While there aren’t many stand-up comedians that I acquire to be terribly comic, Doug Benson’s experiment with getting high for a month straight provided many chuckles. More importantly, it provided insight on the movement to expand Medical Marijuana in California and the DEA repression they face. This film could’ve easily become a documentary on the Medical Marijuana movement, and hopefully some filmmakers will acquire a movie that focuses on that struggle.

Benson’s 30 days of smoking and eating herb was inspired by the 30 downhearted days Morgan Spurlock spent eating hasty food in Orderly Size Me (another film I’d highly recommend) .

I especially enjoyed Benson’s visits to places like the “420 Temple”, and a dash he made to Vancouver to visit the “Prince of Pot” – Marc Emery. Emery is a primitive seed distributor and the editor of the trustworthy “Cannabis Culture” magazine (which isn’t available through Amazon, but can be found at most bookstores) .

“Neat High Me” also introduces us to some Medical Marijuana patients, including a young woman who first started using it at the age of 17 when she was going through her cancer treatments. It’s a crime that cannabis isn’t legally available to anyone who wants it for medicinal, spiritual, or recreational reasons. Pot is forbidden because immense pharmaceutical companies don’t have a patent on it.

People who want to spy more of the political, social and economic issues bewitching marijuana will want to check out DVDs like:

Emperor of Hemp: Every Revolution Needs a Hero

Grass

American Drug War: The Last White Hope

The Corporation

Songs of Freedom

It would be too easy to objective write off “Neat High Me” as a stoner flick, for this documentary is both hilarious, poignant, and has some serious political undertones.

Doug Benson is a stand-up comedian from Los Angeles best known for his work in “The Marijuanalogues” and VH1’s “Best Week Ever”. In this documentary, he spoofs the opinion first introduced in Morgan Spurlock’s “Tidy Size Me”, by going without marijuana for 30 days, and then smoking marijuana for 30 days.

The most surprising aspect of this film are the two scenes in which DEA agents raid dispenaries in California. California, for those who don’t know, allows marijuana to be distributed legally if you have a special card from a certified doctor. For all of the hoopla over State’s Rights in the Terri Schavo case, I found it very alarming to perceive the Federal Government ignore Californian’s State’s Rights.

Led by a killer soundtrack, and Doug Benson’s snide humor and amiable personality, “Smart High Me” is a mammoth, gargantuan film.

“High”-ly recommended!

And now a review for all the stoners who glazed over the review above:

Doug Benson will be performing at Lakeshore Theater on 12/6 at 4:20pm. Tickets are $20.

You might know Benson from NBC’s Last Comic Standing. Doug is also a series regular on VH-1’s Best Week Ever. He also makes recurring appearances on ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live. On the classic sitcom Friends, he had the nerve to hit on Jennifer Aniston. He has his own half-hour special on Comedy Central, is a recurring character on The Sarah Silverman Program, and he got Larry David in a headlock on HBO’s Curb Your Enthusiasm.

Doug also stars in Super High Me, a documentary about the effects of not smoking marijuana after smoking marijuana for a long period of time. On a similar thematic tip, he’s also a co-creator/writer of The Marijuana-Logues, a show that’s been a hit (small pun intended) in clubs and theatres from Los Angeles to New York.

I’ve been on a bit of a documentary kick lately. I’ve already talked about I.O.U.S.A. and I just finished Maxed Out, which takes on personal debt and the credit card companies as opposed to the national debt. Just like I.O.U.S.A. it serves as a wake-up call for financial responsibility. I first had this wake-up call after attending a Dave Ramsey, Financial Peace class about a year ago and I can’t stress enough how important is for the individual to maintain financial responsibility. Debt is crushing people out there so I suggest you take control before it comes down on you. One probem I had with Maxed Out is that they never told the consumer to take control of their finances. All the film did was points it’s finger at the big, bad credit card companies and debt collectors and while I agree that these companies take advantage of consumers, I also believe that these consumers have the opportunity to avoid a lot of this if only they would take financial responsibility and control

Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room was another pretty fantastic film. It seems like between this one, I.O.U.S.A. and Maxed Out we cover governmental financial irresponsibility, corporate financial irresponsibility, and personal financial irresponsibility. So that makes for a nice trio. It’s a very interesting film and it leaves you with a pretty good understanding of why that company was destined to fail.

I also just recently saw Harvard Beats Yale 29-29. Certainly an interesting little documentary about an extremely interesting football game. It’s wild how many people are mentioned as being associated with the team, who went on to become quite famous. People like George W. Bush, Al Gore, Meryl Streep, Tommy Lee Jones, and Garry Trudeau. I also was very impressed to learn about Brian Dowling. Dowling was the inspiration for B.D. in Trudeau’s Doonesbury comic and up to the point of that tie, there had not been a game in which Dowling had started and finished and been on the losing team since the 7th grade. That is just amazing. I do not know how he fared collegiately from a W-L standpoint after the Harvard game, but that’s a remarkable feat. He didn’t fare too well in the NFL though.

I also just watched Super High Me, which chronicles comedian Doug Benson’s “investigation” into the affects of marijuana on the human body and mind. Inspired by Morgan Spurlock’s Super Size Me, Benson takes it on himself to not smoke marijuana for 30 days while undergoing a litany of tests. Then he follows that up with 30 days where he smokes so much that he’s high during pretty much every waking hour. I think he could have done more in the way of medical testing. I exaggerated when I used the term “litany”. There is also a point where the DEA is raiding and shutting down medicinal marijuana dispensaries and I believe he should have done more to show the legality of those actions. Yes, the filmmaker did point out it was legal with a quick message on the screen, but no one ever dared argue with the protesters who were acting so offended or even ask those tough questions to play devil’s advocate and inspire the protesters to choose their words wisely. At one point you hear a protester yell (Or maybe this is a combination of two quotes) “The DEA isn’t doing their job! Their job is to stay out of California!” …uhhh, how remarkably stupid is that? That is the DEA’s job? Well why isn’t someone paying me? I’ve stayed out of California my whole life. In this film we also see Sarah Silverman, Patton Oswalt (of Big Fan fame), Dave Navarro, and the apparent Prince of Pot, Marc Emery. (Who knew?)

So do I feel more educated? Well, I dunno. I certainly prefer the classroom. Not in the sense that it’s more enjoyable, or easier to have a conversation about. But in the sense that if you take a class on a topic you should leave it with a pretty solid foundation of knowledge. These films are great for digging that hole for you to pour that foundation, but they are not a foundation. For one they are almost always biased. Maybe the bias is subtle (I.O.U.S.A.) or maybe the bias is obvious (Super High Me). Either way it exists. Yes, I’m sure it exists in the classroom also, but in the class room you spend much more time on the topics, also you are usually sent out to write things like research papers, which encourage you to do your own fact finding. This leads to a more rounded informational intake. Which in itself is probably the main reason the class room is a better way to learn. The breadth of information is much wider. That can’t even be denied so I’m not gonna to even explain myself.

I have another batch of documentaries lined up to watch so maybe in a couple weeks I’ll be doing this again. I don’t see why not. I would suggest all of these if you have plenty of time. It just turns out that the way I ordered them in this blog is probably the same order I’d suggest watching them.

* indicates movies watched instantly

The Field (1990) - 7/10 – The second film of Jim Sheridan (My Left Foot) about an unrelenting farmer who covets a field his family has farmed for generations, but does not actually own. In swoops a wealthy American (Tom Berenger) who wants to buy the field and create a highway. Things go horribly wrong when they confront the man.

Super High Me (2007)* - 7/10 – Doug Benson’s take on Morgan Spurlock’s Super Size Me, where first he goes 30 days sober and then goes 30 days smoking weed every day. Its a mostly harmless, somewhat amusing documentary about Doug and his standup until the last 15 minutes where it becomes kind of a proponent for a state’s right to legally have medical marijuana shops (shown to footage of various ones being raided by the DEA). There are several cameos from Benson’s comedian friends, such as Zach Galifianakis, Patton Oswalt, Bob Odenkirk, and Sarah Silverman.

The Last Emperor (1987) – 7/10 - Bernardo Bertulucci’s epic story about the Pu Yi, the child emperor from 1908 until the Chinese revolution in 1911 when he had to abdicate. It won 9 Oscars (every one it was nominated for), and was the first film to receive permission to film in the Forbidden City. Beautifully shot and mostly interesting, but a bit long at 163 minutes.

The Karate Kid (1984)* – 7/10 – Probably the first time I’ve actually watched the whole movie start to finish, in preparation of my Mr. Miyagi costume for Halloween this year. Other than that, it’s The Karate Kid, not much more I can say. Elisabeth Shue was super cute.

Taken (2008) – 8/10 – Qui-Gon goes ape shit on a bunch of terrorists who kidnapped his daughter. Like a boss.

Twilight (2008) – 5/10 – Decided to see what all the fuss was about after I enjoyed Kristen Stewart’s performance in Adventureland. It was what I thought it would be. Decent soundtrack.

This is a movie about a subject that we all love. And I think this is really the reason why I think

This is a movie about a subject that we all love. And I think this is really the reason why I think this movie is enjoyable to watch high. You learn a lot about weed and the legal system surrounding weed and the history of weed and even some cool stuff to do while high. It’s pretty funny; some of the stand-up that’s in this movie is really funny, and also the interviews. I wouldn’t say it’s hilarious, but it gets the job done. It’s also a cool concept that I think will keep you interested the whole time. In the movie, this guy stops smoking for a month and then smokes constantly for a month and he tries to see how his body responds to the changes from the most obvious ways (his weight and ability on standardized tests) to some obscure ways (he measured his psychic ability; which, for the record, rose when he smoked weed).

I would say this movie is only really funny because it is about a relatable subject. That is not to say that I didn’t like it, but if it was a movie about Medieval chocolate, I wouldn’t be that impressed. Although, I think a movie about Medieval chocolate would be cool to watch when you’re stoned, but only really if you have some food to munch on while you’re watching it. If you don’t then you’re just teasing yourself. In fact, I think most obscure types of documentaries would be fun to watch high. Imagine one on the human heart, that would have the craziest images. But I digress.

When I watched this movie, I watched the first part sober and the second part high. I thought it was a cool thing to do. You know, I was sober when he was sober and I was high when he was high. I spent the first half of the movie rolling a perfect joint that I relished in smoking during the second half. I also recommend watching this movie with food. I guess this is the type of movie that you don’t really watch for its own sake. You watch it to have a fun time watching a movie and this just happens to be the movie that you put on. A recommended setting would be to sit around with some friends, eat some wings, smoke some js, make sure you have beverages in case you get thirsty, and just watch this movie. It’s one of those movies in which it’s okay to talk while the movie is rolling. It’s fun, and it’s one of those things I would recommend doing at least once.

In honor of all my stoner friends, ex-smokers, and KStew ( I know you love the herbage girl), I have decided to list what I think are the best stoner movies of all time. I know, a sober person has no right, I too have smoked the green and leafy before ( I didn’t inhale! LOL) but I have since changed my ways. I like to spend quality time with my brain cells but as I said, this is for you guys, I love ya all and for the love of god, buy your own damn cheetos!

1) Pineapple Express: James Franco and SEth Rogen star in this half stoner flick half action movie. This is borderline retardation on film, which is why it’s funny. Seth sees a murder, James sells him weed so good “it’s almost a shame to smoke it….. it’s like killing a unicorn.” It’s full of slapstick comedy, raunchy humor and gaggles (yes gaggles, don’t be a dick) of weed. They smoke in the woods, have a light sabre fight in said woods, and find an underground pot garden……. wait, how did they get their hands on my dream journal?

2) Half Baked: Enough said. It’s fuggin half baked people, it’s the epitome of stoner movies. It’s a classic. It’s, well about weed. You have star appearances by a huge number of talent, which let’s be honest, may be in short order otherwise. I mean Jim Breur? I love a good gaot boy ref like anyone else but the talent pool is a smidge shallow, it’s pretty much this and half man half goats. Anyway, the movie has it all, even Jerry Garcia’s ashes. My suggestion? hit the bong and watch it every 420.

3) Grandma’s Boy: If you think that Grandma’s Boy is the story of a mild-mannered guy who still idolizes his gramma, think again. Starring Allen Covert, who typically appears in Adam Sandler’s flicks, this Grandma’s Boy shows he can carry a stoner flick just by being the loveable loser. Grandma’s Boy stars Covert as Alex, a 35-year-old video game tester who loves to smoke pot with his roommate Josh. Only Josh spends all the rent money on hookers and the pair get tossed out of their place. Alex goes to live with grandma and her two friends. And, well, it’s totally dumb and immature. But so funny. He spends his free time creating his own video- game and it gets stolen by his douche bag boss ( i wonder how much clothes cost in the matrix). Stoner hi-jinks ensue and before you know it someone utters one of my favorite movie lines “I’m way too baked to drive to the Devil’s house.” Watch and try not to pee yourself.

4) Cheech and Chong’s Up in Smoke: They are the godfathers of weed. They prove just that by taking their comedy routine to the big screen in their first full-length movie. With so many Cheech and Chong stoner flicks to choose from, we went with the original and probably the best of the series, Up in Smoke, if only for having the biggest joint in film history. For your viewing enjoyment, check out my favorite part of the movie, where Cheech declares “I can smoke anything” when he tells Chong about his special blend made with Labrador (part marijuana, part dog shiz ’cause his dog ate his stash). It’s a cinematic gem, damn those stingy Oscar people!!

5) Super High Me: Super High Me takes Morgan Spurlock’s concept of eating McDonald’s for 30 days straight and replaces it with pot. Comedian Doug Benson tackles this task head-on, firstnot smoking pot for 30 days before smoking it for 30 days. What he does in the process is continue doing his stand up, which I have to say was way more funny than before, and goes through tests to see how it effects him physically and mentally. He experiences weight gain and decreased lung capacity, but his intelligence scores and sperm count go up ( score one for the smokers!!!). All in all, a good time, he’s a funny guy,and if you look closely you might see other familiar faces in the background tokin it up with him. I loved it, watch it in your weed leaf bikini or wearing your rine stone encrusted pot leaf belt buckle!

Wow, that went up faster than I thought it would, I feel a little contact just from writing it. I think I’ll go now, eat some Doritos, drink a luke warm Mt.Dew and go to sleep in my jeans.

Elvy Musikka on yksi heistä.

Musikka, 66-vuotias aiemmin Floridassa, nyttemmin Eugenessa Oregonissa asuva lääkekannabispotilas, saa vuosittain useita isoja metalliastioita, joista jokainen sisältää 300 kannabissavuketta. Näiden savukkeiden kannabis on kasvatettu liittovaltion hallituksen toimesta Missisippin yliopistolla.

Muutettuaan Oregoniin 2005, Musikka on osallistunut julkiseen keskusteluun Oregonin lääkekannabislaista.

“Ainoastaan yksi ihminen on ahdistellut minua.

Poltettuaan kannabista laittomasti 12 vuotta Musikka meni 1987 yhteen monista silmäleikkauksistaan.

“NIDA on säilyttänyt ainoan laillisen lähteensä.”

Hänen nykyisessä metallirasiassaan on etiketissä merkitty kannabiksen tuotanvuodeksi 1996.

2. Super High Me.

“…you cant smoke that joint through her asshole”

Basically a 10 Minute clip (9:58 for the anal ones) that I watch from the 4:30 mark to 5:25. This is from the documentary(potumentary as I call it, creative huh?) named Super High Me where comedian Doug Benson smokes marijuana for 30 days and records what happens. I swear, when I saw that clip(cause I’m currently watching the movie) I thought “that chick must have the laziest pussy ever.” (DOPE).

Hip Hop related because..umm…well, lets not forget that one of Hip Hop’s greatest duos are these guys. Oh yeah, in related news Redman says that him and his partner in high rhyme, Method Man are making Blackout 2 and filming How High 2. (DOPE).

Have you seen Super Size Me, that movie with the guy who only eats McDonalds for a month? This movie is pretty much the same concept except replace burgers with bongs, chicken nuggets with weed nugs, and fries with well… just being fried. Of course you also replace Super Size Me’s host and test subject, Morgan Spurlock, with Doug Benson. This is a very good switch because I personally find Spurlock a tad bland. Those of you who aren’t familiar Benson’s name will probably recognize his face. He has appeared on Comedy Central Presents, VH1’s Best Week Ever, was a contestant on Last Comic Standing, and is a very popular “stoner” type comedian.

The premise of the movie started as a joke in his stand up routine, until one day an independent film producer was in the audience and approached him to actually make the movie. A couple months later Benson was preparing himself for the movie. While the premise of Super High Me came from a joke, the actual documentary is not. Before Benson began his 30 days of being “super high”, he had to stay completely sober for a month(no booze, no weed, no nothing). This was to insure that the affects of constantly smoking marijuana in the next month would be properly documented and would have a “normal” set of results to compare the “high” results to. In both months Benson took the SAT, a psychic ability test, and was monitored by his physician to determine the physical effects of marijuana. It is important to note that Benson did not drink in during his “high” or “normal” month so only the effects of marijuana would be shown.

While the main point of the documentary seems to be entertainment, it is also very informative on the topic of medicinal marijuana. Throughout the film Benson interviews many pro and anti medicinal marijuana activists. In fact Benson himself has a prescription for marijuana and is very concerned with the well being of the patients and workers of marijuana dispensaries. The film actually contains footage of multiple raids on dispensaries by government agents working with state police. In my opinion marijuana legalization is quite a sticky and hairy situation. However if pain meds aren’t working on for a cancer patient why not let them use marijuana when doctors have proven it has positive effects on patients. If someone is diagnosed with leukemia and takes tons of pills with terrible side effects that barely stop the pain, why not let them take a medication that allows them to dull out the pain yet still be active and enjoy their lives? Why rob people of their lives when terrible illnesses and diseases already are? I’m not completely sure how the government answers these questions; but whether you have a lot of these same questions as I do or just want to enjoy a movie about pot I encourage you to watch this movie. Peace.

This WSM (Weekend Stoner Movie) is Super High Me. This documentary features comedian Doug Benson (from Best Week Ever and the Marijuana Monologues) being high for 30 days straight. He has his body and mind tested while not high and then again after his 30 days of being high. The movie is a play on Super Size Me but with marijuana. If you don’t know who Doug Benson, I highly suggest you listen to the Marijuana Monologues after watching this movie.

Stoners and sobers alike have seen Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle and Harold and Kumar Escape f

Stoners and sobers alike have seen Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle and Harold and Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay. Although I do have a genuine appreciation for John Cho and Kal Penn in both of those films, their heavy racial stereotyping, and their endearment of weed and Neil Patrick Harris, there are two films which fly under the radar.

First is a documentary called Super High Me, introduced to me by a friend. As a spin-off of Super Size Me, comedian Doug Benson, often featured on Comedy Central, takes thirty days off of the ganja, then follows the thirty days of sobriety with thirty days of nonstop intoxication. Much like Morgan Spurlock’s investigation of America’s fast food chains, Doug Benson interviews physicians who help him keep track of things like health and weight gain, visits various canibus clubs where he basically finds himself in a marijuana buffet, and investigates the legal (and illegal) processes that take place between the state and federal governments. Filled with standup comedy sketches, among other things, you can spark a doobie before, during, and after the film. In fact, I encourage you to inhale with Mr. Benson, as he enjoys his magical first puff after his 30-day hiatus. Granted, I don’t remember all of it, because I was high when I watched it, but I do remember enjoying it.

The second film, Smiley Face, which I plead you watch when you’re high as balls, stars Anna Faris. From The Hot Chick to Just Friends, and even Lost In Translation, I’ve thought she was a fucking brilliant comedian. Even if you hate her guts, after watching this film, you’ll have to admit that she is THE perfect cinematic stoner. From the munchies to the mannerisms, unrelenting boredom, paranoia, restlessness, inability to sit still, unwarranted passion, and gnawing desire to get even higher, she has “stoner” captured to a T. The film was released on 4/20 of this past year, but I didn’t discover it until watching the trailers that preceded a very much unrecommended Macaulay Culkin film, Sex and Breakfast. Described as, “Like Harold and Kumar, except with one chick trying to get to the beach,” Anna Faris’ performance, alongside random stars like The OC’s Adam Brody, is sure to make your full stomach sore. I mean, just look at this face:

Surrriously, how can you not love it?

Super High Me, starring Doug Benson, originally started out as a joke about what it would be like to imitate Morgan Spurlock’s film Super Size Me, but to smoke pot instead of eating McDonald’s. After a film producer saw one his performances and heard the bit, he suggested that they actually make such a movie.

The movie follows Benson as he first quits smoking pot for 30 days, gets medical evaluations, performs live, learns about the fight for medical marijuana, and of course…smokes pot. One of the highlights of the film is the cameos by stars of the underground comedy world such as Bob Odenkirk, Patton Oswalt, and Brian Poesehn. Although their spots are brief, they provide a much needed change of pace throughout the film. But even when Benson is by himself, he remains enjoyable to watch where many other stand-up comedians might be dull after 94 minutes.

While searching for Doug Benson stand-up clips recently, I came across an interview from a show called 420 Tube. I don’t think that I would watch this show if they had interviewed anyone else since it’s basically just watching people get stoned, but it’s worth checking out if you have some time to kill…or if your high.
