The video game racer is a genre that has always left me a little cold.

A worrying statement you may think from someone about to embark on the writing of a review for newly released 2-wheeled throttle buster, SBK Generations.

But fear not dear reader, as although it’s true that I’ve never truly felt the surge of excitement that I’m sure so many others enjoy as they drool over hi-octane videos of the latest Forza game I do still have a particular love for something equally important. Good video games.

Irrelevant of my preferences I’m always partial to a good video game and so with that in mind I plunged myself deep into the innards of this years only bike racing title to seek out the goodness within.

Immediately it became apparent that developers, Milestone, had put some serious heart and soul into their new baby. They’ve attempted to deliver a seriously substantial package and one that on first glance seems like a Superbike fans wet dream.

SBK Generations is packed with choice. Over 200 riders adorn a roster ranging from the current crop of speed demons back to 2009’s vintage. There are a multitude of machines available with which to tear up the tarmac, a nice variety of game modes, including the all-important online play, are present and correct and the entire experience is very well presented via neat and easily navigated menu screens.

The light’s green and we’re off to a flying start!

But now comes the acid test. The slice of this pie that will prove decisive in just how much staying power SBK Generations has and whether it’ll even find a home among your gaming collection in the first place. Just how does this beast handle?

Well, the good news is Milestone have produced a very solid racer. The bike’s feel sufficiently ‘bikey’ while racing and provide a real sense that one wrong move or slight over-exuberance on the throttle will see you spill into the dirt before you can say ‘Max Biaggi’s shiny helmet.’ A choice of difficulty levels ease racers into the fray and on the easiest of these you’ll be hitting podiums in no time and wrongly believe you’re Gods gift to motorcycles (I speak from bitter experience), but once cranked up SBK delivers a serious challenge even for hardcore fans and a daunting one for newcomers.

There are one or two annoyances though, other riders bumping you and riding off unscathed while you plummet to the dirt was a little too frequent for my liking and almost threatened to unleash my angry dark side on more than one occasion. Also after a few races our old friend repetition made an unwelcome appearance, this though may be something a more avid racer will avoid.

Time to talk speed. Vitally important in a game of this type is there’s a genuine feeling that when hitting the straights and squeezing every ounce of power from your machine you can almost feel the wind in your hai…erm, helmet, and see the bugs obliterate on your visor. Pleasingly SBK does a fine job in this department, numerous times I found myself actually easing off slightly, in part due to trepidation of my own lack of knowledge of a track and also simply because it felt so damned fast!

Now though we move onto one of this games weaker areas, that of looks.

While it’s true SBK serves up some solid, fully charged racing action it’s also fair to say that Milestone must be pleased they haven’t entered a beauty contest. Graphically the game is below par. Not so far below that it hugely detracts from the racing but by today’s highly polished standards this racer falls short. The bikes look good enough and the riders look okay but the backgrounds and track scenery look decidedly old hat and one dimensional. Having said that, the game doesalmost redeem itself via the superbly realised weather effects, these add wonderful depth to races and look incredibly realistic, after a particularly rain swept few laps I almost asked for a towel. Or perhaps it’s just that when it’s raining the poorly detailed backdrops aren’t as easy to see, either way it’s a blessing.

The sounds seem to be pretty much spot on and true to life, including my own cries of anguish as I once again slid off the track and lost roughly 200 places, well that’s how it felt. All the bikes whine and growl like a Superbike should and the menu music is delicate and unintrusive.

Mode-wise Milestone have given us the traditional career, create a rider, choose a team and live the dream of fighting your way to the top of the Superbike tree. Each race on your journey offers a couple of chances to run practice sessions to acclimatise yourself with the track before hitting the qualifying and finally the race itself. The bike can be fine tuned by hand with numerous tweaks and variations available or for the less mechanically minded, ie: me, it can be left to your pit genius. The career mode is a full package in it’s own right and should last many happy hours.

Online mode is basically exactly what you’d expect, at the time of writing I’ve only managed a handful of races but each was a very fluid, lag free and enjoyable affair and something I hope to return to and really savour over the next few weeks. Upto 16 players can rev it out in quick races or over full championships. Very nice work indeed.

SBK Experience is a new mode that offers racers the chance to take on challenges relating different years from the Superbike calendar. The challenges come in a number of varieties and flavours from using minimal braking on laps to doing wheelies for a specified amount of time during a race. Completing a challenge unlocks a couple more and also opens up new riders and bikes. The mode is a nice distraction from the more standard racing fare and packs a tough test that requires skill and patience.

Finally there’s Free-Play mode in which you can basically do your own thing from creating championships to racing quick laps or taking on time challenges.

Online leaderboards keep a track of your progress and offer the chance to see how your riding compares to other players around the world which is always a welcome addition.

So where are we?

Well, SBK Generations hasn’t turned me into a disciple of the racing genre but it has entertained me and surely that’s all we should really be asking of our games. The racing is fun and seems pleasantly realistic but does, for a part-time racer like myself, become repetitive after a while. The presentation is great, the menu’s are simple yet quirky and look all the better for it, the depth that Milestone have aimed for is apparent and with a number of modes and online options the game should hold plenty of longevity for fans of the genre or the Superbike circuit itself.

If you fall into the category of Superbike or video game racing fan then you will find much to get excited about here and this game could last you a long, long time with it’s generous options, for the less enthusiastic, SBK Generations will likely still entertain for a while but will eventually begin to feel stale before taking up residence on the shelf next to the other racers in your collection.

We have been coming here to Miller Motorsports Park for four years now and each trip is different. There are different race events, different racers, different vendors and entertainment. Last year they changed the schedule to hold the Superbike races on Monday, Memorial Day instead of the usual Sunday. It seems to work well for everyone. However, there is one thing that changes like crazy and it makes me nuts, you guessed it, the weather.

When we come to Miller we camp out at the park right next door. It’s a very nice place and you get to meet a lot of interesting travelers coming to the races. The first year we got here so late the first night we had to sleep in the back of the truck in freezing wind. The rest of the weekend was great. Year two was windy but warm. Our third year was dominated by rain, wind, snow, and more rain. It rained so much the second night we had a river running through our tent. Fortunately, we had big air mattress to keep our jammies dry. That same night the snow level was about five hundred feet above track level.

Here we are at year four, we’re pros now; nothing will surprise us. We check weather.com before we get on the road. Slight chance of showers on Friday and Saturday, clearing Sunday and a beautiful sunny day on Monday, race day. The wind, which is almost as normal here as it is at Willow Springs, was only supposed to be 18-20 mph with gusts to 25 on Saturday. That last sentence is why the pretty lady on TV is not to be trusted.

After a nice solid drenching rain Saturday morning which made for some pretty exciting practice sessions, the wind picked up, and picked up, to the point of riders getting blown all over the track and on top of that it was cold. The pretty lady on the weather channel said it would be in the mid 60’s…she lied. Here is where the story gets fun.
We stayed here at the track editing photos and writing stories until about 7pm. Then it was into town to pick up supplies…refreshing adult beverage makin’s. Camping at the races requires a nice cold Martini at the end of a long day. This is Utah, the state runs all the liquor stores, and they only sell them during certain times and certain days. When we arrive at the State store, we find out we are twenty minutes too late – what is a poor thirsty moto-journalist to do? We’ll just go to the market and get a bottle wine. Guess what? You can only buy wine at the State store too. Back to the market for beer. A box of local beer will have to do.

The wind is still blowing pretty strong but nowhere near the velocity of the afternoon. As we pull up to our camp spot I see our nice blue ground cloth with nothing sitting on top of it. “Heather, our tent is gone!” “Shut up, it is not?…where did it go?” I couldn’t help but laugh at the look of utter disbelief on her face…first no martini’s and now no place to enjoy them. Things are from bad to worse and the adventure begins.

Where is our tent? One of our fellow campers tells us that some other camper saw a maintenance guy take it and put it away in a service building. Off to find the gal at the gate; she’s on a break; try to find someone else; no luck; finally find the gate lady; she calls somebody else; then we actually find our tent behind the service building not in it which is a good thing because the man that has the key isn’t there.

We spend the next hour or more finding a better protected spot and repairing all the holes and tears that our poor little portable hotel suffered while getting blown around. By that time we decide against cooking dinner and head for town. But that, friends, is another story.
Finally around 11pm we crawl into our bed only to be blown awake by Hurricane Zelda blowing through a couple of hours later. It was blowing so hard that I truly believed that when I opened the door in the morning, I could look at Heather and say “Toto, I don’t think we’re in Kansas anymore.”
It was quite the adventure yesterday, but every trip here is.

To start with the Isle of Man TT is, at last, properly underway! I haven’t made it a secret that over the past 12 months the Isle of Man TT has become my motorsport highlight of the year. The speed, the brick walls, the mountain, the guts required to race in it – it is the ultimate motorsport event.

I’m not cheapening any other series, and of course all motorsport is dangerous, but the TT is something else. 9 time Motorcycling World Champion Valentino Rossi has even said before that he admires the riders at the TT, and that you’d never get him going around the Mountain Course flat out.

One man who will, however, is John McGuinness. The King of the Mountain. As I type this he has 18 TT wins to his name after winning the Superbike race on Saturday, a feat only beaten by the legend that is Joey Dunlop. Can McGuinness beat Joey’s record of 26? I think he probably could, but time may not be on his side. He has the talent on the big bikes, but Supersport and Superstock speeds may well be the reason he just falls short in the end…

In contrast, a man who’s still searching for his first TT win, Guy Martin. Guy is the people’s favourite. Anyone who watches the TT knows who Guy is, even many who don’t will know him from his film and TV appearances, and anyone who knows who he is, likes who he is. I’ve not yet met anyone who has said they don’t find Guy Martin entertaining – because that’s exactly what it is.

While he’s full of entertainment, he severely lacks luck. Guy has the talent and the speed to win a TT, he’s won pretty much everywhere else, but the Isle of Man just never seems to be kind to the mad Lincolnshire-man. But from a fan’s point of view, this may be a good thing.

On Sunday’s TT Show on ITV4, Guy told viewers that after he wins at the TT, he’ll probably give up racing, citing it as another “tick in the box”. From a selfish point of view, I hope he never wins a TT race, just so we can get more and more Guy Martin interviews.

While on the subject of the Isle of Man, a quick note must be said about the return of Dave Molyneux. I’ll admit sidecars don’t particularly interest me, but when someone of Molyneux’s stature (a 15-time winner and 3rd most successful at the TT ever behind McGuinness and Dunlop) is racing, it’s worth a watch. He never looked like losing, and I’m expecting a similar display in the second race later in the week…

Moving to MotoGP now, which I’m actually currently watching on iPlayer due to a busy Jubilee weekend… As I glance back to the screen there are 5 laps to go with Cal Crutchlow scrapping with the retiring Casey Stoner for fourth place. Another great race for Cal (so far) but teammate Andrea Dovizioso (currently 3rd) has been equally as impressive during this race, which may well be a very important battle later in the season..

Ben Spies once again fell short of Yamaha’s expectations (quite literally this week) while battling for the lead early in the race, and it just seems academic that he won’t be on the works bike next season, leaving the door open for one of the Tech 3 riders. Personally I’d sign Cal, but that’s just me being typically patriotic, especially on this Diamond Jubilee weekend..

Some 300 superbikers staged a demonstration in front of Media Prima Bhd (MPB) headquarters in Petaling Jaya today in protest against a television programme which branded them as “pests”.

The bikers claim that TV3′s Majalah 3 programme aired an item which unfairly placed the label on them and demanded that the presenter issue an open apology.

According to the group’s spokesperson Mohd Shahid Tasiran, the presenter had branded them as ‘pelesit jalanan’ (street locusts), which he said was akin to claiming that the bikers were Satanists.

“The term used (by the presenter) is ‘pelesit jalanan’. Locusts cooperate with Satan, the Devil. We feel that they are calling us the Devil and ‘Road Satanists’. We want them to retract it,” said Mohd Shahid.

The programme had included a staged arrest of bikers speeding and performing wheelies on the highway.

A camera crew recorded the event while the presenter lauded the Automated Enforcement System (AES) and uttered the term which the bikers found offensive.

The following week, TV3 apologised for not clearly stating that the arrest of was staged. However, bikers have expressed outrage online over the presenter’s refusal to apologise

150 Mat Rempit nabbed and made to push their motorbikes

GEORGE TOWN: The merriment of more than 150 Mat Rempit and about 100 of their pillion riders was cut short when they were rounded up by the police in Jalan Bukit Gambier here.

The road hooligans were made to push their machines for at least 5km to the northern region marine police base in Batu Uban during the six-hour operation codenamed Ops Samseng Jalanan.

However, none of them seemed to be sorry as they could be seen joking among themselves while pushing their machines to the marine base which was about two hours away.

Earlier, they were spotted racing and doing dangerous stunts while being cheered on by onlookers and their friends.

KDN ropes in ‘Mat Rempit’ in United Against Crime drive

PUTRAJAYA: The Home Affairs Ministry (KDN) will again engage ‘Mat Rempit’ in tackling crime under the United Against Crime initiative.

Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein said it would be meeting the group and relevant non-governmental organisations (NGOs) soon.

“We are thinking outside the box. Just Because Mat Rempits have negative connotation doesn’t mean that we have to neglect them.

“They will face challenges, criticisms and cynicism but if they stay true to their belief and we guide them the right way, what is impossible can become reality,” he told reporters after launching ‘Konvoi Jalur Gemilang Ikatan
Rela/KDN’ programme here yesterday.

The effort is continuation of KDN efforts involving stakeholders and authorities in fighting crime, including shopping mall owners and NGOs.

Traffic cop succumbs to head injuries, five policemen detained

Selangor police chief DCP Datuk Tun Hisan Tun Hamzah confirmed the death of the 48-year-old policeman at 11.50am on Friday.

He also said five policemen, aged between 45 and 51, have been detained in connection with the case.

“Police investigations revealed that Kons Mustaghni was not hit on the head with a helmet. Instead an object was thrown at him.

“It is believed that one of the policemen arrested had thrown the object at the victim,” DCP Tun Hisan told a news conference here.

The policemen were arrested Friday morning at the South Klang police district.

It was earlier reported that Mustaghni was severely injured in the head after a motorcycle carrying two illegal racers (Mat Rempit) crashed into him and the pillion rider hit him on the back of the head with a helmet, during the police operation in Jalan Bunga Raya, Taman Gembira, here, Sunday.

When we arrive at the State store, we find out we are twenty minutes too late – what is a poor thirsty moto-journalist to do? We’ll just go to the market and get a bottle wine. Guess what? You can only buy wine at the State store too. Back to the market for beer. A box of local beer will have to do.

The wind is still blowing pretty strong but nowhere near the velocity of the afternoon. As we pull up to our camp spot I see our nice blue ground cloth with nothing sitting on top of it. “Heather, our tent is gone!” “Shut up, it is not?…where did it go?” I couldn’t help but laugh at the look of utter disbelief on her face…first no martini’s and now no place to enjoy them. Things are from bad to worse and the adventure begins.

Where is our tent? One of our fellow campers tells us that some other camper saw a maintenance guy take it and put it away in a service building. Off to find the gal at the gate; she’s on a break; try to find someone else; no luck; finally find the gate lady; she calls somebody else; then we actually find our tent behind the service building not in it which is a good thing because the man that has the key isn’t there.

We spend the next hour or more finding a better protected spot and repairing all the holes and tears that our poor little portable hotel suffered while getting blown around. By that time we decide against cooking dinner and head for town. But that, friends, is another story.
Finally around 11pm we crawl into our bed only to be blown awake by Hurricane Zelda blowing through a couple of hours later. It was blowing so hard that I truly believed that when I opened the door in the morning, I could look at Heather and say “Toto, I don’t think we’re in Kansas anymore.”

Teams were headed by WSBK Champion Carlos Checa, Max Biaggi, Ben Bostrom, Leon Haslam, Tom Sykes, Danny Eslick, AMA Superbike champion Josh Hayes and Former World Champion ‘Mr. Daytona Scott Russell. At the end, they added up the times and the fastest team won. The winning team was headed up by eighteen year old AMA Supersport rider Elena Myers.
It was great to see all the racers just enjoying the time with friends and fans and under no pressure. It was good to see Carlos Checa spend time talking to a few of the military personnel there. All in all a fine afternoon with lots of fun racing, good conversations among friends and much laughter. A fan could meet a racer, get a picture and have a great time too. Category 1 clearly is for the adrenaline junkie who craves the rush. Speed is what drives this animals… Most often the kind of bikes you see people in this category riding through crowded & open streets are the Kawasaki Ninjas, Repsol Honda’s, KTM Duke, Aprilla, etc. These bikes more often than not, are in the over 300, 500 and above cc category & are clearly marketed with a “need for speed” message considering you will see them in Moto Gp’s, Super bike categories etc

The Cruiser

Laid back, enjoying life, chilling with friends, not really a thrill seeker but more of the kind who appreciates the sweetness of doing nothing is the defination for the community which falls into category 2. Harley Davidson, some versions of BMW, Triumph, Bajaj Avenger, etc. are bikes which appeal to psyche of these people. Clearly the agenda for these riders is to go on long rides alone or with friends, have comfortable machines, take things slow and steady which is also defined by their ride.

The Dirt Bike

Living life on the edge, the thrill of speed and the adreniline rush of living life by the second is what drives people who own Scramblers. These guys will be seen navigating through congested traffic at high speeds, doing wheelies, etc. across open roads, trying to pickup their bikes on full throttle as soon as the signal lights turn green. Yamaha, Kawasaki, Suzuki, etc. are companies producing these bikes

The Custom Bike

Clearly a combination of all of the above and add to that the need to personalize, style and stand out amongst the crowd is what gets people to opt for these bikes. You know the guys wants people to  believe that the bike is an extention of his / her personallity… an ordinary bike has a custom, paint job, multiple accesories, tweaks, etc. Chop Shops & Bike Builders across the world build these customs, some popular ones being Orange County, Jesse James, Choppers Inc, Paul Junior Design, Rajputhana Customs to name a few.

The Spring Motorcycle Show is in the past now and was not a good gig for us. Poorly placed facing a back wall of a clothing stand and a closed off wall of boxes from that same stand denying frontal exposure from the overflow of people trying on their Duel Sport equipment.

Sight line from the adjacent aisles was none existent with that wall and our neighbour’s full size banner completely shutting any side view to us.

We will definitely have to weigh the facts for next year and at this moment can only see us doing a dedicated show like Hall #4 at the Supershow.

We had some new subscribers sign up electronically and we had a draw for the Toronto Football Club tickets which was won by Clare in Courtice, Ontario. Congratulations to her. She gave the tickets to a family in need who could not afford to see any professional sport who enjoyed the game immensely!

So far for 2012 racing this has taking on a new style and that is FAST!  I mean all types of motor sports are breaking new records and the filming and sound is just phenomenal,  got to love HD.  So let’s go out to the tracks of Superbikes and see who is smoking who.  First a little clip from GoPro with Shelina Moreda, who test rides her new race motorcycle at Infineon Raceway for the 2012 AMA Pro Motorcycle SuperSport Series.

AMA Pro Road

The AMA Superbike is the premier Superbike racing series in the United States. It is part of the AMA Pro Racing series, and was managed by the AMA until 2009 when the AMA sold the series to the Daytona MotorSports Group.  Originally launched in 1976, it is now the longest running Superbike championship. The series allows more engine modifications than most Superbike championships.

SBK  Australia

Superbike World Championship (also known as SBK) is the premier international superbike Championship. The championship was founded in 1988.  It is regulated by the FIM and managed and promoted by FGSport.

Once regarded as the poor cousin to the more glamorous MotoGP championship, the Superbike World Championship has grown into a world-class professional racing series. Many of the riders that competed in SBK over the years are household names among motorcycle racing fans.
