Good evening!

Just want to get a few of my thoughts out there as another Monday draws to a close. It was a pretty decent weekend for yours truly starting with the University of Winchester’s Christmas Ball this past Friday night. The tickets cost a pretty hefty £20 which I was pretty bitter about shelling out prior to this event but it turned out to be quite a decent night. The main event of the evening was an appearance by Mr. Hudson. He was on stage for around 25-30 minutes and performed about 4 or 5 songs, most notably “Forever Young” from Jay-Z’s “The Blueprint 3″ album and his most well known song “Supernova”. Both songs were really well received and the performance as a whole was pretty good. All in all it was a really good night spent with some great people so that was a good start to the weekend.

A big part of our weekend’s since we arrived at University (and by we, I mean myself and my beautiful girlfriend Claire) has been the X Factor and this week was the semi final week ahead of next week’s final showdown. The results show  tonight saw Danyl Johnson get voted off the show which was a shame for me as he and Olly were both my joint favourites to win but it should still be quite a good watch next weekend.

Also, it wouldn’t be one of my blog posts without there being some football talk and that’s exactly what I’m going to do here. Super Sunday this week was my own Everton playing host to Tottenham and what a game it was. Mark my words that has turned our Season around, regardless of what we leave Stamford Bridge with this coming Saturday. And Seamus Coleman, what a performance.

That’s pretty much it for the minute folks, there’ll be more from me to come in the coming days.

It’s that time of the year when the years two best teams face head to head at Stamford Bridge,home of Chelsea FC to prove that only one of them is “THE” BEST. I would be tricky for Man Utd considering the fact that they are away from home and Chelsea are on a roll. Stamford Bridge is no walk in the park for Man Utd since they haven’t won a game there for atleat 10 years staight. But everyone could be in for a surprise today. Anything could happen. Sparks will fly, Words exchanges at the heat of the moment, Flashes of brilliance and that is what will help either team win the match. All we fans hope for is that we get a great game of football that we can relish for the rest of our lives. It should be “The” Best Game.

Rajster’s Prediction:

Hmmn. This is a tough one. Being a Man Utd Fan i hate to see my team lose but at the same time it would be a fierce contest and i go for a 2-2 draw with Rooney & Valencia on the scoresheet for the Red Devils & a brace from Drogba for the Blues.

In the lead up to Chelsea’s first game of the season against the devils from Manchester (this is deliberate if somewhat poor wordplay) I would like to know your level of optimism heading into one of the mostly hotly contested fixtures in our football calendar.

I can say myself that I am always nervous when we play anyone as although i am an optimist as gameday approaches I have always feared the worst, which I blame on a reflex formed during my early years of supporting Chelsea.

I think we have enough to beat a comparitively mediocre Manchester United side lacking the firepower of last season, but I wonder if this is shared by the general public!

As an avid Utd fan I must admit i’m greatly looking forward to this Sundays clash of the Titans (well if Liverpool still qualify for that moniker).

I mean with the season barely a third over we have a perfect opportunity to put a nail in the pool’s title ambitions for another season.  With Rooney, Giggs, Evra, Fletcher and Park all missing the mid-week game there’s not gonna be another opportunity to stuff it to the scouser’s so emphatically.  We could also just force the hand of the fools in charge of Liverpool and cause them to ditch our favorite Spanish waiter since Manuel was in his prime – (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fawlty_Towers#Manuel   for those of you who never caught Fawlty Towers).

Anyway our usual footy gang have the bi-annual Utd vs. Pool supporters game a couple of hours before the match (this one being a forgone conclusion) followed by a trip to the pub and few well deserved beers to help things along heres to hoping it’ll be the Liverpool fans crying into their beers come Sunday night.

Only thing niggling at the back of my mind was last seasons 2-1 defeat in the game at Anfield -  Liverpool minus Gerard and Torres in the starting lineup…..hears hoping theres no such thing as déjà vu.

I mean, you can get a whole night worth and just hit play.

A friend of mine sent me this.  I think someone should take this video and project it into a dark room full of people, all over the walls, ceiling and floors.  The only light in this room should be from this video.  People would be shitting themselves in the fetal position while other people are dazed and dancing in their shit puddles.

I went to Super Sunday yesterday on Bayou St. John with some friends and had a most awesome experience from watching and listening to the Indians chant beneath the oaks to second lining with Rebirth Brass Band all the way down Orleans Avenue. Yeah, I hung! I took some amazing photos and a little video that can be found on my Super Sunday 2009 Flickr set.
Here I’m posting some of the photo’s I took of the kids that costumed and paraded so beautifully, continuing a long cultural tradition in their families.

Vi no RioShow e não poderia deixar de jogar pra cá.

Today was Super Sunday–the day when all the Mardi Gras Indian tribes parade together–rescheduled after last weekend’s rainout.  The weather was perfect today–sunny and warm, with occasional clouds to cool us off.  I rode my bike toward Taylor Park and just followed the crowds.  And man, there were a lot of people.  I wandered around for a bit and then texted with S. and met up with her to follow the parade.  We walked our bikes through the crowds, stopping to  watch.  The tribes were dressed beautifully and the music was wonderful and I just loved the feel of summer.  We ended up back at the park and I got in some dancing as a band played some old favorites.  Everybody was dancing–young and old, men and women, everybody.  People were dressed to see and be seen.  There were puppies, strollers, bikes, crawfish, barbeque, and, of course, beer.  I was reminded of last summer.  Oh, summer in New Orleans.  So many festivals, so much music, so much dancing outside.  My very favorite things.  If today is any sign, we’re off to a good start.  I decided to go with this photograph rather than one of the gorgeous outfitted Indians, because I love the crowds.  And that’s the part that feels like community–all of us dancing, together.  And getting there was much, much easier by bike than by car, because the streets were ridiculously crowded.  This summer will definitely be better by bike.

At this crazy collision of our Irish, Italian and African roots on the streets of this Franco-Hispanic city, our individual identities melding into something greater than it parts, we must remember: All we have is ourselves, and redemption songs.

*This is a repost and I’ve taken Sinn Fein out of the title as it causes so much damned confusion. My use of it follows Ashley Morris’ adoption of the phrase and it’s translation–Ourselves Alone–to the situation of New Orleans, and not an endorsement of any political movement outside of this country. I feel the same way about the struggle for Irish independence after the turn of the last century as Lord Byron felt about the Greeks, and if you catch me humming Jonsey’s Motor Car this is why. There was nothing romantic about The Troubles in the North, and its disconcerting to think how easily America might have gone down that path if President Rockefeller had sent Federal troops to support the segregationists at the bridge at Selma.

The party will be held at The House of Dance and Feathers Museum, a museum that celebrates the history of the neighborhood and the tradition of the Mardi Gras Indians.

After you’ve learned all about the Mardi Gras Indians, you will be fully equipped to enjoy The New Orleans Mardi Gras Indian Council Super Sunday at 11 a.m. This is is a festival at Taylor Park. 1 p.m. is the start of the parade that will start at Washington Ave and end at Taylor Park.
