll online and watch as she magically transforms right before their eyes, simultaneously on the doll and in the online world. The Dora Links Doll allows girls to directly influence her adventures as they help her solve online mysteries.

The Dora Links Doll offers groundbreaking interactivity that allows girls to customize the doll and watch as she transforms before their eyes

By changing her hair length online, the Dora Links Doll’s hair magically changes as well

As girls explore and solve online mysteries (which include Dora assuming a variety of disguises), her speech, eye color and jewelry color can change to correspond with their play

The Dora Links doll also has a magical alert system; she knows when new mysteries are being added to DoraLinks.com

Or in other words, Dora Links Doll allows young girls to have an experience of altering their dolls career, world adventures and fashion choices… in a manner that was only reserved for men who had Stepford wives in the past. (No, I am not talking about fellow bloggers jokes about Tom Cruise & wife Katie Holmes perceived representation!!!) But I am talking about any kid this amount of control.

Whether or not, the ethics of raising a generation of consumer, control-freak daughters worldwide who can manipulate every move and fashion choice of their Dora Links Dolls, is a good idea–the fact remains that the next generation of girls in the world–want creative control of their world, their doll-friends, their lives and their fashion creativity–from 5 years of age an up.

The new market trend is exciting. Storytelling of fashion savvy female child super heroes… like fashion designers going on worldwide adventures to exotic locations is super super hot.

This will be the case for the next decade.
