So, I finally got around to buying Super Mario Galaxy (yes, I know… two years late). $58AU at Big W’s Toy Sale this week, price matched at EB Games and then a $20AU voucher meant I only paid $38AU for it though. So I’m quite happy with that deal.

But since I’ve been spending more time with it recently, I must say I’m beginning to wish I bought it earlier. Sure, for the most part the game is definitely as easy as I remember it. But at least its fun easy, I have a few minor complaints about it still. Such as the damned camera, which they are still to perfect. I’m crossing my fingers for Galaxy 2.

Anyway, one of the major reasons I’m in love with this game is the fact that I feel like its a learning process. But to the usual extent, you know when a game presents you with a situation and then later in the game you encounter it again with some alterations (maybe in the scenario’s layout or the difficulty) but in Galaxy (and Mario games in general) I feel as though I’m being tested over the span of the games. A few times I found myself going, “Oh, that reminds me of something in Mario 64″ or “I did something similar to this in Mario Sunshine.” And I feel that is part of the charm that appeals to me about Mario games. And I love it.

Visually, musically, gameplay, the game impresses on all levels and I never got a chance to truly enjoy it to this degree when I played it a few years ago.

Amazon.co.uk Review
Six years. Six long years we’ve had to wait for a new Mario game, and finally it’s here. And even considering the ridiculously unfair expectations,Super Mario Sunshine is almost entirely as good as you’d hope and expect.

The premise of the game is that Mario’s tropical holiday is ruined when he’s stitched up by an evil look-alike for daubing graffiti all over the island. Rather conveniently, there’s a water pump waiting for him to use, which not only washes away the mess but also doubles as a handy jet pack. The jet pack aspect means that whenever you fall off something you have the chance to immediately recover. This built-in safety net means the game can afford to be far more ambitious in its level design than ever before, with massive levels filled with trampolines, tightropes, water-powered windmills, huge coral reefs, and mountains and mountains of platforms.

The whole thing looks amazing, too, with the most realistic water ever seen in a video game, and a near-infinite draw distance. On top of all this are rideable, fruit-juice-spewing Yoshis, extra water nozzles, super-hardcore platform levels where Shadow Mario nicks your jet pack, and goop-generating bosses who seem to live to make Princess Peach’s laundry a nightmare.

After the sweet but rather short pleasures of Luigi’s Mansion and Pikmin, you need have no fear that Mario Sunshine is of a similarly brief nature. There are a total of 120 shines to collect–the same number of stars as inSuper Mario 64–and the game world is at least as large and far more interactive. This is without question the best game on the GameCube yet. That may be no more than you’d expect from a Mario game, but it’s certainly more than most of us mere mortals deserve. –David Jenkins

Manufacturer’s Description
No one messes with Mario’s vacation! Super Mario Sunshine for the Nintendo GameCube is Mario’s biggest, most amazing adventure ever. When Mario, Peach, and an entourage of Peach’s loyal Toad friends set out for a tropical vacation on lovely Dolphin Island, they’re in store for much more than a relaxing holiday. A mustachioed maniac has mucked up the entire island, and Mario is accused of committing the crime. Armed with a high-tech water cannon called FLUDD (Flash Liquidizer Ultra Dousing Device), Mario sets out to clean the island, clear his name, and solve the mystery of the villainous vandal.

Super Mario Sunshine sparkles with the same spot-on play control that’s made Mario the main man in the vid biz for so many years. Mario has a gang of moves at his disposal, from his trusty jumping maneuvers to all-new FLUDD techniques. Mario can use FLUDD to clean up sludge pools, attack enemies, hover through the air, and more. Special nozzle attachments scattered throughout the island provide even more ways for FLUDD to come in handy.

Like in Super Mario 64, Mario has many things to accomplish in each area of Dolphin Island. Every time Mario completes a task, he is rewarded with a Shine Sprite. Mario’s missions include battling giant Piranha Plants, navigating treacherous platform challenges, solving mysteries, and collecting Blue Coins. As Mario collects Shine Sprites, new areas of Isle Delfino are unlocked. This is Mario’s biggest challenge ever!

Luckily, Mario isn’t alone. Princess Peach and her entourage of Toads aren’t much help, but the island’s natural population of Yoshis sure are! Mario can ride multicolored Yoshis throughout the island, using their tongue-slurping strength to accomplish various tasks. Other familiar characters make cameos throughout the game, along with a wide variety of all-new characters. Powered by Nintendo GameCube, Super Mario Sunshine is a must-play. Classic Mario action, exciting new moves, and surprises galore will keep you clutching your controller for months to come.

This game is one of my all-time favorites. It’s fast, fun, visually stunning, appropriate for any age, and great to play alone or with friends. I simply can’t say enough about the colorful, whimsical appearance of this game, not to mention the endlessly entertaining gameplay. I bought this game years ago, and I still can’t put it down.

A Good Investment
I must admit, I was rather hesitant to by this game because of all the bad talk about it. How it was nothing like Super Mario 64 and that the camera was absolutely horrible. Granted it isn’t a mirror image of Super Mario 64, I see many resemblances. It’s kind of disappointing that they took out the long jump, but I really see no need for it. I also read somewhere that you were very limited to what you could at a given time in this game, but I have to disagree. You can go after a wide array of shines (shines serve the same purpose as the stars in Super Mario 64) at any given time. Also, I’d have to say that the camera is amazing in this game. It’s like the camera in a third person shooter, only much better. I’d say that it’s even better than the camera in Super Mario 64. People were also saying that the voice acting was horrible; I wouldn’t say it’s horrible, but I somewhat dislike sitting through cut-scenes. I’m 18, soon to be 19 (in less than a month), and I love this game. I would recommend this game to people of all ages. It’s fun, and it’s classic.

Another Mario review, and this one might just be the most underrated game in the series…

Yes, this gem of a game for the GameCube – Super Mario Sunshine. In my opinion, it’s very overlooked and underrated by even the most hardcore of Mario gamers. (Though the game did sell 5.5 million copies…) It is bright and colorful, but best of all, it has that classic Mario platforming style – with a twist. Instead of just running and jumping around various levels, you have to use your water pack (FLUDD) to reach new heights, obtain certain objects and overcome obstacles. Along the way, you must clean up Isle Delfino where a mysterious Mario-like entity has vandalized every inch of the once-beautiful tourist trap. It’s been compared to Super Mario 64, and often these comparisons rule in favor of the genre-defining N64 classic. Not to say Mario 64 is bad, bu it’s really too bad that a game this good is overlooked. Come on, it’s a freaking Mario game! One of my favorites, without a doubt. I give this game a 9/10 because even though it is wonderful and every self-respecting Nintendo geek should get the chance to play it, Super Mario Galaxy remains the better game. (I still love you Sunshine!)

And as a bonus, here’s a recent review of the game done by MN12BIRD:

On the old Nintendo.com website (which I still think it superior to the current one since it didn’t completely abandon important parts of Nintendo’s history such as the NES and Game Boy in favor of the Wii and DS), there was a developer interview of Super Mario Sunshine, one of my favorite games for the GameCube. I found the first page on Wayback Machine, and the rest on a website called GameCubicle (clever word play for the win.)

I made up a page for it, so you can read the entire interview here: http://blognintendo.wordpress.com/super-mario-sunshine-dev-interview/

Thanks to Wayback Machine and GameCubicle for this one!

The objective of Super Mario Galaxy is to collect 120 Stars and 7 Grand Stars, and beat Bowser who has taken Princess Peach to the center of the Universe. Gain trust of the Lumas and use your Star Power to beat Bowser and his minions.

This game was made last year 2007. The thing that sticks out most in the game is the outer space because that is mostly what is on the screen. The thing that sticks out 2nd most is well… Mario! I think this game is easy-medium. I’m saying this because I beat this game in about 1 month. I also say this because I usually say that I’m like the best video game player ever but I think anyone can do this. I think this game is different from other Mario Games because in other games when you jump you sometimes don’t have anything to make yourself go even higher except for in Super Mario Sunshine. In this game you always have Star Power to make yourself go even higher! It is also different from other games because this is an easy game for me (there are not so many easy games in the world for me).

My Tips:

1. Spin in the air to go higher if you’re trying to reach something very high in the air.

2. When you’re trying to beat Bowser part one in the fountain dome make sure when he jumps you’re on a blue bulb, when he starts coming down run in any direction except for up or down.

My Rating:

In 1981 this is how Mario looked. The game was called Donkey Kong and Donkey Kong Jr. In this stag

In 1981 this is how Mario looked. The game was called Donkey Kong and Donkey Kong Jr. In this stage, Mario was then called Jumpman.

Mario looked like this in a game called Super Mario Bros. in 1985. Mario now look’s way different than this Mario. Mario is supposed to have blue overalls and a red shirt!

Super Mario Bros. 2 is the game that had this Mario in 1988. Now Mario is called Mario. Also he look’s the correct way.
In a game called Super Mario Bros. 3 Mario looked like he was about to faint. Can you make up your mind on what your going to wear Mario?!? This was in 1989.

There are 2 games for this Mario. They are Super Mario World and Super Mario All Stars. This was in 1991 and 1993.
Mario in Super Mario 64 look’s like this. I know because I have this game. This was in 1996.
This is Mario umm… and Yoshi in Super Mario Sunshine. Okay and F.L.U.D.D. This was made in 2002.

This is Mario in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. This is also Mario right now. One thing I can say is that he look’s very realistic.

The objective of Super Mario Sunshine is to gather the Shine Sprites that have fled from the Shine G

The objective of Super Mario Sunshine is to gather the Shine Sprites that have fled from the Shine Gate. You must clean up the icky Isle Delfino, with your new partner F.L.U.U.D., Bowser and your other enemies are the real cause of the goo (it is really paint) all over Isle Delfino which is also the cause of the Shine Sprites leaving. One more thing, beat Bowser and all the other icky monsters that are invading Isle Delfino.

This game does not look old or new. Because it was made in 2002, is the reason. Mario, however is 50 years old. This game is alot different from other Mario games because you have new friends and, of course, new foes. It is also different because some of the Boss Charcters are just bigger forms of your foes. I would say the difficulty level of this game is very very hard. I think that because whenever you walk in the paint, you slide around if you are on a slope. If your not on a slope Mario gets hurt every 3 seconds that you are in the goop. If you get stuck in the goop, Mario gets out of control and its hard to get out. Then, there are also enemies that come out of the goop that tackle you.The start of the game.

Your plain lands on Delfino Airstrip and it is covered in goop.Toadsworth commands you to find something to clean this mess up.Then you meet a robot named F.L.U.D.D, you go through instuctions on how to shoot water in varios ways. Now there is a giant goop monster.Once you defeat it you obtain an object called a shine sprite. But who caused the mess? The Piantas are blaming you! But why? The Pianta Police command you to clean up the whole entire Island.Delfino Airstrip veiw from plaine.

Here are my tips:
1. When you are trying to beat the Goop Monster before you enter a level, always shoot water into its mouth from a rooftop so you don’t get hurt by the monsters that come out of the goop.

2. Hold down the R button very lightly to shoot water while running so you can get away from one enemie, while shooting another.

Delfino Plaza is the main town which contains the most shine sprites. Here you can teleport to different parts of the island. Shine sprites are scattered around. At first you fight a goop monster and chase a person called Shadow Mario(Koopa Kid). This is who causes the messes.

Bianco Hills

View of Bianco Hills from above.Shine Sprite1(big mess) Shine Sprite2(on big widmill)Shine Sprite3(Far to the right over lake near cliff ledge)Shine Sprite4(collect 8 red coins)Shine Sprite5(Far left of widmill in deep creavase)Shine Sprite6(behind widmill)Shine Sprite7(wherever Shadow Mario is defeated)Shine Sprite8(collect 8 red coins)Ricco Harbor

Remember that damn running man in Ocarina of Time? The one who challenges you to a race and then beats you by one second every damn time!? And now remember Il Piantissimo, the weird guy dressed as a Pianta who’d race you through various stages in Super Mario Sunshine? Ever wonder what the crap that guy’s deal was? I know I did.

After extracting the models from the game, we can finallly find out, by removing his mask! And it seems a familiar face is underneath…

Il Piantissimo is the running man! I now have a newfound hatred for him and everything he stands for. So if you happen to find yourself playing Mario Sunshine (which you should, it’s fantastic. Don’t be a sheep), jump on his head for me.

Rating: 10 Out of 10

This is a very good game with no problems. Well there are some. It has great sound, graphics, and gameplay. It is the best Mario game since Mario 64. You arrive on an island and there is a fake Mario running around and he is framing you. He then later on kidnaps Peach. Yes again she is kidnapped! Now its up to you to stop him.

What’s Next For? is a monthly feature here at O Wiily?

In these articles we will analyse long-running, successful franchises, giving a backstory and speculating as to where the franchise will take its next steps.

This week, it’s Mario. The world-famous plumber has been a staple in the videogame industry. The benchmark that all platformers must now live up to and are now compared to.

Let’s see how Mario came to carry the flag for Nintendo.

–Rory–

He’s been to the final frontier, so what’s left for everyone’s favourite plumber? Well before we start to speculate, let’s take a look at what made Mario the worldwide phenomenon he is today.

Dont worry Donkey your time will come

Mario first leapt onto our TV sets in 1981 as the main character in the original Donkey Kong game. However, he was named Jumpman and was a Carpenter. The game was simple enough and involved Jumpman (Mario) jumping (never would have guessed…) over barrels that Donkey Kong is throwing at him. The reason you are doing this? Well Donkey Kong has kidnapped Pauline (Mario’s love interest). This was one of the first games to use cutscenes (dont go thinking CGI epics, though) to progress through the story.

Thats one giant leap for mankind!

4 years down the line and Mario has got his own game- Super Mario Brothers! The game that is responsible for the NES’s success. In this game, Mario must work his way through the 8 worlds of the Mushroom Kingdom to save Princess Peach from the evil Bowser- King of the Koopas. In multiplayer mode, Mario’s brother Luigi aids him. To date this game has sold over 40 million copies making it the best selling game of all time! Phenomenol.

Thats a long way down...

11 years on from Super Mario Bros and here we are again with another revolutionary Mario outing. What game you ask? Well Super Mario 64 obviously. This was the first ever Mario game to be in 3D. It was hailed as being as revolutionary as the game we last discussed, Super Mario Bros. The game was more than a great Mario game; it was a Landmark in 3D gaming. Primarily because of the dynamic camera system and analog control. The story is of typical Mario fare. Mario is invited to Peach’s castle, only to find her captured by Bowser. Mario must then proceed to collect stars which unlock new levels of the castle. When you have gained enough stars you will gain access to Bowser and can free Peach!

Mario and Sunshine yep it all there

6 years on. 6 long years of torment. 6 years with no 3D Mario. Enter Super Mario Sunshine! Released in 2002 for the GameCube it shows Mario in an entierly new light (pardon the pun). He now has new moves and new gadgets to help him. Not to mention the most stunning water effects of its generation. The basic plot goes something like this: whilst on Vacation on Isle Delfino, the island gets graffitied by Shadow Mario. This leaves Mario to take the blame and as a consequence, he must clean up the island. Peach then gets kidnapped by Shadow Mario who is later revealed to be Bowser Jr. Bowser Jr takes Peach to Bowser, Mario then continues to rescue Peach and they continue their holiday together. The game has sold over 5.5 million copies- a respectable amount even today.

gotta love those pants

2007 is the year. Mario is going where no plumber has gone before…. Space. Super Mario Galaxy is the latest platformer to feature Mario and it’s one of his greatest adventures ever. The game has sold 6.10 million copies worldwide. This makes it the best selling stand alone Wii game. I wont go into too much detail incase you are planning to play the game but here is a basic plot outline. In his latest adventure Mario is on a quest to save Princess Peach from his nemesis Bowser. Mario must collect stars in order to unlock more galaxies and gain access to more stars. Levels and stages are in the form of galaxies and planets. Mario gets some exciting new power ups in the game.

So we have seen where he’s been but where is the most famous plumber in the world going next? What is there left for a man who has been into the final frontier? I personally think that the next Mario outing should be back in his homeland, the Mushroom Kingdom. I think a fully 3D Mario set in the Mushroom kingdom would be amazing. Nintendo could possibly introduce some new characters to add something fresh to the series. Another idea would be to mabye bring back some old characters that only hardcore fans will appreciate. This way both new and old Nintendo fans will have something to be excited about. I don’t think that changing the formula too much would work though because it’s the same Mario formula that we have known and loved for years that keeps us playing the games. Hopefully we will be playing them for years to come.

been recovering from the opening week of students crawling around campus and feel the need to post, but unsure what about. So after de-stressing with some good old fashioned video gaming I thought, hey, why not. It makes good sense as libraries are both going green and gaming, that I thought I’d mention a couple of games I’ve come across that are fun and have a green theme. These two are blasts from the past, and surely there are others dealing with greenness, but these two immediately come to mind and are really distracting.

Super Mario Sunshine came out way back when the Gamecube was the hot new console. It’s probably my favorite Mario Bros. game ever, as there’s so much to do while playing. The rundown is that Mario and Co. are taking a well-deserved rest from their Bowser beatdowns and taking a fun old fashioned family vacation to the tropical delfino island. Trouble is, evil is mucking about. Muck is the operative word, as the island is plagued with it, from graffiti on buildings to globs of the stuff polluting the waters surrounding the island. Predictably, the cleanup falls upon Mario’s shoulders, and with a high-powered squirt/hover cannon, cleaning time has never been more cathartic. Honestly, the game is worth playing just for the colorful design. Even the dayglo, psychedelic goo vomited throughout the game is worthy of one’s own drool being allowed to flow during game-play. It’s way challenging, fun, and a must have for environmentally conscious gaming.

The second game I have to mention is the lovably bizarre Munch’s Oddysee from the the makers of the lamentably discontinued or postponed Oddworld series games. The story doesn’t revolve around the issue of pollution and is eradication per se, but rather how the main characters, Abe and Munch, continually attempt to save their respective species and Oddworld itself from the enslaving, polluting, corporate baddies. Like all Oddworld games, the storyline is well-conceived and gameplay somewhat linear, but the developers manage to do everything right…it’s one of the most cinematic video game series I’ve ever experienced. It’s a bit darker than Super Mario Sunshine, as its socially conscious theme is bleak to say the best, but mosty importantly, aside from the fun gameplay it makes the player think.

I’m sure I’ll think of more, but these two are classics in my opinion on a number of fronts. If you want to offer fun games with an environmental message, these are two to consider.

Gaming site Kotaku has brought to light some new details about the upcoming Wii title SPRay which promises to play like a Super Mario Sunshine and Zelda love child.

Tecmo’s SPRay — oddly capped that way due to the game’s protagonist, known as Spirited Prince Ray — may serve as an adequate substitute for Wii gamers waiting for Nintendo’s Mario and Zelda teams to wrap up their next projects. SPRay is not unlike a Zelda-style adventure and comparisons to Mario Sunshine will likely be inevitable, as the game features a liquid spraying mechanic that’s not too dissimilar from that GameCube non-classic.

Ray, here to save the world from an evil something or other that’s covering his kingdom with a black goo, has a pair of familiars that will help him in his fight against, you know, evil. One, a portly bat-winged devil sprays a cleansing orange slime and a sticky green goo. The other, an angelic wisp, sprays water and ice that puts out fires and lays down ice tracks.

The combination of all these things is what gives SPRay its uniqueness.

As you can probably suspect, SPRay takes advantage of the Wii’s remote for directing Ray’s flow of slop. He’ll need to lay down the sticky green stuff to stick to walls (or have other objects stick to walls), stuff that’s in a more limited supply. As Ray and his liquidy partners level up, the player will have access to more abilities, giving it a Zelda-like adventure feel.

Like that series’ star, Link, Ray also has a sword. He’ll use it in concert with the liquid attacks to take out foes, something that should add variety to battling hordes of enemies.

The game looks to have epic boss battles that take advantage of your progressive abilities, something that will surely further comparisons between SPRay and The Legend of Zelda. While the visual design on some of these creatures may not hold up as well to what Nintendo’s team has been capable of, we were surprised at how good some of them looked in motion.

The game is due out by the holidays.

What do you think? Is this one a dud or could it ultimately be some sort of cult classic or sleeper hit? Sound off in our comments section!

Developer Eko software is working on a new Wii title that is supposedly influenced by arguably one of the GameCube’s best platformers: Super Mario Sunshine but takes place in a Zelda-inspired world.

Developed by Eko Software and published by Tecmo, SPRay sees Players controlling a spirited Prince named Ray with the power to use liquids to alter the gaming world. SPRay must save his village from an evil Queen who has returned from being banished to capture and enslave the local villagers.”“After Ray dons a magical crown which summons two liquid spraying spirits, he must defeat the Queen and her minions – known as anti-matter soldiers. Players will use the “angelic” and “wicked” spirits to spray elements such as water, oil and goo on both enemies and surfaces to solve puzzles and defeat the evil Queen.

The games world involves platforming puzzles including the player spraying sticky goop to move boxes around to make platforms.

IGN explains the spraying aspect even further:

It gets its title from its primary game mechanic of spraying different fluids all over the game world. These fluids include water, anti-matter, and, uh, vomit. Yep, vomit. You play as a member of royalty whose crown contains two spirits: one dark, one light. The dark spirit is the one who can’t keep his lunch down. You and your spirits will spray stuff on things in order to solve puzzles. Water will obviously extinguish fire. Vomit? Oh, it can reveal invisible paths. If you happen upon a gorge, just throw up into it and see if there’s a hidden walkway. The elements you spray are persistent, so if you barfed all over a wall your bile will still be there when you pass by again.
