Recently I found out that Gigabits LAN center in Orlando shut down last October. It’s a sad loss for not only the regulars but also one of Central Florida’s gaming communities.

The store was nestled in the shopping plaza adjacent to my alma matter of the University of Central Florida. While the plaza itself was shabby the inside of the center was awash in neon backlight and the glimmer of computer screens. Most of the center was dedicated to PC gaming, but there were also consoles available in the back.

Gigabits was best known for its Super Smash Brothers tournaments. Some tournaments had over 100 competitors from all over Florida and lasted until the morning hours. Not bad for a store that’s barely larger than a GameStop.

I wasn’t a regular, but Gigabits was the subject of my first published news story when I covered a Brawl tournament there. One person did tell me that I worked for a “jobber paper” but for the most part the players and owners were friendly and open to questions. And when the LAN center in my native Port St. Lucie started to host tournaments they took advice from Gigabits on rules and management.

Gigabits also branched out and hosted other tournaments. Most of them were for PC games or First Person Shooters, but it did host a Soul Calibur IV tournament back when it came out. That was my first fighting game tournament, where I just had a standard Xbox 360 pad and a Hilde with no knowledge of her broken ring-out combo. I finished 1-2, which was what I expected from my first outing.

With arcades dead everywhere except a few cities, LAN centers have the ability to connect players beyond Internet connections and ping settings. While most fighting game tournaments are held in hotels and convention centers, LAN centers can be a way for new players to play others without the intimidation of large events, or even just meet other players in the area. Operating a LAN center is a risky business since the owner is asking people to pay for something they could do in their own home, but the idea of a social outlet for people who are usually treated as shut-ins shouldn’t be ignored.

I’m not as interested in Smash as before but Gigabits was clearly a staple for Orlando players and will be missed. As of this post the management is trying to relocate to another center in the UCF/Full Sail area, though without the Gigabits name. Good luck to them in the future.

So sorry for the lack of update today. I was busy all day and then got back to my dorm at 8 and passed the fuck out. But I’m awake now, unfortunately, so I thought I’d grace you with a quickie update.

In between a heated roun of one of the greatest games I think has ever been made, Super Smash Brothers Brawl…

credit to ribbledude

…I entered a discussion about the Harry Potter movies. I really enjoyed the books, and in a way, I grew with the characters in the series, since I started reading as a child and finished my senior year of high school (i think). And obviously, J.K. Rowling is a brilliant writer, so unless you don’t like the subject matter, it’s really hard not to get hooked on these books.

The movies, however, are a completely different story. Here is a picture to illustrate my thoughts EXACTLY on what I disliked the most about the movies:

credit to kellywormtongue

I think Dumbledore is a magnificent character, comparable only to the great Gandalf from my personal favorite story of all freaking time, The Lord of the Rings. As written, Dumbledore is a soft-spoken, intelligent, and talented wizard who (almost) everyone admires and respects. He is authoritative without raising his voice, and everyone follows his rules.

I think Richard Harris, the man who was first cast as Dumbledore and portrayed him in the first two movies until his death, was a perfect choice. He was wizened and understated, but even as a man, Richard Harris was so well regarded by the entire world that it translated into his portrayal of Dumbledore seamlessly. When he passed away in 2002 (sidenote: his birthday is October 1st, which is one day before mine ^_^), I realized that it was not only the death of an amazing actor, but the death of the Harry Potter movies as we knew it.

Don’t get me wrong, I think Michael Gambon is a superb actor. His roles in The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou and Ali G in da House were humorous as a mother fucker. I just strongly and firmly believe that Michael Gambon is the WRONG actor to portray Albus Dumbledore. His portrayal is the antithesis of everything Richard Harris’s was. So for me, it almost ruined the movies for me. What sealed the deal was the choice of direction for the latter movies and the fact that they kept cutting important shit and adding ridiculous shit. I gave up on the Harry Potter movies and stuck with my tried and true LOTR Extended Edition box set, which I watched, in its entirety, once a week for…well, a few years.

So that leads me to my final bit of goodness: this great video titled, “We Love the Internet,” that I found while Stumbling. It was created by an artist with a website titled Weebl. In this video, he mentions something about “stories about Gandal shagging Optimus Prime,” and for some reason, it made my fucking day. So, without further ado, a still of Gandalf in bed with Optimus Prime. Please to enjoy.

Take care!

OK, so perhaps the title was a little inaccurate, as this particular entry was written sitting in the Thomas Alleyne’s Sixth Form Common room, whilst watching a friend compete in a Super Smash Bros tournament against a human and several artificial opponents. It’s a somewhat strange situation, and one that is repeated every Thursday. There is, in the sixth form, a large contingent of what my father would term ‘Game-Playing Whelks’, who gather in their frees to give each other a good whacking on the Wii, all with the best of intentions. Often, the common room is filled with laughter from the ‘Wii corner’ and it is infinitely more popular than the Xbox, perhaps due to the community spirit that i have discussed before. The game itself is a rather frenetic battle of four, and causes much consternation, especially in the high stakes games that spring up from time to time, grudge matches if you will. Each player has a favourite character, in the case of Mr James, who I am watching now, it is Pit, the angelic messenger with a double bladed sword. Currently Mr James is having a mixed luck, some victories, and some losses, and is fighting on a very pretty stage, bedecked with rainbows and smiling trees. Perhaps one of the nicest places to have a quick ruckus. As I look up, I find that the scene has changed and we are now in a volcanic scene, it’s skies shattered by volcanic eruptions. Others have joined us now and we have a four human player game, two of the best are now fighting. Mr James stands little chance. His loss will serve only to reinforce the ultimate victory of the Champions. And that is the beauty of the Wii.

     1) Head to your local GameStop and pick up Super Smash Bros. Brawl.
2) Grab 3 friends and pop the game into your Wii. If you’re a normal person, you’ll be hooked in less than 10 minutes!

Super Smash Bros. Brawl can be considered Nintendo’s crowning glory. This game brings together tons of characters from different worlds for an exciting, yet remarkably accessible, all-out brawl. With a fully-loaded single-player mode, a multiplayer mode that will have you up until 4 AM playing with your friends, and more hidden secrets to unlock than you can imagine, Super Smash Bros. Brawl is a game that belongs in every serious (and casual) gamer’s library.

The Smash Bros. franchise caught on, by and large, because of it’s multiplayer mode. The multiplayer is, for all intents and purposes, what players have come to expect from the Smash Bros. franchise. Up to 4 players battle on a wide variety of stages, either with a set number of lives or a time limit. The objective? Simply knock your opponent outside of the boundaries of the stage using your characters standard attacks and special moves. Sound easy? It is! The control scheme (which utilizes only TWO attack buttons) is structured so that even the most casual of gamers can get in on the action. For the veteran, there is also a large amount of strategy that can go into each match, including using to your advantage the features of the stage, the items, and your chosen character’s various special moves.

In Super Smash Bros. for the N64, a substantial single-player mode was definitely lacking. Melee tried to fix this problem, but there was still much to be desired. Brawl, however, provides a great new single-player story mode called The Subspace Emissary. Using each different character from their respective game, you play through a series of side (and sometimes vertical) –scrolling levels that ultimately end with 32 characters uniting to take down the final boss. Depending on how much time you take to find all the hidden rooms and trophies, you could be looking at a 25+ hour effort.

To top it all off, one of the best additions in Super Smash Bros. Brawl is the Vault. The Vault is a wall of small windows, each of which contains a prize of some sort. You earn this prize when the task for that window is satisfied. This mode gives Brawl LOTS of replay value. Shortly after Super Smash Bros. Brawl was released on March 8, 2008, I purchased my copy of the game. As of this posting (July 20, 2009), I still have not unlocked everything the game has to offer. This should give you an idea how much extra material is jam-packed into Super Smash Bros. Brawl.

Combining one of the best multiplayer experiences on the market with a substantial single-player adventure and several additional single/partner mini-games, Super Smash Bros. Brawl is one of the finest options available on the Wii, in addition to one that will keep you busy for a long, long time.

Final Verdict: 9 out of 10

I’ve just had the BIGGEST urge ever to play Super Smash Brothers. However, problem. I’ve only got the OLD, OLDDDD one, like, yes the one for N64 on my Wii, and I have however got Melee, but I kinda, misplaced my memory cards. Meaning that I can’t be the ultimate character that is Marth.

eeee, he's so amazing.

But regardless of loving Marth and having him as my favourite character, SHOW, show, SHOW ME YOUR MOVES, the legend that is Captain Falcon is starting to take over :3 Yes yes, it is infact a man IN A SPANDEX SUIT *insert datass face here* (for all you peopllz who don’t kwow what DATASSface is, i’ll add it on later) but he’s just so awesome. I can’t get over it. I mean yes, in the original, ORIGINAL game, on the classic N64, I couldn’t be Marth. But being the child that I was am, I always chose Pikachu. And yes, lets face it, in those days, he did pretty much suck generic nintendo balls.

But then when it came to Melee, ah my prayers were answered. Pikachu became so much stronger :3 and and and! Hello Pichu! Hehe, it made me laugh so much, when Pichu would just like, end up killing itself cause of the thunder shock =D Ahhh, such, SUCH good times. But after playing it for an obsessive amount of hours, it set me up in an EPIC brawl against Marth. And dare I say, once he was unlocked, Pikachu never got clicked on again, I sorta. Became, yes. Okay. The word you were waiting for.. Obsessed with Marth.

dat ass

That face is literally, my Super Smash Brothers GAMER FACE. Oh yes. You now know EXACTLY what I look like when I play. Feel privilidged huh? :3 Anyway! I still wanna play. But now I’m thinking. I NEED BRAWL. I MEAN FOR GOD SAKE I’M SO BEHIND. Yes, I am the owner of a nintendo wii *insert streamers and a backflipping dog* but I have nothing on it. I’m too poor to buy games D: Someone buy me one? :3 LOL. But no seriously. Brawl looks amazing. Even though, the one thing I have to say, is that I REFUSE, to use the Wii controller. As Arby and The Cheif say “it’s like fucking lego” and I love my “lego” controller.

Pah, when I get Brawl, I’m setting up my Wii network thingy. Then if you think you’re a good brawl. Find me yeah?

The Wife:

We’re only one episode away from the season finale of Reaper (and the series finale, most likely), so I was happy to see an episode that focused so heavily on steering the masterplot, with very little distraction from a meaningless subplot. In fact, let’s just talk about that subplot now to get it out of the way. Nina sets Sock up with one of her demon friends, but Sock doesn’t like Maggie because she’s not as hot as Nina. (Although, let’s face it, she is a very pretty girl who just prefers to be a tomboy.) So Maggie tells Sock she can look like anything he wants, and he agrees to go out with her again if she’ll change into his dream girl. Thus, he spends time making a Frankensteiny collage of lady parts he likes and hands it to Maggie, who agrees to show up for their next date looking like his dream girl. Only when she shows up, she’s just herself, all to teach Sock a lesson that he doesn’t really learn and won’t grow from at all. It was lame, yes, but I liked the actress who played Maggie, Catherine Reitman (daughter of Ivan), who also had a bright cameo on the abysmal Kath & Kim as the high school friend Kim kinda goes gay for. (According to IMDB, she’s also a bridesmaid in I Love You, Man, but I was probably too distracted by those adorable yellow J. Crew dresses to notice who was wearing them.)

Taking a dig at the soullessness of corporate America, The Devil sets Sam up with a job at one of his companies. But, you see, the company doesn’t actually make or do anything – it’s just a shell corporation from which The Devil harvests souls by encouraging them to do evil things. Sam fits right in when he accidentally shoves a rival out the window after this architect’s design tanks because of Sam’s suggestion at a pitch meeting. (That suggestion, by the way, was to do nothing.) Meanwhile, The Devil shows Sam around the company, taking him all the way up to the 75th floor, from which demons in The Devil’s employ have a sort of soul stock market, tracking the evil things down by the employees on lower floors and delighting when one does something, like, say, throwing another out a window, the Hellish equivalent of a big Wall Street sale.

Welcome to the 75th floor, buying and trading sin 24/7.

The Devil also points out a portal to Hell on the 75th floor, which is only accessible by keycard. Immediately, Sam thinks this would be a great way to get to his dad, who sent him a text earlier stating that he got what he needed to get Sam out of his contract, but was stuck in the 3rd circle. Humans can’t go through Hell portals, but Demons can, so Sam asks Tony to go, only now that he has Lil’ Stevi, he can’t leave her with a babysitter for that long. After receiving a promotion from his boss for offing a coworker and getting access to the 75th floor, Sam gets Nina to go to Hell for him and retrieve the info from Mr. Oliver. She’s hesitant to go, fearing that a trip to Hell will bring back all those nasty habits she’s been trying to quit, but she agrees to go as long as she doesn’t have to stay more than 24 hours. Sam et al go on a recon mission to get Nina into that Hell portal, and all goes well . . . until Sam’s boss realizes that Sam didn’t push Phil out the window at all, that it was merely an accident Sam took credit for. This is enough to get Sam fired, meaning he loses his key card to get to the 75th floor, leaving Nina trapped in Hell.

The gang stages a plan to steal a keycard from Sam’s boss by breaking into his gym locker while Sock distracts him in the sauna, a plan which goes a little more smoothly than expected when they’re able to convince a janitor to pop open the lock with a skeleton key, rather than wait out Ben’s time-tested “trying every combination of numbers starting with 000″ method. As the gang heads up to the 75th floor, they’re only a few minutes ahead of Sam’s boss, who realizes when he gets in the next elevator up that he doesn’t have his keycard. Instead of merely standing around, he turns into his demon self and tears through the top of the elevator carrel before shimmying his way up the shaft via the cables. Nina emerges from the Hell portal just in time, with bossman clawing his way through the steel doors of the elevator shaft on the 75th floor, and Sam begs her to fly him and Ben out of there . . . only to find out when they arrive home safely that the paper Nina imported from Hell is blank. After some thought, Nina realizes the paper needs to be consumed in flames to be read, so she tosses it on the outdoor grill where it reveals an ancient demon text, one the gang will have to translate in order to find out what kind of contest Sam will challenge The Devil to in the season finale.

Contests I think Sam could win:

a drinking contest (maybe; I bet The Devil can hold his liquor pretty well)

a laziness contest (although, sloth is a sin, so maybe The Devil would win that anyway, even if Sam won outright)

a skateboarding contest

a Hybrid car race

a paintball tournament

a Super Smash Brothers tournament

a soul-catching contest, which would be pretty neat, actually, if Sam could beat The Devil at the job he reluctantly does and hates doing

Speaking of which, I did not miss the soul-catching element of the show at all this week as the stuff with the masterplot was rather satisfying – way more well-done than in “No Reaper Left Behind.”

Other amusing things:

Nina and Ben’s lengthy discussion of how Ben will pamper Nina when she returns from Hell, which quickly turns into a list of Ben’s various cleanliness hangups. “Okay, baby. We can squat in the shower together.”

“I change three times a day, kiddo. This is my afternoon suit.” – The Devil

And suddenly, I want to see a fierce-off suit fashion show between The Devil and Barney Stinson, mashed up to “The Devil Went Down to Georgia” by the Charlie Daniels Band. This must already exist on the internet, no? If it doesn’t, someone needs to make it.

Know who else looks good in a suit? Bret Harrison. Turtlenecks are really wrong on him, but he is deliciously cute in a suit and tie.

“I’ve done a lot of personal development and detoxing to stop craving the sounds of people in agony.” – Nina

The extent to which Ben dabbles in architecture: underwater hotels for 360-degree ocean views.

so as many of you know, our good friend/author here at Sick Damage PC Chris has been a professional gamer for many years now. now i know being a pro at anything isn’t easy. and of course one thing that comes with fame is definitely fans. but some people are just creepers i swear.

years ago a particular fanboy made a strange webpage dedicated to Chris and how he is better than everyone at Super Smash Brothers. the page is so poorly made and creepy that the shit this person says still makes me laugh even years from now. a link to this masterpiece of design can be found here:

MOST AWESOMENESS SMASH BROS PAGE EVAR!!11

here is one of the many articulated lines from the excerpt:

“Some people say PC Chris is gay but they don’t know what they’re are talking about. I once talked to PC Chris about this and he said that if you say that he’s gay u r actually gay urself so there u have it n00bs!!!!11!” -Some fanboy smasher from Europe.

so as a tip to you all, Chris doesn’t like weird fanboy shit. i don’t think anyone who’s a higher up in any community does. whether it be video games, the NBA, or Shoots & Ladders. if you’re pro, stay away from the scrubs.

kudos to this person for making such an amazing fan page! i want to see it updated on a regular basis!!

I celebrated my graduation from high school by doing things of which my parents would disapprove.

Rebellion is nothing unique to me. We see the light at the end of the tunnel—freedom! No more rules, no more curfew. No more questions about where we’re going, who will be there, or when we’ll be home. No more comments on our clothes, our language, our tardiness, or our laziness.

I was free to slouch into mediocrity and complacency, squandering my glorious potential on Super Smash Brothers and sleeping in.

My first act of defiance was to take myself right down to Icon Piercing, then occupying a couple of rooms above the Dairy Queen on West End Avenue, and get my cartilage pierced. What I hoped to accomplish by paying someone to punch a hole in my left ear is a mystery. I suppose it was self-expression, but I do wonder whether I would have done it if my parents had said, “Do what you want. We don’t care.”

To my delight, they were displeased. When my ear got infected and I had to go to the doctor for antibiotics, their displeasure only deepened. No matter, I was my own man, and they could take their disappointment in my appearance and my choices to someone who cared. I was so independent, free-thinking, and original, right?

When my grandfather saw my piercing, all he said was, “I wish that wasn’t there.”

My next step into adulthood was one my parents didn’t know about until last weekend. Certain acts of stupidity need eight to ten years to become funny. My friends Jonathan, Will, Bear, and I pooled our capital and bought an ‘88 Volkswagen Golf hatchback for $350.

This is perhaps the best decision I have made to date, other than following Jesus.

We first ripped out everything in the interior of the car that didn’t required tools. This included the center console and the glove compartment.

Why?

Because we could. It was our car.

We then found heavy sticks and a couple of metal pipes to store in the cargo space. At stoplights and intersections, we would pile out of the car, choose a weapon, and do as much damage to the paint job and body as we could before the light turned green. This was particularly fun to do in the middle of Green Hills.

The car had some mechanical problems. For example, if you shifted into reverse, you could only go backwards for a few seconds before the clutch popped the car out of gear.

We had no license, registration, or insurance for the Golf. This made every adventure a bit more exciting. Without a muffler, our little hatchback was louder than the biggest truck you’ve ever seen. I do not exaggerate when I say that you could hear it coming two miles away.

One time, the engine caught on fire in Jonathan’s driveway. We all stood around looking at it while Jonathan ran inside then ran back out carrying a single glass of water.

We all stood back as Christopher started it up. It ran better. The fire must have burned away all the impurities.

In between beating sessions and the nights when we would go for joy rides and run over people’s bagged leaves, For Sale signs, and trashcans, we parked the Golf in one of Lipscomb University’s parking lots.

One day, after we finished eating at the meat market where I choked on my beef stroganoff, we were approached by one of Lipscomb’s security guards. Back when I was in high school at David Lipscomb on the same campus, we parked across the street in a lot that belonged to Granny White Church of Christ. People kept breaking into the cars during school hours and stealing cd players. To remedy this problem, Lipscomb hired two of the oldest men in Nashville. Even after securing the protection of the Geezer Patrol, the break-ins continued. I wondered if the new security guards snoozing away in their Buick boats had anything to do with it. After school, they’d be asleep with their heads back. No doubt my car and my valuables were in capable hands.

I want to say it was Carl who tapped on the window of the Golf after lunch that day. He asked what we were doing.

“We just finished eating lunch.”

He asked if we had permission to park our car at Lipscomb.

We reassured him that we were both students at the high school.

He asked to see our IDs.

Yeah, about that, well, we didn’t have them on us. It was summer after all.

He asked Bear what his name was.

Bear turned to look at me then said to Carl, “Bill.”

“Bill what?”

Bear looked at me again. “Leftfoot. Bill Leftfoot.”

Of all the phony aliases he could have chosen, Bear picked the one that sounded least plausible. I did a Google search just now with “Bill Leftfoot.” No one in the history of humankind has ever been named Bill Leftfoot.

Carl the Geezer wasn’t buying it. He asked us to step out of the car.

Bear politely ignored him, put the car into reverse, put the car into reverse again, and a third time, and we finally drove out of the parking lot. I turned around to look at Carl in his white synthetic cowboy hat. Poor Carl. Even with the car’s mechanical problems, we would be in the next county by the time he got back into his car. No chance of a chase.

We didn’t have the car for very long after that. Parking on Lipscomb’s campus was asking for trouble, so we moved it three miles down the street to Belmont’s campus. We went to get it one day, and it was gone. Probably towed by some beastly man with no concept of how to love a car well.

My dad sells insurance, so everything mentioned above would have stressed him out if he’d known back then. Sometimes, oftentimes, what our parents don’t know can’t hurt them.

They never mean to smother us, only love and protect. They’re just human.

We have to teach them that the world needs piercings and Bill Leftfoot. The world needs the sound of a metal pipe putting a dent in an ‘88 Volkswagen Golf hatchback in the middle of a busy suburban shopping district. The world needs risk-takers and people who challenge our conceptions of what “normal,” “presentable,” and “appropriate” look like.

The world needs you to be yourself—to become more fully alive.

Just please don’t blame your arrest and jail sentence on me.

We’re all casual gamers in one way or another and it’s always intriguing to gaze into the more hardcore side of the fence to see how gamers break a title down to its core and build up an understanding over time of their selected game.

The two most popular tournament/competitive games on Stony Brook campus are Super Smash Bros. Melee (the old favorite) and the more recently released Street Fighter IV.

This piece asks a few of those gamers, who met one another mostly through the gaming club on campus, about how they approach competitive games.

I almost forgot and sent the kids to school today.

I’m torn between getting stuff done and doing something fun with the kids. So far, I’m alternating. We got up, had breakfast & cleaned up the kitchen (I got help from the kids, which is notable), then we watched The Electric Company. A couple more chores, then Imagination Movers. Another chore, and now the kids are playing the Wii.

I’ve decided to take today to get the chore charts up and running again. They’ve been rewritten (they were mysteriously erased a while back), and the girls have given themselves a star for each chore they’ve done so far today.

I’ve also considered renting a movie ($1 from redbox), taking the kids to the second-run movie theater ($1 each), or just staying home and saving money. We do have the new Muppet Show dvd from Christmas, and there are a number of new Wii games that haven’t seen much playing time yet. That is, if I can convince Big Sis to walk away from Super Smash Brothers.

I’m also trying to get caught up a bit with laundry. Little Sis has been working on staying dry at night, and there were a few accidents last week. So today I’m washing blankets and sleeping bags in addition to everyone’s clothes. Three loads down, a bunch more to go!

Okay…the kids have come upstairs to drag me down with them. Wii it is!

Wiish me luck!

(Okay, that was bad. Sorry.)

Good day, everyone. It’s been raining a lot over here today and i was bored,so i decided to start a small new project. i will be writing articles not specifically about smash in-game tactis or techniques, but about all the RL stuff,on a regular basis.Travelling abroad, meeting new people, housing, sleeping, the community, own experiences, thoughts and all that shit.

I remember my first little Smashfest i went to in 1999 (or was it in 2000?lolwut,can’t remember).
Me and my brother used to go to a friends place, where we played videogames most of the time,Goldeneye,MarioKart64,Perfect Dark,Mario Party,Quake 2,just to mention a few…We all had good times back then,it was really great Miss those good ol’ days with our n64 ..

One day,he wanted to show us this awesome new game his daddy bought him,so we went over and voilà,my first contact with smash.
Ever since,i fell in love with the Smash Bros series and we all sometimes played days and nights, having fun @ owning each other.Although we got better with time and started to not just to play in a simple way but developing some mindgames to a certain degree, there were no advanced techniques,it was all for the lulz and fun.

So,the first small Smashfest (and yes,it was small!4 people,lol).

After we had spent some weeks/months having fun with SSB64,New Years Eve arrived, and my friend was having some guests from France over at his place.Don’t ask me about them,i have no idea who they were, some random friends of his parents i guess.Their kid however somehow brought his n64 controller with him and we thought, yeah, awesome, let’s play some Smash.Since we didn’t speak any French back then,we couldn’t really communicate with that kid,so we just tried to give him some signs to play with us.
Assholish young boys we were back then,we started to play a FFA,but us three all going against that kid.
After he had lost all his Stocks,we went fighting each other, finishing the match with french kid being last.
What happened then?
We repeated the process.Kill the kid first, the rest doesn’t matter.
And that went on for about 4 or 5 hours.

He got pissed and stopped playing.

My family and me said goodbye to everyone after all the fireworks and food and all the New Years shit and left.I felt quite bad about that kid though.I’m serious.

So the next day,i came back (i wanted to play against him in a 1v1 and apologize somehow),but only to find out, that the french family had already left.

I never got to know his name.

PS: And still feel bad,lol.

So far I’ve been lucky and haven’t had a troll come stomping in to tell me to suck it up

So far I’ve been lucky and haven’t had a troll come stomping in to tell me to suck it up and play as male characters, but I thought it was worth thinking about why it’s so important to me.

It seems very simple. I’m a woman. I love women. I want to play as a woman. And yet, somehow, this is asking too much.

I look at games like Smash Brothers, or Mario Kart, and there’s a huge roster of characters to pick from, but they’re 90% male, and, as astute commenter Anneliese pointed out here,

The other (male) characters all have something to define and distinguish them from the crowd – a special feature no one else has that gives them a gameplay advantage. The female characters are defined by their femaleness.

And then in games where you don’t have a choice of character, you’re playing a guy. Since I’m very much a Nintendo gamer, in one-player games, I’m a guy…basically always. I’m Link or Mario or sometimes Luigi. Now, Nintendo does a good job of not enforcing hyper-masculinity for their characters (Link is downright pretty, and Mario, uh, collects rainbow-coloured stars and uses flower power to fight enemies) which makes a less off-putting environment for women, but other franchises suffer from the same guy-centrism without the balancing female-acceptance.

Unfortunately, I don’t play first-person shooters (originally because I found the violence boring and pointless, but nowadays it’s because my hands are too small to use an Xbox controller. No, really.) so I can’t comment first-hand on gender issues in non-Nintendo games. But I’ve never seen my brothers play as a girl. Ever.

Until Mass Effect! Because, you see, there is a solution: let the players create their own characters. The story of Mass Effect looked interesting to me, so I settled myself in as guide-person to direct them to the coolest side-quests and watch it like I would a movie. We created a female character with some badass scars, named her Ripley, and had an awesome time with the game.

Allowing character customization also solves the problem of underrepresentation of people of colour, which I can’t speak to personally but which is a serious issue. It’s the perfect way to be inclusive without the risk of tokenism, since, by definition, the character can’t be relegated to the sidelines as eye-candy (or whatever). Boring white guys can still play as boring white guys and won’t have to be “threatened” by anything different, but everyone else will have the unusual opportunity to put themselves into the game world, and isn’t that the point of video games?

It wouldn’t work right away with some franchises– I’m really amused at the idea of a customizable Mario– but aren’t we getting a little sick of seeing the same characters brought back from the dead again and again? It could breathe new life into some old franchises, to allow people to use their Miis as the main characters, for example. And it would force them to be a little more clever with their writing, coming up with a plot that works just as well for either gender.

A lot of original-storyline games are already doing this– of the ones I own, Oblivion, Rock Band, and Mass Effect all had great character-building options– but a lot inexplicably aren’t, like Assassin’s Creed and Halo. Character customization doesn’t guarantee a perfect game– cough, cough, FABLE, which forgot to allow you to be female– but it gets us a lot closer and so I hope to see a lot more of it.

I’ve been losing at Smash Bros. ever since the N64, when my brothers first discovered that they could team up on me, beat me to a pulp, and not get in trouble with mom as long as they didn’t gloat too loudly.

I started doing better when I decided that Kirby “counted” as female, for the purposes of the girls-only-get-to-play-as-girls rule (when I was perhaps 14 years old). I’ve even beaten my brothers a few times now that I’ve abandoned that rule (now that I am 19). But there’s still a part of me that looks at the Brawl character lineup, and gives a big, sad sigh, wishing that it wasn’t so hard for a girl to play a girl.

Here’s the full line-up for Brawl:

Bowser – male

Captain Falcon – male

Diddy Kong – male

Donkey Kong – male

Falco – male

Fox – male

Canondorf – male

Ice Climbers – half male, half female (though only the male is playable; the female just follows)

Ike – male

Jigglypuff – ???

King Dedede – male

Kirby – ???

Link – male

Lucario – ???

Lucas – male

Luigi – male

Mario – male

Marth – male

Meta Knight – male

Mr. Game & Watch – male

Ness – male

Olimar – male

Peach – female

Pikachu – ???

Pit – male

Pokemon Trainer – male

R.O.B. – ???

Samus – female

Snake – male

Sonic – male

Toon Link – male

Wario – male

Wolf – male

Yoshi – ???

Zelda – female

So. Of the thirty-five playable characters, we have…three females, twenty-six males, and six “???.” The majority, as surely was expected, is male. But also: there are twice as many gender-neutral characters as there are female characters! That just feels…wrong.

But let’s take a look at the “???” characters– there are three categories: pokemon (which can be either sex), robots (which have no sex), and Kirby. But even though we can’t tell the sex of the characters, they give us some clues.

Jigglypuff – It’s a cute little pink blob that sings lullabies with a distinctly feminine voice. Even though Jigglypuffs come in both sexes, I have little doubt that people will assume it’s female.

Kirby – It’s a cute little pink blob that…swallows people to make them into hats? It doesn’t have the feminine face, “hair,” or voice of Jigglypuff, and the wikipedia page uses male pronouns, so the rest of the world assumes male, but I’m going to table this one for now and stick with “???”

Lucario – Lucario is one of those newfangled pokemon that wasn’t around when I was growing up (kids these days!) so I had to look it up:

It has a somewhat feminine figure...

...but somehow it still reads as male to me.

This is a little arbitrary, since the websites I’ve checked have mostly been using gender-neutral pronouns, but given the conversations I’ve had with people while playing, Lucario tends to get read as male.

Pikachu -Pikachus can come in any gender, but the Pikachu that starred in all those pokemon shows, games, books, and movies was male and I have yet to meet anyone who didn’t assume that this Pikachu is the same as Ash’s. So, this one’s male.

R.O.B. – It’s a robot, which means it’s the definition of “it.” But it’s name is Rob, and everyone uses male pronouns for it, so this one’s male as well.

Yoshi – Yoshis can come in either gender, and this one lays eggs, which is a pretty darn female thing to do, and yet in other games it’s paired with Birdo (a hot pink monstrosity) the way Mario and Peach and Luigi and Daisy are paired, implying that Yoshi is, in fact, male. The internet backs me up on this one as well, so male it is.

Which brings us now to the same thirty-five characters, of which thirty are male, four are female, and one is Kirby.

Those four female characters simply cannot compete with the range and variety offered by the thirty males (since you play as the male ice climbers). Zelda, Peach, Samus, and Jigglypuff. These are my options. When I started on the N64 it was just Samus and Jigglypuff. And I’m not very good– I need an awesome character to stay afloat. So is it any surprise that I want to claim Kirby as well?

Oberlin College, it seems, at one point offered a course called Super Smash Brothers Melee Theory and Practice. Here the course description:

This course will teach students the basic, intermediate and advanced combat techniques in the video game Super Smash Brothers Melee for the Nintendo Gamecube. This course will also provide in depth lectures and discussions involving many controversial issues concerning video games in our society today such as censorship, stereotyped characters, addiction, and gaming as an evolving art form. Gamecubes, televisions and controllers will be provided by the instructors. Gamers and non-gamers are welcome and encouraged to take this course. Classes will meet for two and a half hours each week-one and a half hours during regularly scheduled discussion and class time, and one hour outside regular class time as a practicum to practice and refine skills.

Oberlin College, located in Oberlin, Ohio, offers the course as a part of its student-run Experimental College program, whose goal, according to its charter is ” to provide members of the Oberlin community with the opportunity to share in educational alternatives not available in the area.” In order words, ExCo, as it’s called, gives students the chance to teach courses that are are a bit too unconventional (or, say, absurd) for the traditional teaching curriculum.

It’s easy to scoff at the silliness of it all, but there is certainly some merit to the experimental teaching approach, especially when it gives students themselves the ability to teach something they are comfortable with. Teaching any skill, even something as seemingly-wasteful as video games is as much of a learning process as taking any kind of class.

Other notable past offerings include (but are surely not limited to) “The Simpsons: A Cultural and Philosophical Perspective, Calvin and Hobbes ExCo, and Love is Understanding: The Truth About the Monkees.”

A listing of the ExCo’s offerings up to Fall of 2007 can be found here.
